-B-U-R-N-O-U-T----B-U-R-N-O-U-T----B-U-R-N-O-U-T- BURNOUT for Nintendo Gamecube Criterion Games -B-U-R-N-O-U-T----B-U-R-N-O-U-T----B-U-R-N-O-U-T- CONTENTS 1 : Welcome to the Fast Lane 1.1 Introduction from Me 1.2 Welcome to Burnout 2 : The Way of Speed 2.1 The Championships 2.2 The Courses 2.3 Face / Offs 2.4 The 'Other' Modes 3 : Choose Your Racer!! 3.1 Speed = Cars 3.2 Beat Me!!! 3.3 Tips for the Road 4 : The Home Stretch 4.1 Secrets 4.2 The Finishing Line -B-U-R-N-O-U-T- 1 : Welcome to the Fast Lane 1.1 Welcome to my latest walkthrough, for Burnout, the fast paced and exhilarating racing game from Criterion, on GC, PS2 and Xbox (though this walkthrough is for GC version). Hope you find it useful in some way! 1.2 Burnout is the latest and possible greatest real racer on Gamecube. With 9/10 in Official Nintendo Magazine, they do really rate it highly, and if you've got it, enjoy it - it's as fast as they come, and you have to watch the road like a hawk. Check your score, position or the opponent and 'WHAM!' it's all over, just like that. Good luck! -B-U-R-N-O-U-T- 2 : The Way of Speed 2.1 Burnout has 6 fast paced championships, varying from the horribly easy to the damned near impossible. All consist of 3 races, each being qualified to by getting a certain postion in the previous race. And you get 3 chances to get that qualifying position. Now, the championships, listed like so : <name of championship> : <difficulty> <race 1> : <difficulty> : <qualifying position> : <notes> <race 2> : <difficulty> : <qualifying position> : <notes> <race 3> : <difficulty> : <qualifying position> : <notes> - Journeyman Grand Prix : Easy Interstate : Easy : 3rd : There are quite a few tricky right angled corners, so drifting is the order of the day. Harbour Town : Easy : 3rd : In this level, the curves on the way down can prove to be key crashing points. Try and get a boost by driving on the wrong side of road (fairly easy to do on bridge) River City : Easy / Medium: 2nd : In the River City, you'll find yourself trying to avoid the traffic moreso, so try and drive on the right side of the road, as if you don't you may striggle for second - Big Run Grand Prix : Easy / Medium Hillside Pass : Easy / Medium : 3rd : In this particular course, you may find yourself finding it tough to not hit cars on the hills corners. Try and go slow, yet drift, to make it round. Twilight Harbour : Easy / Medium : 2nd : As the name suggests, it evening, making the ride all the more pleasant. The usual difficultys here, but the bridge to road drift may prove tough. Drive on wrong side of road for added boost and to get round it easier. Gridlock USA : Medium : 2nd :This course is slightly harder, as a lot of the course involves driving opposing traffic and fitting through small lanes. Advice is to drive on the lines, not the edge. - Euro Marathon : Medium : 1st : This course is so very, very long, as the name suggests, and go's through every European course. Good fun indeed, but tiring. Just apply the rules you would for each individual Euro course here. Watch the seamless transition between courses, very clever. - Savage Streets Grand Prix : Medium / Hard Night Shift : Medium : 2nd : This course is hard for various reasons, mainly though because of the tough qualifying position, and also because of the course. A nightime course, with traffic in tight lanes. It's fairly easy to build up boost on the wrong side of road though... Cliffhanger : Medium : 2nd : Another course based on the hilly curvy regions. And if you crash, you can plunder over safety fences. And things. The fun...still, use drift and slow speed to go beyond the hills. Midnight Run : Medium / Hard : 1st : The hardest qualifying level, but not so hard a course. Yet another nighttime course, cars will be fast coming towards you, so try and drive on the white lines. - Twilight Grand Prix : Hard Rush Hour : Medium / Hard : 1st : This is automatically difficult because of the qualifying level, and the course is hard to, as the name gives away. With it being rush hour, the cars are fast and many. Drive on the right side of the road, it's safer, and boosts are completely useless. Country Chaos : Hard : 1st : The qualication is tough, the course just evil. Try and wind the countryside by taking the mud routes whilst using a boost BUT NOT AT ANY POINT drifting. Never. Sunset River : Hard : 1st : The final course in this championship, and getting here and winning this is hard. The Sunset River has so much traffic you'll find yourself crashing, often (unavoidable) crashing that is. Just hope, thats what you need! - USA Marathon : Hard : 1st : The longest track in the game, the hardest championship too. Takes you through every single USA level, and in different parts of each, seamlessly integrated. You may lose control on the upward blind hills, but don't worry, what goes up, must go down.... 2.2 The courses in Burnout are mostly locked at the start, but you can slowly unlock them, through succesfully completing and unlocking championships. Advice on the courses is above, but below are all the courses : Interstate Harbour Town River City Hillside Pass Twilight Harbour Gridlock USA Euro Marathon Rush Hour Euro Marathon EX (unlocked after completing Euro Marathon course) Cliffhanger Midnight Run Night Shift Country Chaos Sunset River USA Marathon USA Marathon EX (unlocked after completing USA Marathon course) 2.3 In the game, by progressing through the various championships, you slowly unlock the 4 Face / Offs, each, once completed, offer you a new vehicle. They are 3 lap 1 on 1 races, they are : Face / Off 1 : Roadster Face / Off 2 : Tow Truck (Special) Face / Off 3 : Saloon GT Face / Off 4 : Bus (Special) The 2 'Special' vehicles ae special in the sense of 'completely useless but still cool' special. Not really worth it, but still good fun to drive in multiplayer. 2.4 There are also various other modes in Burnout I've yet to mention. Here's a runthrough of every one : Head 2 Head : Multiplayer fun where 2 people can play versus each other on any couse in any vehicle (try the bus or tow truck) in a battle for supremacy. Shame theres no 4 player though. Time Attack : Try and beat your own and the already put scores, times, and more, in a desperate attempt to avoid traffic and master the skill of 'Boost'ing Special : Contains various options. You can view saved 'Crash Replays' (15 blocks each), you can listen to the funky music of the game, such as the techno 'Eurorush', watch the credits (also shown after completeing all championships), play the Face / Off's, attempt the 'Survival' mode, in which you cannot crash once or it's all over, harder that it sounds, and another 2 options when you complete all championships.. (see Secrets) Options : As it sounds, modify audio settings, controller configuration, and more. High Scores : Pretty obvious. Do well, fast, or terribly, to get in here. -B-U-R-N-O-U-T- 3 : Choose Your Racer!! 3.1 There are 9 vehicles, some must be unlocked, some harder to control, in Burnout. They come in various colours, and various eases of use, and they are listed as follows : <name of vehicle> : <ease of use> : <top speed rating > : <1 word desc.> < c o l o u r s a v a i l a b l e i n > Supermini : Easy ease of use : Medium top speed : Nippy Blue, Red, White, Silver & Black Sports Coupe : Medium ease of use : Medium/Hi top speed : Stylish Red, Blue, White, Black & Silver Saloon : Medium ease of use : Medium/Hi top speed : Smooth! Black, Silver, Red, Blue & White Roadster : Medium ease of use : Hi top speed : Best!! Silver, Red, Yellow, White & Blue Muscle : Hard to use : Hi top speed : Boost? Blue, White, Red, Black & Silver Pickup : V.Hard to use : Medium/Hi top speed : Why? Red, Blue, Black, White & Yellow Saloon GT : Hard to use : Hi top speed : Speedster White, Red, Blue, Silver & Black Tow Truck :- S P E C I A L -: Slighty random, and a bit useless. Can take down the smaller cars on the road though, plus gives big insurance cash Bus :- S P E C I A L -: The final car you unlock, in the final, rather speedy face off. Quite fast considering, but still a little useless. Also, once again, good for big insurance claims! 3.2 Think you can beat me? Try and target these amounts! For best driver, can you beat : 1 - 431705 2 - 380074 3 - 298225 And for worst driver, try : 1 - $1254902 2 - $1202860 3 - $1046805 And finally, can you get this in insurance for 1 crash? $167702? 3.3 Some tips for the road eh? Well, use your 'Boost' meter only if you feel completely safe on the road you travel on, because crashing on boost is painful, to do and to watch. Then again, your boost is wasted if you crash whilst it's full (its dramatically and slightly unfairly cut in about half) so use it fast when you get it if you can control it. If drifting, try and keep it going as long as possible without skidding off into oblivion. Sounds obvious, but it's npt. Just try it... -B-U-R-N-O-U-T- 4 : The Home Stretch 4.1 There aren't many secrets, but here are the ones I've discovered. Do the cars on the road just get in your way? Are they all always wrong? Worry no more, as when you successfully complete Burnout, you're given 2 modes : Free Run & Free Run Twin Essentially these modes are any normal Burnout course, with the cars all taken out. Oddly enough, for a few laps in this mode, I didn't even notice the absence of cars. It adds less risk to the proceedings, but crashes against barriers are still oh so possible (those irratating $20000 crashes, that waste your time for as good as nothing). Still, it makes the GC's only real driving game even more real. But still with the speed. Plus boost's are much easier to get, as both sides of road have no traffic! 4.2 As usual, I've enjoyed writing this walkthrough, and I hope it's been of a real use to you.
