Karts – Each character has their own kart, but you only get certain ones from the start – Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Toadstool, Bowser, Baby Mario, Yoshi, Kooper and Wario from what I remember. The rest you have to unlock. Mario Kart DD has 8 types of kart, which can all go up to 190mph. All have different stats, out of five, for top speed, acceleration and weight. Speed – well, speed is pretty obvious. How fast the kart can go. 1 would be a brick, 5 is the Roadrunner on acid. Acceleration – how fast the kart can get to full speed. Acceleration is very important, since most attacks will knock you off course and stop your kart, which means you have to try and get back in the race. Weight – how light or heavy the kart is. Weight is important, since it controls your ability to knock the other karts around. If two karts collide and one is heavier than the other, the lighter of the two will be sent flying. If they are equal in terms of weight, they will both be knocked back an equal amount. Weight also determines handling - the heavier karts may be able to knock the other racers around like the local school bully, but turning can be a nightmare for them. Lighter karts can turn very easily, heavier karts need more room. Weight also affects a kart’s ability when it goes off-road (on to the grass etc) Character’s Karts - “Red Fire” Mario’s kart Top Speed - 3 Acceleration - 3 Weight – 3 Like the original Mario Karts, Mario is the generic character (although, in this game, it’s his kart, not actually him) With a good balance of stats (3,3,3) it’s great for new players to help them get to grips with the game. It has no weaknesses, but also no strengths. “Green Fire” Luigi’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 2 Weight - 2 Looks just like Mario’s, only it’s green and has Ls instead of Ms. However, it doesn’t handle like Mario’s kart. It's faster, but the low weight allows it to be knocked around and it also has lower acceleration. “Heart Coach” Princess Toadstool’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight – 3 Well, it certainly is pink. Not the manliest of cars, to say the least. Decent on sharp turns, but the slow top speed will mean you’ll be eating dust on the straight tracks. “Bloom Coach” Daisy’s Kart Top Speed - 3 Acceleration - 3 Weight - 2 Looks like Princess Toadstool’s kart, but handles very differently. Not exactly the best kart in the game, it has moderate speed and acceleration, but is light can be thrown around by the other, heavier karts. Quite good off-road, though, due to the weight. “DK Jumbo” Donkey Kong’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 2 Weight - 4 Heavy, but also fast, the only problem is the slow acceleration. However, unlike lighter karts, it can’t be knocked around so easily when speeding up, which is an advantage. “Barrel Train” Diddy Kong’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 2 Weight – 3 A strange one, this kart. It’s for lightweights, but has slow acceleration and a medium weight. Good for the straight tracks, but avoid it on the circuits which need good handling or where you’re likely to be knocked off course (since it’s acceleration isn’t great) “Goo-Goo Buggy” Baby Mario’s kart Top Speed - 1 Acceleration - 5 Weight – 2 It has the lowest top speed, the best acceleration, and only the Bullet Blaster is lighter. Better on the courses where there’s not much straight track (because everything will just overtake you) Use it on the twisting and turning courses, like DK Mountain. “Rattle Buggy” Baby Luigi’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight – 2 Better than the Goo-Goo Buggy because of the better top speed (it sacrifices acceleration for this, but in the long run, top speed is more important) Can be used on pretty much any course, unlike the Goo-Goo Buggy, and is great for Time Trials. “Toad Racer” Toad’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight - 2 With the same stats as the Rattle Buggy, it’s really a matter of taste whether you go for this or Baby Luigi’s kart. I prefer this, personally, since it looks like a proper go-kart, the kind we’re used to from Mario Kart on the SNES and 64. “Toadette's Kart” Toadette’s kart Top Speed - 1 Acceleration - 5 Weight - 2 Another pink one. Not exactly an original name, either. Same stats as the Goo-Goo Buggy, so again, it’s a matter of preference whether you take this or Baby Mario’s kart. It is pink, though. Remember that. Just checking. “Koopa Dasher” Koopa’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight - 2 Another 2,4,2 kart, but the only one of its kind available from the start. “Para Wing” Paratroopa’s kart Top Speed - 1 Acceleration - 5 Weight - 2 Bad on Mushroom Cup, bad on Flower Cup, okay on Star Cup, great after that. Simple. “Turbo Yoshi” Yoshi’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight - 3 Good recovery (thanks to the acceleration) and the weight means it can’t be pushed around very easily, however it slows off-road, and the top speed isn’t anything amazing. Keep to the road and you’ll be fine. “Turbo Birdo” Birdo’s kart Top Speed - 3 Acceleration - 3 Weight - 4 Quite difficult to master, but a very good kart once you’re used to it. Decent acceleration, decent top speed, it’s just like Mario’s only heavier. Of course, being heavy has advantages (being able to knock people about) and disadvantages (sluggish to control) “Koopa King” King Bowser’s kart Top Speed - 5 Acceleration - 1 Weight - 5 Bowser's the heaviest character in the game, and it shows with this beast. Imagine a breeze block with wheels. Though great for the Mushroom Cup, it's really not too good on the later courses, even Bowser's Castle. Avoid obstacles like your life depended on it, since the slow acceleration is a killer if you get stopped. Other than that, it’s a race winning machine if you’re good enough with it. Great for Battle Mode, since it can push off any other kart (except another Koopa King) “Bullet Blaster” Junior’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 3 Weight - 1 The lightest kart in the game, with a good top speed and average acceleration. Great for novices, it's the total opposite of the kart Junior’s dad drives. You’ll get knocked around like a leaf in a tornado, but the kart has good recovery since the acceleration and top speed are good. “Wario Car” Wario’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 2 Weight - 4 The Wario Car has the same stats as the DK Jumbo, but it’s much wider, meaning it’s harder to avoid obstacles and weave in between the other cars to get ahead. Not too hot in Battle Mode, since it’s a bigger target for the shells. Still, it looks good, and that’s what REALLY counts, isn’t it? “Waluigi Racer” Waluigi’s kart Top Speed - 3 Acceleration - 3 Weight - 3 Walugi’s racer has the same stats as Mario's kart, meaning it’s good for newcomers, although by the time you get it, you’ll be an expert. “Piranha Pipes” Petey Piranha’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 2 Weight - 5 Two warp pipes stuck to each other. Strange. By the time you get this kart, you should be good enough to handle how heavy this beast is. Slightly slower than Bowser’s kart, it does have better acceleration, which means better recovery, and the slightly slower speed means it’s easier to handle. “Boo Pipes” King Boo’s kart Top Speed - 2 Acceleration - 4 Weight - 4 The only heavyweight kart that's good at turning and acceleration but doesn’t have a good top speed. “Gold Kart” Toadsworth’s kart Top Speed - 4 Acceleration - 3 Weight - 4 The Gold kart has no weight preferences. You can have Baby Mario and Toad, or Wario and Bowser. Great for time trials.
