Added Cut: Can be found in the Great Glacier. A single physical attack is performed when the paired Materia is used. Added Effect: Can be found in the Gi Cave in Cosmo Canyon. The status effect of the paired Materia is put onto the weapon or armour. All: Can be found in various places throughout the game, or can be bought from Fort Condor on Disc 3 for 20,000 gil. The paired Materia now affects all opponents, instead of only one. All Magic Materia can be paired with an All, except Comet, Contain, Full Cure, Shield, and Ultima. An All has no effect on Summon or Command Materia. Counter: Can be found in the Northern Crater. The paired Command Materia is used when physically attacked. Nothing will happen if the paired Materia is not a yellow Command Materia. Double Cut, Slash-All, Enemy Skill, and Master Command cannot be used. Elemental: Given to you by the Mayor of Midgar on Floor 62 of the Shinra Building if you guess the password correctly on the first go, it can be found next to the Mako Fountain in Mt. Nibel, and you receive one for playing the World Map tune on Tifa's piano during Disc 2. The element of the paired Materia is put onto the weapon or armour. Final Attack: Given to you if you successfully complete the Special Battle at the Battle Square of the Gold Saucer. You can only enter the special battle when you have got Omnislash and W-Summon. The paired Materia is used if the character is KO'd. HP Absorb: Can be found in the House of Cats in Wutai, but only after you have got your Materia back from Yuffie. Absorbs HP when the paired Materia is used. Magic Counter: Given as a prize for winning a chocobo race at the Gold Saucer. The paired Magic Materia is used when damage is sustained. The most powerful available spell will be cast, e.g. Comet2 will be used, not Comet, but only if you have access to Comet2. Nothing will happen if the paired Materia is not a green Magic Materia, and Master Magic cannot be used. MP Absorb: Can be found in Wutai Item Shop. You will receive the Materia once you persuade Yuffie to give you it all back. Absorbs MP when the paired Materia is used. MP Turbo: Can be found in the Whirlwind Maze. Consume more MP in order to make the paired Magic or Summon much more powerful. Quadra Magic: Can be found in a cave near Mideel. You need a blue chocobo in order to get there. The paired Magic or Summon is cast four times, but the MP cost is quadrupled. Sneak Attack: Given as a prize for winning a chocobo race at the Gold Saucer. The paired Materia is used immediately at the beginning of a battle, even if it is a back attack. If the paired Materia is a Magic then the highest-level magic is used. Steal As Well: Can be found in the Da-Chao Mountains in Wutai. You need the Key Item Leviathan Scales in order to find it. When the paired Materia is used it makes an attempt to steal. This is useful with Comet2 because it hits multiple times, so it attempts to steal multiple times. e) Purple Materia - Independent Chocobo Lure: Can be bought from Chocobo Billy for 2,000 gil, or can be found at the farm on Disc 2. Helps you to encounter chocobos when you are running on the tracks. Counter Attack: Can be found after the battle with the Materia Keeper in Mt. Nibel. Increases the chances of random battles being pre-emptive. Speed Plus: Given as a prize at the Battle Square in the Gold Saucer. Increases Dexterity by 10% to 50%. Underwater: Morph a Ghost Ship in the Underwater Reactor to get a Guide Book. Take this Guide Book to the traveller in Kalm and he will give you the Underwater Materia. It removes the 20 minute time limit you have when fighting the Emerald Weapon. f) Enemy Skills In order to learn an Enemy Skill the character who has the Enemy Skill Materia equipped needs to be hit with it, and the party need to be victorious from that battle. Some enemies need to be manipulated in order to perform the Enemy Skill, and I will indicate when this needs to be done. You can manipulate enemies using the yellow Manipulate Command Materia. The locations mentioned are those where you can first obtain the skill. Frog Song: Learned from Touch Me (Gongada Area) Causes a single target to suffer sleep and frog statuses. L4. Suicide: Learned from Mu (Chocobo Ranch Area) Causes critical damage and inflicts the mini status on all enemies if their levels are a multiple of 4. Magic Hammer: Learned from Razor Weed (Wutai Area) Drains 100 MP from a single target. White Wind: Learned from Zemzelett (Junon Area). You need to manipulate it. Revives, restores up to 7,000 HP and removes all status effects from a single ally. Dragon Force: Learned from Blue Dragon (Inside Gaea's Cliff). You need to manipulate it. Doubles a single target's Defence and Magic Defence. Death Force: Learned from Adamantaimai (Wutai Beach). You need to manipulate it. Makes a single target immune to Sudden Death. Flame Thrower: Learned from Ark Dragon (Mythril Mines) Causes medium Fire damage to a single opponent. Laser: Learned from a Death Claw (Corel Desert Prison) Halves a single target's HP. Matra Magic: Learned from Custom Sweeper (Midgar Area) Causes minor non-elemental damage to all enemies. Bad Breath: Learned from Marlboro (Gaea's Cliff Area) Inflicts confusion, frog, mini, poison, silence, and sleep on all opponents. Beta: Learned from Midgar Zolom (Chocobo Ranch Area) Causes medium Fire damage to all enemies. Aqualung: Learned from Harpy (Gold Saucer Area) Causes medium Water damage to all enemies. Trine: Learned from Materia Keeper (Mt. Nibel) Causes medium Lightning damage to all enemies. Magic Breath: Learned from Stilva (Inside Gaea's Cliff) Causes major Fire/Ice/Lightning damage to all opponents. ????: Learned from Jersey (Shinra Mansion) Causes non-elemental damage to a single enemy equal to the user's Maximum HP divided by their current HP. Goblin Punch: Learned from Goblin (Goblin Island) Causes non-elemental damage to a single enemy. Chocobuckle: Learned from a Chocobo (Any Chocobo track). You need to cast L4 Suicide on it after feeding it a Mimett Green. Causes non-elemental damage to a single enemy. The amount of damage depends on the number of times your party has fled from battle. L5 Death: Learned from Parasite (Northern Crater) Causes Sudden Death to all enemies if their levels are a multiple of 5. Death Sentence: Learned from Gi Spectator (Cave of the Gi) Causes a single target to have a 60 second countdown before Death is cast on them. Pandora's Box: Learned from Dragon Zombie (Northern Crater) Causes severe non-elemental damage to all enemies. g) Basic Materia Combinations Weapon: (Elemental Magic/Summon) = Elemental Your weapon now has the element of the paired Materia. Armour: (Elemental Magic/Summon) = Elemental Your armour now has the element of the paired Materia, providing you with more protection against that element. At Lv. 1 it will half the damage, at Lv. 2 it will negate the damage, and at Lv. 3 it will absorb the damage as HP. Weapon: Contain = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Stop, Petrify, or Confuse, when you attack. Armour: Contain = Added Effect You are now immune to Stop, Petrify, and Confuse. Weapon: Destruct = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Sudden Death when you attack. Armour: Destruct = Added Effect You are immune to Sudden Death. Weapon: Mystify = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Confuse or Berserk when you attack. Armour: Mystify = Added Effect You are immune to Confusion and Berserk. Weapon: Poison = Added Effect You have a chance of poisoning the enemy when you attack. Armour: Poison = Added Effect You are immune to poison. Weapon: Seal = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Silence or Sleep when you attack. Armour: Seal = Added Effect You are immune to Silence and Sleep. Weapon: Time = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Slow or Stop when you attack. Armour: Time = Added Effect You are immune to Slow and Stop. Weapon: Transform = Added Effect You have a chance of inflicting Mini or Frog when you attack. Armour: Transform = Added Effect You are immune to Mini and Frog. The following Materia combinations can be placed in the weapon or the armour. Magic Materia = All The spell now affects all enemies/allies. (Magic/Summon/Command) = Counter When hit, you counter with the paired Materia. (Magic/Summon/Command) = HP Absorb You absorb 1/10 of the damage dealt as HP. For example, 6,000 damage would restore 600 HP. (Magic/Summon/Command) = MP Absorb You absorb 1/100 of the damage dealt as MP. For example, 6,000 damage would restore 60 MP. (Magic/Summon) = MP Turbo More MP is consumed, but the spell or summon is more powerful. (Magic/Summon) = Quadra Magic The spell or summon is performed four times as long as you have sufficient MP. (Magic/Summon/Command) = Final Attack The spell/summon/command is cast when you die. Revive or Phoenix are recommended. (Magic/Summon/Command) = Added Cut After casting a spell or summon, or performing a command, you attack the enemy. (Magic/Summon/Command) = Sneak Attack You automatically cast the spell or summon, or perform the command at the beginning of battle. (Magic/Summon/Command) = Steal As Well You can steal from the enemy as you cast the spell/summon/command. The following combinations do not need to be paired together, and can be placed anywhere. W-Magic, Magic Materia You can cast two spells in one go as long as you have sufficient MP. W-Summon, Summon Materia You can cast two summons in one go as long as you have sufficient MP. Mega All, Magic Materia All of your magics (except Comet, Contain, FullCure, Shield and Ultima) now affect all enemies/allies. Mega All, Command Materia All of your commands now affect all the enemies. This also turns Attack into Slash-All. Cover, Counter Attack You take damage in place of your ally, and then counter attack. The more Counter Attacks you have equipped, the more times you retaliate. h) Advanced Materia Combinations Added Cut = Master Command Double Cut You perform a kind of 5x-Cut. HP Absorb = Master Command Added Cut = Master Command Double Cut You perform a 5x-Cut and absorb a huge amount of HP. HP Absorb = Master Command MP Absorb = Master Command Added Cut = Master Command Double Cut = Steal As Well You perform a 5x-Cut, absorb a huge amount of both HP and MP, and attempt to steal from all enemies. Added Effect = Destruct Sneak Attack = Death Blow Mega All Pre-emptive As soon as the battle starts you perform a Death Blow (which is double normal damage) to the backs of all the enemies (which is double normal damage again) with a chance of killing them instantly. A true Death Blow. HP Absorb = Master Magic/Summon MP Absorb = Master Magic/Summon MP Turbo = Master Magic/Summon Quadra Magic = Master Magic/Summon You cast a very powerful spell or summon four times, and you absorb both HP and MP. i) Character Set-ups All the Materia in this section is mastered to give the optimum effect. To have enough linked slots to equip these set-ups I recommend using Ultimate Weapons and Wizard Bracelets (16 linked slots all together). The Magician: HP Absorb = Master Magic MP Absorb = Master Magic MP Turbo = Master Magic Quadra Magic = Ultima Sneak Attack = Ultima W-Magic = Mega All Final Attack = Revive HP Plus = MP Plus This set-up is very good as it gives you access to all the spells in the game so the character has good a variety of options. The HP and MP Pluses should give the character 9999 HP and 999 MP, but it depends on your level. As soon as a battle begins you cast a boosted Ultima four times, absorbing both HP and MP, and if anything survives that onslaught then you can cast any other spell twice to finish them off. If you die then you will automatically cast Life2 on the whole party thanks to Mega All and Final Attack. The Summoner: HP Absorb = Master Summon MP Absorb = Master Summon MP Turbo = Master Summon Quadra Magic = Knights Of The Round Sneak Attack = Knights Of The Round W-Summon = Mime Final Attack = Phoenix HP Plus = MP Plus This set-up is similar to the previous one, but this takes advantage of the incredible power of summoning. The Mega All has been exchanged for Mime so the character can perform the Summon again without using any MP. The benefit of this is you will still receive HP and MP after the summoning. In case you die you will automatically cast Phoenix, which revives your party and causes Fire damage to all enemies. The Thief: HP Absorb = Master Command Steal As Well = Master Command Sneak Attack = Steal Cover = HP Plus Mega All = Luck Plus Counter = Death Blow Counter = Death Blow Counter = Death Blow This is the best set-up if you love to steal from your opponents. At the start of every battle you will perform a Steal/Mug on all opponents, absorbing HP in the process. Any command you chose will steal from all enemies due to Steal As Well and Mega All. If any member of your team is attacked then you will cover, and counter three times with a Death Blow to all enemies, stealing in the process. The Luck Plus is added to improve your chances of stealing successfully. You could also equip the Sneak Glove to improve your chances even further. The Counterer: HP Plus = Cover Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Counter Attack = Counter Attack Quite simple. Any attack that is aimed at your party is intercepted, and the poor creature that tried to annoy your teammate gets attacked 14 times. A highly recommended strategy to use against Emerald WEAPON, especially if you have Yuffie and her Conformer. The Balanced Master: Master Magic = All Master Summon = MP Absorb Master Command = HP Absorb HP Plus = MP Plus Mime = Counter W-Magic = W-Summon Final Attack = Phoenix Enemy Skill = W-Item This is my basic set-up for random battles. The Master Magic and the All allow you to cure your whole party or attack all enemies, the Master Summon and the MP Absorb mean you never run low on MP, the Master Command and the HP Absorb mean you never run low on HP, because you absorb HP when you perform 4x-Cut as well. You will perform 4x-Cut if you receive any damage as it is linked to the Counter. If you find yourselves up against a particularly nasty enemy then you will automatically cast Phoenix if you die. The Enemy Skill provides you with very useful abilities such as Shadow Flare, Pandora's Box, and Big Guard. The W-Magic, W-Summon, and W-Item allow you to use two of each in one turn, and the HP and MP Pluses are there to ensure both are at their maximum. j) Thanks, Credits, etc Firstly, I'd like to thank Square for making Final Fantasy VII. I want to thank Sony for making the PlayStation. I want to thank me for writing this guide, you for reading this guide, and I hope it has been of use to you. That's the end of this Materia guide, but if there are any questions/comments about this guide, the Materia system, or any other aspect of Final Fantasy VII then please email me at matt16471111@hotmail.com.
