A quick walkthrough guide to Portal - Part of the Orange Box for the Xbox 360. Portal is a clever puzzle game which involves opening portals to solve various puzzles. I'd recommend spending a little bit of time with each puzzle if you do happen to get stuck before checking out this walkthrough guide - feels far more rewarding to solve each puzzle on your own. POINTERS Understanding Portals: Understanding the use of the portals is key to the game. There are two portal used, a yellow one and a blue one. Passing through either portal will cause you to exit through the other portal and vice versa. Cameras - There is an achievement for knocking the security cameras off the wall so when you have the portal gun be sure to knock any cameras off the wall by opening a portal behind them. Big Red Buttons - Whenever you see a big red button then you'll have to place a block on top to keep the button pressed - or stand on it yourself. Glowing ball - From puzzle 6 onwards you'll have to use a glowing ball to solve puzzles - you need to fire the glowing ball into the open device. Careful though because if the ball strikes you then you will die. White tiles - In many of the puzzles there are white tiles that give some sort of hint towards what you need to do. GAME WALKTHROUGH Wait for the countdown to stop then exit through the glowing portal, make your way around the room and through the open door. Stand on the red button and the door opens - come off the button and the door closes and a block will drop. Pick up the block and place it on the red button to keep the door open. Head through the door and into the chamber to finish the starter. PUZZLE 01/19 Drop down the ledge and turn to face the wall behind you. The portal in front of you changes to three different locations, when you see the block head through and collect the block then come back out and wait till you see the room with the red button. Go through and place the block on the button then come back out and head through one last time when you see the opened door. GO through the door and into the chamber. PUZZLE 02/19 Continue ahead and wait for the door on your right to open. Head down the stairs and wait for the portal to open on your right. Head through and collect the portal gun then use it to knock the cameras off the walls then place a portal on any good wall and head through. Turn to your right and walk into the chamber. PUZZLE 03/19 Place a portal on the wall near to the level sign and head through - you'll be on the other side of the gap now and will see the chamber to your right. Face the chamber and place a portal on the wall beside it and then head back through the yellow portal to exit beside the chamber. Head inside to complete this level. PUZZLE 04/19 Walk ahead and you'll see another big red button, continue past and you'll see a block fall to the area below. Place the portal on the wall beside the block and head through the yellow portal and collect the block then return through and place it onto the big red button to open the door ahead. Walk through and into the chamber. PUZZLE 05/19 Head into the larger room and you'll see two big red buttons on the floor and two raised platforms. The one on the right has the block the one on the left has a yellow portal. Fire the blue portal onto any nearby wall and walk through. Then fire another portal over to the platform with the block and walk back through the yellow portal and collect the block - drop down and place it onto the nearest big red button. Behind you is a lowered level. Jump down and fire a blue portal onto the wall. Collect the block and walk through, drop down and then place the block onto the big red button to open the doorway. Walk through and there will be a glass roof. Place a portal on the ground and walk into it. You'll drop onto the glass roof which is now the floor - walk into the chamber to finish off this level. PUZZLE 06/19 Walk ahead and on your left you'll see a glowing ball pass between the ground and the device at the top. On the right there is an open device at the bottom. Place the portal directly above the device on the right (the roof has a red glow on it). The glowing ball will enter the open device which closes to operate the lift ahead of you. Climb onto the lift and then into the chamber. PUZZLE 07/19 Walk forward and down the stairs, shoot the blue portal onto the wall on the right where the glowing ball strikes. The glowing ball will pass through and cause the raised walkway ahead to move. Place a blue portal on the roof above the raised portal (must be on the left hand side). Wait for the walkway to appear below you then drop through the yellow portal onto the wallkway. When it reaches the other side jump off and into the chamber. PUZZLE 08/19 Walk forward and you'll see a rather slimey looking floor below - fall into this and you'll die pretty quickly. Fire a blue portal onto the wall ahead where the ball strikes. It will then exit the yellow portal but be nowhere near the open device. Fire another blue portal onto the wall on the left across from the open device before the ball passes through the yellow portal. When the ball enters the open device the walkway will move. Place a blue portal on the wall beside you and walk through. You'll be on the ledge on the left across from the moving walkway. Fire a blue portal onto the wall just above where the walkway starts then turn to face the yellow portal. When the walkway appears in front of you jump on and then jump off at the other end and exit through the chamber. PUZZLE 09/19 Walk forward and you'll see the yellow portal on a raised platform on the left and a block in front of you - if you try to walk the block through the glowing force field to the red button it will be destroyed. Instead place a blue portal beside the block and carry it through. On the raised platform you'll see an opening above the force field. Shoot a blue portal through then take teh block through and place it on the big red button to open the door. Walk through and into the chamber to move onto the next puzzle. PUZZLE 10/19 Walk forward and you'll reach a ledge that is too high to jump onto. Up high behind you is a yellow portal, place a blue portal onto the wall beside you to jump through and onto the raised ledge. Climb the stairs and pass through the doorway which will close. Again there is a yellow portal high behind you. Walk to the edge of the platform you are on and fire a portal onto the floor below. Drop down and through the portal, you'll then leap across the large gap and through the door. Walk forward and on the level below you will see a yellow portal below. Turn and look above you and you'll see a grey wall on some pistons. Place a blue portal on this wall and jump through the yellow portal. You'll leap across the gap. Turn around and you'll see part of the grey wall extend outwards. Place a blue portal onto this wall then jump down back through the yellow portal to leap across to the chamber - head inside to move on to the next puzzle. PUZZLE 11/19 Walk through and up the stairs. Look out the glass window and you'll see another portal gun below moving. Place a blue portal on a nearby wall and wait for the yellow portal to appear beside the platform with the small red button on it. This opens the door high ahead of you. Quickly fire a blue portal into this room and wait for the yellow portal to appear behind you again. Walk through and fire the blue portal onto the wall where the glowing ball strikes it. Then wait for the yellow portal to move to where the moving walkway will now be and climb onto it. Take this new portal gun and then press the small red button that appears. A door high ahead of you opens, fire the blue portal onto the wall here then turn around and face the moving walkway. Using the left trigger fire a yellow portal onto the wall the moving walkway leads to and jump on and through the portal then just walk into the chamber to finish this puzzle. PUZZLE 12/19 Move forward and stand on the white tile. Look up and place the blue portal onto the grey wall above. Look down and place the yellow portal on the floor below and jump down through the portal. In the same way on the next platform place the blue portal on the grey wall above and jump down through the yellow portal. Stand on the big red button then step off and the grey wall being will move out and tilt and an angle. Place the blue portal on the angled part of the wall and jump through the yellow portal again. Pick up the block and jump back across to the big red button and place the block on it. Then drop through the yellow portal again and head through the door into the chamber. PUZZLE 13/19 Walk into the room ahead of you. Place the blue portal on the wall beside you and then place the yellow portal on the upper wall to the left beside the block. Walk through and collect the block and place it on the big red button. Go back through the portal and through the open door. In this next room there are two big red buttons on raised platforms and a glowing ball. Drop down into the room and place a blue portal onto the wall where the glowing ball strikes and a yellow portal above the open device. This causes the walkway on the right to start moving. Place a yellow portal on thr roof above the middle of the walkways path and a blue portal on the ground beside you. When the walkway is below you drop through and pick up the block. Drop down and move to the middle of the room. Place a yellow portal on the white tile above the first big red button and then fire a blue portal under the block which should fall onto the button. Place the yellow portal above the second big red button and drop through the blue portal. The door high above will open. Fire a blue portal through the door and onto the wall then drop down and fire a yellow portal onto the wall and walk through then head into the chamber. PUZZLE 14/19 Move ahead and you'll face a T junction with a lift ahead of you. Go left and walk up the stairs that appear. You'll see an open device and a block high up on the left. Place a blue on the wall across from the block and then turn towards where the stairs were. Place a yellow portal on the dropped floor and fall down through it. You should land beside the block. Pick it up and walk towards the stairs. Drop the block and place a yellow portal above the open device. Pick up the block and head towards where you started and place the block on the big red button. Head through the newly opened door ahead and wait for the platforms to rise before jumping across. Place a blue portal on the wall where the glowing ball strikes it then jump through the blue portal after the ball passes through. Head back to the start and jump onto the lift and into the chamber. PUZZLE 15/19 Walk forward and you'll see a force field in the way up ahead. Turn and face the chamber you came from and you'll see a grey wall up high. Place the yellow portal here and then place the blue portal on the ground ahead of you. The trick here is to walk through the blue portal and then fall through the yellow portal and back through the blue one so you are thrown over the force field. Walk round the corridor and you'll see more force fields. Place the blue portal on the wall where the glowing ball strikes it and the yellow portal above the lift so that it heads through the other force field where the open device is. When the ball is there place the yellow portal above the device and the blue one on the wall where the ball will strike to close the device and operate the nearby lift. Go up the lift and head right. Head towards the force field. Again you need to jump over the wall ahead of you. Place the blue force filed up high ahead of you then go up the stairs on the right. Here place a yellow portal on the ground and jump through. As you jump place another yellow portal where you are going to land to allow you to jump even further and over the wall. There is a grey wall above the open device. Place the yellow portal here and place the blue one on the ground - same as before walk through the blue portal then fall back through it and head over the wall. Place the blue portal on the right wall directly across from the angled wall then place the yellow portal on the left wall where the glowing ball strikes it. The ball should now enter the open device. Place the yellow portal above the two angled walls as high as you can then place the blue portal on the ground below - step through and fall back through to head back over the wall. The moving walkways to the right are moving but they move towards you. Place the yellow portal on the wall ahead and the blue one on a wall nearby. Step out onto the walkway as it passes and quickly fire a yellow portal onto the wall at the next corner. Head back to the end of the walkway and jump off then head through the blue portal when the next walkway passes. Then turn and fire the yellow portal onto a wall in the next room and place a blue portal on a nearby wall and jump through. You need to be quite quick in this area. Head onto the lift on the right and go up. Turn and face the opposite side and to the left you'll notice a small room. Place the yellow portal in this room and the blue portal in the room you are in behind the small red button. The trick is to press the two red buttons to open the doors then quickly place the yellow portal on the ground where the glowing ball strikes and the blue portal on the wall directly across from the open device. Once this is done go up on the lift and into the chamber to end the level. PUZZLE 16/19 Exit the chamber and wait by the nearby door. When the door opens place the blue portal on the wall and then place the yellow portal under the drone to knock it down - either that or go beside it and knock it down. Move along the corridor and you'll see another drone. Place a blue portal on the wall to the right and then a yellow portal beside you. Head through then place a yellow portal behind the drone and go through the blue portal and knock it over. Continue on and you'll see another drone's laser to the left. Place a yellow portal above it on the cross then place a blue portal under the drone you just knocked over to knock over the second drone. Continue forward and you'll see a drone behind a wall. There are two blocks nearby. Grab one and place it on the floor beside you. Put a yellow portal above the drone and then a blue portal below the block to knock it over. Do a similar thing with the drone to the right using the other block. There are two more drones in the next room. Move the blocks onto the grey floor and do the same as before to knock them down. In the next room there are tree drones, the nearest one you can place a portal under to knock over. The other two you have to drop items on using the two portals as before. When they are down place a block on the big red button. Look through the door and fire a blue portal onto the wall behind the fence. Then on the nearby wall place a yellow portal and walk through, knock over the drone then look through the fence to the right. Place a blue portal to the rear of the drone and walk through the portal and knock over this drone and then enter the chamber. PUZZLE 17/19 Walk ahead and pick up the weighted companion cube. Head into the next room and use it to climb the ledges to the right. Head along the corridor using the cube to deflect the on coming glowing ball. Walk backwards along the next corridor and into the room at the end. Place the cube down and then place a blue portal on the middle of the angled wall then head back to the long corridor and place a yellow portal where the glowing ball strikes the wall. The ball should bounce into the open device. Grab your cube and drop down off the ledge and into the room with the big red button - ignore the first big red button for now and head to the back left. Using the cube climb up beside the second big button and place the cube on top. Head back out the room and place a blue portal on the piece of wall that is sticking out directly ahead of you. Place a yellow portal on the wall beside the door to the long corridors and head through and back along the long corridor. Place a yellow portal at the end of the other corridor and head back to the room with the big red buttons. Wait for the glowing ball to pass through the portals and stay out of it's way, as soon as it passes you step onto the big red button to open the door and allow the glowing ball to enter the open device. Grab your cube and head into the room on the right, use the cube to deflect the glowing ball into the open device. Use the portals to head back to where the room with the corridors are - use the raised walk ways to jump across and go up the stairs. Place your cube on the big red button at the top and then head down through the opened door. Press the red button then quickly go and grab your cube and place it in the incinerator then head into the nearby chamber to exit the level. PUZZLE 18/19 Walk forward and you'll see the slimey floor ahead. Place a blue portal on the roof above and behind you and the yellow portal on the ground so that you are thrown across the gap. When you reach the other side look right. Place a blue portal on the roof above the next platform (To the left back corner) and then place a yellow portal on the grey wall in front of you and jump through the portal. Place a blue portal on the roof above the next platform then go back and jump through the yellow portal again. Place a blue portal on the wall of the next platform and place a yellow portal on the ground and go through, you'll be beside a door across from you is a big red button. Place a blue portal on the wall sticking out above the door and a yellow portal on the ground and leap through to head over to the big red button. Ignore this for now and walk forward. Press the small red button and go out the opened gap and go left. This part is quite tricky, avoid the gun drones , you need to place a portal where the glowing ball strikes the wall - it changes so any of the four places will do. Then place a yellow portal across from each of the gun drones in turn to knock them over. This next part requires some quick reactions so be prepared. On the far left there is part of a wall sticking out. Place a yellow portal here. Stand at the back left facing this wall and you'll see another part of the wall sticking out. The trick here when the glowing ball leaves the yellow portal to place a yellow portal on this closer wall and a blue portal on the ground and jump through and press the small red button to open the door and allow the glowing ball to reach the open device. Head back to the middle and the walkway will now be moving. Jump on and head over to the other side, you can only jump to the lower level so head down and place a yellow portal on a wall on the end you just came from and a blue portal on the wall beside you. Press the small red button and go through the portal - again you need to be quite quick. Place a yellow portal on the angled wall that sticks out and then go to the right of the room and place a blue portal on the ground of the low platform and jump down through the portal. You should be flung across the room to the higher platform. Grab the block and jump onto the moving walkway and over to the other side. Place the block down and head back over to the lower level and do the same as before with the red button. This time when you get back over to the other side grab the block and go through the gap and place the block on the big red button. Place a blue portal on the wall beside the door then jump down to the left and place a yellow portal on the ground and go through the portals and head through the door. Again this part is rather tricky and requires some quick reactions. Up head fall down onto the platform and place a yellow portal on the platform above the slimey floor. Turn to the left and there is a big drop - place a blue portal on the ground here and jump down through it. As you leap into the air when you exit the portal you need to fire a blue portal on the next platform - when you exit this portal you need to place a yellow portal on the next platform - the a blue one on the next and so - you'll then have to place a yellow portal onto an angled piece of wall to fling you across to the chamber - head inside to finish the level. PUZZLE 19/19 Head out of the chamber and into the first room. Up ahead you'll see two angled walls. Place a blue portal on the one on the right and a yellow portal on the one on the left. When the glowing ball exits the blue portal quickly place the blue portal on any other wall in the room. The glowing ball should then bounce into the open device. A walkway is now moving . Jump on then jump off before the door. Place a yellow portal on the wall beside the small red button. Here you need to press the button and when the door opens place a blue portal on any part of the visible wall. Stand at the yellow portal and when the walkway appears in front of you jump on. Up ahead there is a glowing ball directly in your path, place a yellow portal high on the wall and a blue one where the glowing ball is striking the wall to remove it from your way. Do the same for the next glowing ball, you'll then see a wall directly in front you you. Place a yellow portal on this wall and a blue portal on the wall behind it to the left. You need to time this well so that you head through the portal and are able to get onto the walkway on the other side. Ride the walkway towards the fire - now it would be silly to go into a fire so place a yellow portal on the wall up ahead of you and a blue portal onto the wall on your right and jump through. Move the yellow portal to the very top of the wall and place a blue portal on the ground, yep you guessed it - fall through to fling yourself up to the upper level. Go up the stairs to the left and then use the portals to get past the broken stairs. Go through the door and continue up the stairs, use the portals to get past the locked fence and go through the door. Again use the portals to get past the large fan on your left - the fan blades will block your portal beams so it may take a few goes. Walk down the small ramp and then place a yellow portal on the wall at the far side above the platform - place a blue portal on the ramp and go through. Walk round and you'll see the platform is broken. Place a yellow portal on the wall at the back above the broken walkway and a blue portal on the wall behind you and then jump through, walk along and into the next room. Place a blue portal on the high wall to your left and a yellow portal on the ground and walk through. Then place both portals on the ground so that when you jump through you are thrown into the air and can land on the platform across from you and can continue up the stairs. Go up the stairs then jump over the rail and into the broken pipe. Fall through then go through the force field and stand on the big red button. Place a yellow portal on the wall on the other side of the door the place a blue portal on a nearby wall and go through. Fall into the chamber and to the bottom. Climb out and place a blue portal on the grey roof. Place a yellow portal on the bottom of the chamber and go through. Crawl out and jump onto the two rising platforms - from the top turn back and place a yellow portal on the grey floor of the platform above - then go back and jump up through the blue portal. Wait for the large piston to move and jump on and ride it to the other side - up ahead is a fence - place a blue portal on the other side and then go back and through the yellow portal. Move the yellow portal to the wall high up across from the opening and jump through the blue portal to reach the opening. Walk round and you'll see a room with large pistons moving - head in and jump on the one in the middle - when you reach the top you'll see an opening - place a yellow portal in the wall in front of you and then a blue portal on a nearby wall when you get back to the bottom and go through. Walk of the ramp and into the next room. Place a yellow portal high to your left - you can just see the grey roof. Then place a blue portal on the grey roof nearby where the piston hits. Climb on the piston and go through then jump across the two pistons onto the grey floor. Place a yellow portal on the top right corner of the wall ahead and a blue portal on the ground below. Go through the blue one to fling yourself across to the next ledge. You'll reach some small fast moving pistons - use the portals to get past them. DO the same with the two large ones. Above you now will be lots of large pistons. Use the portals to get as high up as you can, you'll see the way ahead through a fence so again place one portal on the other side of this fence on the floor and go through. Jump down onto the pipe and crouch through the gap. About two thirds along the pipe there is another one below you to the right. Jump down onto this and go left. Crouch under the piston and into the corner. Place the blue portal above where the piston hits the wall and the yellow portal on the bottom right corner just above the slimey floor. When the piston hits the wall jump through the yellow portal and onto the piston and head over to the other side. Jump over the rail and down the gap. Walk onto the pistons and you'll fall down - there are three doors and behind each are gun drones. When the first door opens place a portal behind the drone and another on a nearby wall and go through and knock it over. Do the same for the others. In one of these rooms there is a hatch, if you look up through the hatch there should be a small grey wall bedside a tube visible Place a yellow portal here and a blue one nearby and go through. Place a blue portal on the wall above the tube and go through the yellow one so you are now on the tube. Jump over to the next platform and there is a small hole you need to crouch through and down and knock over another drone. Jump down and directly above you place a yellow portal on the angled wall and a blue portal on the ground below - use these to fling you up onto the platform across from you. Walk along into the corridor and through the door on the left. Press the small red button and a rocket launcher will appear and fire at you and break the glass - use it to do the same on the other glass panel then go through the door. In the next room there is another glass panel blocking the way. Place a blue portal on the wall across from it and go back to the rocket launcher. Place a yellow portal on the wall and stand in front of it so the rocket goes through the portal when you move out the way. Go back through and past the now broken glass. You'll reach a broken vent - go back to the room with the rocket launcher and grab a chair and use that to climb into the vent. Place a yellow portal on the wall below the fan then go back and place a blue portal on a nearby wall and go through. Turn and face the slimey floor. Place a blue portal above the red wall area and a yellow one nearby and go through. Walk along to the end and use the portals to get onto the next platform. Fire a portal through the drain and use the other to get up there. Use the portals to get you up onto the next level. This part is either really easy or rather annoying. Loads of doors will open - behind each is a gun drone. As soon as one opens use the portals to get in behind it and knock it down. Now same as before use the portals to get into each little room and knock over each drone in turn. The last one is up high. Place the yellow portal on the angled wall across from it and a blue portal on the ground below you and get flung towards the next portal - as you fly place a blue portal onto the next angled wall and fly through that onto the upper ledge. Walk ahead and two drones will appear - place a portal below each of them to get rid of them. Place a yellow portal below the gap here and then go back towards the main room and place a blue portal on the ground below and jump down - this should fling you high up through the gap. Walk over to the green generators and there is a grey wall above them. Place the blue portal here then go back and jump down the gap through the yellow portal to get flung across to the next platform. Run across here and through the door ahead. Turn to the left and along the corridor and then up the stairs to the right and through the door to the last part of the game. In the middle is the machine - directly behind it is an incinerator and to the left is a booth with a small red button. Part of the machine will fall off - pick it up and place it beside the incinerator. Place a yellow portal on the wall and a blue portal over beside the booth and go in and press the small red button and then go back and drop the part into the incinerator. While the machine is talking quickly place a blue portal underneath it and then move back. Place a yellow portal onto any part of the wall and stand in front of it. A rocket launcher will appear - use it to fire a rocket at the machine - another part should fall off and land on some pipes. Place a portal behind them and use another to grab the part. Again use the portals to place the part in the incinerator and repeat the steps to get another part to fall from the machine. This part is a little harder to reach - it's up high on the machine. Place a yellow portal as high as you can on the wall beside it and a blue portal on any part of the wall in front of you and jump through - it is possible. Repeat the steps to get the part of the machine in the incinerator and for another part to fall from the machine. Another hard part to reach. Place a yellow portal on the wall above the part and a blue portal on the ground, you need to jump through and hit the part on the way down with your feet to knock it to the ground. Once you've got it repeat the steps to place it in the incinerator to destroy the machine and to complete the portal game. Oh and get some cake. Now sit back enjoy the cake and the catchy little ending tune. The End Hopefully this walkthrough has assisted you in any of the puzzles that had you confused. Don't stop there though, completing the game unlocks some new challenges such as completing puzzles in a certain time limit/ certain number of moves and also some advanced puzzles where they are a bit harder than the original. I'll not walk you through them as by now you should understand what needs to be done for each puzzle and spend that extra little bit of time to work out what has changed and how to solve it.
