Retro Game Walkthroughs for Pokemon (Gameboy)
Submitted By: Venomous Albino
If you're playing Pokémon Stadium, you'll be wanting to use your
own hand-reared monsters rather than the crappy Rental ones. A
Pokémon that you've worked hard to train up yourself will kick a
Rental monster's backside all over the Stadium, so capturing
your own beasts and raising them to pain-wreaking status is the
best idea. But to do this, you'll need to know how to progress
through the Game Boy games with the minimum of fuss in order to
bag the best monsters for the job. Have no fear, master trainer
Dark Mark is here!

GYM LEADERS:
Of course, finding the very best wild Pokémon won't happen
unless you've beaten the Gym Leaders and gained access to every
area in the game. Listed below are tactics for defeating each of
the eight Gym Leaders.

Pewter City Gym Leader - Brock
Pokémon:
- Lv 12 Geodude (Rock / Ground)
- Lv 14 Onix (Rock / Ground)

Tactics:
The difficulty of this fight depends heavily on which Pokémon
you chose at the beginning of the game. If you chose Bulbasaur
or Squirtle then it'll be a walkover, as long as you've trained
them enough for them to learn their first elemental moves
(Bubble for Squirtle and Razor Leaf for Bulbasaur). Keep using
these moves and you'll win easily. The fight will be a lot
harder if you chose Charmander. To beat Brock using Charmander,
make sure you've trained it to at least Level 16 so that it
evolves in Charmeleon, slightly increasing its' strength against
any Rock type attacks. Beat Brock and you'll recieve the Boulder
Badge and the Bide TM.

-

Cerulean City Gym Leader - Misty
Pokémon:
- Lv 18 Staryu (Water)
- Lv 21 Starmie (Water / Psychic)

Tactics:
To make this fight pass by with a blink of an eye, go back to
Viridian Forest, nab yourself a Pikachu and train it up to about
the same level as Misty's Pokémon as the li'l yellow fella will

come in handy no matter what Pokémon you chose at the beginning
of the game. Pikachu teamed up with Bulbasaur will give Misty a
real pasting in no time... and sticking to Pikachu will be the
best tactics to take should you have chosen Squirtle or
Charmander. Start off by using Thunder Wave to paralyse Misty's
monsters, then use repeated Thundershocks until you win. Defeat
Misty and you'll recieve the Cascade Badge and the Bubblebeam
TM.

-

Vermillion City Gym Leader - Lt. Surge
Pokémon:
- Lv 21 Voltorb (Electric)
- Lv 18 Pikachu (Electric)
- Lv 24 Raichu (Electric)

Tactics:
This fight can be easily won if you make your way to Diglett's
Cave before entering the Gym and catch yourself a Diglett or
Dugtrio. Train it to around Lv 25 - making you sure it knows the
Dig move - then take it to meet Lt. Surge. Repeated use of the
Dig move will make short work of Surge's squad. Alternatively,
bring out Bulbasaur as Electric attacks have little effect
against it. Defeat Lt. Surge and you'll recieve the Thunder
Badge and Thunderbolt TM.

-

Celadon City Gym Leader - Erika
Pokémon:
- Lv 29 Victreebel (Grass / Poison)
- Lv 24 Tangela (Grass)
- Lv 29 Vileplume (Grass / Poison

Tactics:
If you chose Charmander as your starting Pokémon, then this is
its' chance to shine. As always, make sure its' trained to a
similar experience level as Erika's squad. The Ember and Slash
moves will prove invaluable in this fight. Other useful Pokémon
include Growlithe and Vulpix. Defeat Erika and you'll recieve
the Rainbow Badge and the Mega Drain TM.

-

Saffron City Gym Leader - Sabrina
Pokémon:
- Lv 38 Kadabra (Psychic)
- Lv 37 Mr Mime (Psychic)
- Lv 38 Venomoth (Bug / Poison)
- Lv 43 Alakazam (Psychic)

Tactics:
Keep Bulbasaur well away from Sabrina for a start, as he'll find
his backside instantly whupped across the Gym in no time. A
Psychic Pokémon of your own will fare well against Venomoth but
your success against the rest of Sabrina's squad will rest
purely on your abilities as a trainer. Use sleep-inducing
attacks and follow up with the strongest attacks your squad's
monsters possess. Defeat Sabrina and you'll recieve the Marsh
Badge and the Psywave TM.

-

Fuchsia City Gym Leader - Koga
Pokémon:
- Lv 37 Koffing (Poison)
- Lv 39 Muk (Poison)
- Lv 37 Koffing (Poison)
- Lv 43 Weezing (Poison)

Tactics:
Koga's all-Poison sqaud will crumble under the might of Psychic
attacks. Go find yourself an Abra and train it to around Lv 40
so that it will have learned the Psybeam move. This will make
incredibly short work of Koga's monsters, no problem. Weezing
will usually be the last Pokémon you'll fight against when
battling Koga and - strangely enough - does have the tendency to
use the Explosion move; making itself faint and therefore ending
the fight prematurely. Defeat Koga and you'll recieve the Soul
Badge and the Toxic TM.

-

Cinnabar Island Gym Leader - Blaine
Pokémon:
- Lv 42 Growlithe (Fire)
- Lv 40 Ponyta (Fire)
- Lv 42 Rapidash (Fire)
- Lv 47 Arcanine (Fire)

Tactics:
There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to
tackle Blaine without too many problems. There are literally
loads of different water Pokémon in the surrounding areas for
you to catch, train and use against Blaine. Moves like Surf and
Hydro Pump will drown Blaine's beasts with little effort and /
or fuss. Defeat Blaine and you'll recieve the Volcano Badge and
the Fire Blast TM.

-

Viridian City Gym Leader - Giovanni
Pokémon:
- Lv 45 Rhyhorn (Rock / Ground)
- Lv 42 Dugtrio (Ground)
- Lv 44 Nidoqueen (Poison / Ground)
- Lv 45 Nidoking (Poison / Ground)
- Lv 50 Rhydon (Rock / Ground)

Tactics:
By this time, you should have at least six Pokémon all at around
Lv 50. If not, then go out and do some training as you'll need
your squad to be at least on a par with Giovanni's in terms of
experience level. Strong Water attacks will be invaluable
against every Pokémon in Giovanni's squad but, failing that,
Grass attacks will prove useful against Rhyhorn, Dugtrio and
Rhydon. Use Psychic attacks against Nidoqueen and Nidoking if at
all possible. Defeat Giovannia and you'll recieve the Earth
Badge and Fissure TM.

----------

The Elite Four:
After you've beaten all eight Gym Leaders and negotiated your
way through the tricky Victory Road, it's time to take on the
Elite Four. These four trainers can be extremely tough if you
haven't done enough training and even harder to beat if you
don't have a varied sqaud of six Pokémon. Take the time to train
up six Pokémon to at least Lv 60 before you enter the first
room.

-

Elite Four Member 1 - Lorelei
Pokémon:
- Lv 54 Dewgong (Water / Ice)
- Lv 53 Cloyster (Water / Ice)
- Lv 54 Slowbro (Water / Psychic)
- Lv 56 Jynx (Ice / Psychic)
- Lv 58 Lapras (Water / Ice)

Tactics:
Despite the abundance of Ice Pokémon in Lorelei's squad, Fire
Pokémon are actually a big no-no in this battle. Instead, bring
along a strong Electric Pokémon to deal with Lorelei's monsters.
Only use Fire Pokémon against Jynx.

-

Elite Four Member 2 - Bruno
Pokémon:
- Lv 53 Onix (Rock / Ground)
- Lv 55 Hitmonlee (Fighting)
- Lv 55 Hitmonchan (Fighting)
- Lv 53 Onix (Rock / Ground)
- Lv 58 Machamp (Fighting)

Tactics:
Bringing along your evolved Bulbasaur or Squirtle will ensure
your victory against Bruno's duo of Onix, while Psychic attacks
will obliterate the other three Pokémon in Bruno's team. Under
no circumstances should you use an Ice Pokémon (even against the
two Onix) as they're extremely vulnerable to Rock and Fighting
attacks.

-

Elite Four Member 3 - Agatha
Pokémon:
- Lv 56 Gengar (Ghost / Poison)
- Lv 56 Golbat (Poison / Flying)
- Lv 55 Haunter (Ghost / Poison)
- Lv 58 Arbok (Poison)
- Lv 60 Gengar (Ghost / Poison)

Tactics:
Every Pokémon in Agatha's team is a Poison type, so strong
Psychic attacks will see her off with very few problems. You
will probably find yourself using a lot of Healing items in this
fight, as every one of Agatha's Pokémon will inevitably use the
Toxic move which poisonsyour Pokémon; gradually chipping away
their HP.

-

Elite Four Member 4 - Lance
Pokémon:
- Lv 58 Gyarados (Water / Flying)
- Lv 56 Dragonair (Dragon)
- Lv 56 Dragonair (Dragon)
- Lv 60 Aerodactyl (Rock / Flying)
- Lv 62 Dragonite (Dragon / Flying)

Tactics:
Dragon Pokémon are undoutably the most irritatingly difficult
Pokémon in the game, as few attacks have any effect on them.
Luckilly, Ice attacks will send them packing, so repeated use of
the Blizzard or Ice Beam attacks will see of the two Dragonair
and the mighty Dragonite. Electric attacks will see off Gyarados
and Aerodactyl easily.

----------

RIVAL:
The first three Pokémon in your Rival's team are always the
same; the other three changing depending on his and your choice
of starting Pokémon But whatever his team may consist of, it's
the perfect example of how varied your own team should be if
you're to have a hope in hell of defeating him.

Pokémon:
- Lv 61 Pidgeot (Normal / Flying)
- Lv 59 Alakazam (Psychic)
- Lv 61 Rhydon (Rock / Ground)

Use Electric or Ice attacks against Pidgeot and Water, Grass or
Ice attacks against Rhydon. Your Rival's Alakazam will prove a
tricky opponent. Your best tactic would be to send it to sleep
then attack it at your own leisure.

Variation 1 (if you chose Bulbasaur):
- Lv 61 Exeggutor (Grass / Psychic)
- Lv 63 Gyarados (Water / Flying)
- Lv 65 Charizard (Fire / Flying)

Your Bulbasaur (which should be Venusaur by now) will - for once
- be almost useless to you. Gyarados being a Flying type sadly
cancels out the effectiveness of Grass type attacks, so an
Electric assault is what you should be concerntrating on. The
same goes for Charizard, too. Exeggutor - despite high HP -
isn't too tricky as its' attacks are fairly weak. The only
attack that will cause you any frustration is Barrage, but
strong Fire and Ice attacks will see Exeggutor off for good.

Variation 2 (if you chose Squirtle):
- Lv 61 Gyarados (Water / Flying)
- Lv 63 Arcanine (Fire)
- Lv 65 Venusaur (Grass / Poison)

Your Squirtle (probably Blastoise by now) should be used to give
Arcanine a severe beating. Strong Ice attacks will see off both
Gyarados and Venusaur easily.

Variation 3 (if you chose Charmander):
- Lv 61 Arcanine (Fire)
- Lv 63 Exeggutor (Grass / Poison)
- Lv 65 Blastoise (Water)

As is the case throughout the entire game, choosing Charmander
will result in you having to face the hardest of your Rival's
variations, as you'll need three completely different Pokémon in
order to win. Grass or Electric attacks should obviously be used
against Blastoise, Flying or Ice attacks will see off Exeggutor
and Ground or Water attacks will ensure your win against
Arcanine.

----------
