Retro Game Walkthroughs for Dark Chronicle (PlayStation 2)
Submitted By: mikelar
The sequel to a game that seemed to slip past the general gaming public like a naughty bar of soap, Dark Chronicle (also known as Dark Cloud 2 to our chubby cousins in the US) really is in a league of it's own when it comes to console RPGs. If there had to be a description of the game, it'd read something like "Zelda meets Suikoden who falls in love with Skies of Arcadia who then gets a gang beating by the entire Final Fantasy series, then dressed up in its Sunday best and pushed out, naked, into a room full of relatives all in very nice cell shaded graphics". Kinda strange and definitely a game you have to play yourself to get a even the slightest grasp of how much of a gem it is.

Anyway, enough of the praise because, as good as the game is, there are some difficult parts here. As such, I decided to write a sort of mini-walkthrough on the most important aspects of the game (weapons, inventions and, strangely, fishing) to aid those struggling to finish this epic game.

I'd like to say that even though this walkthrough was written by me, mikelar, there is information in here copied from other sources on the Internet because, quite frankly, even I didn't know how to get a Heela by breeding a Gummy and a Priscleen together. The point is, the main paragraphs introducing different sections or details is my own work.

Now, on with the show. We'll start with a nice aspect of the game, the weapons.

Weapons:

Both Max and Monica have very different weapons. Where as Monica uses swords in her right hand and magic armbands in her left, Max uses wrenches/hammers in his right and a gun in his left. It is with this combination that you are expected to defeat the various monsters in Dark Chronicle. To make defeating monsters easier, you can upgrade your weapon either generally or specifically. Generally upgrading your weapon will make it a good all rounder but it will take you longer to defeat certain monsters relative to what specifically you could have upgraded your weapon in. For example, fish/frogs are considered 'Scale' monsters so upgrading your weapon specifically in this attribute will make you a fearsome warrior against this type but it may take you longer to defeat a monster in the 'Beast' category if you haven't improved that ability. The other weapon abilities you can upgrade are, with their abbreviation:

At - Attack
Fl - Flame
Ch - Chill
Li - Lightning
Cy - Cyclone
Sm - Smash
Ex - Exorcism
Be - Beast
Sc - Scale

Weapons can also have conditions applied to them so that you can gain more money from monsters or so that you can poison them, not all of them are good though. All the conditions are listed:

Wealth: 30% increase in Gilda dropped by monsters.
Poverty: 30% decrease in Gilda dropped by monsters.
Poison: Poisons enemies, takes 1 away every 5 seconds.
Stop: Chance of freezing enemy movement for a set time.
Steal: Chance of stealing an item after an attack.
Critical: 15% chance of inflicting more than usual damage.
Durable: Slower WHP decrease.
Fragile: Faster WHP decrease.
Absorb: Chance you'll get energy from hitting monsters.
Heal: Restores 1 HP every 5 seconds.
Dark: Inflicts 1.5x damage, but you lose 1% of your max HP each time
ABS Up: 20% increase in ABS dropped by monsters

Inventions:

A huge part of Dark Chronicle and a brilliant, original, concept that has made the game fun even when you're not playing the main game! The invention element of Dark Chronicle involves taking 3 ideas and coming up with a way to make something useful out of them, an invention if you will, simple! During the first few minutes of playing the game, Max will receive a camera which will enable him to photograph objects, monsters, people and just about anything else in Dark Chronicle that may be of interest. With these photographs, Max is then able to create an invention as explained above which he can build and use.

There are an amazing 294 photos in Dark Chronicle but not all are need to create an invention (of which there are, a very respectable, 128). So you don't have to aimlessly wander around each dungeon and city, here is a list of each and every invention with each of the 3 photographs needed to invent it. Once invented, select make, then highlight the invention to see what you require to build it, easy!

The inventions descriptions shown here are set out so they read:

' Invention - 1st Idea & 2nd Idea & 3rd Idea'

It isn't important in which order you enter your ideas for an invention. Right then, all the inventions are shown under an appropriate heading, see what photo you need then go and find it!

Fish:

When you receive the fishing rod during the first few hours of gameplay, you'll be able to fish in the many ponds, lakes, rivers and oceans in Dark Chronicle. Catching fish will result in you receiving "FP" or fishing points which you can add to your rod to improves its ability. At first, you'll only be able to catch smaller fish but as you upgrade your rod, you'll be able to land some 'proper beauties'! Each rod characteristic is shown with its definition so you know which ability you need to upgrade if you're struggling to reel some of the bigger fish in:

Flight - How far you can cast the bait.
Strength - How quickly you can reel in.
Resilience - How long you can reel in without having to stop.
Grip - How much the controller rumbles when a fish is about to bite.
Luck - General improvement in fishing skill.

Flight, Strength and Luck all affect how big the fish is that you're reeling in so improve these if you're only catching tiddlers!

After you have invented an aquarium, the fish you catch can be placed in and fed, breed or fought together. Each of the three tanks; the Battle, Breeding and Rec tank, all of which are available when you invent the aquarium, mean that you have to move the fish around if you want to feed them (Rec tank) rather than battle them (Battle tank, obviously).

Catching the fish is the first step in creating your own living aquarium, however you might not want a tank full of Gummies, the games most common (and therefore annoying) fish. As such, the varying baits result in different fish being caught. Some baits catch the same fish whilst others may only catch one, they are shown here:

Mimi - Gummy, Niler, Nonky, Bon, Tarton, Bobo
Petite Fish - Bon, Kaji, Den, Hama Hama
Battan - Gummy, Niler, Bon
Carrot - Umadakara
Poison Apple - Mardan Garayan
Gooey Peach - Gummy, Bobo, Bon
Bomb Nuts - Piccoly, Gummy, Bon
Minion - Bon, Bobo, Den
Bananna - Piccoly, Niler
Evy - Bon, Tarton, Bobo
Potato Cake - Gummy, Tarton, Bon, Priscleen
Prickly - Bon
Heart-Throb Cherry - Gummy

Each fish you capture has varying attributes and each attribute effects the characteristics of the fish. The attribute definitions are:

Boost - How fast the fish can swim.
Endurance - How long the fish will last in a fight
Strength - How tough the fish will be in a fight.
Tenacity - How fiercily the fish will battle.
Stamina - How long the fish can take a beating
Gender, Length and Weight are all self explanatory.

Once you invent the aquarium, you can feed the fish you catch once they are placed in there. Feeding the fish with the following baits improves a particular attribute:

Battan - Tenacity
Carrot - Boost. Will also change fish from male to female or vice versa.
Evy - Stamina
Petite Fish - Endurance
Potato Cake - Stamina
Prickly - Tenacity
Mimi - Endurance
Minion - Boost

Breeding Fish:

Catching the fish you're looking for can be tricky at times, there are lots of fish to catch each with their own favourite bait, their own specific location and even their own time of day they'll be in the water. In order to be able to see all the fish in Dark Chronicle, you can breed the them together. Two fish, once placed in the breeding tank, will create one fish that will be the same breed as its parents if they were both the same breed, it will however, have better attributes. However, crossbreeding fish can lead to the creation of new fish, here is a selection of which fish are created from which crossbreeds:

Kaji + Nonky = Baku Baku
Baku Baku + Tarton = Bobo
Bobo + Hama Hama = Gummy
Gummy + Priscleen = Heela
Heela + Niler = Den
Den + Mardan Garayan = Negie
Negie + Umadakara = Piccoly
Piccoly + Priscleen = Gobbler
Gobbler + Umadakara = Hama Hama
Hama Hama + Umadakara = Tarton

Keep in mind that there are many other combinations which result in the same outcome as those listed above, experiment to find the fabled Baron Garayan fish.

So that concludes this walkthrough on some aspects of the game, I hoped it helped some!
