Weapons / Powerups guide

The Arena eternal isn't a nice place, and I'm sure if you keep getting fragged, it won't be any nicer. You have to know what to use, and when in order to make sure you stay on top of the score board. This guide will tell you what to use, what it does, and when.

Gauntlet: Sometimes prefered over the machine gun, in big battles, running in with one of these is deadly. Around 40 damage a hit, and constantly 'firing', if you can get close enough without taking damage, this will get you a lot of kills, plus you get to 'Humiliate' your opponents. Always a nice insult. Watch out though, in 1 on 1 confrontations, it is less effective, and those with shotguns are to be feared.

Machine Gun: A basic weapon, but pretty useless, unless you can keep on a target. Although slightly effective at range, shots flare more, so this is a close combat weapon. Shots are 1 - 2 damage each, so try and get something better as soon as possible.

Shotgun: Up close, 1-2 shots will kill anyone. As you get further away, this becomes more useless, but the spread of the shots means poor aim can be accounted for. Shots do more damage the closer you are, so run into battle fields of unsuspecting enemies, and get some easy frags.

Plasma Gun: Good aim is required for this weapon. This is like a more powerful Machine Gun, but the projectiles are not as instant to reach their target. At range, it doesn't spread as much either, but due to the slowness of the shots, this isn't really long range.

Grenade Launcher: If you can get in a good spot, launch a few of these in the directions of the enemies, and watch them explode. In groups of people also, this can be funny to let off a few shots. Rebound them off walls also to sneak in a shot, and leave a few in your path to kill any stalkers. Quite a useful weapon, but outranked by the Rocket Launcher. These Grenades don't have the range that rockets do, and is just a harder to use gun, and only works well in specific situations.

Rocket Launcher: Probably the favourite weapon in the game, the Rocket Launcher is very powerful, requires not much aim, is reasonably fast, and can allow you to rocket jump. First, the good thing with this gun is you can aim at the floor and get good splash damage. It is much easier to do this, as you're more likely to hit them this way. It also is good to jump higher, by shooting at the floor and jumping together, you get a lot more height, a nice way to get out of any confrontations, or jump to different areas of the map. The Rocket Launcher is reasonably fast, but the projectiles are slow. But, given that they have good splash damage and infinate range, launch a few into a battle zone, and watch the unsuspecting enemies get a dose of your rockets.

Lightning Gun: This is a tricky gun to use. You need to keep contact in order to make this effective. When you do keep on the target, this drains hitpoints in seconds. In straight corridors, when back pedaling from an enemy, fire this at them and they have no where to run. It also sounds cool :P

Rail Gun: Each shot can do around 70 - 80 damage, which is very powerful. This effectively is a sniper rifle, and if you have the right spot, you can pick off enemies from good distance. Watch out for machine gun fire, which can disturb your aim, and make sure you keep an eye for any rockets possibly heading your way. In close combat, this is very hard to use, considering how fast the game is, but if you can use it, you'll win games.

BFG 10K: Imagine a rapid fire rocket launcher. This is what you get. Clips are short, around 20 shots, but 2 - 3 will blast someone out of their boots, so you will get a few kills with this. This is a sought after weapon, so chances are, there will be someone with an eye on you when you get it. Because this is rapid fire and has less splash damage, try and aim for them instead of the floor, as you will most likely be more successful.

Team Arena Expansion:

Chain Gun: Imagine a Machine Gun times 6. This comes with more ammo, but uses it faster. This is devastating, but requires good aim, and can burn up the ammo quite quickly.

Nail Gun: This is similar to a Shotgun except with more range, and slower projectiles. These shots don't detieorate over distance, but travel slightly slower than a Shotgun. This is a powerful weapon to use, but the slowness in shots might prove costly, if you don't aim it carefully.

Prox Mine Launcher: Similar to a Grenade Launcher, this weapon fires mines that set off when enemies cross them. It can be used as a tactical defense to pathways, but the mines dissappear after time. Place them in your path so any enemies following you won't want to take your route. Explosions are slightly weaker than those of Grenades.

Powerups are a useful way to win a match. It can help improve on weaknesses, such as dodging shots, or poor aim. Picking up these powerups during a match can win you the game.

Quad Damage: Every shot you make does x4 damage for 30 seconds. When using this, it's best you go for rapid fire weapons, and spray them with shots, so it's more likely to hit. Machine Guns become like plasma guns, plasma guns become like BFGs, and BFGs become nukes. Be careful though, your health is still normal, so watch out for those who are getting you from behind, or those with rockets. Really, when using this gun, it is best that you just kill before you get killed. Offense is the key with this tool.

Regeneration: This is pretty simple. From 1 - 100 hp, your health rises by 15. To 100 - 200, it rises by 5. This will keep you in the battle long enough to get a few more kills, without meaning you need to run for health, or leave the battle premature of your killing spree. It is of no use without enemies to take use of it, since the health returns down to 100 after you have used your 30 seconds regeneration.

Haste: This is quite nifty for increasing the rate of fire and speed. It is great to fire rockets quicker, and be able to run and dodge faster. This can be useful if you can take along the right weapons. But speaking fairly, even if you just have a gauntlet, you can use the speed to run up and 'Humiliate' them before they can load a shot in you.

Invisibility: It just makes you invisible! The only technique you should consider is using a weapon which doesn't have a lot of muzzle fire, or that isn't as noticable. Plasma Guns have big bright shots, but shotgun rounds are a lot harder to see. That is the best way to take advantage of it.

Flight: The jump button acts as a rocket pack, lifting you into the air, hovering you above anything, to the roof of the map. The direction button moves you forward, left, right, back, and the mouse is a way of pointing towards where you want to go. Take a rocket launcher and fry the competition from above. Or, rest on a hard to reach location with a weapon and lots of ammo and take some people out. Just make sure you will land somewhere when the timer runs out, otherwise you will crater.

Radiation Suit: This suit safely lets you travel through harmful atmospheres, like lava or slime. It also protects you from splash damage from weapons, making rocket launchers useful and safe for rocket jumps, and also providing a reasonable shield from splash damage from enemies. But, it won't stop you getting killed from voids and fog of death.

Megahealth: Increases your health +100 points (up to 200). It is useful as an alternative to regeneration, and is a fast way to heal.

Teleport: Be careful with this. Remember the phrase out of the frying pan into the fire? If you are under serious fire, then by all means, use this for a quick escape. It takes you to spawn points, which could be near useful weapons.

Medikit: A health kit on the move, this can be useful. It heals you to 100 health from whatever health you are lower, and can keep you in the fight lower. An error people make, is they forget to use it in the heat of the battle. Try and use it whenever you can, as it can give you an edge over the competitor.

Team Arena Expansion:

Kamikaze: If you want to go out in a bang, use this weapon to create a giant explosion that will clear anyone near it out of sight. If you are short of health and about to die, let this off to get the last laugh on enemies. In situations of loads of people fighting in a scramble, let this off and rack up the kills.

Invulnerability: This powerup surronds you in an inpeneratrable sphere where you can fire out, but can't fire in. You are parylized in the sphere, as you can't walk, but can turn and pivot like in a turret. Use this wisely, as it can be a useful tool, but if you have poor weapons, it won't do you favours. Also, watch out for mines, as they can penetrate your shield.

Team Arena special power ups: These power ups stay with you throughout your time alive. For example, pick up a Doubler, and you will keep it until you get fragged. Choose wisely, as you can only pick up 1.

Ammo-Regen: This increases ammo slowly to a normal clip that you would get, and increases your rate of fire. This is useful if you like to hide and don't want to have to constantly get ammo, for example, for your rail gun. It is not the best power up, but has it's advantages.

Doubler: This is like Quad Damage, except double, not quad. (2x, not 4x). Having x2 damage is useful if you can get hold of the weapons, so stay near weapon spawn points all the time. Combining this with Quad Damage and you become a Quake 3 god.

Guard: This powerup takes your health and armour to 200 points. Whilst armour won't regenerate, your health will regenerate to 200 points. Also, this can be combined with Regeneration, but there is little point to work towards doing this. Although meant for defense, offensively, this does work well. The strength it provides you makes you survive to take down many opponents.

Scout: For those who like to attack quick, this is the best. An increased rate of fire and speed makes you zip across terrain and fire frantically. Combined well with almost any other powerup also, this is a great choice. Unfortunately, you can't wear any body armour.
