You first of all need to get used to the game, to do this you go on to the practice mode. Most people will not do this and later realise that its there. You will understand and know the rules of the game after the practice which is why its benficial to go on practice first.
After completing the practice mode you should really go on franchise mode which is an all new game mode to NHL. This is where you make up a team and guide them through amtuer stages to join the NHL itself! You can design players, give them nicknames which the commentater calls them. There are eight stages of the franchise mode which are all challenging. There are several teams that you must beat on each stage while completing challenges against the teams to gain experiance. In my view franchise is the most exciting and fun part of NHL 2003 and is fun to make a team and watch them rise from amatuer to professionals by pressing buttons on a controler! If you ever get stuck on the challenges don't bother doing them just make sure you beat the team. If you need experience do challenges and if you need equipment beat stage champians which are unlocked by beating all other teams in the stage.
Season mode is also fun to play if you have many mates around. You can load up and use your completed franchise team data against your mates data or just use some ass kickin' NHL bad ass teams. If you wan to make up more players you can do it in season mode dead easily and the players are not bad at all. If you want a player that you've always wanted on your team just use trade before the deadline or turn the trade deadline off and trade whenever you want!
My final paragraph about this game is the extra modes, clothes and heads you can win! By completing training, franchise mode(all goals complete) and season mode you win a great deal of cool games, alien heads, new stadiums and clothes. Altogether I highly rate this game and think it as a king sports game.
