Retro Game Walkthroughs for Wave Race: Blue Storm (Gamecube)
Submitted By: ˝pint
Wave Race can be a really annoying game sometimes. Whether its
just a level you hate, causing you to repeatedly fail a
championship, or just the fact that you always miss certain
buoys. Hopefully, this walkthrough will teach you the ifs, the
buts the do's and the don'ts of the game.

Buoys

Annoyingly infamous for their pronunciation 'boo-eys', buoys are
the essence of the game. Slalom around these to increase your
boost meter - one buoy = one notch. Fill it up and you've got a
boost.

In the easier championships, the buoys are simple to follow, and
often consist of an easy path around a level. There is always a
stretch of buoys in a straight line which you have to slalom
around, and for those who are fairly new to the game, it can be
really hard. The trick here is to USE THE JOYSTICK LIGHTLY. If
you push the joystick hard in any direction, you'll start to turn
then continue to turn sharply after you've let go. The trick is
to only push the joystick lightly to gently slalom around the
buoys.

Pre-empting your turn.

The key to success in Wave Race is to pre-empt your next turn.
The JetSki's are slow to react compared with normal racing games,
and if you don't act slightly early, you'll not turn until after
you've passed the buoy. The trick is to turn lightly, just
before you reach the buoy and you should glide right past it in a
skillful curve. When slaloming, pre-empting your turn is the key
to success - if you leave it too late you have to slow down and
pull a sharp turn to save yourself, reducing your speed, letting
the opponents overtake you and possibly making you miss the buoy
- and lose all of your boost meter.

Boosting

Only boost when you have the opportunity which won't mess up your
run. If there is a succession of buoys ahead, don't boost
because boosting makes it near-impossible to turn and you won't
be able to navigate the buoys. Only boost if you have a long
straight ahead and you don't need to turn soon. If you do turn
while boosting, you can't stop turning without actually starting
to turn in the opposite direction, so my advice is to just line
it up alright and do a straight on boost. Once it's stopped you
should then turn because it is far more easier to control.

The bad thing about boosting is that your boost meter goes back
to zero, which means you slow down. You gain a small amount of
speed the fuller your boost meter is, so if it is completely
empty you end up going about 20kph slower than if its full. The
computer opponents NEVER boost, which means they'd have the
advantage over you if their gauge was full and yours was empty.
Missing buoys also takes your boost meter back to zero, which
isn't a good thing.

I almost always use a boost just before the finish line. You
never know, if you're neck to neck with somebody else, it could
provide the advantage.

Turning

Turning can be very tricky in Wave Race. There are essentially
three types of turns - wide gentle turns, middle-ish tighter
turns and very sharp turns. In Wave Race, you should never use
the sharpest turns because they're much too sharp. The only
instance in which you should use them if you need to turn a
complete 180 degrees, or if you just quickly tap the sharp turn
to turn slightly, but quickly. To do a sharp turn, you pull
diagonally on the joystick down/right or left. The light turns
are just turning left or right with the joystick, the medium
turns are using the lean buttons to turn - the R and L triggers.
These turns are useful if the standard turn isn't enough -
navigating between boulders perhaps, or if there is a fairly
sharp turn.

Fighting

While there aren't any proper buttons to do so, knocking
opposition riders off their Jet Ski's, or just knocking them off
course is almost essential to success. If you get close to an
opposition rider, your character will automatically take a swipe
at them. This can provide useful if you're racing parallel to
each other and there is a buoy near - knocking them out of the
way at the last minute may make them miss it. Also, if you're
racing in a particularly stormy course or one with high waves,
you can either land on an opponent after a jump, or come down on
top of them off a wave to make them fall off. This is a quick
and cheap way to get an advantage, and as you definitely know,
you lose a LOT of time by falling off.

Missing Buoys

You can miss five buoys in Wave Race and then you retire.
Missing buoys powers down your boost, but in many circumstances
missing buoys is essential. If the buoys trace a path in a
circle, yet you're able to just cut across it at a tangent; as
long as you don't retire, just ride straight past. Remember, you
only miss buoys facing the opposite direction from you are. If
the row of buoys is on YOUR right, you only 'miss' the red buoys
which you have to pass on the opposite side. If you can boost
before you cut across this arc, it can provide a very big
advantage.

And example:

On Aspen Lake at the very start, the buoys go between rocks
around in a semi-circle. You can just cut to the left and if you
got a good start, boost. You'll become very far ahead of
everybody else who has to trouble with navigating the buoys. It
works, and is very handy.

Hopefully with these tips, and with practice, those seemingly
unreachable levels will become easy to complete. Technically, if
you do learn all of these techniques, you could become a Time
Trial master and achieve some record times.

And remember that your craft is affected by everything - the
swell, opposition and your controller. Leaning, attacking and
being gentle on the controller are essential, and unless you
master those techniques you'll get into a lot of trouble on the
later stages.

TIPS====================

At the starting line, when the light goes green, press A to get a boost start.
To get a boost, u must weave in and out of 5 bouys in a row. If u miss 1 bouy, u have 2 start all over. Pass on the left of yellow bouys, and on the right of red 1s.
IF YOU MISS 5 BOUYS U R DISQUALIFIED FROM THE RACE!!!!!
If a few people r in front of u, u have a boost, and the finish line is ahead, boost to overtake them and win.
Pay attention to the tide, courses change with the tide.
Ramps can b a good laugh, but they slow u down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
=========================
===================POINTS
The amount of point u recieve depends on what place u come in a race. Sometimes in order to qualify 4 the next race, u must get a certain # of points. The points r as follows:
1st - 12 pts
2nd - 10 pts
3rd - 8 pts
4th - 6 pts
5th - 4 pts
6th - 3 pts
7th - 2 pts
8th - 1 pt
In Stunt Mode u get points 4 going thru the rings, and 4 stunts.
Blue Ring = 50 pts
Green Ring = 100 pts
Red Ring = 150 pts
Turbo Ring = 25 pts
U get 50 bonus points if u go thru more than 1 ring in a row.
If u miss a ring, u start the bonus all over again.
U also get 5 points 4 every 10th of a second left on your timer when u go thru a checkpoint.
EXHIBITION MODE||
=================
DOLPHIN PARK *
U only have 1 track 2 deal with, and its as simple as a 2 piece jigsaw puzzle. The other racers r easy 2 beat. Just don't run onto dry ground, or hit a pier.
WATCH OUT 4: those adorable dolfins or turtles (don't worry they're no threat).
WHERE TO BOOST: anywhere.
SHORTCUTS: there r no shortcuts.
If you come 1st, u unlock Normal Mode!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NORMAL MODE||
=============
In this mode u must complete 5 courses. Difficuly is rated in *'s

LOST TEMPLE LAGOON *
Quite a simple track. The bouys are easily placed, and there r no tight corners.
WATCH OUT 4: the last corner, the bouy after it can b hard 2 get 2.
WHERE 2 BOOST: anywhere, except b4 the last corner.
SHORTCUTS: there r no shortcuts.

SOUTHERN ISLAND **
There r no difficult turns, but there r plenty of obstacles. The bouys are easily placed.
WATCH OUT 4: the lowering tide, as the laps progress the level becomes harder. Use the ramp 2 jump the boat, and look out 4 rocks.
WHERE 2 BOOST: anywhere.
SHORTCUTS: On the 1st lap, 2 the left of starting line there is a gate, smash thru it. Use ramp 2 jump pier.
On the 2nd lap, there as a pipe that u can go thru. U can now also go underneath the pier.

ASPEN LAKE **
In normal weather conditions, there r barely any waves at all. There r some obstacles like rocks. The bouys r placed in harder areas now.
WATCH OUT 4: Rocks and wooden poles.
WHERE 2 BOOST: anywhere except when going thru the rocks.
SHORTCUTS: Half way thru course there is a ramp. There is also a small gap that goes underwater to the left. Use the ramp and use the LONG DIVE technique to go thru the shortcut.

OCEAN CITY HARBOUR ***
This track is pretty sneaky. The bouys are placed in difficult spots, so some sharp turns are needed. There are also some ruff waves.
WATCH OUT 4: crates, boats, the tide, falling crates, moving ships.
WHERE 2 BOOST: any straight without bouys.
SHORTCUTS: there aren't any.

ARCTIC BAY ***
The toughest track in NORMAL MODE. There is lots of ice everywhere, and the sea isn't frendly either.
WATCH OUT 4: falling chunks of ice (which cause massive waves).
WHERE 2 BOOST: at the end of the lap, and the straight near the boat.
SHORTCUTS: towards the end of the lap, there is a ramp, that jumps thru a hole in the ice, use a turbo b4 u hit the ramp.

IF U PLACED IN THE TOP 3, U HAVE UNLOCKED ADVANCED MODE!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ADVANCED MODE||
===============
6 courses this time, the tracks r harder, and the other racers r prepared.
LOST TEMPLE LAGOON **
Much more tuffer than the 1 in NORMAL MODE. It's the easiest of this lot though. The bouys do no justice.
WATCH OUT 4: land, rocks, and the shortcut.
WHERE 2 BOOST: on the straights.
SHORTCUTS: After the 2nd straight, the is a wall with cracks in it, bust thru it and slalom thru the walls.
SOUTHERN ISLAND ***
It's the same route as b4, but the bouys r placed in harder areas.
WATCH OUT 4: the tide, the boat.
WHERE TO BOOST: the final straight.
SHORTCUTS: same as b4, but u might miss a few bouys.
ASPEN LAKE ****
Again it's the same route, but the bouys r in different spots.
WATCH OUT 4: rocks, wooden posts
WHERE 2 BOOST: final straight.
SHORTCUTS: same as b4.
OCEAN CITY HARBOUR ***
Just a tiny bit different from the NORMAL MODE 1. U go thru the tunnel this time, and the bouys are hard 2 reach in places.
WATCH OUT 4: the outgoing tide, boats, crates.
WHERE 2 BOOST: Boost on both the straights.
SHORTCUTS: on the 2nd lap, a ramp appears from under the water, use a boost, hit it, and jump over the barriers. This shortcut will make u gain a few places.
ARCTIC BAY ***
The same route, but the other way round. Nothing's changed, except those ****ing bouys...
WATCH OUT 4: the falling chunks of ice, and ice patches.
WHERE 2 BOOST: Anywhere.
SHORTCUTS: same place as b4, but the other way round.
LA RAZZA CANAL *****
Welcome to hell. It may look nice, but this place is as evil as those people from Sega...
WATCH OUT 4: crates, gondolas, walls, thin canals.
WHERE 2 BOOST: anywhere without bouys.
SHORTCUTS: there r a few corners with plazas next 2 them, drive across these, also when u reach the fountain, go down the left side, and head 4 a thin canal.
IF U HAVE PLACED IN THE TOP 3, YOU HAVE UNLOCKED THE EXPERT MODE!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXPERT MODE||
=============
The final challenge in the game. The other racers are slyer a than fox that has been watching Inspector Morse a bit 2 much.

LOST TEMPLE LAGOON ***
Even though you're on expert mode, u should easily come 1st on this track.
The bouys aren't that hard 2 get.
WATCH OUT 4: pieces of land, ruff waves.
WHERE 2 BOOST: almost anywhere.
SHORTCUTS: sorry mate, there aren't any.

SOUTHERN ISLAND ***
Just a little bit different 2 the previous versions of this. The bouys r very hard 2 get.
WATCH OUT 4: wooden posts, the tide, rocks.
WHERE 2 BOOST: the final straight.
SHORTCUTS: only the pipe this time, but u miss a few bouys.

ASPEN LAKE *****
Nintendo can b evil. Just look at this track, it the same as b4, but its the other way round, and you've gotta dodge rocks 2 get round the bouys.
WATCH OUT 4: rocks, wooden bouys. It's actually easier to play this course in bad weather. The tide covers some of the rocks.
WHERE 2 BOOST: After the shortcut.
SHORTCUTS: same as b4.

OCEAN CITY HARBOUR *****
The simple oval shape, turned into 1 of the hardest races in history. The bouys are placed on either side of the track, so you've gotta zig-zag thru 'em.
WATCH OUT 4: falling crates, the ramps.
WHERE 2 BOOST: On the 1st straight.
SHORTCUTS: On the left of the 1st straight is a metal grate, go thru it. Only use this shortcut once because u miss a lot of bouys.

ARCTIC BAY *****
The only difference is that this time u go thru the ice cave. The bouys are hard to get. Good luck.
WATCH OUT 4: the ice when u come out of the cave, walls.
WHERE 2 BOOST: on the 1st straight.
SHORTCUTS: in the cave, stay as right as you can, and hit a ramp, use a LONG DIVE to go thru an underwater hole.

LA RAZZA CANAL ******
The hardest track in the game. The sharpest corner in the game. The biggest headache you're ever gonna get. The best shortcut in shortcutting history... ;)
WATCH OUT 4: gondolas, walls, very sharp corners.
WHERE 2 BOOST: final straight.
SHORTCUTS: plazas, the thin canal, and where the track goes wide, there r 2 crates on the wall, smash thru them, and jump over the hardest corner. Very handy.

STRONGWATER KEEP *****
This isn't 2 tough. The real challenge is trying 2 go round every bouy.
WATCH OUT 4: walls, land, rocks.
WHERE 2 BOOST: final straight
SHORTCUTS: use a boost to jump over a castle wall. A gate opens on the second lap, go thru it. In castle, go thru a small canal and thru a crumbling wall. This makes u miss a few bouys though.

CONGRATS!!! NOW U HAVE COMPLETED THE GAME -> YOU HAVE UNLOCKED ALL WEATHER EFFECTS ON EVERY COURSE!!!!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At Options Menu, hold Start/Pause, X and Z to open cheat menu.
Enter DLPHNMOD to ride a dolfin.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On free roam, DOLPHIN PARK, there is an island in the distance. Drive towards it and use your boost when the 'COURSE OUT' timer begins. U should find a small area with large waves surrounded by red bouys. Here u can practise doing tricks with ease.
