INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my Harvest Moon AWL walkthrough guide. In this guide I will explain to you how the game works and what you need to do to be successful. I will also explain in detail every aspect of the game such as crop growing ect. So without any further ado, let’s get cracking you ‘Farmer Johns’.

TIME SCALE

In AWL life, time runs at about one game minute to one real second, so one gaming hour would equal around about 24 minutes. You will have to play 30 gaming years, which is a monstrous amount considering you’ll have to play this every day to keep an eye on crops and so on. Time will only pause whilst you select options from menus, but everything else you do time will run.

BUYING/SELLING

Aside from Van, you can also sell things through Takakura. You can sell him eggs, dairy products and S-grade crops. If you sell things with Takakura, you will raise your Linkstar, which I will explain later. To sell things through him, go to your Cold storage building and open the cooler, then put the items you want to sell inside and Takakura should visit during the morning to pick up your goods and come back later with your money. Use the Ledger to obtain your cash and buy livestock, tools and buildings with your money.

YOUR ANIMALS

You firstly get to choose a dog. The breed you choose doesn’t really affect your game, so don’t worry about that. The interaction with the dog is minimal, but your main priority is to feed it. Feed it things like herbs, and when you feed him you will be able to train him to chase people off your farm.

Takakura will also give you a horse. You can use your horse to travel around the town much quicker, and you’ll need to whistle him to call him. Your horse will need much more attention than your dog, such as feeding it, brushing it and talking to it.

TV/WEATHER

There are only four channels to choose from, and the only useful one is the weather channel. Always listen to the middle-aged weatherman, as he is usually correct, as the other guy is very random. You can also note down changes you see in the sky for example to predict the weather yourself. Apart from the weather, nothing else is useful on the TV.

SOCIAL ACTIVITY

To succeed in AWL you will need to make friends within the town. To make friends you will need to talk to people and offer them gifts. To offer them gifts, take an object from your rucksack and show it to them. If they reject it, show it to them again. If they say they don’t like it, then try another gift. Some people will only accept gifts at a certain time; Daryl won’t accept gifts when he’s in his lab and there are others. Most people will only accept one gift per day, but there are exceptions; Takakura will accept two a day and there are others.

Once you have made a friend, a dialogue box will appear when you attempt to talk to them. The golden rule in AWL is always be nice, even if you have to lie. If you don’t know what to reply to someone, use your common sense and always be positive. Once you have made friends they will return your gratitude by giving you gifts such as farming equipment, so it is essential you make a number of friends within your town if you want to succeed.

FARMING

You have three fields in which you can plant seeds; one next to your house, one next to the chicken coop and one near the locked shed. In that order, they have Poor, Better, Best quality soil and are Small, Medium, Large in that order. You should use poor quality soil for trees, and better quality soil for crops.

You can buy seeds from anyone in Vesta Farm whose is inside; Vesta, Marlin or Celia. If you talk to Vesta outside, she will tell you the best plants to grow for the current season. To plant crops, you need to use the Hoe on your fields. One square of dirt can hold one seed, and you should set out your field like Vesta, tiled in a checkerboard style. Once you have set out your field, you can plant a seed in a tilled square. You will need to use fertiliser on a crop to get a better quality plant. To get your plants up to A-rank you will need to use four fertilisers on a single crop and thirty on a tree. To get an S-rank crop you need to use eight.

Plants grow in several stages. First they are seeds, then sprouts, then small plants, then budding, then flowering and finally ripe. You can only pick a plant once it’s ripe and only harvest it once before it dies. When a plant dies, it will remain in the soil for a month before it disappears, although you can use a sickle to remove it.

Trees take a long time to grow, but they can produce 24 fruits, which is well worth the wait. Never plant anything eight spaces around the tree as it will not grow properly as trees take up a lot of resources needed to grow. Trees only produce in their season, just like plants, but they can live through all seasons. Trees do eventually die, but they can live through more than three years.

SEEDS

Seed | Season | Buy | Sell
----------------------------------------------------------
Tomato Spring-Autumn 30G 35G
Watermelon Spring-Summer 60G 75G
Melons Summer-Autumn 50G 70G
Strawberries Autumn-Spring 30G 35G
Turnips Summer-Winter 20G 25G
Potatoes Winter-Spring 40G 60G
Carrots Winter 30G 45G
Sweet Potatoes Autumn 40G 60G

Tree | Season | Buy | Sell
----------------------------------------------------------
Peaches Summer Harvest 1,120G 40G
Oranges Summer Harvest 820G 30G
Grapes Autumn Harvest 900G 35G
Bananas Summer Harvest 1,500G 35G
Apples Autumn Harvest 820G 25G

For the best results I would recommend:

Spring – Watermelon
Summer – Melon
Autumn – Sweet Potato
Winter – Potato

Make sure you plant a little of everything though, as you need to use some for raw materials and so on.

What is a very useful thing to have in AWL is the Seed Maker, which turns any fruit or vegetable into two seeds, meaning you will never have to buy seeds again, and massive profits can be made from it. A good way to get it is to make very good friends from Daryl, and he will give it to you for free. Alternatively you can buy it, but I would try to get it from Daryl.

RANCHING

Ranching is the easiest way to gain good profits in the first part of the game. Milk will sell for a lot of gold. For the first year, you should concern yourself with your cows. The different types are as follows:

Normal: A normal dairy cow, which you will start off with.

Prices:
Male: 3,000 G
Female: 4,000 G
Seeding: 2,500 G

Brown: A Brown cow, basically the same as the normal.

Prices:
Male: 4,000 G
Female: 5,000 G
Seeding: 3,500 G

Marble: Again, similar to the Brown cow breed.

Prices:
Male: 4,000 G
Female: 5,000 G
Seeding: 3,500 G

Star: This is the best breed of cow. They produce the best and most expensive milk, but don’t produce as many bottles of it.

Prices:
Male: 6,000 G
Female: 7,000 G
Seeding: 5,500 G

Cows need plenty of TLC if you want them to produce high quality milk and profits. Keep them inside when it’s raining or snowing, and let them out when it is fine. Talk to them and nuzzle them everyday, and use the brush on them to keep them clean. There are three grades of milk, and the way you treat your cows determines the quality of milk they produce.

Never wake the cows, as they will get angry. Cows need their sleep, but don’t worry if you accidentally wake them, just make sure it doesn’t happen too often. You will also need to wash them occasionally. To do this, use the brush you have and use the water trough outside to clean the cow. Also make sure you feed your cows twice a day if they stay inside the barn. Their feed trough holds two pieces of fodder, so make sure you have some to spare. To obtain fodder, use your sickle on the pasture in the grass. The fodder is stored in the fodder bin at the front of the barn. The golden rule is more love = better milk.

Milk will be your main priority for your first stages of AWL.

Prices:
Normal:
B Quality: 75 G
A Quality: 115 G
S Quality: 150 G

Brown:
B Quality: 115 G
A Quality: 175 G
S Quality: 225 G

Marble:
B Quality: 115 G
A Quality: 175 G
S Quality: 225 G

Star:
B Quality: 270 G
A Quality: 405 G
S Quality: 540 G

The Star cows produce by far the best quality milk, but they are the most expensive to purchase.

You can milk your cows twice a day. To milk a cow, just approach it and select the ‘milk’ option and the bottles will stack to the right and behind you. During Spring and Summer you can get about 3-4 bottles per milking, but that will go down to 2 after a while. In Spring, you can make up to 650G of milk in one day from one cow. Once the quality of the milk rises, you will get even more.

You will find that after a cow gives birth it won’t be able to milk until 35-40 days afterward. To solve this, seed the cow by visiting Takakura’s ledger and buying an MP for ‘Other Bull’ and selecting the name of your cow. Your cow will be pregnant for about 30 days.

Once you’ve seeded your cow, you’ll need to wait to the end of pregnancy before you can get anymore milk. About 5-10 days before the birth you will have to build an Isolation fence for the mother. The Sprites will help you out here, and you need to make sure you feed the cow indoors by hand. Once the calf is born, you need to name it and the Sprites will guide it to the Calf hutch. The mother will now produce milk for the calf, and make sure you interact with your calf everyday to make sure it likes you. Eventually the mother will start producing ordinary milk, and the calf will need to drink that. After a while the calf will then start to eat fodder, and it will be almost ready to leave the hutch.

If you buy your own bull to seed your cow, read the following:

If the cow and bull are the same type, the calf will be the same type. However, if the cow and bull are different types, the calf will usually become the type that its mother is; not always, but very often.

If you buy new cows, they will need to be impregnated before they can produce milk. Before you can impregnate them, you will need to wait for it to grow for a month. This is also the case for a bull before it can mate.

OTHER ANIMALS

Aside from your cows, there are a number of other animals that can give you produce and money.

CHICKEN

You will also keep chickens at your farm. Your coop will hold a maximum of 8 fowl, and your seed will run out depending on the number of birds eating each day, so unless you like buying seed in a bulk you should have about half the occupancy for the first year. You should buy a male and a female to start off your flock, but only have one rooster in the coop.

Getting an egg fertilised is entirely random. Remember also to pick your fowl twice a day and interact with them to make them like you more.

The Eggs:
Unfertilized: 40 G
Fertilized: 50 G
Golden: 300 G

A Golden egg is very rare. When you sell them to Van, you can reject his prices and ask for a bit more, although you shouldn’t push your luck too much. Chickens will sell for 450 G.

DUCK

Another animal you can keep at your farm are ducks. To get ducks, you must buy the Pond in the first chapter of your game, and you will get two if you have 6 or less chickens. If you reject the offer, you will never be able to get ducks again, likewise if you sell your ducks. Ducks are useful for producing duck eggs instead of chicken eggs. Ducks sell for 500 G.

FISHING

To fish, buy the Fishing Pole from Van, and find a good watery place; the river’s end and the base of the Waterfall are very good spots to fish. Take out your fishing pole and cast into the water. Now, sit and wait. If you don't get a bite within 15-20 seconds or so, try again. If you feel a fish nibbling on your hook, don’t reel it in yet, wait until the fish splashes and then try. This means the fish has bitten hard on the hook and you’ll have a better chance of catching it. It is very difficult to tell when you should reel in, but it comes with practice. If you reel in and nothing is on the end, simply try again.

Fishing, although very hard work, is well worth it in the end, as some fish can be sold for very high prices, and Daryl is also keen on fish so try to sell to him often.

MINING

Go up to the Archaeology Dig any time between 9:30am and 5pm and go inside. If Carter isn't inside, then wait a little while and come back. Sometimes he isn’t there, so you’ll just have to guess when he’s in. If he is inside, then talk to him and tell him you want to help out. He'll give you a spade and ask if you want instructions.

Once you have the Spade, begin digging up the Light Brown Squares in the centre of the Dig. You can find many things in the Dig, from Bones to Artefacts, and even some Special Artefacts that will interest Carter.

Don't quit when you turn over all the squares, keep digging until you find something. Go back to some squares that didn't have anything the first time and keep digging in them as you might find something. When you're ready to go, just talk to Carter again or head for the exit. Carter closes up the shop at 5pm sharp so make sure you come early enough. Carter doesn't want you sneaking any artefacts out in your Rucksack, so you have to check it at the door. Don't worry though, as he'll let you keep most of the things you find.

THE MARKET

Any time you want you can set up your own shop. Go to the spot of land next to the Blue Bar that's right next to where Van sets up his shop. You should find a spot that lets you set up a shop. You'll then have to wait until people pass by to sell them items. They'll come up to your shop and wait for you to talk to them so talk to them and they'll tell you what item you want. You can either pick to sell it, discount it, or not sell it. Discounting an item helps to raise their Friendship level with you. You can sell everything in your inventory. So that means that someone might want to buy things such as your farm tools for example, and you may not be able to get them back, so be careful what you actually sell.

The best time to have your stand set up at is between 7:00 - 8:00. Occasionally, you should leave it open till 9;00am, as that is when nearly everyone is out of their houses. You can get people's attention by whistling when they walk past.

Another time to sell at your stand is when the residents return home. This is usually from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Sometimes there will be people walking past as late as 6.30pm, so I would recommend you stay at your stand until that time. During your first year, Hugh may come up to your stand to look at your items. However, if you try and sell him anything, even at the lower price, he won't be able to buy it because he doesn't have any money.

INFORMATION ABOUT VAN

Van is your best friend throughout the game. You can sell him almost anything. He comes to town at least twice a month, though he usually comes more often so check the calendar in your house for more information.

You can try to barter with him for most items, but mostly with the high
quality ones, and some types of seeds. To barter, just refuse the price
he gives you. If he will go up, he'll tell you. You can sometimes refuse
the second price and get an even higher price, but not too often. As he gets older, he gets more stubborn and more difficult to barter with.

SLEEP

Sleep is an important part of AWL. The amount of sleep your character gets will determine his health and happiness and how well he works throughout the day. There are three types of dream you can have whilst sleeping:

A Bad dream will see your character have a confused expression on a purple face.
This dream occurs if you are always tired or hungry. If you see this, you need to feed him herbs and make him go to sleep earlier the next day. Also make sure you aren’t making him do too much work. If he's falling over and having stars circle his head quite often, that's a sign of too much activity and not enough food and rest.

A Medium dream looks like a lot o bubbles. This means your character is feeling alright, but needs some more food and more rest to feel better. You should also lay off the work a little to let him fully recover.

A Good dream will see your character with a happy smile surrounded by fruit and vegetables. This means he’s in perfect condition, and you are doing a good job of looking after him.

RECIPES

To become a good chef, able to cook anything and everything, you need to practise a lot. You have to cook a certain amount of meals before you can cook another amount. About 25-30 of each kind is needed before a new kind opens up. 25-30 Soups and 25-30 Salads will give you a new recipe type. Each recipe requires up to three ingredients. The ingredients must be used in a specific order. There are hundreds of different types of meal to cook, but it all comes with practise.

MARRIAGE/DATING

There are three girls to choose from; Nami, Celia and Muffy. You will have to choose a wife within the game. Each girl has their own likes and dislikes, and to propose you’ll need to give them gifts until their heart rating is very high and they like you.

Choosing a wife is a major aspect of the game. Choosing a certain girl will affect the children you have and also the events that happen during the day. To get the girl you want, you will need to complete a series of challenges were they gain a heart and like you a little more.

And there you have it. AWL tore apart and all its basics explained to you in detail to try and make your farming life a little easier. AWL is a mammoth of a chore at times, but stick with it and you’ll be satisfied with the rewards. Thankyou for reading.

Harvest Moons: It's a Wonderful Life - general walkthrough....

ANIMALS;

The key to early success in your farm. I can't count the number of times my cows have saved my bacon. Money wise obviously.

GENERAL;
- When possible, keep them outside
- When inside, keep them fed
- Always be nice and caring - check on them a lot

COWS:

You get one at the start, and you need more really. Milk-able twice a day, morning and evening (or indeed midnight and mid-day, 11/12 hours apart anytime really). Be nice to it to get milk - neglect it and it'll get annoyed.

The cows give three types of milk, B, A and S, in cheap to expensive order. Most of time you'll get A through normal care. To get S milk, buy 'Good fodder' and brush the cow a lot and you might get some valuable milk! Inside they need food TWICE a day (hence 2 spaces in their feed troughs), but outside they can eat what they want/need.
When you have a male cow and a female cow, you might somehow get a baby cow. This both a good and bad thing. Bad because it interrupts milk, and cows 'need' to give birth every 40 days to 'keep the milk going', good because you get more cows!

Miracle Potion can also make a cow pregnant, in some Christ-like event! Once the cow reaches late pregnancy, it goes into the little barred area at the back of the tool shed - then the calf is born and is fed on 'Mama's Milk'. Feed the calf this, and then the mother might start making normal milk - continued to feed some to the calf to get it strong. Fodder after that - a lot of care and attention needs to be payed to your calf. Then it grows into a big strong bull/heffer, and the mother can produce milk for another 40 days!

There are 4 types of cow, with the females costing 1000G more than the male breed equivalent, for obvious reasons. The breeds are Normal, Brown, Marble and Star cows. The value of milk rises accordingly. You can inter-breed them for odd results too.....

Milk Prices - Star Cow Marble Cow Brown Cow Normal Cow

B Milk 270 115 115 75
A Milk 405 175 175 115
S Milk 540 225 225 150

As you can see, the prices vary hugely between normal and Star! This is the same for cheese etc when you get a Food Processor plant (30,000G). Also available is the Milking Plant (60,000G) which costs the earth but us time saving... up to you.

SHEEP;

....are not as good, simple. They take room in the barn (valuable cow space) and produce wool only once a season! Feed ONCE a day, and produce Golden Wool if they like you enough. Wash/brush them (the washing trough, left of the barn outside) to make them happier as well. B, A and S wool rises in value accordingly, with about 600G from S wool - but once a season, this is not a great investment compare to other animals....

CHICKENS;

You need lots for profit, but they are funny. Again, be nice and you get 1/2 eggs a day, sellable of course. You need a rooster and a hen for a fertilised egg, which once on the incubator will turn into a new chicken soon enough! You need to buy Bird Feed for the chickens and pop it on the central rectangle - it'll diminish as it gets eaten. Beware, as you hold and cuddle the chickens, if you show them to the others, they get annoyed. Not sure why..

Pop them outside it it's nice - not in the grass, they'll get lost. If it rains, don't bother, and it can take ages to take them all outside, but they do like it.

Incubated eggs take about 5 days to hatch and another 5 to develop from chick to chicken. Again, randomly male/female - you can also sell them for a tidy price - just hope they're not for food! They cost 900 for both sexes, and produce Normal/Fertilised and Golden eggs, 40G, 50G and 300G accordingly! Golden egss are from very happy chickens though.....

DUCKS;
Now into the realm of the unknown quantities. You need a pond (2,500G) from the First Chapter in your field. You also need less than six chickens, not sure why... Your wife will wake up (you need a wife, seriously..) and find some ducks in the pond. Keep them, and they make eggs like Chickens. Incubate for more ducks - but don't sell all of them, as they DO NOT come back. You can sell a duck for 500G...

GOATS;
Similar to cows. Feed/care same way, but no pregnancies. However, once they stop giving milk, they are impossible to be rid of, so only get if you really want them. You can make Goats cheese and butter etc, but Cow milk is generally more valuable. You can just starve the poor things, but the morals in the game might not let you stray that far without some remorse!

FISH;
Catch some (see Fishing) - best place is the waterfall or the very mouth of the river. You can use the fish for some advanced cookery, or sell the Sharsharks for a tidy sum.

Fish selling prices.........

PETS;
Dog, cats, stupid chawawawawawaaaas, and 'my lovely horse'.

HORSE;
Extremely useful for saving time. Brush, care for normally etc. Double tap R to whistle and make it run over to you. Takakura brings it to you in the First chapter, nice and free.

DOG;
Doesnothing, get at start. Boring little beggar. You can put food in the dogbowl.

CATS/Chihuahua - Make friends with Romana and you might get one of her cats. Be nice to Carter the archeologist, help his digs and find some pricey stuff and you might get his near invisible dog.

GIRLS;

The good bit of the game... hehe.

They like various things depending on their personality...

CELIA;

Works at the farm nearby - simple and down to earth. Your kid will be the same really. She likes flowers, veg, eggs, crystals/ore, shiny ore etc.

MUFFY;

The red dress lady. Flirtatious and a 'schnurgen!' style babe. Well, compared to the other two..... Anyway, your kid will be the same, obviously. Well, outgoing at least. She likes flowers, ore/crystals, shiny couns and sweets!

NAMI;

Quiet and withdrawn, but she will warm to you. Yourkid will be quiet but loving. She likes clay statues, fossils, curry and blue trick flowers.

CROPS;
Plantation farm sells these.......to a rival farm. Hmm. Anyway, crops are very time consuming. They need watering a lot in summer/late spring/early autumn, and this takes a while. However, they are very useful for your own consumption and recipies!

-------- SEASON/CROP PLANTING --------

Spring - Tomato, Watermelon, Strawberry, Potato
Summer - Tomato, Watermelon, Turnip, Melon, Sweet Potato
'Fall' - Tomato, Watermelon, Strawberry, Turnip, Melon, Carrot
Winter - Strawberry, Turnip, Potato, Carrot

TREES;

Expensive + useful. You don't need to water it after it's been planted - they never die or wilt, but you can hoe them down. You can plant anytime, but only harvest at certain points.

HARVEST:

Spring - Peaches
Summer - Oranges, Bananas
Fall - Grapes, Apples
Winter -

GENERAL;
- Chop a lot of grass, take out 99 fodder, and make 990G by selling it all to Van - time consuming but easy money. Use the Light Sickle to save energy (and you need lots of fodder for the winter as well)
- Use a seed maker, pop in some seeds and then sell the seeds - a lot more value.
- Experiment - Try mixing lots of things with Tartan/Seed makers etc. You can mix wild flowers etc. Also, cook! Cooking is a good gift for people, and learn it fast.
- Wife = get one quick - first chapter or so.
These are obviously general tips, but they should be useful!
Thanks for reading!
