Retro Game Walkthroughs for Athens 2004 (PlayStation 2)

With the game being very much like one of Nintys mario partys with mini games you would not think this game suitable for a walkthrough, but stuff that im doing one.

If you scroll down you will see the athletic events, just scroll up and down and look at the events that you need a hand on. As you will know the game already does have an explanation of each event but i found this to be slightly missleading on a few. Plus they dont give you very good advice on how to win!

Events:

100/200 metre: First off you may be an old veteran in the old bashing button games (I know i am) you may think ah this will be easy will get sub 9.00. But you wont you have to practice your start. At the start when you are ready to run, hold the L1 but you may find it slightly more to your advantage like i do if you use the R1 button instead as it is nearer the O and X buttons. If you dont get a good start you can still win but you wont get anything near the WR, to get this you must release the R1 or L1 button the minisecond you see GO. But you may find this slightly hard, so yes you can practice and you will improve but i found a good method was to count how long there was between set and go. So the next time you race you see go you count and you have a ough idea when you should let go of the L1 or R1 button, ok yes at first you will probably have a few false starts but it starts to improve and you start to run 9.60.

400 metre: Again a good start is essential but not as much, i find 40 seconds of hard button bashing very tiring, try and pace yourself and save yourself for the last 100 metres and you should have a good time. A good way to practice this is to make sure your in the lead by the end of the first straight as then it will only increase around the corner. Again one of the more physically tougher events but with a bit of pracice will have it down to a fine art.

800/1500 metre: Both of these are all about judgement and boundaries. Once you know these you will have some very good times. In the 800 metres a good start isnt essentail unlike the 1500 hundred where you should really try and avoid getting stuck behind the large crowd of runners, as you will find it had to get past without using up your hearts. Once in the lead of both events try and push the analogue stick far enough forward so that you are runnng at a pace faster than the other competitors this will give you an ever increasing lead but make sure you dont use any of your hearts up! Once on to the final lap of the 800 metre start to push the analogue stick full down around the 165metre mark and use the sprint at 60 metres, in the 1500 push full down about 140 and sprint from 60 metres to.

Long Jump: I would say probably one of the easier events, just make sure you have full power as if you hit the board correctly you should be able to jump in the region of 7.89m. Not really much to walk you through here just practice your timings, a good idea is to work on the triple jump as you will find it will have a direct afect on your long jump.

Triple Jump: Again just an advanced long jump but with a bit of a hop and skip thrown in. Again try to have a full power metre and time your jumps carefuly as it will have a large affect on your distance. If you are good at high jump you should be able to time your jumps perfectly on triple and long jump. The key to this event though is to make sure you time everything right, or even better perfect.

High Jump: I would say this was my most difficult event to learn due to the fact i was very poor at timing so many steps. But once you know how event should get easier. I found it slightly easier if i moved the controller slighlty more aound my hand so my fingers would swap buttons, this giving me the ultimate control. YOu probably will have to practice this event a little before you get any good at it, you will find when you get to heights above 2 metres with the ladies you will need to get perfects in your run up to get the extra speed needed. Remember once you have jumped to press the L1 or R1 button again to flick the legs over the bar otherwise you will knock it off causing frustration!

Discus: At first i could not do this event what so ever i could hardly get the power bar to half way, so i have now deviced a technique i calling palming :) Place your whole palm over both the analogue buttons and then start to move your hand in fast rotation not only does the power bar get to full you should have a large amount of control when it comes to judging the red section, thus giving you every bit of power available, meaning you only have to focus on the right angle.

Pole Vault: My worst event, not because im bad at it but because i despise it i feel like im doing a chore, but even so i will help you out. This event is pretty simple to get the average heights but even the better button bashers will find it slightly difficult to get the higher heights. In the event try and bash the buttons hard enough to make it easier for you to time your jump, the hader you bash the higher the power bar goes making the blocks available for you to time the moving bar to get it in there, may sound strange but you will understand once playing. Once you have done so i would say its best if you let the moving bar hit the top of the power bar and come back down to give you more time to get ready otherwise you have jst stopped bashing the buttons and may not time it as well if you had been watching it from the start. Apart from that the even is pretty simple.

Javelin: Again this is another event where you have to push the buttons to get a higher power bar, on the run try and push it to as high as you can go as once the camera angle moves you will be left with very little time. Push the left analogue stick up about halfway, again with practice you will feel how far to push the stick to get the correct 45*. Try and wait till the man/woman is nearer the end of the running surface before pressing R1 or L1 as you will gain a few metres which is essential to getting the world record.

Shot put: This event is all down to timing even if you do not get very much power you can still get a good throw in with a good 45* angle. My advice on this is to keep practicing it as you will find your timings become better and you will be hitting the higher ends of the power bar.
