Paper Mario 2 Walkthrough:

Prologue: A Rouge’s Welcome:

After watching the cut scene, you find that Princess Peach needs to meet Mario in Rouge Port. When Mario arrives you find that she is no were to be seen and maybe you will have to find the treasure by yourself. Walk around a bit, talk to people and get used to the controls. After watching Lord Crump having an argument with Goombella, walk up to them and begin your very first battle. Start by selecting your hammer and mario will walk up to Lord Crump. Hold back on the control stick and if you release it just as the red button lights up, it will inflict 2 X damage, instead of 1 and the words nice will appear. You should learn this trick because it will work with anything, including jumping, where you can press A as soon as you jump on your enemy to do a double jump. You will learn fighting techniques like this later on in the game. Repeat the process 2 more times to earn some star points, which let you level up when you have 100. Lord Crump will be angry and sets a whole lot of random small dudes to finish you and Goombella off. You and Goombella sneak out of the crowd. Go up the stairs and through the arch at the top. After that narrow escape, Goombella gives you a little ‘reward’ and introduces herself. Mario then introduces himself and explains why he is here. As you probably expected, she too is looking for the treasure. Mario tells Goombella about princess peach. Before you know it, Goombella becomes a part of your party and will from now on help you fight all your battles. Goombella tells you that we must see Professor Frankly, so save at the save block in front of you and talk to everyone in the area. Explore the houses if you want to. Then keep going left until you come across a lady looking for her contact lens. She will tell you to freeze, but obviously you will have to move sooner or later. You move and step on her contact lens. She will block the gate until you get her a new contact lens. Go into the shop nearest to you, the one with the flower symbol and talk to the mushroom guy. He says he will order a contact lens in for you. You will have to wait for quite some time. After that, keep going right to the end of this area and enter the next area. A guy will come speeding past you and steels half your coins. Go back to the main square, go through the arch in the center, when the screen flips round, go right and enter the house. The guy that took your money will give it back. You should use this time to find out about people, explore the shops and stock up on any items, although you don’t really need any yet, before finally, making your way to the professor. Go back to the east side and walk into the second nearest house to you to meet Professor Frankly. He tells you that you must collect the seven crystal stars to find the treasure. Mario shows him the map he has and Professor Frankly sets off with you to underground Rouge Port. Walk out the house and jump down the pipe. Save your progress and start by going right. To the left is the fortuneteller who you don’t really need to talk to. Go down the stairs to come across three Goombas. Start by switching the order of you and Goombrella so she attacks first. Do a head bonk on the one nearest to you. If you manage to do a double jump by pressing a just as you make contact with him, you will kill him in one go. Now Mario can attack the spiky one in the middle with his hammer. Again, if you inflict 2 X damage, you will kill him in one go. Just remember to release the control stick as soon as you here the beep. Attack the last one with a head bonk and you should have only lost 1 hp. You should use battle tactics like this all the time. Save again if you want to as you don’t have much health yet and continue on. Jump onto the moving platform and go down the next pipe. You will notice that from now on, when you come across an enemy, you can hit them first to have the first move. Likewise, they can do the same to you, so you need to be quick. Do this with the two enemies up ahead and they can both be killed by 2 X damage. Collect the coins after killing them and continue on down the stairs. Hit all the blocks to earn some items that you can use in and out of battles. Hit the two blocks blocking the pipe and go down. You will find a new enemy that requires 3 X damage to be killed. Strike him first, so that you will not loose any health in the battle. You will then come across two of them, so you defiantly loose some damage. The battle should soon be over and when it is, go to the blue block and hit it to reveal the stairs. You may wonder what all these platforms are with paper plane symbols on them. Well, go through the door to find out. Try to open the chest. The voice tells you to find the key, so go back and walk off the edge to drop down to the platform with the key. Use the black key on the chest and the chest gives you a curse. But don’t worry, that ‘curse’ enables you to turn into a paper plane when standing on those platforms. Stand on the platform on and fly over to the place that was too high for you to get to before. Go through to discover the Thousand Year Door. After watching the cut scene, you realize that unfortunately, you can’t use the door just yet. You have to collect the crystal stars, which will be the next thing you do. You arrive back at Rouge Port and the Professor explains you can now use special moves and teaches you all you need to know about battling, including HP and FP, so pay close attention and practice because the game gets a lot harder from here on. He then tells you that the Princess came to see him the other day. Obviously the next thing to do is to go to Petal Meadows. The professor leaves you behind and tells you to set off to Petal Meadows. Before you leave, he gives you the power smash badge, which will increase you hammer’s power. Before you leave, it’s a good idea to stock up on things you need like items. You should buy a couple of mushrooms and fire flowers, which you can get from the shop in Main Square. If you do go into the item shop, you will realize that your contact lens has still not arrived. Go into the house with the bed symbol on it and go upstairs. On the upper level, go through the door and walk to the badges shop. Buy some badges if you want, but they are expensive so I wouldn’t bother at the moment. Remember this place, if you need any badges and look out for shops like this in the future. Save and go back to the east side of Rouge Port. Walk up to the man guarding the gate. You can pay him 10 coins, but its better to battle him for experience. If you do battle him, you will need to use either couple of fire flowers and your hammer to kill him, as he is quite strong. Don’t jump on him though, because he has a spear. As Goombella can’t attack him, you might as well make her use the fire flower items, if you have any. You will probably need a couple of fire flowers. Don’t bother using the sweet treat, if you die, just restart the Gamecube and try again. After inflicting 20 X damage on him, he will be defeated and let you pass. Go to the resting house and pay 5 coins to rest and your health will be regained. This is the cheapest way to regain health out of battle. Also stock up on fire flowers and mushrooms again, as you probably would have used quite a few. Save again and go to the area that the guard was blocking. As you can see everything is closed, but remember that trouble center, it will open soon. Go back down the pipe to underground Rouge Port. What? You didn’t remember to equip the badge? That was silly. Whenever you receive a badge, you need to equip it for it to work. Equip it now, if you haven’t already and go to the other tube you went down earlier. To use the power smash hammer, select hammer in battle and select power smash, which will cost use 2 FP. You shouldn’t need to use it until you come across harder enemies. Make you way to the end and go through the door that you didn’t enter before. Press X and Goombella will tell you about the super switch in front of you. Go back to near the save block and save if you want. Go to the plane platform and fly over to the platform that you couldn’t get before. Go through the door hammer that thing. That thing is the very first mini boss. Ok, start by hammering it’s tentacles with the power smash. Once the tentacles are gone, simply give him a good kicking, using fire flowers and power smashes. Before you know it, he will be defeated and the floating platforms will appear. Go back to Rouge Port and stock up on items if you want and take a rest. Other wise continue by jumping from platform to platform go down the pipe to begin the next chapter.

Chapter 1: Castle and Dragon:

Ok, so here we are, in Petal Meadows. This place is slightly more pleasant than Rouge Port. Begin by saving and then continue through the pleasant grounds, admiring the beautiful scenery. After seeing the dragon flying past, hit the block to get a mushroom and go over the bridge. Hit the next block to get a close call and continue down, battling any enemies you see, for the experience. Keep going, across the bridge, until you get to the end. Stand next to the bush and press A to open it. Go down the tube and it’s pretty obvious what you do next. Jump on the switch to reveal the bridge. Keep going to get the star piece and go back and cross the bridge. Onwards lies your next objective, but before you go there, go back to Rouge Port to do some side quests. Now that you are on to chapter 1, you will notice that the trouble center is open. Before you go there, walk up to the arch that leads to the Main Square and just walk into the middle of the wall in front of you to discover a secret area. Cleaver, eh? Walk past the darkly guy and jump onto that box at the very end. Walk to the left, behind the building and you will pick up another star piece. No go to the trouble center. For each of these tasks you solve, you will be rewarded. It won’t take long, so you might as well. After doing all these, you will be a lot richer. Look at the board and select the first trouble on the list, ‘Need a Key.’ Select it and go to the house with the big pad lock on it. Talk to barf and go to the badge shop, by going through the rest house. And there it is, right in front of you! Pick it up and take it back to Garf. He gives you 20 coins and gives you access to his house. Now go back and take on the next trouble, ‘Safe Delivery.’ Meet him behind that house in the main square and take the package to Goomfrey, in front of the Professor’s house. Go back to the guy that gave you the package and he will give you 20 coins. Now take on the next trouble, ‘Price Adjustment.’ Afur is right outside, so say that you have checked the prices and say that the fire flowers are 10 coins, the sleepy sheep is 8 coins and that the tasty tonic is 3 coins. He gives you 20 coins for helping him. Next up, is Goomther’s trouble, so take on his trouble and meet him in Main Square. Talk to him and go to that secret area again in the east side and talk to the guy in blue. He will run off, so go the main square and then to the place where you met Goombella. You can see him hiding behind the stairs, so go to him and he will run off again. This time go through the arch in main square and there he is, next to the house that the other thief lives in. He will then give up and Goomther will give you 20 coins. The next trouble is ‘hit me’ so meet Mousimilian in main square and hit him until he says “I remember.” He doesn’t give you any coins, but it was fun anyway. Go on to the last problem and meet him at the docks, where you met Goombella. All you need to do is give him a mushroom and he will pay you 11 coins. You should now be a hell of a lot richer. Stock up on any items you need, or you may want to buy some badges, then make your way back to Petal Meadows and onto Petalburg. You should defenitly get a POW block, as it only costs 5 coins. Then take a rest if you want, explore the area and enter the pink house and talk to the major. Proceed and you will receive an email from Professor Frankly. Explore the rest of the town, if you want before going on to Shhwonk Forest. Check behind one of the first 3 bushes to find another star piece. You will come across a new enemy, in battles called the Koopa Troopa that can boost it’s defense. Get the POW block by hitting the gold block and go into the grey building. Check the pillar and battle the two Bald Clefts. Jumping on them will not work, nor will the hammer so a couple of power smashes should do the trick. Or use the POW block to kill them both in one. Go through the opening to battle 3 Koopa Troopas. Use a POW block to inflict 2 X damage and they will all be on their backs, unable to attack, so finish them off with simple moves. You will probably notice that double attack moves like power smash don’t inflict double damage on them, so it’s a waste to use those moves. Continue up to the next building and check the pillar inside. These Bristles have spikes, so any attack that involves going near them, i.e. hammer or jump will result in you getting hurt. Use a fire flower or POW block, they only have 2 HP and then go through the opening. Continue up and hit the HP/ FP recover block if you need to and go through the next building. Save and walk up to that… thing and check it. He will simply ask you some questions and if you get three wrong, he will hurt you. Obviously, the first answer is stone keys. The next answer is 16 coins. Answer number 3 is Kroop. The answer to question 4 is of course Hooktail Castle. The fifth and final answer is go through a pipe. When he moves back, go down the pipe. Get the multi bounce and equip it, then proceed to the left, killing all the Fuzzys in the process and get the Sun Stone. Use the multi bounce to kill the 4 Fuzzys that appear. Now go right, past the pipe, again, defeating all the Fuzzys in your path and pick up the Moon Stone. These Fuzzys can be a real pain because they have a sleepy sheep. Once you have defeated them, go back to stumble across a Gold Fuzzy. Defeat him and all the other Fuzzys that appear and go back up the tube and save, then hit the HP/ FP recover block. Go back to the major’s house and talk to him. Next you need to find the pipe that leads to the castle. Ok, exit Petalburg and you will be stopped by someone called Koops. It seems that he wants to join your party and help defeat Hocktail. Take him alone and find out his extremely useful abilities. Now leave Petalburg and go down the pipe you come across and when you are standing at the top of the other end, use Koops’ shell ability to retrieve the happy heart. Continue on, defeating all the enemies and when you get to the six stones surrounding the big pillar, walk up to the two stones with a hole in them and place the sun and moon stone in them. You will notice that when you hold the shell and then release it, the shell will go in the opposite direction. So stand behind the switch on the left, press X, just before the shell hits the wall, press X to hold him. Keeping your finger on X, walk over to the switch on the right and release X and the shell will change direction and hit the switch on the left, whilst you simultaneously hit the one on the right with your hammer. If you hit both the switches at once, the secret pipe that leads to the castle will appear. Go down, arrive on the hill over there in the distance and enter the castle. First of all, save using the save block and then go through the arch. You will notice that the bridge is broken. Walk towards the screen and go down the steps. Travel across the steeping stones under the bridge and you will see the happy heart in front of you. Obviously, it’s out of your reach, so use Koops’ shell to retrieve it. Remember to equip it, then go back to where the save block was and jump onto the gold block to bounce up to the next level. Fly over the broken bridge and go through the purple door. Watch out for Paratroopas here. POW blocks are very useful on these. Clear the room then go through the next door. Tell Koops to read the letter. Then walk over to the skeleton near the door and, well, you knew this was coming didn’t you? Hammer the skeletons and move to the door that was blocked. You will now battle 5 of the skeletons. Koops shell attack will have no effect, nor will jumping. First, use Koops’ power shell to attack all enemies at once, which will kill every single one apart from the pink one in the middle. Then use Mario’s power smash to finish him off. When they are all gone, proceed through the next door. Get the Shine Sprite and go up the stairs. Hit the small purple block to bring the purple block near the door down, if it isn’t already. Jump onto that block, then onto the bigger grey block. From there jump across to the next big grey block and hammer the gold block in front of you. Now go back to the small gold and purple blocks and hammer the gold block to send the big block with the triangle on it up out of the way. You can now stand on the ledge were the big gold block was and use Koops’ shell to hit the red switch. This will rearrange the stairs. Go up the stairs and use Koop’s shell to retrieve the castle key. Hit the red switch again and use the key to unlock the door. Save your progress and go through the door. Stand by the right prison cell and use the hold feature on Koops’ shell to open the door in time for you to get in before it closes. Go through the hole and talk to the chest in the next room. The chest wants you to find a key. Go through the door and open the box in the middle. Navigate through the maze before the roof closes in on you. Now open the chest. You now have the ability to turn side ways and be as thin as a piece of paper. Go back and turn side ways to escape the prison cell. Do the same to get into the other two and pick up the Attack FX R. Now go back to the previous room and save. Keep going back until you get to the room where Koops thought he found his dead father. Go through the prison cell with no horizontal bars using Mario’s new ability and get the castle key. No go back to where you just saved and go up the stairs. Stand on the big green block and use Koops’ shell to hit the green switch. When you get to the top, go up the next flight of stairs and unlock the door with the padlock. Hit the blue switch and walk until you get to the next gap blue switch using Koops’ shell. Now jump through the open window. You will land on a ledge. Go across and pick up the star piece. Now go back and were the second switch was, walk through the open window and get the star piece. Walk to the left now, and jump through the next open window to get back in. Go through the door. Use Koops’ shell to hit the small switch and hold it. Stand on the big green block and release X. When you get to the top, go through the door on the left. After talking to the rat thief, open all the chests to get some goodies. Also get the Shrine Sprite. In one of the chests, there will be a castle key, so go back to the previous room and unlock the door to the right. In this room, hit the gold block so the big block comes down, then use Koops’ hold feature to hit the small block whilst you are standing on the big one. Walk to the left on the ledge and turn side ways to get to the paper plain platform. Walk over to the far ledge and walk to the star piece and pick it up. Now walk back to the paper plain platform and fly over to the ledge down below. Proceed through the door. Go down the stairs and hit the gold block to make the bigger one go down. Jump down and pick up the Last Stand P. Go back and hit the gold block again and jump on the big block as it is traveling up. Jump down to get the castle key. You have no choice but to jump, jump off the ledge and save. Go back up to where you just got the key and go up the stairs this time. When you reach the top, get the Shine Sprite and unlock the next door. Phew! Outside again. These next enemies can be tough; there is no easy way to do it. Just make sure you recover your health regularly. With that done, proceed to the end of the castle bridge and up the winding stairs. When you get to the big purple door, save and recover if you need to. And prepare to battle Hooktail, the first boss. Begin by power smashing Hooktails’ foot, trying not to use up any items you have. Remember the sound FX badge you got? It makes your attacks sound like a cricket! Exactly what Hooktail can’t stand. This is the key to defeating Hooktail. Continue hitting him with your hammer. Use mushrooms to keep your health at balance. After a while he will give up and offer you 1000 coins. Take the coins. Mario will walk up to him and Hooktail will bite him. What, you thought he would actually give you the coins? Now continue giving him all you’ve got. It shouldn’t be too difficult and when you defeat him, he will spit out Koops’ dad. And even better, he gives you the Crystal Star, for free! What a relief. After the long cut scene, you get to control the princess. Enter the door on the left and take a shower. Go back and the other door will open. Go through and walk up to the next door. Go through it. The princess will now contact Mario using the computer. Ok, after watching the shorter cut scene, you get to control Bowser. Walk up to the end of the room. Oh dear! Looks like Bowser is very angry and is on his way to Rouge Port. With that done, Mario is back at Petalburg. And it seems that Koops wants to stay with Mario forever, which is a good thing for Mario. Before heading back to Rouge Port, walk up to the gate beside the pink house and turn side ways to get in and grab the Mega Rush P. Stock up on any items you need, and save. Now make your way back to Rouge Port. Mario will receive a message on your way to Rouge Port from Princess Peach. You know, the one you sent earlier. When you arrive back at Underground Rouge Port, go to the save block and save. You might want to go through the door to your left and trade some star pieces you have collected for badges. Next, go down the tube next to the save block. Go down the stairs and go down the tube. Now enter the opening that leads to the Thousand Year Door. Stand in the center again and the next crystal star will be added to your map. After seeing Professor Frankly, talk to Luigi outside. Ok, there’s some catching up you can do before you set out to find the next crystal star. Firstly, make your way to the left side of Rouge Port and slip through the gap in between the houses that the thief is standing next to. Get the star piece that is behind the barrel. Now go to the main square and you will notice a Merchant that sells things who wasn’t there before. He doesn’t really have anything useful. Go to the contact lens shop and you will find that they finally have your contact lens. Get it and take it to the old lady. Proceed to the new area and have a look around. You will notice that the pipe there leads to where you need to go next. But it is too high for you reach and it becomes obvious that it is the exit pipe, not the entrance. So without further delay, lets go find the entrance pipe. Go back to the Thousand Year Door and before you get there you will stumble across what Professor Frankly described. Slip through the bars next to where the thing was and you will see it again. Walk up to it and he will tell you about the X - Naughts. Follow him to where he lives and he will show you the pipe that leads to the forest. Before you go down, go to the Thousand Year Door and slip through the bars blocking the jump pad. Jump onto the platform and fly over to the next jump pad and use it to get the Shine Sprite. Slip through the bars that are surrounding you now and save, then go through the door for a little mini quest. In this mini quest, you have to battle up to 100 different groups of enemies, without recovering. Obviously we won’t be able to reach the beat all 100 trials, but when you get to trial number 10, you have the option of returning to the entrance. Doing the first 10 trials should be fairly easy, so do it for some star points and coins, then return to the pipe that leads to Boggly Woods Go through it and you will be taken to your next destination. And that’s the end of that chapter. So, you are now well on your way to collecting all the Crystal Stars, but there are still many more things to be discovered.
