Back to present, the next cut scene shows Lara climbing some rocks. Zip is coaching via her headset. He can see what Lara sees and provides a humerous commentary about wanting to throw up every time Lara looks down. He then tells her that Alister is back. The latter grabs a headset and asks her what she is doing in Bolivia. Lara does not reply... She spots a lower rock and makes a swan dive and grabs it! She then replies "Ascending". She pulls up and asks him to meet Tiwanaku, a lovely pre-Incan civilization, currently in ruins. She also tells him that she has been looking for some artifacts, specifically some ornate stone dais, among other things.
You begin the level at the top of the rocks that Lara climbed up during the last cut scene. Lara is here because Anaya called her and told her about an ancient temple that contains an ornate stone dais. So, your main objective is to find the ancient stone dais of Tiwanaku.
[Checkpoint] From the starting position, head forwards and then left beneath the rocks, where you will find a Bronze Knife (1/10). Go back to the starting position and turn left (or right, if the cliff is to your back) and approach the stone ledge. You receive instructions on how you can jump.
Stand against the rocks and press Jump. Lara will grab the edge automatically. To release, press Crouch Roll. Press Jump again to pull up. Do the same for the next ledge to climb up it. Just to the left, you will see a small rock. Approach it and press the Interact button to kick it. Before going to the pool on the left, enter the alcove on the right to collect a Bronze Knife (2/10). Jump into the pool. To swim on the surface, use the direction keys. If you want to dive into the water, press the Crouch Roll button. Use the direction keys to swim around. To swim upwards and surface, press Jump. Locate the low ledge on the other side. When Lara reaches it, she will climb out of the water automatically. Climb up on to the next ledge.
In the cut scene, Zip asks Lara to check her PDA. Lara does so, and she says that it works, if this is what Zip is wondering about. He just checked if it was waterproof as they told him.
Continue to the left, where a movable boulder blocks your way. To grab it, press the Interact button. Use the direction keys to move it around. To release it, press the Interact button again. Lara cannot pull it, so push it over the gap to reveal a ledge just ahead. Jump onto it. [Checkpoint]
Approach the vine on the right and Lara will grab it automatically. Climb up it until you reach a second vine on your right (to climb quicker, press the Interact button whilst climbing up). Press right and Jump to leap off the vine and grab the other one. Again, press right and Jump to reach the ledge. Go to the right. [Checkpoint]
When you reach the edge, jump to grab the rope (jump towards it and Lara will grab it automatically). When you do that, Zip comments that the video is going to make him sick if Lara keeps on swinging. Lara then replies that he should look away from the screen. There are two caves: one on the left and one straight ahead behind the waterfall. First, explore the left cave. Turn left and swing towards it and press Jump when you reach the highest point. Turn on your PLS (Portable Light Source). Follow the tunnel and get the Silver Knife (1/5). Drop down at the end (press the Crouch button whilst hanging) to reach the other alcove, which is behind the waterfall. Exit to the other side and jump to grab the opposite ledge. If you accidentally fall down, you can climb on the ledge in front of the alcove and try again.
When you pull up, the cut scene shows the area and river above the alcove.
When you regain control of Lara, she will look at a crevice in the wall above, which leads to the river. Jump up to grab it and shimmy to the left. Zip asks Lara to be careful, but this is a long trip, as Lara says, and he would to better taking deep breaths. Lara is very optimistic, Zip comments. Continue shimming to the left around the corner. To shimmy faster, press the Interact button while shimming. When you reach the end, jump to grab the ledge behind you. Pull up.
At the top of the waterfall - [Checkpoint] Go up the stream, hugging the right hand wall, because a boulder rolls from above. Or, from the bottom of the stream, enable the Accurate Aim* and shoot the sticks around the boulder to make it roll down (as shown in this screenshot - thanks to Carolann for the tip). When it passes, continue up the stream. Lara will look at the horizontal pole above. Step on the low rock behind the pole and jump to grab it. Move to the left and face the next pole. Press forward to swing towards it and jump to grab it. Then jump to grab the left hand part of the waterfall. Shimmy to the right and whilst pressing right, press Jump to grab the right hand part.
[*Note: The Accurate Aim allows you aim at various objects. On the PC version it is the Z button (by default). The PS2 players need to press the right analog stick. Press it down (not move it down) and you will feel a "click". We are not aware of the other versions, but you can check the Control Configuration of the game. You will see it as either Accurate Aim or Manual Aim.]
The cut scene, shows Lara listening to a guard. He talks to someone through a radio device, who obviously told him that someone is close. The guard replies that he does not see any climber and cannot shoot on sight if he cannot see anybody.
Pull up. The guard is still talking. Lock the target and shoot him until he is dead. Zip asks Lara if she has any idea who he is, but Lara says that he is unremarkable. "Is this good or bad?", Zip asks, and Lara replies that it is deliberate, which is not good. The man drops a Health pack, so pick it up.
(Note - The maximum amount of Health Packs you can carry is three.)
Use your Binoculars and activate the R.A.D. mode. Look around to spot the moving object beyond. Lara says it is a mechanism. Go to the left of the mechanism and get the Bronze Knife (3/10). Take a look above to spot the movable boulder. You can either:
• Jump on the wooden platform (mechanism) and quickly jump to grab the ledge where the boulder is. Make sure to press and hold the Jump button to jump higher and farther. Pull up.
• If you cannot do the above, grab the ledge beneath the boulder and shimmy to the right around the corner. When you see another ledge above, and whilst hanging, press Jump to grab it. Pull up.
(Both ways are shown in this screenshot.)
Grab the boulder and push it fowards to throw it on the front side of the wooden platform. This will raise the other end. Drop down, climb on the rock next to the wooden platform, and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to grab the ledge with the two waterfalls ahead. Pull up and continue ahead. [Checkpoint] Use the Grapple to catch the shimmering circular door ahead and press the Interact button to pull it. To release the Grapple, press the same button you used. Go through the doorway.
The cut scene shows two guards talking and Lara entering sneakily.
Kill the two guards. Press the Combat Lock button to lock on an enemy and shoot. Rotate Lara to aim at the other enemy. Zip asks Lara who these guys are. He finds it weird that some ruins are guarded this way. Vault onto the rock on the left and jump up to grab the ledge (as shown here). Shimmy to the left without stopping until you reach the end. The middle part of the ledge collapses, so if you fall down, you need to grab the ledge again, but this time jump to grab the left part. Jump to grab the horizontal pole behind and then the narrow ledge of the pillar on the other side. Traverse to the left around the corner, and while hanging, jump to grab the next ledge. Press Jump again to reach the ledge above. [Checkpoint]
Jump to grab the rope, swing and jump to the opposite side behind the waterfall (exactly above the ledge that collapsed - if it did for you). Go behind the waterfall and climb into the alcove, where you will find a Bronze Knife (4/10). You can get this Reward from the ledge before grabbing the rope: Use the Grapple to catch it, then grab the rope and swing to the right of the waterfall (thanks to Bruce for this tip). Drop down, continue to the other side of the ledge and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to grab the second one. Finally jump to the opposite ledge. [Checkpoint] Draw your weapon and follow the passage. A guard will start shooting at you from the right, so dispense with him.
Approach the broken part of the bridge and take a look above to spot the shimmering sign. Jump over the gap and quickly press Jump again. Lara will use the Grapple to catch the sign and use it as a rope. Swing and jump to the opposite side (by pressing Jump, you also release the Grapple). When you jump off the ledge, a part of the bridge collapses, which allows you return back up and try again if you accidentally fall down, without having to take the long route (see this screenshot). Go up the steps and through the doorway. Notice the Bronze Knife (5/10) on the left. You cannot reach it, so back up a bit and use the Grapple to retrieve it. Follow the passage around to the left.
In the next cut scene, Lara talks to Zip. She comments on the Temple that she can see beyond. She says she is very beautiful and that she is falling in love with her all over again. Zip is used to hearing Lara talking this way and replies that she says the same thing to all the ruins. Lara says she is a lucky girl and then uses her Binoculars to scoot the area around. She sees a helicopter. The bloody tourists are coming again to spoil it. Zip asks Lara what she sees and she says some men, probably mercenaries, judging from the look. Zip again wonders what they are doing there. "Getting into trouble", Lara replies.
[Checkpoint] There are several guards down there, so stay on your toes. From this position, press the Combat Lock button and then the Interact button to throw down the nearby rocks, luckily killing two of the guards that are patrolling at the bottom of the slope. Slide down the slope with your weapons drawn. Two more guards will apear from the left, so kill them. Depending on the difficulty mode you play, they will drop up to three Health Packs. If you already have three of them, you cannot pick up any more. Heal Lara after the battle and pick up the Health Packs you need. Opposite the slope you can find a Bronze Knife (6/10) inside an alcove.
Head up the slope next to the one you slid and draw weapons. Kill another guard, who drops a Health Pack and his SMG gun. Pick up the gun and before using the rope, drop down to the other side and go to the right, where you will find a Bronze Knife (7/10). Return back and jump to grab the rope. Swing towards the ledge on the other side and jump there.
There are six guards to the right down the slope and you can probably see only four of them. Draw wepons and slide down the slope. Press the Interact button to shoot the decrepit pillar on the left and kill the guards that patrol below. Be careful not to fall down when you pass the stone bridge. You can use the low walls for cover, but if the guys take a lot of your health, you can return back to where you left the other Health Packs. When all guards are dead, pick up the items they dropped if you need them. Four of them dropped their RC650 Assault Rifle, but if you decide to get it (you get one and the others count as ammo) you need to drop the SMG gun. Heal Lara and pick up one or both Health Packs the guards dropped.
Facing the steps, climb on the block to the left and then the next one. Shoot the wall on the left (as shown in this screenshot) and get the Silver Knife (2/5). Go up the steps of the Temple.
The cut scene shows Lara going up the steps. Two mercenaries shoot at her before scarpering.
[Note: This cut scene may not play if you climb up the blocks to the Silver Knife. If, after getting the Knife, you jump directly to the stairs and do not climb up the rest of the blocks (as shown in this screenshot), the cut scene will play. The mercenaries will then die and you will be able to pick up their Assault Rifle.]
Enter the Temple and pick up the Assault Rifle (that will count as ammo if you have the gun) that one of the guards from the cut scene dropped (if the cut scene did not play, see the Note above). Go down the stairs. [Checkpoint] Kick one of the small rocks to activate the rotating spiked trap beyond. Notice the shimmering sign above. You will use the Grapple here. Run forward, jump at the edge and press Jump again whilst in midair to use the Grapple. Swing and jump to the opposite side. Go up the steps and through the narrow passage on the left, where you will find a Bronze Knife (8/10). Exit and enter the room with the chains.
The brief cut scene shows the two chains in the middle of the room and an alcove above.
Room with chains - As you have probably guessed, you need to jump from chain to chain. There is only one accesible chain at the moment and it is the right hand one in the middle (right if you have the entrance to your back). Grab it and climb up as much as you can. Now you need to jump and grab the other chain (in the middle of the room again), but when you do so, the chain starts moving down. So, quickly climb up (press the Interact button to climb quicker) and jump back to grab the first chain. Jump into the alcove.
Continue through the tunnel, jump to grab the chain in the next room and climb to the bottom. Or hang from the edge of the alcove and drop down. Go through the opening in the wall and follow the passage. [Checkpoint] Jump into the water and swim through the underwater passage. Keep an eye above to spot the surface. Climb out of the water and get the Bronze Knife (9/10). Jump into the water again, swim to the other side of the passage and climb out of the water. [Checkpoint] Draw weapons, because a jaguar attacks when you go down the steps, so either kill it or totally ignore it.
Boulder traps - Continue through the passage, but be careful, because there are huge boulders that threaten your safety. Carefully pass them to reach a room with a movable cage. Notice the other boulders on the left. You need to grab the cage and start pushing it between the second set of boulders. That way, the boulders will hit the cage and not Lara. You need to be careful however, because they may squeeze Lara when she reaches the second set or when she is close to the end and exits. To avoid the latter, you can push the cage until the middle of the second set, climb on the cage, drop down and exit freely. Go up the steps and follow the hallway to the next room.
The cut scene shows Lara entering a big room. The mechanisms along the room deactivates and the stone door on the other side closes. Same as the door you came through.
Room with stone door and mechanisms - [Checkpoint] You can use the Binoculars and examine the various objects to see which are movable and which are mechanisms. Before doing anything, go to the back right corner and climb on the ledge, where you will find a Bronze Knife (10/10). A jaguar is lurking below, so kill it from above.
The crate puzzle - There is a movable cage close to the Bronze Knife and two more below. There are also three pressure plates, which means that each cage must be positioned on a plate. In fact, you need just two, as Lara can step on the third plate. Push pull the first cage (on the right), which is close to the plate. To put the other one on the upper level, you need to use the ramp on the left. Position the cage on the ramp (to the side that is closest to the entrance). You need to jump on the other side of the ramp and flip the cage on to the top level. You can use the steps at the end of the ledge in the middle of the room and jump on the ramp (as shown in this screenshot).
If you want the Gold Knife, you need to position the cage on the middle plate. The camera shows that the stone door is ready to work. Now step on the left plate (if the entrance is to your back) and the door will start opening. When the door is half open (as shown in this screenshot), step off the plate. The door will remain half open, which will give you the access to the Knife.
(Note: You may encounter a problem here. On stepping on the plate, a cut scene plays where it shows the door opening, blocking your way to the Gold Knife. In that case, do not step on the plate. Either perform a low somersault over the plate or run past it diagonally, as shown in this screenshot. That way, the door will not open during the cut scene. Then you can step on on the plate and step off when the door is half open.)
Alternative method (by Brian C) - If the above method will not work for you, here is what you can do: Bring both cages on the top level. Position the first two cages on the left and right plates and lastly position the third cage on the middle plate (the middle plate must be done lastly). The cut scene that shows the door opening will play. Now facing the stone door, pull the middle cage off the plate and the door will close. The next part must be done quickly. Push the cage back on the plate and quickly turn around, run and pull off the either left or right cage. The door will then remain half open.
Alternative method (by shimodax) - If the above methods fail for you, you can try the following (it is a way of getting the Knife even if you have already placed the three cages on the plates): First, bring both cages on the upper level and push pull the cages on the three plates (it does not matter the order) to fully open the door. Now first pull one of the side cages off the plate and then the middle one. The door will remain open. Go to the side plate from where you removed the cage and step on it, looking at the door at the same time. The door will start closing, so step off when it is halfway down.
If you were not quick enough and the door closed or the door is half open but the chain (in the back left corner) you need to use in order to leave block your way (as shown in this screenshot), push the middle cage back on its plate and again go to the side plate and step on it. The door will start opening (slower this time), so step off when it's half open. In general, you can play between the middle and side plates until you make the door half open. When the middle cage is on its plate, the door opens when you step on the side plate. When the middle cage is not on its plate, the door closes when you step on the side plate. You can open and close the door as many times as you wish, until the door is half open and the chain you need to use in order to leave does not block your way. (Note: the second side cage must be on its plate all the time.)
Once you solve the crate puzzle - Go to the back left corner (if the entrance is to your back) and climb on the ledge. Jump to grab the chain, then the opposite ledge. Traverse around to the right and when you see another ledge above you, jump to grab it. Pull up and grab the horizontal chain. Swing to the other side and drop down. Hang from the edge on the right, release and grab the ledge below. Shimmy to the right and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump close to the exit door. [Checkpoint]
Go to the other side, past the exit door, and jump to grab the ledge (as shown in this screenshot). Shimmy to the right and jump to grab the ledge above. Use the horizontal chain to reach the opposite side, where the Silver Knife (3/5) is. Get it and make your way back the same way you came. Before exiting and whilst facing the exit door, grab the either left or right crevice of the pillar. Jump to grab the crevice above, and then the door (as shown in this screenshot). Jump to grab the top of the door, then the ledge above. Enter the alcove and pick up the Gold Knife (1/1). [Checkpoint] Carefully, make your way down. Go through the exit. The passage harbours traps, so you need to press the correct buttons as they appear on your screen. You probably noticed the Silver Knife in the pit, but you will get in a while. Follow the next passage to the end. [Checkpoint]
(Note: Many people encouter problems in the passage with the traps. Whe we say "press the correct buttons", we mean that you need to press the buttons that appear on your screen. On PC, for example, the icons that appear are the arrow keys. If the Up icon appears, you need to press the Up arrow key. On PS2, for example, the icons that appear are the four buttons on the right side of the gamepad. If the Circle icon appears, you need to press the Circle button. Note, however, that you need to press each button as soon as it appears, because you have less than two seconds.)
Room with metalic weight poles - There is a jaguar lurking below and you may want to kill it from here. Hang from the edge and traverse to the right. Release and grab each ledge below to reach the ground. Locate the movable rock almost beneath the entrance (to the left if you face it, as shown here). Push it to the end and follow the passage on the right to reach the bottom of the pit you passed before. Pick up the Silver Knife (4/5) and return back.
Climb on the ledge in the corner and jump to grab the closest metalic pole. It will rotate and give you access to the second pole. Jump to grab it and do the same for the third one. Once it rotates, jump to grab the ledge on the wall. Shimmy to the right and jump to grab the next ledge. Shimmy a bit to the right until the metalic pole is behind you. Jump to grab it (as shown here). Once it rotates, jump to grab the edge of the alcove. Pull up and get the Silver Knife (5/5).
Jump back to grab the last pole. It will rotate towards the wall you came from. If you fall down, you need to use the metalic poles again until you reach the ledge just before grabbing the last pole leading to the Knife. When you reach it, shimmy to the right and jump to grab the ledge above. Again, shimmy to the right and grab the ledge above. Finally, jump to grab the ledge on the left. Shimmy left around the corner and drop to the ground. Follow the passage and climb on the ledge above. Go to the right and pass the rocks. [Checkpoint] Follow the passage to the end.
In the cut scene Lara uses her Binoculars and watches some mercenaries beyond. When she spots the stone dais, she has a flashback of when she was a kid, because she has been in a similar place before. The flashback shows Lara entering a place. A man is laying dead in front of a sword. Lara approaches the sword and tries to touch it, but her mother comes and interrupts her. Lara pushes the sword in the stone and a green light is activated. A big metal circle rises up and her mother pulls her back and wonders what it is. Lara says that there is something in the light and her mother approaches the metal circle and it seems that she can see someone inside the light. She asks who he is. The person says something about Lara (probably because she was the one who activated the light) and her mother tells this person that Lara meant no harm. The voice seems to say "Pull out the sword". Lara's mother removes the sword and she disappears through a strong light! Lara finds a book and takes it with her.
Back to the present, the mercenaries shoot at Lara, but a man orders them to hold their fire. He talks to Lara and tells her that he wanted to meet her. Lara still has her weapons drawn and the man says that he just wants to talk to her, whilst the camera shows a blonde woman in a helicopter. The man shows Lara a part of the sword and asks her is she has found a piece of this. A quick flash back reminds Lara that the piece that this man is holding is a part of the sword. Lara asks him where he found it. The man says that it does not matter where he found it, but what it does. He asks her if she knows, but Lara says that what she knows is her own business. The man then assumes that Lara does not have any piece. He turns his back to leave whilst saying to her that Amanda said that Lara was sloppy and that she should have paid more attention in Paraiso. Lara is surprised to hear the man talking about Amanda. She tells him that Amanda is dead and asks him what he knows about Paraiso. No more talking from him.
When you regain control of Lara, you are on a bridge. Immediately run forwards because the bridge collapses. Jump over the gaps to reach the ground. This is the ornate stone dais you are looking for. The main objective is completed, but there are eight mercenaries around, so you need to kill them all. Some of them drop Health Packs and guns (which will count as ammo). [Checkpoint] When all are dead, the level ends.
The cut scene shows Lara approaching the stone. She kneels and talks to herself. There is more than one. Her father was right. Zip asks Lara what this is about and Lara says they have some work ahead of them.
Lara returns to Croft Manor. She enters Zip's office and asks him who the man she talked to in Bolivia was. Zip pulls a picture of the man up on his PC and says he is one of the Rutlands from the States. He is the senator's youngest son, James Rutland. Lara asks Zip to call up the footage, whilst Winston welcomes her back. She asks him to approach the computer screen and take a look at the place that Lara saw in Bolivia. She says it is almost identical (to the one she visited when she was young), but it was just configured differently. Alister gets into the conversation and asks "Identical to what?" and Lara replies of something that she saw a long time ago in Nepal. Winston asks Lara if she believes that it is a fragment of the sword, but before she replies, Alister asks about the sword. Lara replies that it is more likely one of a kind.
Lara asks Zip to find out what he can about Rutland, particularly where he is at the moment. Zip advises Lara to try Peru, since he talked about Paraiso and she agrees since Rutland did imply information that the artifacts are there. Alister (who obviously has no idea what is going here) asks about Paraiso, what happened there and who Amanda is. Lara asks Alister to take the images and see what he can work out and asks Zip to call Anaya and tell her to meet Lara in Paraiso on Saturday morning. The cut scene shows Lara reaching Peru. The people run to hide and Lara says that they do not seem so keen on visitors these days. She asks Zip if he had news from Anaya and he tells her that Anaya will be waiting for her at the statue in the marketplace.
When Lara met Rutland in Bolivia, he implied a connection between the stone dais and the ruin near Paraiso (you will see later what happened there). Lara wants to go there with Anaya and check some things, even if they will not find anything. So, you need to meet Anaya in the Paraiso marketplace and then learn the significance of the second Tiwanaku ruin.
[Checkpoint] There is a dummy statue ahead that you can use and practice your target and shots. Just make sure you sure the Pistols with unlimited ammo. You can also see a ball on the right that you can kick. If you kick it behind the GOL! flags (as shown here), you will hear the homonymous cheering.
Once you are done, go behind the house on the right (from the starting position) and climb on the box, then on the roof of the building (as shown in this screenshot). Without turning at all, take a look above to spot the shimmery lamp. You will jump and press Jump again whilst in midair to use the Grapple and catch the lamp. Then swing and jump to land on the opposite roof. Drop to the small courtyard and pick up the Bronze Statue (1/8). Push the movable crate next to the lowest building and use it to climb on the roofs and return back to the road. Follow the road around to the left. [Checkpoint] Pass the doorway to reach the statue in the marketplace.
In the cut scene, Lara meets Anaya and they talk about the empty city and that something has frighten them. Anaya seems sad, because if she knew where this would lead, she would never have told Lara about Bolivia. She also tells her that La Paz is not far away. A truck full of mercenaries comes to the place. Lara tells Anaya to leave and that she will catch up (once she is done with them).
Marketplace with statue - The objective about meeting Anaya is completed, but one more has been added. You need to escape the ambush and get out of town. Draw weapons, because four guards exited the truck. From the starting postion, you can shoot the oil tank of the truck ahead and explode some of the guards. When you kill them all, four more guards will emerge from two doors. Once you are done with them, a guys with a Shotgun will appear on a balcony; kill him. Some of them leave Health Packs. Replain your health and take the Health Packs you need. They also leave their guns, which will count as ammo.
Go up the stairs of the church and use the part where there are no railings to jump on the stall. Or, climb on the stall from the ground (as shown in this screenshot). Jump to grab the ledge and go to the left. Jump to grab the horizontal pole, then the next one. Finally jump to the ledge and get the Bronze Statue (2/8). Drop to the ground.
Locate the tall pole with the flag. To the right is a road that leads to a Bronze Statue (3/8) (as shown here). Get it and go back to the pole with the flag. Grab it and climb up. Jump to the balcony at the back and open the door of the building. Pick up the Silver Statue (1/2), exit and go to the left of the balcony. You need to jump to the opposite balcony, using the Grapple. So jump, and press Jump again to use the Grapple and catch the shimmery lamp above. Swing and jump to the balcony. The guard here dropped a Grenade and his Shotgun. Go around to the right and draw weapons. Kill the guard inside the building and pick up the Health Pack if you need it. There are also four Grenades on the table (Lara can carry up to four Grenades).
(Note: When you kill the eight guards, the guy with the Shotgun appears on the balcony. If you do not shoot him from the ground and you go up and kill him face to face, the second guy in the room with the Grenades will not appear. This works for the PC version and, according to Ada the Mental, for PS2 too.)
Second area with guards - [Checkpoint] Be prepared for a tough battle as soon as you open the door. You exit on a roof and five mercenaries shoot from the balconies roofs around and the ground. Stay on the roof and do NOT jump down. A couple of them throw Grenades that can kill Lara. To use a Grenade, lock the Target and press the Throw Grenade Flare button. Once you are done, either drop down to replain your Health and ammo or use the Grapple to catch the shimmery lamp above and jump to the opposite roof and get the items later. If you drop down, you can use the nearby ladder and climb up. A guard will attack from the building on the roof, so kill him. He drops his gun, which will count as ammo.
There are more mercenaries around the corner, so it is better if you stay on the roofs and kill them from above, as you can back up. Soon, a jeep will arrive and stop close to a spot that you can explode. One of the mercenaries will use a big gun from the jeep, so take care of him first. Also, there are three more guards beyond the jeep (close to the motorbike), so kill them too. If you use the big gun, one more guard will appear from a passage opposite the stall. Take care of him and do not approach the motorbike, because you will trigger the next cut scene.
When the coast is clear, replain your health and ammo. If you used Grenades during the fight, you will find some on the streets. Go behind the building opposite the stall, where you will find a Bronze Statue (4/8). Then go around the streets and approach the bike.
Zip talks to Lara in the cut scene and tells her that Anaya left, but there are mercenaries after her. Lara asks Zip to tell Anaya that she is on her away.
BIKE
[Checkpoint] You just escaped the ambush and you are ready to get out of town with the bike. You now need catch up with Anaya. You get the bike [DUCATI ;) ] and you need to go after the mercenaries and kill them before they reach Anaya. Zip talks to you during the process. He says that you need to be quick, because the mercenaries will reach Anaya. Do not panic, but do not break all the time and do not stop, because you will lose and start over. Avoid the rocks in the middle of the road and the various obstacles. You will also need to shoot some wooden bars to clear your way and you will also find some Health Packs that you need to run over in order to get them.
Soon, you will meet the mercenaries that are after Anaya. They are also on bikes, but Lara can shoot and kill them. They can also shoot you, so keep an eye on your health. The quicker you kill them, the sooner this part ends. Almost halfway, you will come across a bridge. [Checkpoint] Cross it, being careful of the gaps. Keep going, killing the mercenaries on your way. Soon, you will pass beneath a rock arch [Checkpoint] and meet three trucks. Stay on the left, because crates will start falling down from the right. There are two mercenaries on the front truck that will throw some crates. Shoot the crates and kill the threats. When the door of the truck fully opens, drive on it.
In the cut scene Lara gets off the bike and jumps on the top of the truck to spot Anaya. Anaya sees Lara from the mirror of her car and breaks a bit in order to approach the truck. Lara jumps with a Matrix way, kills the driver of the truck and lands on Anaya's jeep. The truck turns over and explodes and the two ladies leave.
Lara and Anaya reach the ruins. The place has not changed a lot. Lara confesses that there is something that did not tell Anaya before. She thinks that Amanda might not have died down there, showing the ruins at the same time. Lara flashes back. We see the same place, but some years ago. Young Lara and Amanda are together. Amanda slides down a rope and asks Lara to go down with her, because James (one of their friends) said that they are ready to break through (the young archaeologists probably found something). Lara follows her, but the rope breaks and Lara falls down.
YOUNG LARA
You play as young Lara and, of course, you do not have guns in your possession. You do however hold three Flares that you can use by using the Throw Grenade Flare button.
[Checkpoint] Go down the stairs and crawl through the opening. Follow the tunnel and slide down the slope. Continue through the tunnel and jump to grab the horizontal pole to swing above the opening. If you accidentally fall down, you can climb back up and try again. Follow the tunnel. Eva (one of your friends) is thrown towards Amanda and some rocks fall down and block your way, leaving Amanda behind, who sounds really scared. Go back and enter the tunnel on the left (if you have the rocks to your back). At the end, crawl beneath the railings.
[Checkpoint] Lara finds Sarah (one of her friends) dead and wonders what happened. There is a pressure pad on the right. Step on it to activate some poles alongside (some of them are broken). Locate the movable block next to Sarah and push pull it beneath the horizontal pole. Jump on the crate then jump to grab the pole. Turn to face the ledge, swing and jump to grab it. Pull up and pick up the Bronze Statue (5/8) from the right.
Jump to grab the narrow ledge on the wall. Traverse to the left and jump into the alcove above the ascent. [Checkpoint] Head forwards and drop down. Lara finds another friend. Someone calls her, and she recognizes the voice. It is Kent. Go to the right, avoiding the poles that are harmful to find Kent behind a gate. Lara asks what happened and he says that it killed Oscar (the other man that Lara found on the ground). Lara asks "What did?". Kent does not know and he also says he cannot get out because the gates won't budge and he asks her to get him out. He also tells her that there is a hole above him and they should get out quickly.
Pull the ball away from the pressure pad to remove the poles. Climb on the ledge oposite the way you came from and jump to grab the rope. Turn left to face the ledge above Kent, swing and jump on it. Pass the gates [Checkpoint] and jump down.
In the cut scene Kent calls for Amanda. She replies back and Kent recognizes her voice. He runs towards the way the voice was heard. Lara shouts at Kent to wait, but he does not listen to her. A creature grabs Kent and Lara runs back. The creature starts chasing Lara.
When you regain control of Lara, run foward and jump above the rocks to escape from the creature. Once you fall down, the creature disappears through the opposite wall. [Checkpoint] The are some crates in this area. All of them but two break when Lara jumps on them. There is a pressure pad on the other side of the room. Either kick one the crates on the pad or climb on the ledge and push the ball that it will roll over it. This will make a pole appear. If the ball rolls beyond the pad, push pull it on it. Climb on the ledge where the ball was and jump to grab the upper ledge with the bars. Amanda, who is behind the gate, says Lara that Jason is dead and that she does not know what happened. The creature appears, and Amanda gets scared and leaves. A man runs behind Amanda and the creature behind them.
Jump to grab the pole and then the rope. Swing and jump to the opposite ledge. [Checkpoint] Go to the right and pick up the Bronze Statue (6/8). Go through the doorway and follow the tunnel. Be careful of the spiked pit in the floor. Grab the pole above and travesre across. Follow the tunnel to the end.
The cut scene shows Lara exiting the ruins, calling Amanda. Amanda shows Lara a stone and says she thinks that it unlocks the door. Lara says that she does not like the idea of using the stone and asks Amanda if she read it properly (meaning the inscription). Amanda reminds Lara that the creature is coming and asks Lara if she has a better idea. Lara says to Amanda that the door might be trapped, but Amanda says that they are trapped. The creature attacks and Ammnda pulls the stone out. On doing that, the creature disappears. The place starts shaking and rocks fall from above. They run to escape. Lara manages to exit, but Amanda's leg was trapped somewhere. The gate starts closing, but Lara tries to keep it open, by holding it with her hands. She is waiting for Amanda, who cannot escape. The place starts filling water, but Amanda still cannot escape. Lara cannot hold the gate and it closes. Rocks fall on Amanda and Lara leaves to get some air.
Back to present, Anaya says that this is a terrible idea and they should leave the past behind. Lara says she is trying, but from what Rutland said, there might be a clue down there about what killed her mother, so Lara decides to go back. Anaya tells her that she cannot enter from the same place, because it is caved in. Lara says that the water entered there somehow, so there must be a way. She says Anaya that if she has any problem, she can talk to Zip who can communicate with Lara.
RUINS
[Checkpoint] Run behind the boxes on the left and pick up the Bronze Statue (7/8). Go to the other side of the area (where the pool is) and search for a Bronze Statue (8/8) between the wooden supports. Jump into the water and swim down and through the tunnel. Follow it as it goes and keep and eye above to spot the surface. Take some air and dive back down. Follow the tunnel to the other side and swim between the broken bars. Again, you can find a spot where you can surface above. Continue through the tunnel until you reach a circular big underwater room. Here you can surface. [Checkpoint]
The water puzzle - This is the area where Amanda was drown. Dive down and enter the passage, which is on the right as you entered this area. Get the Silver Statue (2/2) and return to get some air (or get it after solving the puzzle). You need to pull the four blue spheres, but they need be out together at the same time. Every time you pull one, it remains out for some seconds. You then need to swim around and pull the other three, so that all of them are out together. To avoid a possible drowning, try this: Surface above a sphere and dive down. Press the Interact button to pull it, then continue to the next sphere, pressing the Interact button whilst swimming to move faster. Keep pressing the Interact button to swim faster as you approach the sphere and Lara will grab it easier.
When you succeed, the cut scene shows Lara surfacing. A door opens and the room drains. Lara finds a shoe and assumes it belongs to Amanda. The shoe is unlaced, but she never imagined that Amanda could have survived.
There is an opening in one of the walls. Jump through it and approach the archaeological stone above. [Checkpoint]
In the cut scene Lara reads the inscription on the stone. She says that it tells about the last Queen on Tiwanaku. Her father was King, but she was lost and raised by a warrior. She became a Queen when a shaman (named Tunupa) discovered her loyalty heritage. Alister tells her that Tunupa is another name of Viracocha, their god of creation and according to myth, Virachoca lived in the lake Titicaca. She led her people in an era of peace. After many years of justice and just rule, there was some sort of power struggle and she died shortly thereafter. She was carried off in a boat to Paradise. This reminds Lara King Arthur's myth, because the similarities are striking. He was a youth, who was not aware of his royal blood and became a wise king with the help of a wizard and the magical staff of his sword. He died and was transported to Paradise.
Go behind the stone and through the doorway. Grab the ledge on the left, then jump to grab the next one above. Jump to grab the ledge behind you and pull up. Jump off the ledge and press Jump again whilst in midair to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering sign above. Swing and jump to the ground above the ascent. Grab the ledge above the shallow water, then jump to grab the edge of the alcove above. Pull up and turn to face the next ascent. You need to use the Grapple again and land above the ascent. So, jump off the ledge and press Jump again whilst in midair to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering sign above. Swing and drop to the ground above the ascent. Continue upwards and up the steps. [Checkpoint] The floor collapses beneath Lara in the next interactive movie. Press the appropriate buttons to save her.
(PS2 players - The first icon that appears means that you need to use the left analog stick. The Up arrow that appears along with the icon means that you need to move the left analog stick upwards.
PC players - The last icon that appears is the Right arrow.)
(Note: Many people encouter problems with this movie. Sometimes, you need to use the left analog stick and move it to the direction the arrow shows. Note, however, that you need to press each button as soon as it appears, because you have less than two seconds.)
The ball puzzle - [Checkpoint] There are three pressure plates and three movable balls: one on the ground, one on a ledge above and another one to the left of the starting position, where you need to use the Grapple to throw it down (as shown here). Back up a bit and use the Grapple to throw the ball. Push the two balls to the left and right plates (at least start with the right one). Placing each ball, the corresponding statue on the left and right open, revealing some ladders.
You cannot reach the left ladders, so go to the right. Climb up either ladder and jump to grab the ledge in the middle. Then jump to grab the ledge above (which is the statue's mouth). Jump to grab the ledge above (the statue's head) and jump to grab either ladder. Then climb to the top. Push the third ball below. Carefully make your way down and push the ball to the middle plate.
The cut scene shows a tomb rising and a door opening. Lara approaches the tomb and says it is the queen's shaman. It is a dais with a sword on it and in this case it is Viracocha's staff. Alister asks if it is the same that Lara saw in Tiwanaku and she says that there is more than one dais, but possible yes. Zip, comparing the stories of King Arthur and Tiwanaku's Queen, says that in this case the shaman would be Merlin and the staff whatever King Arthur's sword was called. Alister says that it is a coincidence.
Climb up either ladder close to the door that opened.
The cut scene shows Lara going through the door and approaching a sword. Lara watches Queen's statue above and says that she is beautiful. Lara asks Zip if he sees something familiar on the sword and he says that this is what Rutland was holding. This one, though, is a ceremonial copy. Lara finds a part of the swrord that has broken off. Lara has seen this before at Waseda University in Japan. The piece, however, is not there anymore, because it was stolen by Shogo Takamoto. While Lara takes the piece and leaves, she asks Zip to arrange a meeting with Takamoto. Zip, however, asks her not to deal with Yakuza (Japanese mafia). Lara wants the piece and insists on this meeting. Zip will take care of that and he also tells her that he had a call from Anaya. He patches her though and she tells Lara that the bastrards from town are there and are coming down after Lara. This is a tomb and Lara will make them feel at home.
Going back to Anaya - [Checkpoint] After the cut scene, exit but do not drop down. Climb on the ledge on the right and jump to grab the upper one. Pull up and jump to grab the ladder. Then climb to the top. Go to the left and jump to the stone ledge. Jump to grab the narrow ledge and shimmy left around the corner. When you reach the destoyed part of the ledge, jump to grab the next one. Do the same for the next broken ledge. Shimmy left and release to grab the three ledges below. Then drop to the ground.
Jump to grab the rope, and climb up a bit. There are two stone ledges ahead. The left one is quite destroyed, but aim for the narrow ledge above it (as shown in this screenshot). Swing and jump to grab it. Shimmy to the left until you reach the collapsed part. Jump to the next ledge and keep shimming left. Pull into the opening and go up the passage on the right where you will find a movable ball. Push it and it will roll down. It will break the wall and end to the ground. Carefully make you way down and push the ball on the middle pressure plate. The tomb will rise more and reveal the Gold Statue (1/1). Get it and make your way back to the rope, the same way as you did before.
Swing and this time jump to the ledge on the right. Jump to the next ledge and draw weapons. Two mercenaries are waiting on the ground, so slide down and kill them. Pick up the items they dropped if you need them and exit with your weapons drawn. One more guard is waiting at the bottom of the ascent, so kill him. Slide down the slope and exit to the room with the inscription. [Checkpoint] There are three guards behind the wall. You can kill them from here then climb through the opening. Replain your health and ammo with the items the guard dropped.
Take a look around to spot the the rope. Grab it and climb almost to the top. Swing and jump to the ledge in front of the opening. [Checkpoint] Go up the ascent, climbing up the blocks. At the end, climb up the ladder. When you reach the top, look for a ledge on the left. Grab it and jump to grab the ledge above. Pull up and draw weapons. Kill the guard and pick up the items he drops (if you need them). Climb on the above ledge and grab the pole. Climb to the very top and jump to the ground.
Immediately draw weapons. The place is full of mercenaries and you can see two of them in front of you. Kill them and then take care of the rest eight. As you kill them, try to get the items they drop (Health packs, ammo and Grenades) so that you can continue the battle. When you kill them all, Lara asks Zip to tell Anaya to get under the jeep because someone is coming close to her. Once you kill the last guard, a cut scene plays.
In the cut scene, Anaya hopes that Lara found what she was looking for, because she is not coming to this place again. Lara shows her Amanda's shoe. This is what was only left. Anaya wonders why Amanda was hiding all these years, but Lara says that Amanda is not hiding, but she probably does not want to keep in touch with old friends. Or maybe she found or learned something down there that she wanted to keep to herself. Lara then asks Zip if he talked to Takamoto. Zip replies "yes", but Takamoto does not want to meet her. Nishimura (one of Lara's good friends) is having a party though and Takamoto will be there. And since he does not know that Nishimura is Lara's friend, they will meet there. Lara returns to Croft Manor, because she needs to find something nice to wear.
In the cut scene, Lara exits the elevator and reaches Nishimura's party, wearing a beautiful dress. Zips asks her what happened the last time she met with Takamoto and Lara says that he was trying to pass off forged relics from the Asuka period. Lara let him go though, so that's why now they are going to have a useful conversation.
Lara has not seen Takamoto in a long time, but he probably does not miss her after what happened the last time they spoke. So, acquiring his sword fragment will not be easy.
[Checkpoint] Zips tells Lara that he got a call from Nishimura. He is in his office and she first needs to talk to the bartender. Head forwards and down either of the stairs to reach the main area of the party. As you have noticed by now, Lara does not jog. She walks like a real lady and she cannot jump (for now). You can see the bartender on the left, and you can also see two hallways: one next to each set of stairs. The left hand hallway leads to an elevator that you cannot use now and the right one to Nishimura's office. You cannot enter, as you need to talk to the bartender first.
Talk to the bartender. Lara says that Nishimura is expecting her and the bartender says that she can find him in his office, which is at the end of the hall behind her. He will let Nishimura know that Lara has arrived. You now have to meet Nishimura in his office and meet Takamoto at the party. Go to the right hand hallway (if the entrance is to your back) and open the door to Nishimura's office.
In the cut scene Nishimura welcomes Lara and he hopes that she is enjoying his party. Lara replies in Japanese, meaning that she is enjoying it very much, although when Takamoto arrives, it may cause him inconvenience. Nishimura asks her to take care, because he is a dangerous man when his interests differ from someone esle's. Lara replies that she can be really persuasive, even with dangerous men. Nishimura is convinced, since he is dangerous too. He then asks her to enjoy the party while she can and wishes her luck. Lara then exits the office.
Head forwards.
When Lara returns back to the main area of the party, the cut scene shows the guests leaving. Mercenaries are everywhere. Lara looks around and spots Takamoto, who immediately talks to her and asks her to be brief, because he has many demands on his time. Lara gets straight into the point and he tells him she is looking for a piece - a sword fragment - that he stole from the Wesada University. Takamoto says he is not a thief and she should avoid these kind of accusations. Lara suggests to skip to the negotiations. Takamoto insists that he has no idea of what she is talking about, but Lara asks him to just name a price. Takamoto gets angry "Miss Croft! Are you deaf?", "I don't know. Let's see", she replies. She then asks him to beg for his life, like he did the last time they spoke. Takamoto orders his men to kill her. They start firing, but Lara jumps behind the bar. She takes off her pumps and tears a part of her dress, revealing the holsters. She pulls out the gun and as a mercenary approaches, she kills him.
[Checkpoint] Immediately draw weapons (you have only the Pistols with unlimited ammo) and shoot the three mercenaries. Try to pick up one of the Health Packs and Assault Rifle they drop. Take a Health Pack if you need it and use one of their gun. Four more mercenaries will come from the side hallway, so take care of them too.
When all are dead, the cut scene shows Nishimura appearing from his office. Zip asks Lara where she found the weapons and she replies that they are basic etiquette and she could never go to a party with empty hands. Nishimura tells Lara that Takamoto has most probably returned to his penthouse, but he advices her not to follow him, because his men will be waiting. Zip tells her that his lobby is a death trap and although Lara likes it, it is not a winning option. Lara, forever the adventurer, replies "If I can't go down, I'll go up". She asks Nishimura how she can get to the roof. He says from the elevator and gives her a pass card.
Although Zip does not like the idea, Lara tells him she in on her way, as Nishimura gave her the pass to the elevator. You have to get to the roof of Nishimura's building, find a way over to Takamoto's building and catch up with him. Pick up the goodies the mercenaries dropped: Grenedes, Health Packs, and ammo (if you managed to pick up the gun during the battle). Now you have available all moves. Follow the left hand hallway (if the entrance is to your back) and use the pass to enter the elevator.
In the cut scene, Lara enters the elevator. We then see her (from an outside view) going up.
On the roof - As soon as you exit the elevator, head fowards and approach the glass door. Lara and Zip talk about a bike that is locked in the room. Go to the left and through the doorway to exit to the roof of Nishimura's building. [Checkpoint] Go to the right to hear Zip talking. He says that the building across is Takamoto's. Lara says that he is likely on the top floor and that this requires some creativity. So, apart from reaching Takamoto's building, you also need to get to the top floor of it.
Draw weapons and shoot the barrel behind the grates. It will explode them and you can use the metalic pole behind. Climb up it and jump to the ledge on the right. Climb to the roof above and go to the left. Walk on the glassed part of the roof and jump to grab the topmost ledge. Enable the Accurate Aim and shoot the crate. Pick up the Bronze Buddha (1/6) and jump back down.
[Note: The Accurate Aim allows you manually aim at various objects. On the PC version it is the Z button (by default). The PS2 players need to press the right analog stick. Press it down (not move it down) and you will feel a "click". We are not aware of the other versions, but you can check the Control Configuration of the game. You will see it as either Accurate Aim or Manual Aim.]
Notice the small shimmering raised part of the glass roof. Use the Grapple to pull it back and drop through the opening. Go down the steps to reach the room with the bike. There are two more crates. The one is beneath the stairs that contains a Bronze Buddha (2/6). The other one that contains a Silver Buddha (1/4) is located exactly opposite, between the boxes that you need to move.
[Checkpoint] Get the bike (DUCATI again) and drive outside to the roof. [Checkpoint] Go to the right around the corner, where the huge blue pipes are. You need to use the ramp between the pipes and jump the bike across the road to land on the ledge. Accelerate!! The jump will be done in a movie, but you need to be prepared and press the correct buttons to save Lara. She will need to grab a rope, safely drop on the ledge and finally avoid the flaming barrels that are ready to explode.
Going to Takamoto's penthouse passing from the constructions - [Checkpoint] There are two levels of scaffolding. First go to the bottom one and jump the gap. There is a crate at the end that hides a Bronze Buddha (3/6), so use the Accurate Aim (check the Note above) and shoot it. Go back and climb to the topmost ledge (the one you started from after the cut scene). Jump to grab the horizontal pole and then jump to the scaffolding ahead. It will bend if you move to the other side, so run and quickly jump to grab the next scaffolding. Pull up.
Enable the Accurate Aim (check the Note above) and shoot the circular metalic support (as shown in this screenshot). It will break and throw the obstacle down, releasing a rope. Jump to grab the rope, swing and jump to the opposite scaffolding. Go to the end. [Checkpoint] Jump to grab the wire and Lara will slide to the ledge of the opposite building. [Checkpoint]
Turn left and use the Grapple to catch the metalic hanging ledge ahead. Pull it and release the Grabble. The scaffolding will start swinging. When it comes towards you, jump to grab it (or land on it). You can either wait for it to stop or complete the next part whlist the ledge is swinging. Run, jump at the edge and press Jump again to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering lamp above. Turn right, swing and jump to the square metal ledge. [Checkpoint] Again, you need to use the Grapple, catch the metallic hanging ledge and make it swing. Jump on it and whilst the ledge is swinging, jump to the opposite one. Use the Grapple again to catch the shimmering lamp whilst in mid-air. Turn right, swing and jump to Takamoto's building. [Checkpoint]
Takamoto's building - Three guards and two dogs will appear from the other side of the area. You can jump on the ledge with the plants in the middle. That way you will avoid the annoying bite from the dogs and if a guard approaches a flaming lamp, you can explode it and kill him. When you have killed everything that moves, pick up the goodies: Health Packs, Grenades and guns (which will count as ammo) the guards dropped.
Inside the building - Go around the corner and open the door. You can see steps that go up and down. First go down. Kick the boxes and shoot the crate that reveals a Bronze Buddha (4/6). Go back and up the next stairs. The hallway leads to a door, but wait until you get the next Buddha. Continue up the steps to reach the top ledge. Drop to the pipes and carefully walk to the left. Jump to grab the top ledge on the left. Shimmy to the very right and jump to the pipes behind. Shoot the crate and pick up the Silver Buddha (2/4). Make your way down to the hallway.
Stock Market offices - Follow the hallway and open the door to reach a room with offices, which seems to work as a stock market. [Checkpoint] Five guards will attack: three on the ground and two on the ledge next to the doorway. A sixth guard may attack a bit later if not together with the other five, so stay sharp. Pick up the Health Packs, Grenades and guns they drop if you need them. A couple of them will drop their Shotgun, but if you decide to get it, you will need to leave your gun. Go up the short stairs to reach the ledge next to the doorway. Open the left metal locker to get a Silver Buddha (3/4). Go to the office in the far left corner (if the entrance is to your back) and shoot the crate to get the Bronze Buddha (5/6).
Use the Grapple to catch the huge TV screen; pull it. Enable the Accurate Aim (see the Note above) and shoot the two metal supports that hold the screen (as shown in this screenshot). If you cannot catch the screen or shoot the metal supports, jump on the office in front of the screen. The latter will fall down, revealing a room behind. Draw weapons and kill the two guards. You may be able to kill one of them from here. Otherwise, grab the screen, pull up and finish them off. They leave a Grenade, a Health Pack and two guns (which will count as ammo). Open the door at the back.
The cut scene shows the building you just exited and it focus on a ledge at the top.
Climbing up the building - [Checkpoint] You need to reach that ledge, climbing up the building. Grab the pole on the left (if the entrance is to your back) and climb up. Jump to grab the ledge with the air condition, shimmy to the right around the corner and jump to grab the ledge above. Pull up. Turn left and use the Grapple to catch the support of the sign; pull it down. Jump to grab it and pull up. Go to the other side and jump to grab the next ledge; pull up. Climb up the ladder to reach the ledge above. [Checkpoint] Again, use the Grapple to rotate the next support of the sign. Jump to grab the pole, then the ledge ahead; pull up. Grab the vertical pole, climb up it and jump to the topmost ledge behind you.
Jump to grab the thin pole on the right. Climb up and jump to grab the horizontal pole of the ledge above the one you were standing on before. Lara's weight will rotate it. Turn around, swing and jump to grab the previous pole. Climb up and jump to the ledge that you rotated before. This ledge will bend backwards (to its initial position) if you stand on the other side. So, run and quickly jump to the square ledge ahead. [Checkpoint]
You will need to grab the pole ahead, climb to the top and use some horizontal poles. They collapse after a few seconds, so you need to be quick. Jump to grab the pole and climb up. It will start falling when you reach the top. Quickly jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and use the other three poles quickly to reach the balcony which is the top of Takamoto's building.
Waiting room - Open the door to the waiting room (?) and draw weapons. [Checkpoint] Three guards are waiting at the bottom of the stairs, so kill them from here. A fourth one appears in a while, so wait and kill him too. Do not go down before killing those. There are two more guards that shoot from a balcony on the right, which makes your job harder. Be careful, however, because the last pair may come from behind you. You can also shoot the chandelier as you enter the area. It will fall down, hopefully killing some of the threats. Once you are done with everyone, pick up whatever you need. They leave Health Packs, Grenades and guns (which will count as ammo). One of them drops a Shotgun.
Go up the steps and enter the lounge on the left. This way gets you to the balcony, where the pair of guards were shooting from before. Shoot the crate and pick up the Bronze Buddha (6/6). Go back down the stairs and enter the room in the back left corner. Open the middle metal locker on the left to get a Silver Buddha (4/4). Exit, and go through the door at the far left. [Checkpoint]
Hallway with turret - Halfway through the hallway, Zip tells you about the turret at the end of the other hall. So, do not go there yet. Enter the control panel on the left and go to the other side. Use the button (next to fire extinguisher) to activate the sprinkler in the hall with the turret. As you can see, moving lasers that enable the turret protects the hall, so good thinking, as Zip says. You can explode the extinguisher, but it damages Lara if you are close. There is also a yellow button on the left that you can press and use the security camera which will show you a room with a hanging dragon, the waiting room you passed before and a room with three guns on a table.
Exit the office and grab the ball on the left. The deal here is to push the ball in the hallway with lasers. The turret will be activated, but if you push the ball and are behind it, the turret will hit the ball. Keep pushing the ball until you reach the end, where there are no lasers. Wait a bit and the turret will stop. Continue to the hallway with the green walls. [Checkpoint] Approach the door on the left and it will open automatically. Go through it.
In the cut scene, Takamoto appears in his office, which is located behind a glass above. He tells Lara that she should not have come here. Lara asks him to tell her about the sword. He is very upset and asks Lara why it is so fascinating about her. Lara will tell him if she takes a look at it. Takamoto replies that her persistence will be death for her.
When the cut scene ends, two doors slide and three guards start shooting. Takamoto of course left. Draw weapons and kill them. Then pick up whatever you need among the Health Packs, guns and Grenades they drop. Use the Grapple to catch the shimmering circle at the front side of the dragon that is hanging above. Back up as much as you can and pull it. The farther, the higher momentum it gets. Eventually, it will break the windows oposite. Draw weapons, beacause two guards will start shooting. Kill them both.
Climb on the box beneath the window, jump to grab the edge and pull up. [Checkpoint] Go to the right, where Takamoto appeared. Get the three Assault Rifles from the desk (they will count as ammo if you carry this gun). Pull the redish movale box out of the office and push it through the broken windows. It will fall down and break. Drop down and pick up the Gold Buddha (1/1). Climb back up and push the button to call the elevator. Get into.
The cut scene shows Lara inside the elevator. When she exits, she takes a look around. Takamoto appears, holding the sword fragment, and says that she disrespected him, broke into his house and killed his men. Lara wants what he possesses, but he will not let her take it that easily.
Destroying Takamoto - [Checkpoint] It is obvious that the sword gives power to its possessor. Takamoto will use it to kill you, because the sword throws a green harmful light that takes some of your health when it hits you. Apart from him, there are four turrets that start shooting at you. Takamoto is standing on the ledge above, so do not stay on the ground. Go behind one of the statues, grab the pole, climb up and jump to the ledge, where Takamoto is standing and the turrets cannot spot you. Use a pole that is opposite him.
Stay away from him. The farther, the better. Position Lara behind one of the statues and keep your weapons drawn. The green light cannot hit you if you stay behind the statue. Make sure you stay in the middle, where the part of the statue is higher (as shown in this screenshot). When Takamoto stops using the sword, and whilst having your weapons drawn, reveal yourself and shoot him. When you see him using the sword, go hide again behind the statue. Sometimes the light hits you, because Takamoto is not exactly opposite you. If he is a bit diagonally opposite, every time he throws the light, run forwards and Lara will grab the ledge. That way, the light cannot hit you (if you hang behind the statue). If he moves to a statue next to you, move behind another statue and stay opposite him. You can see Takamoto's life at the top right corner of your screen.
Alternative method - The above procedure takes some time, which is not helpful at all if you play in Time Trial mode. Here is another quicker strategy: When Takamoto fires his bolts, they come either high or low. If they are high, you need to Crouch to avoid them. If they are low, you need to Jump over them. As soon as you climb on the ledge where Takamoto is, run after him. As you approach him, avoid his bolts, by either jumping over or rolling beneath them. Do not approach him much, because you will probably not have time to avoid his bolts. Stay 10ft. (about 3 meters) away from him and jump over crouch beneath the bolts. Be careful, however, because Takamoto will probably fire vertical bolts that you will need to avoid by side-jumping. Soon, Takamoto will stop and need a couple of moments in order to start firing his bolts again, which is a really helpful time to start shooting at him. If you have a powerful weapon with you, he will lose about one third of his health. Repeat this procedure once or twice, and he will go down after one minute or so. (Thanks to Mona Sax for this method.)
When Takamoto dies, the cut scene shows Lara getting the sword fragment. Alister is suprised by the sword's power. Nishimura brought a helicopter for Lara and is now waiting outside for her. Nishimura throws a ladder and Lara climbs up it. When she reaches the top and enters the helicopter, she is very relived she found him here. Nishimura asks what happened to Takamoto and where he is. Lara says it depends on whether he was naughty or nice. Zip says that he found Rutland and asks Lara is she wants to go to Ghana. Lara of course wants to go, as Africa is one of her favorites continents.
In the cut scene, Lara slides down a slope and talks to Zip. She says that there is no sign of Rutland so far. He tells her that while he was looking the map, her parents have been there and that her father worked this site before Lara was born. Lara says that this is not something peculiar; it happens occasionally.
The coordinates that Zip provided about Rutland's position are deep in Ghana rainforest. Lara is sure that he keeps the artifact close to him, so you need to find Rutland's expedition, catch him and acquire the sword fragment.
[Checkpoint] Follow the path and go down the steps.
The cut scene shows Lara reaching a cliff. The view is so beautiful and she says that if everyting fails, she can get into the postcard business. She uses her binoculars and sees a helicopter. Zip, judging from where the helicopter landed, tells her that they did not get from this side. Then Lara says that she better plug off some cliffs.
Jump into the water below and surface. [Checkpoint] Turn to face the mechanism on the land. There are three Rewards in the water: one on the right (Bronze Mask 1/5), one straight ahead beneath the mechanism (but you cannot get it now) and the third one on the left (Bronze Mask 2/5). You will spot them easily as they glow even if you surface.
Climb out of the water in front of the mechanism. Climb up the rock on the right, then the next one above. Jump to grab the rope on the left and Lara's weight will raise the pole that holds the stone platform. Drop down and use the Grapple to pull it down.
The cut scene shows the mechanism activating. The waterfalls open and a huge Temple is revealed. Zip is amazed. Rutland appears on a high ledge. Lara calls him down for a chat, but Rutland is not willing to go, unless Lara can shoot that far. When he leaves, Lara asks Zip that Alister should take a look at this, but he tells her that only him and her are for now, since Alister went to find out where the original pieces of the sword came from.
(Note: At this pont you can choose between two shorcuts, which are very helpful for the Time Trial. If you decide to do either, you will skip the first part of the level, which includes the Area with wheels, the Puzzle area with the blocked water and the Passages with traps. Either shortcut will take you directly to the part after dealing with the huge rolling ball. Click for the First or Second one.)
Inside the Temple - Before entering the Temple, jump into the water and get the Silver Mask (1/4) beneath the mechanism (the one you could not get before). Then climb out of the water and enter the Temple. [Checkpoint] Follow the passage and go down the steps. You reach a pool. The part that is closest to you has a current that pushes you back (to your side) and the other half that pushes you forward (to the opposite side, where you have to go). Use the Grapple, catch the raft and pull it to your side. Jump on it, jump to grab the rope and jump forwards. It does not matter if you do not grab the second rope, because you will fall to the part of the pool where the current pushes you forward, to the other side. If you fall in the pool, climb out of the water.
Continue through the passage. Lara says she has seen this area before in her father's sketchbook. So, he has been here. Go up the steps and draw weapons. A guard is waiting beyond the doorway, so kill him. Go around to the left and jump over the archaeological pole. Step on the pressure pad to open a door at the end of the hallway. Once you step off, the door will start closing, so you need to be quick. Run, jump over the first achaeological pole, keep running and press the Crouch Roll button to perform a low somersault and pass beneath the second pole. Repeat the somersault if necessary to pass through the door. [Checkpoint]
Area with wheels - This is Rutland's expedition. There are three guards beyond, plus two more on the ledge ahead. Kill them and be prepared for three more that will appear through a door. You can explode the barrel beneath the ledge and make the last pair of guards a history quicker. [Checkpoint] Once you are done, pick up the items you need that the guards dropped: Health Packs, Grenades and guns (which will count as ammo). Go to the far right of the area (if the entrance is to your back) and climb on the stone ledge. Pick up the Bronze Mask (3/5) and go to the left. You can either use the big gun that one of the guards was using before and shoot the pillar on the left or grab the rope and swing towards the pillar to throw it down (shown in this screenshot).
The cut scene shows the pillar dropping down. This allows the wheel start turning around. This activates the archaeological poles behind the door you came from. The camera also shows the second wheel of the room, which is still, and some deactivated archaeological poles.
You need to grab one of the poles of the turning wheel. You can use the nearby rope and grap the pole, but if you cannot do that, you can do it from the ground. Approach the wheel and wait for a pole to come down. When you grab it, wait until it moves up, swing and jump to grab the other rope (on the other side). Swing and jump to the ledge. Turn right and jump to the metalic hanging ledge. Use the Grapple to catch the broken pillar beyond on the left. Pull yourself close to it. The doorway on the left is blocked by the archaeological poles, so jump to grab the rope. Swing and jump to grab the first pole of the still wheel. Jump to grab the second pole and finally jump to grab the ladder. Climb to the top.
Turn around and go to the other side. [Checkpoint] Climb up the second ladder and jump to grab the crevice in the wall on the left. Jump to grab the above crevice and traverse to the left around the corner. Jump to grab the bars above. Lara says that this channel leads directly down to the wheel and Zip says that the wheel needs a couple of thousands gallons of water. Lara says that it is not done... yet. Climb to the top and continue ahead. [Checkpoint] A jaguar is lurking in the next area, so either kill it from above or totally ignore it.
Area with blocked pool - Turn to face the way you came and go to the far left. Climb on the broken stairs and continue around to the right and up the steps. Go down the next steps and pick up the Bronze Mask (4/5) from behind the rock. Climb on this rock, using some stones at the back (in the corner). You can see two hanging boxes, where the one is lower than the other. From the rock, jump to grab the higher box. Lara's weight will lower the box and raise the other one. When the second box is a bit higher than the first one, jump to it, then run and jump to grab the ladder ahead. Climb to the top and continue ahead. [Checkpoint]
The cut scene shows a pool, a stone door that blocks the water and a mechanism that operates the door.
Go to the other side of the ledge and jump into the water. There is a low ledge here, where you can climb out (as shown in this screenshot). Do that, jump on the broken stone stairs and pick up the Silver Mask (2/4). Then jump into the water again.
You need to go the ledge on the left (if the place where you got the Mask is to your back), but you cannot reach it from the water. Swim through the opening to reach the other part of the pool and locate the raft on the right. Climb on it and use the Grapple to catch the shimmering pillar. Pull yourself close to it and release the Grapple. The current will push you through the opening, to the part of the pool you were before. Using the Grapple again, catch the other shimmering pillar and pull yourself close to it, which is next to the high ledge. Jump on it.
Climb up the long ladder. Again, there are two hanging boxes that switch height when Lara drops on the them. Jump to the first box and when you see the second one reaching the same level, jump (and possibly grab) on it. Quickly jump to grab the ledge ahead before the box lowers. [Checkpoint] Go to the other side of the ledge and pick up the Bronze Mask (5/5) from the left behind the pillar. Run, jump and press Jump again in midair to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering sign above. Swing and jump to the opposite ledge.
Jump to grab the crevice of the pillar and travesre around the corner. Release to grab the crevice below. Traverse around the corner and jump to grab the crevice in the wall. Traverse a bit to the right and jump to grab the next crevice. Jump to grab the crevice above, traverse to the right and jump to grab the ledge. Pull up. [Checkpoint]
The water puzzle - Step on the pressure plate on the left. It will activate the nearby mechanism that rotates the square ledge and drops a huge box on the ground. This means that if you accidetally fall down, you will not have to take the long route back. Just climb on the box and use the crevices in the wall. Step off the pressure pad and let the mechanism rotate the ledge back to its initial position. Jump on the ledge and then jump to the platform with the statue.
Examine the statue and notice the metalic manacles that hold its hands. When you stepped on the pressure plate, the left manacle released the hand. When you stepped off, the manacle closed again. Keep that in mind. Also, notice the shiny star on the statue's chest. If you use the Grapple, it will catch the star, but you cannot pull it, because the statues hands are blocked.
So, jump to the next square ledge, then to the platform with the movable box. Push pull the box on the pressure plate to open the right manacle and release the statue's hand. Make your way back to the first pressure plate . Step on it and allow it to fully open the other manacle and rotate the square ledge twice. Remember: when you step off, the manacle starts closing and the square ledge rotates twice. Step off, allow the ledge partly rotate and jump. Until you land on it, it will have reach the horizontal position. Quickly jump to the ledge with the statue, back up a bit and use the Grapple to catch the star on its chest. Pull the statue's hands before the manacle closes.
The cut scene shows the stone door open, allowing a lot of water to flow through the passage you came from and the channel that leads to the wheel below.
[Checkpoint] Jump into the water and climb into the passage you came from. Climb down the grating and use the crevices in the wall as before to reach the ladder. Climb to the bottom and go to the other ladder. [Checkpoint] Climb it down.
The cut scene shows the water falling down. This enabled the wheel, which activated the second archaeological poles.
Wait for a pole of the now turning wheel to come close to you. Make sure you have climbed to the bottom of the ladder or you will not be able to spot the pole. Jump to grab it and wait for the wheel to turn a bit. Swing and jump to grab the rope, then to the ledge ahead. If you accidentally fall down, you can grab one of the wheel's poles from the ground.
Passages with traps - [Checkpoint] The doorway that was blocked by the archaeological poles is still blocked, but this time the poles are moving, having deadly spikes. So, you need to avoid even touching them. There are three sets of them and the procedure is the same: When you see them opening, run past them.
When you clear this trap, you can see another one ahead. This contains rotating blades that come from the walls alongside. Use the movable stone block on the left to leave instact. Push it to the passage, sticking the either left or right wall. The blades will hit the stone and you can leave intact. Be careful at the end! If you push the block to the very end of the trap, the blades may catch you from behind. To avoid that, push it almost to the end (as shown in this screenshot), climb on it and jump down to the other side.
If you are up for a challenge, you can clear this trap without using the stone block. There are two sets of blades - one above the other, moving in opposite directions from each other when adjacent. When the highest blades come towards you, run and roll beneath them. Then jump over the lowest blades that are coming to your side. Or, when the lowest blades come towards you, jump over them. Then roll beneath the highest blades that are coming to your side. Follow the passage to meet a same trap. You can find a movable stone block in the wall opposite the trap. Follow the same procedure to get past it.
Rolling ball Outside the Temple - Go through the doorway and follow the hallway. [Checkpoint] Go up the stairs and down the next ones. When you approach the poles ahead, a huge stone ball rolls from behind. Immediately, jump over the pole on the right, run diagonally to the left and perform a low somersault beneath the second pole. An alternate way to stay in front of the boulder is as follows: although it looks like the poles are too low to roll under, once you regain control of Lara, run straight forward and roll beneath both poles. Press the Roll button a couple of steps before reaching the pole. If you stick to the pole and then roll, you will lose precious time (thanks to Brian C for this tip). Keep running and jump over the spiked pit.
The cut scene shows Lara exiting through the doorway and flipping to the side, avoiding the stone ball that crashes the wall. It then rolls off the ledge, break a stone and end in the water.
[Checkpoint] When this is over, Alister talks to Lara (he came back). He tells her that he extrapolated the markings on the artifact to get a sense of what the entire pattern would look like, but before he finishes, a problem appears and the connection is lost. Go to the left and climb down the ladder. Turn around and pick up the Silver Mask (3/4). Then climb up the ladder to the top. If you accidentally fall to the water, you can find a greenish ledge where you can climb out. Then climb on the stone blocks to reach the ledge at the bottom of the ladder (as shown in this screenshot).
Jump to grab the pole, swing and jump to grab the crevice in the pillar ahead. Traverse around to the left and jump to grab the above ledge. Traverse around to the left and jump to grab the ledge behind. Shimmy to the end of the ledge and jump to grab the ledge above. A rock is ready to fall down and kill you, so quickly jump to grab the pole behind. If you cannot do that, you can jump to the left and land into the water, but you will have to take the long route back. Swing on the pole, jump to grab the second one and jump to grab the narrow ledge ahead. Pull up and climb on the platform above. [Checkpoint] Lara talks to Zip and Alister, but no one listens.
Jump to the hanging metal ledge. Lara's weight will lower it, so run and jump to grab the ledge ahead. Pull up and jump to the next hanging ledge, then to the ledge below. [Checkpoint] Lara tries to communicate with Zip and Alister but no one replies. Make a U turn to the right and jump to grab the pole. Swing and jump to grab the stone ledge ahead. Traverse to the left around the corner and jump to grab the ledge above. The rock above will fall in a while, so quickly jump to grab the pole on the right. Jump to the next pole, turn around, swing and jump to grab the next one that is a bit higher. Swing and jump to grab the crevice of the pillar. Quickly treverse to the left around the corner, because another rock is falling from above. Jump to grab the ledge above, traverse around the corner and jump to the ledge behind you.
Inside the Temple again - Go through the doorway to enter the Temple again. [Checkpoint] Follow the hallway.
In the cut scene, Lara finds something that looks likes a jewel. She recognizes it. It was her mother's. Her father had given it to her. Lara tries to communicate again with Zip with no luck.
Continue down the stairs to the dark hallway. Turn on the PLS to see clearly. Be careful of the spiked pit. Jump and use the Grapple to catch the shimmering sign above. Swing and jump to the opposite side. Do the same for the next spiked pit. Then go through the doorway. Draw weapons and kill the two guards, plus a third one that will join in a while. If you used a Grenade to the guards that were standing on the bridge or the huge stone above to kill them and cut the bridge down, you can use your Grapple and catch the shimmering sign above. The guards leave Health Packs, Grenades and guns (if they did not fall into the pit). Pick up what you need and continue to the end of the hallway. Go through the doorway. [Checkpoint]
(Note - In Hard mode, the bridge may be already down and only one guard appears.)
Area with big waterfall and bridge - Turn right and run to grab the pole. Swing and grab the next one. Then grab the crevice of the pillar. Jump to grab the pillar on the left and drop down. From this position, use a Grenade to explode the brown door (which is shown in this screenshot). Go inside and pick up the Silver Mask (4/4).
[Note: If you do not have a Grenade at this point, do not worry. One of the guards that follow drops a Grenade Launcher that you can use and explode the door to the Silver Mask. You just need to go back and get it. If this guard and his gun drop into the pit and you cannot get the Grenade Launcher, you can use one of the barrels at the top of the waterfall. Kick the one that is closest to the poles you came from (as shown in this screenshot) and will fall into the channel. It will drop on the ledge with the Mask, exploding the entrance. Thanks to Rook for this tip.]
Grab the pillar again and jump to grab the one you came from. Jump to grab the above crevice and traverse around the corner. Jump to grab the next two crevices above, traverse around to the right and jump to grab the crevice above. Jump to grab the pole behind you, swing and jump to grab the next pole. Finally jump to the ledge next to the stream.
Do not jump into the water, because it will take you down and kill you. There are seven guards beyond, so draw weapons. The one that has different clothes, carry a Grenade Launcher, so make sure you kill him quickly. Once they are dead, cross the bridge and from what they dropped, pick up whatever you need. If the bridge has been cut down, you have to use the Grapple and catch the shimmering signs above. Go through the opening. [Checkpoint] A jaguar attacks, so kill it. Make sure you have enough health and ammo (collect as many as possible from the guards you killed), because you will meet Rutland in a while. Notice the big brown door ahead. You will open it in a minute.
Climb on the broken stairs on the left. Go up a bit and jump to grab the rope, because a ball rolls from above. A second ball will roll, so avoid it too. Then jump the other stairs. A ball will roll from above, so jump back to grab the rope or enter the alcove to the side of the stairs (thank to yavuska for the tip). When it has rolled, jump back to the stairs. Go to the top and step on the pressure plate to open the door. Do not go through it yet. Go down and through the brown door. Pick up the Gold Mask (1/1) and make your way back up again. Step on the pressure plate to open the door and go through it.
In the cut scene, Rutland is waiting for Lara. He assumes she is looking for the Ghalali Key, but Lara does not know what he is talking about. Rutland says that it is what puts the sword back together and according to Amanda's research, the Key is here. Lara is wondering what he knows about Amanda and asks him where she is. He does not reply and just says that Amanda thinks that Lara's father found the Key. Lara still does not know what he is talking about. She asks him to tell her about the sword segment that he is holding. He says he spent some time with it and he has learned a couple of things. He is ready to show her what the sword can do. He jumps on a ledge and we can see that the sword segment reveals (once again) a green light.
Fighting Rutland - [Checkpoint] The first thing you should know is that you cannot destroy Rutland immediately. He manages to regenerate his health by jumping on the four ledges that have a stone on it. So, your first priority is to destroy the ledges, therefore the stones that Rutland regenerates his health from. Until you do that, draw your Pistols with unlimited ammo.
Shoot Rutland, jumping around to avoid his attacks and the grenades he throws. Soon, he will jump on a ledge to regenerate his health. Rutland has to jump on the ledge at least once, so that you can start destroying the four stones (you can destroy them earlier, but the Interact button does not appear if you do not approach each ledge). Each stone's power is at the base. When the game indicates, press the Interact button to smash the sheath of the stone. Then use the Grapple to pull it down. When Rutland is down, shoot him. The Grenades work fine, but wait until you have destroyed all stones. When you do that, start shooting Rutland until his health drops to zero.
Defeating Rutland in just a few seconds - This strategy was found by Treeble and is very effective!! You can watch the following description in this video. When the battle begins, Rutland will jump off a ledge and come after you. Shoot him to bring his health down and make him jump on a ledge. With your weapon still drawn, wait for him to jump off the ledge, but make sure you have locked your target on him. Whilst he is in midair, throw a Grenade. It will explode when Rutland lands on the ground. This will make him go flying up, so he will not come after you. Still with the aim locked, throw as many Grenades as you have timing a chain. Shooting at the same time will help your job.
When you destroy Rutland, the cut scene shows Lara approaching him and picking up the sword segment. She tells him that she is not his enemy. She puts the pieces together and says that they were not broken apart, but they were designed to sepatare and reattach. She asks Rutland if the Galali Key does that and he replies that it does. Lara sks him where these came from. The Crusades? King Arthur? Rutland is not intereted in history. Lara then suggests him to stay here and consider the future without her in it, because he will not enjoy seeing her again. As Lara leaves, Rutland says that her father might not have found the Galali Key, but Amanada does not know that, who is in Lara's mansion now.
In the next cut scene Lara rides the bike. Zip talks to her and she is glad to hear him. He tells her that Amanda came to her home and Lara says she is going there. Alister tells her that they are fine and that Amanda went for another piece of the sword. Lara asks where and Alister tells her in Kazakhstan. He found a photo that matches the pieces she has. She then asks him to make a search about the Ghalali Key. Lara leaves for Kazakhstan.
In the cut scene, Lara slides down a slope and informs Alister that she is at the base. Alister says he was right; it was a secret Soviet project from the 50's called "Carbonek". The laboratory was stydying an ancient sword fragment, but a mysterious disaster brought the KGB down and they erased everything for history. Lara uses her Binoculars and says that there seems to be trouble below whilst she is watching Rutland's men killing the Kazahks. Alister says that they are probably Amanada's men, since she is behind all this. He also tells her that the laboratory is somehow connected to the militay base, but he does not know how. If Lara could find the command center, they could get a better idea.
(Bug warning: Two annoying bugs can be activated later. One of them has a tendency to appear on the PS2 and XBOX versions, which may make you unable to finish the level. You are advised to save your game before AND after using the bike. No more spoilers will be mentioned here, so be careful.)
The sword fragment was taken to a secret Soviet laboratory decades ago, a facility rumored to study the paranormal. While Lara is en route, Alister is going to try to confirm the facts of the story. You need to find Kazakh army base command center, find and enter the abandoned Soviet laboratory and acquire the ancient sword fragment.
[Checkpoint] Slide down the slope ahead. Lara will swan dive, but you need to press the correct button (as the game shows). Lara will use the parachute and land safely on the roof of a building. [Checkpoint] You can see some guards patrolling on the ground and at this point, there are eleven of them. Grab the big gun and kill them all. You can also explode the various barrels if a guard is close to it to make your job easier. The guards drop Health Packs, Grenades and guns (which will count as ammo), but wait before going down.
Assuming you are still on the roof with the big gun, climb on the next roof on the right and jump to grab the pole of the flag. From there jump to grab the crate and climb on the roof (as shown in this screenshot). Shoot the crate and pick up the Bronze Reward (1/5). Five more guards are patrolling below, so kill them from here or jump down.
(Note about the Bronze Reward: If you are on the ground, you can reach the roof with the big gun, by using the crates around it. Or, as you face the building with the windows, where the guards were shooting from, go to the right and climb on the box next to the building (as shown here). Turn to face the building with the crate at the top. Enable the Accurate Aim and shoot the crate. Use the Grapple to get the Reward.)
Enter the building with the windows, turn right and enter the small storage room on the left. Pick up the Bronze Reward (2/5) from the left and exit. Climb up the ladder opposite the entrance to reach the roof of the building. [Checkpoint] Continue ahead and kill the guard on the opposite roof. Jump to grab that roof and pull up. Pick up the items he dropped if you need them and slide down the ramp on the left. You can use the wire and slide down, but this will get you on the ground, making your job harder. Kill the four guards on the ground. You can explode the barrels if a guard is close, and make sure you kill quickly the guard that uses the big gun, because it takes more health.
Drop to the ground (if you are not there) and locate the building with the cross (it is the medical center). Exactly opposite is a fenced area with a crate and a barrel. The door will not open, so go around and shoot the crates next to the fence (see this screenshot to get oriented). There is a missing part of the fence, so get into and shoot the barrel to explode the entrance and the crate (in the opposite scenario, shoot the crate by yourself). Pick up the Silver Reward (1/3) and exit. Enter the medical center.
In the cut scene, Lara breaks into the building and sees a guard with two Kazahk hostages. Lara shouts at them to get down and she kills the guard. They ask her if she is American and Lara replies that she is British and they (she and the two men) share an enemy. Lara asks where the command center is. The two men talk in Russian. The one does not want to tell her, but the other says that if she opens the gate with the code and not the Key, they might find them and come to rescue them. So, they tell her that the command center is through the opposite gate and the code is K1879. Lara speaks in Russian too, meaning that she thanks them and asks them to wish her luck.
[Checkpoint] If the guard left his gun, get it to replain your ammo if you want. Then exit the building. Alister talks to Lara and says that although he did not understand what they were talking about, he thinks that the gate they mentioned is up ahead. Draw weapons, because five more guards are waiting outside. Kill them and pick up what you want from the items they drop. If you want, after exiting the medical center, go to the right and climb on the crate, then on the roof of the building you came from (at the bottom of the ramp you slid). You can kill the guards from there, backing up for cover. Go to the gate and use the keypad to open the door.
Command center - There are two guards at the top of the ascent that throw some barrels that explode. So, go through the gate. [Checkpoint] Go up the ascent from the either left or right side and kill the guards. Then enter the building. This is the command center you are looking for.
In the cut scene, Lara checks some satellite photos from a computer. Alister tells her that they have many of them and there is nothing there. Lara says that the laboratory would not be visible from above, so they need maps. Lara finds the laboratory from the computer and Alister says that it is quite far. She is not willing to walk and she mentions that there is a military train that runs past the lab. She says it looks like Amanda's boys are ahead of her, so she better run. Alister says that the train is about to roll and Lara had better run fast.
Your objective now is to catch up with the train that runs past the abandoned Soviet laboratory. Climb up the ladder close to the control panel to reach the roof of the building. [Checkpoint] Jump to grab the ladder of the tower and climb to the top. Grab the wire and slide to the roof on the other side of the area. Grab the wire there to slide to the roof of the opposite building (which is close to the train). Draw weapons, drop down and shoot the three guards around. When the camera shows the tunnel of the train and Alister says that the train is leaving, you need to hurry a bit. The door of the tunnel will open and two guards will start shooting from there. Approach the door and Lara will tell Alister to forget the train, as she has a better idea. She refers to the bike which is at the entrance, so ride it and drive into the tunnel.
BIKE - Parallel to the train
(Bug note: Save your game before using the bike. Many people have encountered an annoying bug, where after entering the first side-road, they accidentally fell off the cliff and the checkpoint that loaded had them is the air, falling down to their death. We have not found a solution for this bug, so you need to load a previous saved game. If you are a console player and have not a saved game to load, you will have to start the game from the beginning. The PC players can download a saved game.)
[Checkpoint] You will have to drive parallel to the train. Like the previous time, you will meet some guards on their bikes, so you need to kill them. Again, the quicker you kill them, the sooner this part ends. Avoid the obstacles on your way (like rocks and trees) and try to collect the Health Packs. When you start, you are close to the train. Do not stay there. Drive to the middle part of the area, where the guards appear. Do not forget the barrels that you can explode.
This time, the trip is longer and your target is to catch up with the train. You will enter a side-road, which means you will not be able to see the train. [Checkpoint] When you reach the train again, [Checkpoint] guards will also appear on cars. The second time you reach the side-road [Checkpoint], you will have to jump over the train twice (using some bridges) and finally drive pararrel to the train. You have to jump on the train's flat car and keep driving on it until you get the cut scene.
In the cut scene, Lara dismounts and climbs on the front car of the train. As she approaches to the front, a guard shoots her from the engine car, but he misses. The train hits a barrel that explodes, but Lara crouches and survives. Her jacket catches fire, so she takes it off and throws it away.
ON THE TOP OF THE TRAIN/ ENTERING LABORATORY
Lara is on the top of the train. You need to press the appropriate buttons (as the game shows) and save her.
Area with burning train - [Checkpoint] Lara assumes that Amanda is here, because the electricity is on. From the starting position, use the Grapple to catch the metal beam that holds the rope and pull it to your side. Once you release it, it will return to its initial position, so jump to grab the rope. Swing and jump to the ledge ahead. Climb up the ladder on the left and jump to grab the sign on the right. Traverse to the left and jump to grab the pole. Swing and jump to grab the next pole. Jump to grab the sign beyond the train and drop down. [Checkpoint] Drop to the ground and shoot the crate in the corner to get the Bronze Reward (3/5). Then climb back up on the ledge, using the nearby crate.
Again, use the Grapple to catch the metal beam and pull it close to you. Jump to grab the rope before it moves back to its initial position. Climb up the rope, because the fire from below may catch you. Swing and jump to the ledge ahead. Shoot the opposite moving fan to break it and jump to grab the ledge beneath it. Then jump to grab the ledge above; pull up. [Checkpoint] (If you accidentally fall down, you can use the movable crate to climb back to ledge.)
Going through the vents - Go through the circular opening and follow the hallway. Lara comments that it is cold here. Slide down the slope and jump over the electrified wires (press and hold Jump to jump higher and farther). Crouch beneath the next wires and pick up the Health Pack at the end of the hallway if you need it. [Checkpoint] There is a dead man behind the bars and a piece of paper close to him. Alister wonders what this man is doing here and Lara says that the scientist was trapped here since the 50's and he freezed to death. Pick up the paper. "The experiment has gone wrong. The KGB sealed the facility", Lara reads and assumes that he tried to escape from the vents, but got trapped.
Go through the opening and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to grab the rope. Climb up a bit, swing and jump to grab or land on the ledge ahead. If you accidentally fall down, you can find a crate that you can use to climb to the top, then try again. Slide down the slope, jumping over the electrified wires. Follow the hallway to the right and crouch beneath the wires. Shoot the moving fan and follow the hallway around to the left. Before sliding down, shoot the moving fan at the bottom of the slope. Then slide down, jumping over the wires. Jump over the next wires and crouch beneath the ones beyond.
Slide down the slope on the right, jumping over the wires. Jump at the edge to grab the horizontal pole and release to drop down. Shoot the crate and pick up the Bronze Reward (4/5). Then climb on the box on the other side, turn to face the way you came and with a double jump, use the Grapple to catch the shimmering ball above. Turn around, swing and jump to grab the ledge. Pull up, shoot the moving fan at the bottom of the slope and slide down. Drop into the next room. [Checkpoint]
Room with generator - You just entered the abandoned Soviet lab you are looking for. Lara says that Amanda was here, since the lights are on. Alister tells her that she came in through the main door and she has probably not been here yet, because there is a generator at the other side of the room and she could have started it. So, you now need to turn on the generator in order to power up the lab. If you approach the right hand side of the room (where the big red sign is) Lara will say that it is a map of the facility.
Turn to face the duct you came from and locate the metal boxes on the left. Climb on them and shimmy to the left around the corner (as shown in this screenshot). Pull up and go to the left. Use the Grapple to catch the padlock of the gate and pull it to open it. Jump through the gate and shoot the crate to get the Silver Reward (2/3). Then drop back down.
Climb on the metal box that is on the right of the opening you came from (right if you face it). Jump to grab the box on the left and then jump to grab the letal ledge. Pull up and jump to the ledge ahead. Go to the right, and from the part that the railing is missing, jump to grab the rope.
Lara's weight will lower the pipe and the cut scene will show fuel dropping from the pipe and filling up the generator.
Go to the front side of the generator and use the Grapple to catch the ball. Pull it to activate the generator that will light up the map and unlock the door of the room. Go to that door and it will open automatically.
Hallways with green coolant - [Checkpoint] Zip assumes that the green smoke ahead is a coolant, but Lara is not willing to find out. In any case, this thing is harmful, so avoid it. Jump to grab the grating on the right and jump to grab the pole. Swing and jump to the ledge ahead. Jump to grab the next pole, swing and jump to grab the rope. Swing and jump to the ledge ahead. Go to the right and jump to the next square ledge. Jump up to grab the ledge above and pull up.
You need to grab the pipe on the right and shimmy to the other side, but there is an electrical light that goes across the pipe. So, wait for it to come to your side and when it starts leaving, grab the pipe. Travesre to the left until you reach the end (use the Interact button to go faster). Before the light comes, jump to grab the box behind you. Traverse around the corner and release to grab the grating below. Then jump to grab the grating behind you and drop down.
There is an electrical light that goes across the horizontal pole, so you need to follow the same procedure. Grab the pole when the light leaves and traverse to the other side. Drop to the ledge, then to the ground. The door opens automatically. Go through it.
The cut scene shows Lara entering a room, where Amanda is examining a huge gun. Lara calls her, but Amanda says that she is busy. Lara notices that Amanda changed her look and realizes that she was the one who was with Rutland in Bolivia. Amanda says she goes to many places that Lara cannot conveive of and that this time Lara was the one who was left behind. Amanda crosses a metal bridge and goes to the other side of the room, whilst Lara apologizes to her, saying that if she knew that Amanda was alive, she could have done anything to save her. Amanda does not care about that any more. She got over it a long time ago. She goes through a door and orders the guard not to let Lara follow her. Lara is crossing the bridge when the guard throws a grenade. Lara jumps back and the bridge collapses after the explosion. Alister tells Lara that this big gun might help her.
Area with electric Tower and big gun - [Checkpoint] If you examine and use this gun, you will see that it works now, but not for too long, because it needs more power. So, leave it for now.
(Note - You can take a shortcut here and skip a big part of the level, missing of course many kills, pick-ups and Rewards. This shortcut will take you to the opposite side, beyond the hanging metal ledge. If you want to try it, check this page.)
There are three guards below. Slide down the ramp on the right and take care of them. Pick up the items they drop if you need them. Facing the tower, go to the right and pick up the Bronze Reward (5/5).
Now you need to go up. Go to the left of the Tower and locate the vertical pole with the electrical light that goes accross it. Grab the pole when the light has moved upwards and climb up. Jump to grab the ledge on the right and pull up. [Checkpoint] Then climb to the ledge above. Turn around and jump to grab the horizontal pole. Swing and jump to grab the next pole. Then jump to grab the rope. Turn left, swing and jump to grab the vertical pipe. You need to grab the pipe with the moving light, so wait for it to move upwards and jump to grab the pipe. Climb to the top and jump to the grating. Go to the left and drop down. [Checkpoint]
There is a Health Pack next to the dead scientist if you need it and a piece of paper. Pick it up and Lara will read it. "They funneled Tesla energy into the artifact, and there was an enormous discharge of some sort. The KGB shut down the operation, removed the core, sealed off the lab in sections, and left behind those scientists who weren't forcibly removed." Approach the cage you dropped from and shoot the barrel inside to explode the entrance. If you have problems aiming at the barrel, shoot through the opening in the grating (as shown in this screnshot). Either use the Interact button or enable the Accurate Aim. Enter and pick up the Silver Reward (3/3) from the end. Exit, follow the hallway and the door will open automatically.
Room with Control Room and Core - Follow the twisted passage with the pipes and hanging cords until you reach the green coolant. Climb on the grating and jump to grab the pole. Swing and jump to the ledge ahead. Jump to grab the pole in the doorway and release to drop into the room. [Checkpoint] There are five guards here, so kill them. Be careful, because they throw grenades. You can explode the barrels if the guards are close to make your life easier. When you are done, pick up the items they drop if you need them, including ammo, Grenades and a Health Packs.
Going to the control room - Go to the far right of the area and push pull the Core close to the ladder. Climb on it and jump to grab the ladder. Then jump to the ledge on the right.
In the cut scene, Amanda talks to Lara through her headset. Zip asks Amanda how the hell she got into this channel and Lara says that Amanda probably got a headset when she was rearranging his office. Amanda asks Lara if she knows why the Soviets called their project "Carbonek" and Lara replies that it is the castle where Lancelot sought the Holy Grail. She also says that this is not the first connection to Arthurian myth (the first was in Peru, where Lara learned about the last Queen of Tiwanaku). Amanda obviously thinks that this is not a myth. The Russians activated a power in the artifact that literal minds cannot handle. When Amanda disconnects, Lara tells Zip that Amanda is having difficulty obtaining the sword fragment and she does not want to blow up everything in the process.
Jump to grab the pole of the light and jump to the grating ahead. Turn right and jump to grab the rope. Swing and jump to grab the ledge above the orb. Traverse to the other side and jump to grab the hanging metal pole. Swing and jump to the broken grating. Jump to grab the ladder on the right. The second part of the ladder will lower, which means you can start from here if you accidentally fall down. Climb up a bit and jump to grab the grating on the right. Pull up and go to the other side. Draw weapons and shoot the barrel in the control room to smash the windows. Jump to grab the rope, swing and jump into the control room. [Checkpoint]
There is another dead scientist here with a Health Pack and a piece of paper. Lara reads it and says that at least a dozen of scientist's colleagues were killed in the experiment. The artifact converted the Tesla voltage into something else... a wave of concussive force of some kind. The scientists refused to repeat the experiment and when the KGB tried to persuade them otherwise, it got nasty and they were shut down. Pull the lever from the control panel.
The cut scene shows one of the orbs generating the Core.
To fully work, the Core must be generated by the other two orbs. Drop down and use the Grapple to move the Core across the tracks on the floor. All obstacles will be smashed by the Core, so keep pulling it. As you do it, the other orbs will throw power to the Core. Pull it close to the door that will open automatically. The Core will pass through it and through the hallway with the cords. Be careful of the coolant as you exit. [Checkpoint] Use the gratings and the pole to pass above them. The Core generated the cords, so do not pass through the blue light. [Checkpoint] Use your Grapple to catch the cord, pull it and release it. The cord will start swinging, so move when the blue light does not appear. Do the same for the next cords until you exit to the room with the Tower. [Checkpoint]
(Note: The Core slides on the track by itself. When it reaches the door that leads back to the Tower, the door is supposed to open as the Core approaches. If the door remains closed, you have to open it by yourself. Carefully approach the either left or right side of the Core, as shown in this screenshot, and the door will open. This will allow the Core slide outside.)
Go to the left side of the wooden door of the tower. [Checkpoint] Use the Grapple to open it. When the Core slides into the tower, you can release the Grapple. The Tower is activated by the electricity and some boxes are thrown around. On of them hits the door on the other side, which starts working. Carefully pass through the malfunctioned door. Enter the next room.
The cut scene shows Lara entering a control room with another dead scientist. There is a box with a shield on top in the middle of the room. Lara approaches the shield and says it is from the 10th or 11th century and it was probably recovered with the piece she is looking for. She says it resembles Launcelot's crest. She spots something that looks like a map at the back of the shield and asks Alister to have a good look and see what he can make of it. Lara assumes that the knight needed help to find his way home or this piece was not all he had. Alister asks if it has to do with the sword segment they are looking for and Lara says that it is useless without a reference point. Alister will work on it and goes offline.
There is a Health Pack (that you probably need) and a piece of paper next to the dead scientist. [Checkpoint] Lara reads it and says that a number of relics were recovered along with the artifact, but the scientist could not find anyone to help him study them. Go through the other malfunctioned door.
[Bug warning: At this point, the ramp that leads to the bottom of the Tower is no longer there. If you accidentally fall down and survive from the drop, you can make your way up again, using the poles with the electrified light. The door (close to the Tower) that used to be out of order is now partly open and you can pass through it and return to the Tesla gun. However, you may encounter a bug here (which has a tendency to appear on the PS2 and XBOX versions), where the opening is not big enough and Lara cannot pass through it. So, save your game before jumping to the hanging ledge, in case you fall down and cannot return back.
If you are stuck there and you do not have a previous saved game to load, you have a chance to leave by performing one tricky jump. First, you need to reach the top of the grating, where you got the Silver Reward (next to the Tower), as shown in this screenshot. Go to the other side. You have to jump to the metal ledge opposite the Tesla gun, but this is a tricky jump. See this screenshot to get oriented. You need to jump to the narrow ledge next to the wall, then to the metal ledge. Lara CANNOT stand on the narrow ledge (she slides down), so once you reach it, you must immediately jump to the metal ledge. This works fine, so do not give up if your first try is not successful.
Download this video and watch the process. The PC players can also download a saved game.]
Back to the area with the Tesla gun - When you return back to the room with the Tesla gun, three gurds come through the door on the opposite side. Get the gun and use it to kill them. Pull some barrels from your left and right side and throw them to the guards to explode them. Throwing the barrels against the railings is enough. You do not have to throw them on the ledge. You can also use the boxes above the guards or the metal movable boxes from your side. If you decide for the latter, do NOT use the metal box that is on the ledge (or at least leave a box on your side), because you will need it for the next Reward (see this screenshot to get oriented).
Moving the ledge for the Gold Reward - Move the hanging metal ledge to the right side, where there are no railings. Quickly start pushing the hook that holds the ledge, before it loses its momentum. You need to push the ledge even farther (as shown here), to the upper part of the cord. The screenshot shows an X. This is where the hanging ledge usually ends, but notice where the ledge is hanging from. It is important to give a momentum to the ledge, otherwise you will not be able to push it farther and it can end up really frustrating!!
If you are stuck here, try the following. First, move the hanging ledge back to the left. Do not forget: the Lock Target button pulls a metal object (the hanging ledge in our case) and the Shoot button fires electricity, which pushes the object. Move the target of the Tesla gun to the top part of the ledge, aiming the hook (as shown in this screenshot). Press and hold the Lock Target button and move the ledge to the right. When it reaches the part where the cord goes higher (as shown here), quickly start pressing repeatedly the Shoot button to push the ledge. If you do not hesitate at all, the metal hanging ledge will gain momentum and you will not have problems.
Remove the crates from the opening on your right (as shown here) and leave the gun. Go to the movable metal box and push it to the end of the ledge. Climb on it and jump to grab the opening where the boxes were. Traverse to the left and jump to grab the ledge above. Traverse to the left around the corner and drop to the grating. Turn around and jump to the hanging metal ledge you moved before. From there, jump to the next ledge. [Checkpoint] Jump to grab the pole, swing and jump into the alcove. Pick up the Gold Reward (1/1). Jump back to grab the pole, swing and jump to the ledge. Jump down to the metal ledge you moved, then to the opposite side, where the guards appeared.
Hallway with electrified poles and pipes that block your way - Go through the door that opens automatically. [Checkpoint] Climb on the grating and shoot the broken pipes in front of you. You can either shoot at the general directional of the pipes or enable the Accurate Aim. Use the Grapple to catch the shimmering mechanism on the right and move yourself to the other side of the hallway. Jump on the next grating, use the Grapple again, but crouch beneath the electrified pole whilst the grating moves to the other side. Jump on the next grating [Checkpoint] and shoot the broken pipe. Again use the Grapple to move the grating, but this time jump over the next electrified pole. Drop down [Checkpoint] and go to the right around the corner. The door opens automatically. Go through it.
The cut scene shows Lara entering a room with electrified orbs. She takes a look around and spots Amanda working in a control room above. Lara apologizes to Amanda for what happened and says that they can still work together. Amanda says that they cannot do that, because she was alone down there (to the place she was trapped); she and the artifact she has on her neck (it is the stone that she pulled out in Paraiso when the creature were chasing her and Lara). The creature appears and Amanda says that it is a little friendier than it was in Paraiso. Amanda tought the creature how to fetch. Lara gets angry, because this thing killed their friends. Amanda says that once she mastered it, it saved her life, and advices Lara to stay away from it.
Fighting the creature acquiring the sword segment - [Checkpoint] The first thing you need to know is that you cannot kill the creature. So, do not waste you ammo and time shooting at it, using either your gun or the Tesla gun in the middle of the room. After the cut scene, run around the room and use the four levers between the small electrified orbs on the walls. Every time you use a lever, a hook catches a big orb above the Tesla gun. When you pull all fours levers, the big orbs lower and the sword fragment is revealed.
Run to the Tesla gun and use it. You need to push the four big orbs towards the small electrified orbs on the walls. Every time you do that, a blue energy shield appears on both sides of the big orb, the latter of which stays to this position for a few seconds. You have to push all four big orbs and make them stay at this position at the same time. To push an orb, you need to press the Shoot button repeatedly (do not just hold it). Two or three shots are enough. Then turn and shoot (push) the next orb. If the creature gets into your way, shoot some electricity to keep it away. When all four orbs are activated (puhed) at the same time, the shield that protects the sword fragment above will shut off and you have to jump off the gun and use the Grapple to catch the sword fragment. You have to turn the camera upwards and face the fragment; otherwise, Lara will not be able to catch it with the Grapple.
When you do that, the cut scene shows Lara pulling the sword fragment with the Grapple. The glass floor beneath the gun shatters and Lara sees that Amanda is leaving. Lara jumps through the broken floor and crawls through a pipe. Lara asks Alister if he found anything about the map and he says that it leads to Cornwall.
In the cut scene, Lara meets Zip and Alister, who are waiting in the van. Zip asks Alister if he is sure about the map. Alister says that he is, although there were some nonsense about the discovery of the King Arthur's real tomb, but soon discreted, and another roadside attraction was born (meaning Professor Worth's King Arthur Museum, where they met). Lara says what they can see from this. She climbs up a pipe and enters a place that was used as King Arthur's attraction.
(Bug warning: A possible bug can be activated later in the level, when you fight with the boss. You are advised to save your game during the level.)
The map on the knight's shiled that Lara found in Kazakhstan leads to a place that seems to have King Arthur's grave. If this place meant something to a knight one thousands years ago, it probably means something to Lara as well. So, you need to find out if the ruins of this place contain a sword fragment.
[Checkpoint] Lara is looking at a shimmering grating above that hides an opening. Use the Grapple and throw it down. There is a sword stuck in a stone in the nearby room, but Lara cannot pull it out. She says that she sprobably needs to turn on the power first. So, you have to turn on the power in order to enter the museum exhibit rooms that are located behind the door.
Enter the room beneath the opening that was hidden from the grating and pull the movable crate beneath the opening. Climb on the crate, then through the opening. Alister tells Lara that this place was owned by a Professor Worth, who had once students. Shoot the crate and pick up the Bronze Cross (1/9). Use the Grapple to remove the grating on the right and fall through the opening. [Checkpoint]
Small courtyard - Go to the other side and jump to grab the third sill above the window. Jump to grab the ledge above and traverse to the left past the gate. Drop down and use the lever to turn on the power. Climb up the pipe at the end of the alley and jump to grab the ledge on the right. Traverse to the right and grab the sill below. Do not drop to the ground, because the water is harmful from the wires. Jump to grab the next two sills and then jump to the part of the ground, where there is no water.
Room with destroyed floor - Open the door to the building and go to the room with the sword. [Checkpoint] Pull it to open the nearby door. Enter the next room with the destroyed floor. [Checkpoint] If you accidentally fall down, you will find some narrow ledges to climb back up. Go to the right (if the entrance is to your back) and jump to grab the small window. Get into the small room and shoot the crate to get a Bronze Cross (2/9). Climb back to the small window, hang from the edge and jump back to the floor.
Notice the horizontal pole close to the small window. Jump to grab it, swing and jump to grab the second pole. It will rotate 90 degrees, but it will go back to its initial position after a few seconds. Before it does so, jump to grab the third pole behind you. Swing and jump to grab the pole of the door ahead*. Lara's weight will lower the door, so quickly jump back to grab the previous pole. The door will fully open, but it will start closing. So, quickly swing and jump through the doorway.
(*Note: Most of the times, Lara grabs the pole of the door with one hand. In this case, an icon appears that prompts you press the Interact button and make Lara grab the pole with both hands before she loses her grip. This icon depends on the version of the game. For example, it is a Triangle icon for PS2 and a yellow hand icon for PC.)
Second room with destroyed floor - You reach a second room with destroyed floor. Again, if you accidetally fall down, there are narrow ledges that you can use and climb back up. Use the Accurate Aim to shoot and break the ring that holds the boat. Jump on the boat and jump to the opposite side. Go around to the right and crouch through the duct to a small room. Shoot the crate and pick up the Bronze Cross (3/9). Return back and pull the sword. This will cause some planks to fall, revealing a mechanism. Back up a bit and use the Grapple to pull the mechanism and open the nearby door. Release and go through the door before it closes. [Checkpoint]
Warehouse - You enter a warehouse with some crates an a forklift. There is also a grating in the back right corner that hides an opening which leads to the next Cross. So, use the Grapple to throw it down. Use the forklift and position a crate beneath the opening. Take a second crate with the forklift and approach the either left or right side of the first one. Raise the second crate, so its bottom touches the top of the first one (as shown in this screenshot). Climb on the crates, then through the opening. This is professor's office. Lara reads some papers that say that King Arthur's tomb - where his museum was built over - is a fake. Pick up the Silver Cross (1/5) and return back to the warehouse.
Get the forklift and drive down the ramp behind the crates. Lara says that this is definitely not King Arthur's tomb. She has seen so many tombs and she can know. She also says that this place is hiding something. So, you need to find access to the hidden ruins. Drive the forklift opposite the entrance to break the tomb. Pick up the Silver Cross (2/5) and drive the forklift to the crates on the left to smash the wall and find the access to the hidden ruins. Go through the opening. [Checkpoint] Stay on the forklift and drive through the two sets of spikes. Use the forklift to open the gate. Position the forks beneath the gate (as shown here) and raise it. Drive through the next spikes and crash the wall ahead. In the brief cut scene, press the appropriate button (as the game shows) to save Lara from falling into the deep pit.
(Note: Save your game here. Check the Important note below!!)
Going down the pit - [Checkpoint] As you can see, it is a long drop down, so be careful. First, take a look on the right to spot the Bronze Cross (4/9) in the alcove. Use the Grapple to catch it. Go down the broken steps and use the Grapple again to catch the Bronze Cross (5/9) from the alcove on the other side. Jump to grab the sill on the left and then jump to grab the ledge on the right. Quickly traverse to the right and drop down. The stairs are about to collapse, so go down them and jump to the stairs below. Again, the stairs will collapse, so jump to grab the pole. Swing and jump to land in the alcove ahead.
Hang from the edge and jump to grab the narrow ledge on the right. It is ready to collapse, so quickly traverse to the right. [Checkpoint] Pull into the opening, follow the passage to the left and pick up the Bronze Cross (6/9). Return back and drop down.
(Important note: The game creates a checkpoint whilst you are hanging from the edge of the opening that leads to the Bronze Cross. If you fail to the next part and kill Lara, the game will load, but Lara will be standing on the stairs beneath the opening without the Bronze Cross in her backpack. So, be careful, because you will not be able to reach the opening.)
Jump to grab the rope and swing diagonally to the right to land on the stairs that are ready to collapse. Quickly jump to the stairs ahead. Go down them and jump to grab the small opening on the left. Traverse around the corner and drop down. Hang from the edge and drop to the ground.
Ground - There is an arched pushable stone with the III sign on it. If you push it, it will return back. This and two more of this kind open a stone door here that leads to a Cross (the Gold one if you mind), so leave it for now.
Go up the stairs on the other side. [Checkpoint] Follow the hallway around to the left and jump over the lava pool. Continue to the right to reach a fire trap. Use the Grapple to pull the metal box close to you. Position the box on the first grating (you can push pull it). Climb on it and notice the fire that comes from the second grating beyond. When it comes on, jump there. Until you land, the fire will have gone off. Jump over the last fire. Pull the box close to you and use it for the next fire trap. When you pass it, bring the box close to you. Push it next to the stone door and climb on the box. Climb on the door and drop down to the other side. [Checkpoint] Use the lever to open the door.
Area with rotating blades - Bring the box inside [Checkpoint] and push it to stop the blades on the left (if the entrance is to your back). You do not have to push it in the room; just push it beneath the blades to stop them. Enter and pick up the Silver Cross (3/5). Exit and pull the box back. Push it beneath the blades on the opposite side (to the right if the entrance is to your back) and bring the second metal box outside. Push one of the two boxes beneath the third blades (opposite the entrance) . Take the other box and push it to the room behind the third blades.
If you want the Gold Cross, you have to push the box to both left and right sides of the room and push the two arched stones, which along with the other one you saw before will open the secret room. First, go to the left ledge and push the arched stone with the I sign. Then go to the right ledge for the stone with the II sign. You will use the last stone when you return back later.
Bring both boxes into the big room (behind the third blades). Push the one to stop the fourth blades on the other side and push the second behind them. Position the box above the fire. Now push the first box behind the second one and keep pushing it until both boxes are on the fire (as shown in this screenshot). That way you will make a path, which will be long enough to jump over the fire. Climb on the boxes and jump over the fire. Continue through the hallway and pull the lever to open the door.
Area with pool and coffin - Go through it and follow the hallway that will get you to a pressure plate. [Checkpoint] If you step on it, the gate on the other side will open. If you step off, the door will close. So, you need something to put on the plate. Jump into the pool and swim to the other side. Climb out of the water and use the Grapple to move the chandelier above the water. It will break some bars and a coffin will be revealed. Use the Grapple to throw it in the water. Now move the other chandelier to break the bars on the side. Use the Grapple to get the Bronze Cross (7/9).
Climb on the coffin and use the Grapple to catch the light that is close to the entrance. Move the coffin (and you) close to it. Then catch the light above the pressure plate and move the coffin on the ground. Then position it on the plate. Go down the stairs and through the gate.
Channels with water - Follow the hallway to reach a channel with water. [Checkpoint] (This diagram shows the channels.) Jump into the water and swim through the opening beneath the entrance. Get the Bronze Cross (8/9) and exit. Pull the lever to open the nearby gate. The current will push both you and the coffin through the gate. Quickly climb on the coffin and turn having the way you came from on your right. There is an opening in the wall halfway through the channel, so jump into it. If you miss it, climb on the coffin and use the Grapple to catch a light on the wall. Pull the coffin (and you) close to the light and as the coffin returns back (beause of the current) jump into the opening.
Jump into the water and swim forwad (notice the Cross in the alcove on the right). Swim through the channel on the left and turn left. Use the lever to open the nearby gate and allow the coffin enter the channel. Climb on the coffin and use the Grapple to catch the lights on the walls and move the coffin close to the alcove with the Silver Cross (4/5). Jump to the opening and claim the secret. Jump into the water and climb on the coffin. There is an opening exactly opposite the alcove where you just got the Cross. Move the coffin there and jump into. Drop to the water, which will push you to a huge pool.
Area with huge pool and Temple - Lara cannot dive into the water here, so swim to the other side and climb out of the water. Lara is amazed by the Temple. The door is closed, so you need to find another way to enter. Notice the two hanging fire pots. Go to the right one first. Use the Grapple to rotate and make it face the pool (the pot must be to the pool's direction). Go the left fire pot and turn it to face the left wall (if the pool is to your back).
(Note: You cannot turn the pots in any other direction, apart from the correct ones.)
Climb up the narrow ledges on the left to reach the top ledge. [Checkpoint] Jump to grab the pole, swing and jump to the slope. As you slide down, jump to grab the pole of the fire pot. It will rotate, so swing, jump and use the Grapple to catch a fire pot above. Swing and jump to grab the other pole with the fire pot. It will rotate, so swing and jump to grab the rock ahead. Pull up and climb on the second rock. Then jump to grab the ledge. Jump to grab the sill above, then the one on the right. Jump to grab the chain and climb up it. Jump to the Temple's roof [Checkpoint], go to the other side and pick up the Silver Cross (5/5). Return back almost to the middle and jump to grab the chain. Slide down to enter the Temple.
In the cut scene, Lara enters the Temple. Alister asks what she is looking at and she replies a myth, except it is real. As she passes in front of the tombs, she says that they are all here - the court of Kamelot. Alister asks if she is sure and Lara says that has no doubt about the authenticity of this tomb. She approaches a statue which is surrounded by a lighted shield. Lara says that there was not only one Excalibur or one Merlin. They keep seeing swords and dais in all over the world, simply because they are everywhere. In their case, their Merlin was killed and their sword was left in pieces.
You have to now find King Arthur's sarcophagus. Go to the left side of the Temple (if the main entrance is to your back) and locate Bedwyr's tomb.
In the cut scene, Lara reads that Bedivere returned a fragment of Excalibur to Arthur after the other pieces were carried off by the knights. This fragment was left with Arthur to help him leave this mausoleum when the time came.
Pull the tomb and position it next to the broken pillar on the other side. Notice the bell and the hanging stone. If you grab the chain of the stone, it will lower and the bell will go higher. So, use the Grapple to catch the chandelier. Back up as much as you can (close to the statue) and pull the chandelier. Release it and it will start swinging. Quickly climb on the broken tomb, then on the pillar and jump to grab the chain where the stone is hanging from. If the chandelier is still swinging, it will hit the bell.
The cut scene shows the shield of the statue exploding. Lara approaches the statue and takes from Arthur Pendragon's statue a sword segment of Excalibur. Lara would not take it if she did not need it so. Zip talks to Lara and says that something is going on there. They start shouting while Lara asks to know what's happening. She does not get a reply.
You just got the sword fragment, but Alister and Zip's voices worried Lara. You need to get back to surface and save Zip and Alister. [Checkpoint] Exit the Temple.
The cut scene shows a huge snake monster appearing from the water.
Fighting the snake monster - You cannot kill the snake monster directly (by shooting at it) so do not waste your time and ammo. Do not let its size scare you! There are four tanks in the water with a lever each. You have to approach each tank and shoot it (that's why the target appears). The monster will hear the sound of the tank, be hypnotized and turn its head towards the cage that is hanging. You then have to quickly use the Grapple, catch the lever and pull it to lower the cage and hit the monster. You can understand that you made it correctly, when a brief cut scene will show the monster destroying the tank. Since there are four tanks, you need to repeat the same procedure three more times.
The monster not only attacks with its head, but it also spit toxic liquid. This takes some of your health, but also tosses Lara up. If you are close to the lake, you will fall into. The moster will then get you and throw you to the ground, which makes you lose more health. So, stay away from the lake as much as you can (not too far away though and make your job harder). In case you lower the cage without a succesful hit, do not stay to the spot and do not shoot the tank. The monster will not hear the noise while the cage goes up. You better go for another tank.
[Bug note: Many people have encountered a bug with the two front cages (those in the middle of the pool), where they do not lower when the the levers are pulled. So, start with the front tanks first in case you will not be able to lower the cages after spending time with the back ones. If you are a console player and after trying a couple of times the bug still occurs, you need to load a previous saved game. Otherwise, you will have to start the game from the beginning (we have not found a solution for this bug until now). If you are a PC player, you can download a saved game.]
When you make it, the cut scene will show the moster dying. Half of its body remains on the surface.
Jump into the water and climb on the ledge close to the monster. Vault onto the monster's back and walk on it. Climb up the ledges and go through the opening. Follow the hallway to reach a deep pit. [Checkpoint] Jump off the ledge and press Jump in midair to use the Grapple and catch the hanging pot above. Swing and jump to the opposite side. Jump to grab the pole and jump to land on a slide. Jump over the gap.
Eh? Another one? Quickly press the appropriate buttons (as the game shows) to save Lara and seal the snake monster behind the gate.
Turn around and enable the Accurate Aim. Shoot the ring at the top of the gate to release the rope. Grab the shield on the gate and jump to grab the top of the gate. Jump to grab the rope, swing and release to drop down. Pick up the Bronze Cross (9/9). Climb up the gate as before and jump to grab the rope. Turn around, swing and jump to the ledge. [Checkpoint] Pull the lever to open the gate and slide down the slope. You are back close to the fire traps.
Going back - Draw weapons, because you are not alone this time. Two guards are waiting in the hallway, so kill them. Keep your weapons drawn. They have company. Two more guards will attack at the end of the hallway, so kill them too. Then pick up the items you need. One of them was shooting from a ledge, so you need to climb there for the pick-ups.
(Note: Make sure you have pushed the two arched stones in this room for the Gold Cross).
Use one of the boxes to stop the blades. Pass them and continue ahead towards the fire trap. [Checkpoint] A guard will shoot from behind the bars and another one from the other side of the fire trap, so kill them. You can shoot and kill the one behind the bars and throw a grenade to the other one who is standing beyond the fire trap. Jump over the two fire traps and pick up any item you need from the guards (you may want to pick up the SMG gun they dropped, because this is what the rest use). Go back the hallway and kill one more guard on the other side of the lava pool. Jump over it and go down the steps. [Checkpoint]Kill yet another guard.
Push the arched stone with the III sign. This along with other two will open the stone door here. Go through it and pick up the Gold Cross (1/1).
These guys came down using an automatic metal ledge that you can see in the middle of the room. Climb on it and push the button to go up. A guard will start shooting from the top, so kill him. Use the Grapple to catch the shimmering bars. Pull to start swingning. Jump to grab the sill above the bars and jump to the stairs on the left (or jump from the ledge directly to the stairs).
A dog and two guards will attack, so kill them. A third guard with his dog are waiting behind a crate beyond, so take care of them too. [Checkpoint] When you reach the circular room, two more guards will attack. They carry a buckler, so a Grenade will be better. Return back to the warehouse and kill yet two more guards. Once you kill them, a cut scene plays.
The cut scene, shows Lara hearing a man calling the last pair of guards you killed. We then see this man (who is a gurad) holding a gun and pointing Zip and Alister. The guard does not get a reply, so he tries to check. When the gate to the warehouse opens, no one is inside. The gurad enters and the camera shows Zip and Alister. We suddenly see the guard dropping down. Lara appears and asks if everything is ok. The two men says yes, so Lara says they should better go home.
Back to Croft Manor, the cut scene shows Lara, Winston, Zip and Alister looking at the sword. Alister is amazed that King Arthur, the Knights and the Round Table were real. Lara says that the Excalibur was for King Arthur an afrtifact that predated him by the milenia. Zip reminds them that it is still in pieces and Lara asks him if he found anything about the Ghalali Key. Winston says that it was not in her father's collection, but Lara says that it was not in Ghana either.
Lara puts two pieces together and she sees a familiar symbol. She then takes a look at the painiting above the fireplace. This is a painting with her parents, and Lara can see that her mother has a pendant on the lapel of her coat, representing this symbol. Winston says that it was a gift by her father, but he (Winston) never knew where it came from... until now. Alister asks where this pendant is now and Lara says in the Himalayas, because her mother had it with her (when the plane crashed. Do you remember the first cut scene of the game, where Lara's mother unpinned a pendant from the lapel of her coat and put it on the seat?). She informes Zip and Alister that she is going to Nepal and asks them to make the usual arrangements. As Lara goes up the stairs, Winston asks her not to try to use the sword after what happened to her mother. Lara says that her mother was killed by removing the sword, so she does not intent to do the same.
In the cut scene, Lara returns to the place, where she first met Rutland in Bolivia. He, Amanda and two guards are waiting on the other side. Lara asks Zip and Alister not to distract her from now on, because she needs a clear head for what will follow. They wish her luck... Lara grabs the rope and slides close to Rutland and Amanda. Lara pulls the sword out and warns them that if they go between her and the stone, they will die. Amanda asks her to stop, because she does not want anything bad to happen, but it will if Lara goes closer. Lara uses the sword and throws them back. Rutland orders his men to kill her.
You just returned to Bolivia. Lara has to learn what these artifacts can do, but Amanda wants to activate the stone dais as well. She maybe knows the its purpose... or maybe not.
[Checkpoint] Pull the sword out. You do not have to be very close to the guards. With a single use the green light will kill them. There are quite many of them, so keep an eye on your health bar. Try to pick up the Health Packs they drop and make sure that you have enough health and three Health Packs with you for the battle that follows. Once they are all dead, a cut scene will play.
In the cut scene, Rutland tries to stand on his feet but he is wounded badly. Amanda tries to help him, but he falls dead. Lara apologizes and walks to the center of the arena, where the stone is. Amanda asks her to stay away from it, but this is what Lara came for. Amanda then stands on her feet and removes the artifact from her neck. It is obvious that she has bad motives and Lara tells her that they can both do that. Amanda says that this works once and she wants to be the one. She then uses the artifact and transforms into a huge monster.
Fighting Amanda - [Checkpoint] Do not be afraid by her size! Pull the sword out, because you need to fight Amanda with it. The deal is to stun her four times. Every time this happens, you have to approach Amanda and press the Interact button (as the game shows) for the final stab. You may have found your own strategy, but here is one:
First, you may want to change the Combat Mode to Advanced Toggle. This way, Lara will aim at Amanda no matter what. Do not stay away from her. Keep attacking with the sword and try to stay beneath her. Pressing just the Up and Shoot buttons are enough. It does not matter if Amanda is moving around. The Up button will make you move and the Advanced Toggle will make you follow her and stay close to her. There will be times that her harmful bolts will get you, but in general it is more effective to stay beneath her than running away from her.
Alternative method - In Hard mode is probably difficult to follow the above method, because Amanda's bolts (that hit you when you stay beneath her) take a lot of your health. You have to find a "safe" spot and shoot Amanda from there, which is easier than running around. One of them is to stay behind a pillar. Not all pillars can do the job, but the one as shown in this screenshot may help. There are four of them, but choose the one that provides a wide area behind it (the one on the left, for example, as soon as the battle begins). If one of Amanda's bolts pushes you back, you will not fall into the chasm. The pillar will soon break by either your bolts or Amanda's. Stay behind the broken pillar, having Amanda opposite you, and shoot her from there. Amanda will most probably try and get you, so when you see her approaching, move to the other side. This screenshot shows Amanda going to the right (as you face her). You have to move to the left and around the broken pillar and try to stay opposite her. Keep shooting all the time.
You may want to enable Advanced Toggle. That way, Lara will always aim at Amanda and you will only have to move Lara around the pillar, and backwards forwards if necessary. There are also some already broken pillars, but do not choose to stay behind those (if it is possible), because you may get stuck on the lamps as you move around. If Amanda drops down just behind the pillar, go and stab her. If her health is low, but she is in the middle of the arena (close to the stone), you have to reveal yourself and give the final shots as you approach her. Otherwise, you will not have time to reach her before she awakes. And if you have Advanced Toggle enabled, you may want to holster the sword before going to Amanda, or Lara will probably act strangely and run around herself.
When you succeed, Amanda transforms back to her original appearance, laying on the ground unconscious. Lara picks up Amanda's artifact and feels sorry for what happened. She then pulls out the sword and places it in the stone. She uses a book as a guide, activates the pillars around and uses the sword like a lever. A big metal circle rises up, which is the same she saw when her mother died. She hears some voices from the green light. It is her mother talking, asking Lara to get back. It is what Lara lived in the past when she was young. It is the same moment, when the green light took her mother. Lara thinks that her mother talks to her, so she starts calling her. The moment where her mother is about to touch the sword is coming and Lara (the real her) shouts "Don't touch the sword", hoping that her mother will hear her.
Amanda wakes up and asks Lara to take out the sword. Lara still talks to her mother. She asks her to listen to her. Amanda tells her that it will explode, unless Lara pulls out the sword. Lara sees her mother through the green light touching the sword. Lara screams "Noooo!!!", hoping again that her mother will listen to her. The circle is about to explode, but Lara makes a swan dive and escapes.
The sword falls in front of Lara and Amanda tells Lara that she ruined everything. Lara gets mad!! She tells Amanda that all these years she blamed herself (lara) for her mother's death, but it was Amanda who killed her. Lara points the gun to her and Amanda says that Lara's mother is not dead and she went where Amanda was supposed to go and where Lara could have gone. Lara is really mad at Amanda and asks her to explain what she means or she will execute her. Amanda only tells her that pulling the sword out was the important thing. Lara shoots in the air and asks Amanda where her mother is. Amanda says she is in Avalon, which is not a myth. Lara points her gun to Amanda's forehead, but she finally does not kill her. She hits her with the gun though and Amanda falls unconscious. From this moment, Amanda's every breath is a gift from Lara.
Alister talks to Lara. She tells him that for years his father believed that her mother was alive and it was what kept him going. She then tells Alister to go to the British museum immediatelly, while she takes the sword from the ground. She then asks Zip to call Professor Eddigton and arrange a meeting. Zip asks what he should tell him. Lara says that her father was right about everything and there may still be time to do something about it. She grabs the rope she came from and traverses back.
The end
