Intro to R Racing
*********

A driving game that accurately simulates racing and its many cars is a game not to miss.
However the concept, as with all racing games, is simple: cross the finish line first.
So this guide should help you to do this...and more.

*********
What car?
*********

1. Car select screen

When it comes to choosing cars, you have to actually test the cars out in Arcade mode or Time Trial to find out how good they are.
Ignore the little blue lines which are supposed to represent the stats of the car, they mean nothing because sometimes you get a car which is COMPLETELY different from another car; yet they both have the same stats. Stupid.
Well anyways, you have several categories to choose from when selecting a car...GT Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Drag Class, etc.

2. Testing the car

Now lets say, for example, we choose GT Class 1.
We then flick through the cars and pick one that has, on first glance, high stats (and looks cool). Take that car out for a spin on any circuit. Get a feel for the car's handling, e.g. How sharp it can turn without sliding, how fast you can go round a corner without it sliding, how late/early you can brake, etc.
I recommend going on the Monaco track because that has a good variety of corners and long straights that you can test your car on.
Try to discover as much as you can about the car in 2 or 5 laps of a circuit.

3. Adjustments

If you find the car is too slippery, fiddle around with the settings for the car and see what happens, it’s all about testing when it comes to choosing the right car in this game.
Read the manual of the game to find out what sort of adjustments need to be made to your car to solve any problems.

4. Speed and your final choice.

Speed is obviously very important in a car so what I recommend is you pick the car you want to test and go onto a very simple circuit such as the Twin Ring circuit, Greenfield circuit or even the half-mile stretch Surfside. In all of these courses, try to push the car to the maximum speed you can get it to.
And a final point on car choosing: make sure the car you choose fits in with what sort of race you are in. E.g. For a rally race, try to avoid GT Class or Prototype cars!
So now that you have tested the cars, you then have to pick the car that you find best to use. Its up to your own personal choice on what car you find best.

*********
Courses
*********

The courses are all varied, even though there are only several courses to race on. There are normal race circuits, drag courses and rally courses. I'll start with normal race circuits.

1. Normal race circuits

When racing on circuits, make sure you stick to the inside edges on most of the corners but avoid the inside red and white striped bumps because sometimes they can make your car skid.

Practice on ALL the circuits before racing them for real, it will help a lot as some of the circuits have very unpredictable sharp corners (e.g. Phillip Island and Monaco).

Avoid going onto the grass/sand and hitting the walls. Although it make not seem like such a big problem but a lot of time and speed is lost by touching the walls or going onto the grass a little.

On the Twin Ring, always take advantage of the slipstreams of other cars because it is difficult to overtake by just passing up along side them. The pressure meter comes in handy in the Twin Ring as well, for the same reason.

Feel free to take a shortcut on the final S-bend of the Suzuka circuit. As you’re entering the first S-bend corner, drive across the off-course green patch to cut across the corner without losing much speed. Avoid the sand patch; it’s a nightmare to escape.
The same goes for the S-bend that comes after the tunnel on the Monaco circuit.

2. Drag courses

Work on the timing of letting go of brake when it says GO. Keep an eye on the starting lights; there will be about 5 white lights before the bottom green light so be prepared to let go brake when the final white light is lit.

If your opponents are ahead of you, slipstream one of the opponents and just before you hit the back of the opponent: use your Nitro and zoom past them.

As soon as you get the chance to use your Nitro, use it. Don’t waste any time otherwise your opponents will use theirs first.

Manual transmission can sometimes help you to get better acceleration and also, in the settings menu, adjust the final drive ratio so it is set to maximum acceleration.

3. Rally courses

Use handbrake on hairpin turns, hard turns and some medium turns.

Pay attention to what your co-driver is saying. I don’t know much rally driving language but I think I have figured out some of what he is saying.
E.g. “150, Easy Right Maydig (or something like that)”
‘150’ means the next corner/caution is in 150 metres, after experience with rally driving you will be able to judge the distances he tells you.
‘Easy Right’ is a simple right turn; this is also visually aided by the symbol at the top centre of the screen.
‘Maydig’ means that the corner ends in a straight or a right-angle turn, not sure which but that’s the general idea.
Alternatively he also says, instead of ‘maydig’, ‘tightens’. This means that the corner becomes narrower and slightly sharper.

The cautions he says are not to be ignored, except when he cautions the cattle grid (the bit which has tiny spaces between the poles that make up a bridge), that’s just pointless.
His cautions are: “Over-crest” and “Over-jump”.
Over-crest means you might not be able to see what is after the hill in front of you and over-jump is basically a sort of ramp that can make your car jump.
Over-jumps are fun but be careful about how you land because if you land at a wrong angle, your car will spin out. Try to land in a forward direction, not to the side. Also, don’t turn just before the jump, in mid-air or just after you land.

Try not to overuse the handbrake when going round a corner because you can lose control of your car.
NOTE: The handbrake does not slow your car down by much, so use your normal brakes if you want to lose speed.

You can hit the walls quite a lot and still stay in first position but try to avoid hitting the walls at a wrong angle.

On the Rally Arena, you will be racing directly against another rally driver.
Keep an eye on the mini-map for your position and your opponents position. If your opponent is keeping up with you then start pushing your rally car to its limits – turn sharply, handbrake round corners.

If you think you are going to spin when you handbrake round a corner, try to side-on crash into the outside wall because that should make your car stable again. However avoid banging the front of your car into the wall, it can knock you off course a bit.

On Windmill Hill, there is a medium turn where there isn’t anything to stop you falling off the outside edge. Slow down and stick as hard as you can to the inside edge and DO NOT use handbrake, only normal brakes.

Racing Life
*********

The story mode in the game has difficulty levels, the easy difficulty is for babies and the normal difficulty is just plain easy. The hard difficulty will challenge you a little but most of the times you can win the races first or second time round.

When you get to the car select screen, the car you choose is the car that you will use all the way through that chapter of the story. Once you complete Racing Life (and it doesn’t take that long), you can go back and replay past chapters.
If you don’t want to spend money on buying new cars from the car dealer, then all you have to do is go back to Racing Life and replay a chapter except choosing a car that you haven’t got. Complete the chapter and you will unlock the car. Easy.

Note: When racing there will be your archrival Gina to race against as well as the other 5 racers. Apply max pressure to her so that she spins off course and drops down a few positions, that way she doesn’t get as many points as what she would have got if she came 2nd.
Try to target the racer who is 2nd to you in the points table so that if you happen to lose on the final race in the chapter, you won’t be beaten in the points table.

Event Challenge
*********

The Event Challenge mode is huge, extremely huge. It represents over 50% of the game, the other 50% comprised of the unlock-able cars and Racing Life.
There are multiple game modes in Event Challenge:
Single Race.
Time Trials.
One-Make Race.
Vs Rival.
Tournament.
Tour Race.
And...Extra.

1. Single Race

There are loads of single races on different tracks with different types of cars to race against. None of the races will unlock anything so don’t expect much from each race.

Take your time when racing, don’t try to hard otherwise you’ll end up spinning off the track and going back to 6th position again.

Use the same hints as explained in the Courses section for Normal Races.

When using the privateer class of cars, be careful because they are very slippery.
Brake sensibly and don’t accelerate when going round corners.
If you feel as if you are losing control of the car: brake SLOWLY, don’t accelerate at all and turn lightly in the opposite direction to the one you are swerving off into.
E.g. You start sliding to the right...lightly hold down/repeatedly tap the brake button (preferably the L shoulder pad because it is nicely pressure sensitive), let go of acceleration (preferably the R shoulder pad, same reason) and tilt the control stick a little to the left to turn in that direction.

2. Time Trials

In the Trials, you will have to go as fast as you can to achieve the gold medal time.

Avoid hitting walls and going onto the grass.

Stick to the road and stay on the road.

Short cuts are not allowed so resist the temptation (especially on the final S-bend on Suzuka and one the S-bend after the tunnel in Monaco).

Use the same rules as said in the Courses section for Normal Races.

On the special time trials, you have to use your excellent braking, judgement and turning skills (hopefully) to get through an obstacle course of cones and barriers. Don’t hit the barriers or knock over the cones because they add seconds to your time and you need a very low time to get the gold medal.
Brake sensibly and don’t worry if you have to retry the course again because the more you retry it, the more you know about where the cones or barriers are placed.
Use your normal racing line when you are doing the obstacle course for the first time, hopefully your racing line (your path around the track) should be a time-saver.

3. One-make race

These can be quite tough because everyone is using the same car. Make sure your car is tuned up to the max so it will be an easy win.

See the Vs Rival section for the tip to get easy money so tuning up your car is easier to do.

The Mitsubishi Lancer race is pretty tough so use slipstreams and pressure to get through the opposition. Of course you may have to do the same on a few other tough opponents in different races.

Same rules for racing as always (stick to the inside, brake properly, avoid grass and walls, etc)

4. Vs Rival

I love this mode; there are lots of cool cars to unlock as well as the race you do to get easy money.

Most of the races are pretty easy if you have the right car for the job, so make sure you use the best car you have got for that class of car.
For example, for GT Class 1 my choice will be BMW McLaren F1 because that is one of my favourite cars and it is already tuned to the max.

In the race to win Vialli’s prototype Audi Infinion on the Twin Ring, you will need to be an expert at slipstreaming and applying pressure. Also, make sure your prototype car is fully tuned up. All the prototype cars are very good but overall the Bentley is the best when fully tuned.
Apply the max pressure to Vialli and he will eventually spin off, fly past him and try as hard as you can to keep ahead of him. If he tries to overtake you, block his path.

**EASY MONEY**

In the 7th Vs Rival race, you will be up against Nelly and his drag car. To defeat him the first time: use the Charger or the Shelby drag cars as they, so far, are the best you have.
When you defeat him, you get his Mazda RX- 7 drag car and over 100,000 RP!
You can now beat him as much as you want using his car because it is now the best drag car you have.
Remember, you can come back to this race anytime you want and get some quick money! This isn’t a cheat because you’re meant to get 100,000 RP when you defeat him.

5. Tournament

Basically this is a knockout tournament so don’t lose a single race.
You will race one-on-one against your opponents in a 2, 3 or 5 lap race.
There will be 3 or 5 races to do and with each race, the opponents get tougher.
If you win the tournament by beating all your opponents, you will get a new car.

Use your best car for the class you are racing in and make sure everything is tuned up; some of the races get pretty tough!

You can unlock the BMW McLaren F1 in this mode, it’s the first Suzuka tournament race (Suzuka 1).

6. Tour Race

Another simple race mode except you race on several tracks against the same opponents. You unlock new cars on some of the tour races.
Nothing much to say on this except: good luck!

7. Extra

Interesting mode where you have to stop in a designated area on the track, quite difficult at times.

To get the best results when stopping:
Tune up your car so the weight is reduced as low as it can go.
Turn off ABS completely.
Press the brake button AND handbrake when stopping.
Get to the area quickly so you have more time to stop.

There is one level where you have a Rally Class 2 car and you have to stop in a rectangular area by doing a handbrake turn so you skid sideways into the area.
I had a lot of trouble with this so this is how you do it:
About 2 or 3 seconds after you pass the overhead bridge, stick to the right outside wall and handbrake sharply to the left. Turn the wheels left and right so the car is still skidding sideways. If you time it right, you should stop in the area.

That’s all the Race modes in Event Challenge.
There is also a Performance Shop and a Car Dealer where you can tune up your existing cars or buy a new one. All these cost money so the Easy Money bit in the Vs Rival section should help you a lot.

A final few tips on R Racing
*********

1. Slipstreaming

Easy to do, simply drive directly behind an opponent who is in front of you and you will gain speed as well as applying pressure. Overtake when you get the chance.
Avoid banging into the back of the opponent; you don’t want to give them a little boost of speed!
Don’t let other racers get into your slipstream, keep out of the usual racing path of the course.

2. Overtaking

Everyone knows how to overtake but in this game, you get RP for not making any accidents so make sure you overtake when the time is right and not on a hairpin turn! The starting straight is a good overtaking spot and so are the long curves.
Try to overtake on the outside bend if possible because most of your computer opponents won’t turn corners on the outside bend and neither will they try to stop you overtaking them.
Use shortcuts to overtake opponents (The good ol’ final S-bend on Suzuka is a good shortcut to overtake and so is the S-bend after the tunnel in Monaco).

3. Pressure meter

Not a very good idea to add into a racing game but it can help a lot when you are having a tough time with the opposition (or if you need to take out an annoying racer).
Some racers have a very short pressure meter (the easy racers) and some racers have a massive pressure meter (tough racers like Vialli and Gina).
Use the pressure meter with slipstreaming to get the ultimate offensive manoeuvre.

4. Course Path

The usual course path can be seen on most of the track by the black tyre marks. Follow the marks because they show a good path to take on a course, but be careful about the opposition because they also follow the path and if they are behind you, they will be in your slipstream giving you grief.
Move away from the black lines to get them out of your slipstream.

5. Ignore

Ignore your chief because he doesn’t help. For example, he says:
“Just act like that guy behind you isn’t there” – so you do what he says and act cool.
But a few seconds later, he says:
“He’s preparing to overtake you!” – so you start panicking because the racer behind you is going to overtake. So you try to get away but in doing so you spin off track when going round a corner too fast. Great...thanks Chief...and what is your wonderful Chief’s reply to your accident?
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”
Fool.

6. Braking, accelerating and handling

DO NOT USE BRAKE ASSIST! Only use it when you REALLY need to (see section 7). Practice as much as you can without brake assist because then you can easily beat tough opponents and get some wicked lap times. Also, without brake assist, you can zoom across shortcuts without the brakes slowing you down.

The general rule for going round corners:
Tap the brake a few times before you start turning, let go of acceleration.
Stop braking and start turning on the inside, lightly hold down acceleration to get a bit of speed if you need to.
Don’t turn too sharply.
Once the turn ends, blister away from the corner exit with a deep press of the accelerator.

7. Brake Assist

If your not doing well at all on a course (It was really hard on the 2nd from last single race in Event Challenge), use brake assist to get round corners without messing up. It can slow you down but use it anyways if you’re desperate.

8. When you’re losing...crash into your opponents and knock them off course

It’s a dirty tactic I know, but it helps a lot. Luckily, the programmers didn’t put ANY damage on your car so you can bash around the opposition as much as you want and not get hurt.

That’s it, hopefully this guide should have helped you thrash this game to pieces.

Have fun R Racers.
