Retro Game Walkthroughs for Ultimate Spider-Man (Gamecube)
Submitted By: Meka Dragon
Unlike the two previous Spider-man games on the GameCube, this one does not follow the story of the related movies, but is based on the comic book series Ultimate Spider-man, and specifically, the story involving Venom, and in this game you get to control both Spider-man and Venom.

After the initial cut-scenes that explain the back-story you're thrown into a fight with Venom. On screen instructions guide you through, and it's kind of a tutorial. Take notice of Spidey's head, when it lights up with those yellow lines, that's your spider sense a-tingling, and it's best to move. In this case a double jump will get you out of trouble.
Best way to deal with Venom is to deliver a couple of punches or kicks, then jump out of the way before he can retaliate. Eventually you'll have to lead him out into the street.

When Venom tries to absorb you hit L&R to escape, then go back to the fight. Avoid the electrical wires, and keep attacking then jumping clear, until the next cut-scene begins.

You'll be back as Peter Parker, and have to go home, nothing to challenge you, just jump all the way there. Another cut-scene, and you get to do some swinging around to a warehouse where you have to meet Mary-Jane, again it's just to get you used to swinging. Once there you'll be alerted to an event with Shocker.

Fighting Shocker shouldn't be a problem, use L to fire web into his hands, he'll shock himself eventually, or you can beat on him. He's unlikely to cause you a problem.

Once he's out of the way markers will begin to appear on the map. Red ones indicate city events, you need to complete a certain amount of these before you can progress the story. Follow the red dot, and deal with the event. Sometimes it will be a case of saving someone hanging from a building, in which case crawl to them, and press X to grab. Land on the ground and put them down. More often that not it'll just be a case of beating up some thugs. If they come in a large group, it's best not to get surrounded. Use L to tie some up with webbing, and keep in the air to avoid blows, jump and kick them. If they're grounded with a web icon above them, fire at them with L, it'll take them out of the game, and they won't get up. Other city events include chasing cars. If so, land on top of them, and hammer B to punch them. When the screen pops up with a gun on it, move to the opposite side of the car - ie, if it appears on the left, go to the right.

Also at this stage in the game races become available and combat tours. Races are a case of following a path to get to a goal in a set about of time to earn medals - they're good practice for swinging. Combat tours involve beating up one group of thugs after another, usually increasingly large groups, which will hone your battle skills.

There will be a marker indicating a race with the Fantastic Four's flaming Human Torch, Johnny Storm. If you beat him (and it's not too tough if you use a combination of swings and web zipping) you get a swing speed upgrade. Further races with him become available later, and completing these will upgrade your web speed, very useful for the boss chases.

Hitting pause and checking the city goals menu will let you know how many city events, races, combat tours and tokens you need to find before you can advance the story. If you have enough, a green indicator will appear on the map, and this is where you have to go to get to the next cut-scene, and story section of the game. It's worth picking up as many races, tours and city events on the way to the green dot so that you're always in advance of what you require to move on, so if you want to, you can dash right to the next story section.

Once you get to the green, you switch to Venom for the first time, and get a bit of a tutorial. You can do massive jumps, and cover huge distances with a move similar to the web zip, hitting L&R together. You can recuperate energy by consuming people with L, and throw cars and the like with x. It's a similar set-up to Spider-man, but switching between the two can still cause a bit of confusion. Eventually you'll be told to throw a motorbike. This puts you into a boss battle with Wolverine, of all people.

Wolverine

The best way to beat Wolverine (and indeed, most enemies as Venom) is to keep your distance and use the tentacle attack. It can strike from a distance, so when you see Wolverine close in, get across to the other side of the room, and hit from a distance again. Don't try to feed on him, as he can cut his way out. Eventually the fight will go on to another location, but use the same method to defeat him.

Rhino

Back to being Spider-man, and Rhino's causing havoc on the streets. As you start after Rhino you'll find he's causing the endangerment of your beloved citizens, and Spidey can't let someone die, he's a hero and all that. Grab the injured man and drop him in the green section by the ambulance. The arrows will guide you in the right direction. A store is getting robbed, and the owner squashed, go up to the glowing section and hit x. Use L and R alternately to move the meter into the green, and keep it there - if you go too fast you'll overshoot, it's all about timing. When he's free beat up the thugs. Follow the arrows again to the woman trapped under the car. You have to press x to grab and L&R again to lift. This time you also have to pick the woman up and drop her by an ambulance. Follow Rhino and he'll throw a car. There's a bloke to save hanging on the wall, grab him with x, and drop him by the ambulance. Stop and beat up some thugs for the police, then you're finally able to go after Rhino.
You catch up with him at a construction site, in which he’s trying to cause mass destruction with a fuel tank. Hop on his back (jump then grab) and mash at him with a few punches until he turns his attention to you. Hop off before he throws you off, then head for the wet cement. As he goes to punch (watch your Spider-sense) jump clear, and he’ll be momentarily stuck in the cement. Head for the crane and hit the grab button to launch a cut-scene and move on to the next stage.
Chase Rhino to the parking lot. He’ll throw cars at you. Avoid these with a combination of jumping and swinging, or by using the web-zip. Be careful not to back yourself in a corner. Don’t try to head out of the parking lot, it’ll automatically turn you around, and probably leave you in a trouble spot. You see the light on his back after a while, and it’s time to jump on and bash away. Hit him four or five times, then jump off. When his life bar gets low he’ll charge at you more often. Make him run into walls by standing close and jumping/zipping out of the way at the last second. After a few of these you’ll have another chance to jump on his back. The important thing is to not take too many risks, keep out of the way, and only try to attack when you can jump on his back, otherwise you won’t do any damage at all.

Venom
Once Rhino’s out of the way you switch to Venom, and the small army that’s chasing him. Use the big jump and tentacle zip to move quickly, following the arrows. Every time you come across a group of soldiers eat as many as possible to keep your life energy up. Take out those on cars quickly though, by throwing the cars at other enemies. Keep following the arrows and defeating the soldiers until you reach the cut-scene.

Back as Spidey, you now have to fight Vemon. Don’t stay close to him, as it gives you a headache. You’ll pause and Venom will attack. If he absorbs you hit L&R repeatedly to get out. Again, the best method is to keep your distance, wait for Venom to throw back his arms and roar, and attack him then. Best attack is from the air, double jump and launch into a kick. Throw a punch or two and jump back out of the way, waiting for him to throw back his arms again. As long as you always keep your distance (and keep your eyes open, he can be upon you quickly) it’s not too difficult.

Once this is complete, swing home to launch the Electro cut-scene.

Electro

As Venom you have to chase after Electro. The difficulty of this is that if you get too close he will hit you with an electric charge. Whenever he stops for a period of time stay just out of range; this can be seen on the chase bar. Chasing him right to the top of buildings can be tough, try to stay as close as possible, and beware when he goes down that he doesn’t go straight down to ground floor. If you jump all of the way down you’ll get too far away from him, and have to retry. You’ll probably have to retry a number of times anyway, as his path is somewhat unpredictable, and you cannot always immediately see where he has gone.

Once you keep up with him for the whole path, you get the pleasure of fighting him. He will either throw minor electrical bolts which you can jump or tentacle zip to avoid, or send out a large charge, in which case, when he’s powering up, get back. Spider-man is unconscious on the ground, and you have to make sure Electro doesn’t attack him either, so don’t wander too far from Spidey. Stay close to Electro, and attack with tentacles, getting back when he’s about to send out the big charge. This will get you to the second part of the fight, in which he turns blue. Now he can use the electric billboards to recharge, and will continue to do so until you take them out. Either throw cars at them, or jump up to them and punch them out. Be wary that whilst you are doing this, he could be attacking Spidey. Once most of the billboards are down, start throwing cars at Electro. It’s a case of having to be persistent, as he will dodge most of the time. When one does land on him he’ll briefly return to human form - either throw another car at him, or attack with tentacles. As long as he can’t recharge with billboards, the fight shouldn’t take too long.

Beetle.

Now it’s Spider-Man’s turn to chase a villain. Almost right away he’ll damage a tunnel, so you have to save a couple of people that are trapped. Two people are trapped, grab them one at a time and drop them off by the ambulance. Once both are safe swing over the tunnel (it’s quicker) following the arrow to catch up with Beetle. No sooner have you caught up with him than he’s causing more mischief, flying through a building and setting it alight. Swing into the building, grab the woman and put her down by the ambulance.
Get back in the chase, and Beetle will throw some ‘walls’ in the way, some you have to swing over, some under. Web-zipping between gaps is the best way to maintain the right height after swinging there.
Once through this first set, he totals a car, trapping three people. Save all of these, then continue the chase. He will throw up more barriers which you have to go over or under. Continue to follow for a little further, and you’ll get a chance to beat him up.

At the top of the building are two floors on which you can fight Beetle. You don’t even have to completely destroy him, just leave him with around 1/3 of his energy. Avoid his minor attacks (swooping and laser) with jumps, double jumping and zipping. He stops to do a larger attack, but there’s time for you to jump in and kick him. It’s not too tricky, you just have to be patient and wait to strike at the right moment. He’s easy to dodge, so even if you miss a few opportunities to attack him he still shouldn’t trouble you too much.

Sable

Back as Venom, you get a chance to escape, but Sable wants to stop you. Her only attack is firing at you with her gun. When she whips this out, super-jump out of the way, or use the tentacle zip. When she’s not firing either attack with parked cars, or use your tentacles. If she starts to wear your energy down grab some humans to feed on to top it up.

Once she’s down, the soldiers come in after you. Approach them quickly and feed on them, this should restore any energy they take by firing at you. Don’t go after them in large clusters, try to pick them off and eat them instead, otherwise they can wear you down quickly. After eating a few, a marker will appear that you have to head for. Don’t waste much time in fights, they just keep coming back, just super-jump up to the top of buildings and head across to the target. Helicopters attack you now. These are bets avoided. They can be taken out by throwing cars at them, but you’re likely to take a real hit on the energy front whilst attempting it. Run from the choppers, hide down narrow alleys, and grab men where you can to keep the energy topped up. After eating a number of these another marker appears. It guides you up a building, and leads to a chopper getting taken out. There are two further phases like this, just keep avoiding choppers, and eating men until the marker appears. As soon as it does so, get there as quickly as possible.

Green Goblin

Back as Spider-Man, your snooping around has you run into the Green Goblin, and again you have to give chase. Follow closely by swinging and web zipping, careful of the tight corners. He stops from time to time to throw fireballs your way. They tend to come in pairs, and the best way to avoid them is to double jump in one direction, the web-zip another way.

He takes out a billboard at one point, and you have to grab it and use L&R to pick it up to save the people. He throws fireballs whilst you’re trying to save the people. , so you have to be very quick. Careful though. As the green bar you aim for moves to the middle, and mid-way through you have to slow down to keep it in the green.

When you get to fight the Goblin, it’s just a case of learning his routine. You can’t hurt him whilst he’s aflame, so you have to wait. He throws fireballs that can be avoided with double jumps, then he jumps at you, swing or zip out of the way. Next he throws a double fire ball, double jump them zip to avoid this. Now he’s weak, and the flames are out, so jump in and kick, then land a few punched before he lights up again. Repeated this four or five times, until his energy is half way down, they you take the fight inside. He throws fireballs, then repeatedly tries to jump on you. After three jumps he’ll charge up, and when he lands fire will spread out from him. At this moment he’s weak, so jump over the flames and attack him. As much of the ground stays on fire, I found it best to stay in the air. By swinging across the room and back you’re too fast for his fireballs. It’s a bit hard to spot when he’s charged and landed, but you can hear the fire ball spreading, so when it does so jump for him and attack until his energy is completely depleted.

Beetle 2

Now Venom gets to have a go with Beetle. Use the big-jump to cover large distances quickly, and you should have too much trouble keeping up in the chase.

You’ll arrive in a warehouse, and have chance to attack him. He flies around, dropping bombs, so keep jumping to avoid these. When he lands attack with tentacles. If he’s flying around with his laser out, wait until he gets near, then hit out with your tentacles.

Once he’s about half-way dead he’ll start to open pits in the floor. He lands in one of the four corners, so get close and attack with tentacles. He uses his laser, sometimes sweeping across the screen, and sometimes large blasts, from either just jump back out of the way (careful of the pits) and wait for him to land in another corner before resuming the attack. Repeat until he’s dead.

Sable 2

Sable stops you as Peter Parker, and you have to fight without webs, which makes it a little more challenging. You can still jump though, so stay in the air to avoid her, and attack with a double jump and kick. Back off and repeat. Whenever she has men come to her aid, take these out separately, and quickly as these too have guns. Double jump in and kick, then repeat, so Sable can’t attack you whilst you’re taking them out.

When Sable is almost dealt with, an accident will happen and you’ll have to save loads of people on the bridge. Start with the car that’s hanging off the edge. Grab and use L&R to pull it to safety. Save the person in the car behind you, then climb up to the man hanging up high, and bring him down to the ground. Next go to the final silver car, and pull the woman out of there. Each of these people has a timer, indicating how long you have to save each. It is possible to get the woman out of the silver car before climbing up to save the man – it depends on how quickly you can climb!

Venom Chase

Now you have to chase after Venom, and boy is he fast. Swing and web-zip to keep up as best you can. Half the time you can’t see him, so you have to glance at the map to make sure you’re not too high, and that you’re heading in the right direction. Again with this one it’s a case of trying again and again, until you’re really familiar with the path he takes, so that you can cut corners skipping past the odd building.

Eventually you’ll get to fight him again, which is pretty much the same as before. Wait for him to roar, and jump in with a kick. He throws cars at you too now, so web-zip out the way of these. You also have to keep Sable alive, but as long as you don’t go too far away, he won’t pay her much attention.

Carnage

Back as Venom, you now have to take on Carnage, who is rather similar to Venom in his attacks. Keep your distance and use tentacles. Watch out for his tentacle attack, which comes shortly after he screams. Throwing him will give you time to feed on a few people if needed. Don’t leave him unattended though, as he can heal himself. Chase him through doors, opening them with L&R, and continue the pattern of attacking from distance with tentacles and throwing objects. Attack in close to stop him from healing himself if you need to. You might take a hit, but it will save time in having to break his energy down again.

Venom and the Helicopter

Back as Spider-Man, you now have to fight Venom, and stop him from pushing the helicopter over the edge. You can’t jump in on him when he’s attacking the copter, as the blades will hit you. Luckily he’s paying more attention to that than you, so you can approach and land a few blows to get his attention. He’ll turn, so zip away. He’ll come after you for a while, throwing barrels and the like. Again, attack after he roars. Try to keep his attention, and stop him from going back to the helicopter. If he does, attack him again right away to stop it falling too far.

As the fight goes on, fire will spread along the top of the building, leaving little room to fight in. If you hit Venom, there’s space on the right of the platform to escape to before he turns. Now he’s quite focused on the helicopter, so you may have to go back to him right away. Keep repeating the pattern, not letting his stay with the helicopter for too long, otherwise he’ll push it over the edge and you’ll have to start the battle all over again.

Once he’s down you can see the final cut-scene and learn the truth. What’s more, in the game you can now play as Venom in free-roam. There are a number of Venom races, and you can have fun attacking people. Hooray!
