Retro Game Walkthroughs for Mario Superstar Baseball (Gamecube)

This guide should help you pick a team of winners and give you tips with winning in certain stadiums.

Important things to remember

When batting, remember if your character is too weak to get a home run don’t charge your swing. Simply press the button and aim for the right or left field just outside the diamond. Fielders are never in that area.
If your batter is a big hitter charge just as the pitch is coming as charger way earlier causes you chances of hitting a home run to lower.
When pitching remember to mix it up. Don’t simply throw balls that go inside the good ball area. Try throwing some foul balls and see if he wings for it.
Switching pitchers around is a great way of confusing the batter as each character has different pitching patterns to learn.
Try stealing bases even if the batter misses it as you might get lucky. If not then simply be alert to run back to you base.
Keep your speedy fielders out the back field as these are the ones that will do much of the running. They have the best chance of reaching a ball far away from them.
Remember characters that work well together mean more accurate throws, better batting and better pitching!
Bunting is very rarely useful. Go for the bat as you are more than likely to get and out or even two with a bunt. Hitting it you may not.

What characters to pick for your team?

Balanced Characters

Mario
Batting 6
Pitching 6
Fielding 6
Running 5

Mario’s fireball pitch isn’t too good as batters should find it easy to hit it in no time. However his batting is great for allowing runners on bases to progress as if someone catches it they get set on fire. Mario’s real weakness though lies with his legs. He is a poor runner and you need to get a good hit in order to make first base. His batting is fairly good and his pitching too.

Luigi
Batting 5
Pitching 6
Fielding 6
Running 6

Like his brother in almost every way except his batting is slightly worse and his running slightly faster. His star batting and pitching is exactly the same as Mario’s but his flame is green. In my book though his less talented batting is bad news as you’ll find getting deep hits can prove quite difficult. His pitching is fairly good and his speed ok.

Daisy
Batting 6
Pitching 7
Fielding 5
Running 4

Daisy is quite good and has a great star bat and pitch. The great thing about her star move is that when you bat the flowers mask where the ball actually is, and when you are pitching the same thing happens again and can really throw off the opponent. Her speed however is bad but she contains great pitching skill and can bend the ball quite well.

Birdo
Batting 6
Pitching 4
Fielding 5
Running 4

To me Birdo is absolutely dire. She isn’t fast, she can’t pitch and her batting is only alright. Her star batting is quite useful and causes the ball to turn into a pink spotted egg that bounces randomly. The pitch is also just as hard to predict. Her ability to suck up the ball whilst fielding however is very useful. But the lack of speed and pitching means she should be avoided.

Toad (Red)
Batting 5
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 6

Toad doesn’t have too great batting skills and his quality lies with his speed. His speed means fielding is quite easy but don’t use him as a pitcher.

Shy Guy (Red)
Batting 6
Pitching 5
Fielding 5
Running 4

Shy guy is a character that surprises me so much. While his speed isn’t great, his batting more than makes up for it. He is known to score homeruns quite frequently and his pitching is fairly good for a secondary character but his fielding is not so good.

Goomba
Batting 4
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 5

Batting is somewhat of a problem, but his running is good. Fielding he throws very badly and his pitching is best left alone.

Koopa Troopa (Red)
Batting 6
Pitching 4
Fielding 5
Running 4

Koopa is reliable when it comes to batting. You can be sure a single is fairly easy. His throwing arm is quite good when it comes to fielding and pitching. His running again has seen better.

Technique Characters

Peach
Batting 4
Pitching 8
Fielding 7
Running 5

Peach has a special pitch and swing similar to that of Daisy only the ball is hidden by hearts instead of flowers. Her batting isn’t so great. (It doesn’t help when you swing the bat like a golf club) but her pitching is great as is her fielding. Running again though isn’t too hot.

Waluigi
Batting 4
Pitching 9
Fielding 4
Running 4

If you pick Waluigi it’s because of his pitching arm. Don’t pick him for any other reason as he is terrible in other areas. He had a deadly fastball and can curve the ball so well. His running and fielding isn’t good and his batting will see you hitting it no further than the diamond most of the time. His Liar Ball though is quite good but not as great as Peach and Daisy’s. As he pitches the ball, it shakes and splits making hitting harder. When batting the ball again splits into two. One real one fake.

Dixie Kong
Batting 2
Pitching 5
Fielding 6
Running 6

Her batting is downright awful but elsewhere she isn’t a bad player. She can field really well and has great speed, but her pitching is just okay.

Boo
Batting 3
Pitching 8
Fielding 2
Running 4

He is a great pitcher and is useful if your first choice pitcher gets tired. He can swerve the ball and pitches fairly fast. Fielding is horrible as he has tiny arms that can’t throw and his running is ok. But batting can be good if you can keep it in the diamond rather than hitting foul balls. His hit always curls, usually out. Master it and you got a good player.

Toadsworth
Batting 4
Pitching 4
Fielding 6
Running 4

Toadsworth has a great arm for throwing but don’t let this lead you to believe he can pitch too. Running isn’t great probably because he’s an old man but fielding is great and batting is ok too.

Koopa Paratroopa (Red)
Batting 3
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 6

This character is fast and can field ok but his batting is hard to master mainly because his floating makes judgement difficult. I suggest not pitching with him as it isn’t the best out there.

Magikoopa (Blue)
Batting 4
Pitching 2
Fielding 8
Running 2

Don’t expect him to run nor pitch too well but he can field better than most. His magic wad allows him to have balls float to him if they are slightly away. His batting is fairly good too and finding the sweet spot is quite easy on his bat.

Dry Bones (Grey)
Batting 5
Pitching 4
Fielding 3
Running 4

He can bat really well and his pitching is alright too but he lacks the ability to field well and he runs quite slow too.

Speed Characters

Yoshi
Batting 5
Pitching 4
Fielding 6
Running 9

He is the fastest character in the game and has good batting skills too. His speed makes reaching a base much easier even with a poor hit and his batting can even sometimes make home runs. To me his batting is very Mario-like. Fielding too he is great and can catch balls with his tongue. But pitching he isn’t very good. His special is the same as Birdo’s.

Diddy Kong
Batting 3
Pitching 6
Fielding 7
Running 7

To me one of the best characters in the game. He is good in the areas you need to be. His running is fast enough and his fielding is awesome. Pitching too is good enough to consider him as a secondary or primary pitcher. His batting means you won’t get any far hits but singles are possible but very hard with his batting stance. His special pitch is a banana shaped curve ball that isn’t too spectacular. His hit though sends the ball in a similar angle making fielding it hard.

Baby Mario
Batting 3
Pitching 5
Fielding 3
Running 7

I personally am not a big fan of the babies. Their batting is quite bad and while they are very fast, their fielding is very difficult to control as they move so quickly. Pitching is useable but pick others over these two.

Baby Luigi
Batting 2
Pitching 5
Fielding 3
Running 8

Slightly faster than Baby Mario and less powerful than him too. Again not a great fan of Mario’s younger sibling.

Toadette
Batting 2
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 9

Her batting is terrible and so is her pitching. Fielding again is very standard. The fact that she is very very fast doesn’t make up for the fact that she is terrible everywhere else.

Monty Mole
Batting 3
Pitching 3
Fielding 5
Running 7

His speed is helpful when it comes to running bases and also catching balls that look unreachable to other characters. His batting is very difficult to get the hand of and his pitching won’t impress you at all.

Paragoomba
Batting 3
Pitching 2
Fielding 5
Running 7

To me he has problems when selecting him. Batting him will causes more difficulties than solutions. He is hard to bat with and tends to hit the ball high for an easy out. He may be fast and his fielding good too but don’t pitch with him.

Noki (Blue)
Batting 3
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 7

Fairly fast and fielding is fairly good too. The pitching and batting may seem low, but this character is quite surprising at times with high moments.

Power Characters

Donkey Kong
Batting 8
Pitching 7
Fielding 4
Running 4

Donkey Kong is a great batter. A majority of the time you will score a homerun with him. However, you must first learn how to bat with him as using a punching glove makes things harder to judge. His pitching is also off putting as with such long arms he throws from and angle. His running is also fairly good too and fielding not too shabby. Has a star power same as Diddy Kong

Bowser
Batting 9
Pitching 9
Fielding 1
Running 1

Very over hyped. Yes he does have a high pitching skill, but he cannot bend the ball whatsoever. He can throw it so fast, but do this against a human opponent and they will figure out that the ball will go straight and get a home run more than likely. However he is incredible at batting but to compensate for this he’s the slowest in the game. Best keep him as a backstop when it comes to fielding. His special bat shoots a bullet bill out that will cause the catcher to skid back several feet before being able to throw it giving you enough time to reach a base. The pitch though cause the ball to do a loop before reaching the batter.

King Boo
Batting 7
Pitching 5
Fielding 4
Running 3

Like little boo his swings are hard to control. He will curve it very well which makes it difficult to tell where it will go. But master him and you can score many homeruns. He can pitch alright too and fielding is okay but he’s fairly slow.

Wario
Batting 8
Pitching 3
Fielding 4
Running 3

His batting isn’t as good as made out to be as he will more than likely hit it very high and nothing else. His pitching also doesn’t have much movement. Fielding is alright and he’s quite slow. But he is very funny to watch play! His special is the same as Waluigi.

Bowser Jr.
Batting 8
Pitching 5
Fielding 3
Running 4

Bowser Jr. is quite powerful and has a little speed to him too that you wouldn’t expect. His pitching is also alright but his fielding isn’t too hot as he can’t throw too well. His special powers are the same as his fathers.

Pianta (Blue)
Batting 6
Pitching 3
Fielding 5
Running 2

Move on past this character when it comes to picking a power character. He will more than likely hit fly balls that will cause outs. He can’t run nor can he field too well but for some reason his pitching isn’t half bad.

Petey Piranha
Batting 9
Pitching 4
Fielding 3
Running 1

His batting is devastating similar to Bowser’s and he can throw very fast too so best leave him deep field. He is very very slow though and his pitching isn’t great either.

Hammer Bro
Batting 8
Pitching 3
Fielding 3
Running 3

They seem average, but choose one of the brothers and home runs will reward your decision. They are very powerful, and believe it or not they can run fairly well too. But their pitching is poor.

In your team it’s idea to have a range of characters that include at least two power hitters and two great pitchers. To fill the other spots try find character that are useful at fielding and running (Diddy) and ones that can bat fairly well too. Also trying to find characters that work well together helps too as it increases the chances of home runs and outs.

Stadiums and their hazards

Mario Stadium

Not much you need to know about this, other than it’s a basic baseball pitch with no hazards.

Peach Garden

Chances are you will hit the item blocks ahead and you can’t do anything about it. Great news for catches who can make an easy out but bad news for batters. However if you can hit the ball on a musical note block you will get a home run. But that is very rare.

DK Jungle

The KlapTraps will hook onto your fielders and slow them down, but you won’t notice this too much. The main concern is the shooting barrels that roll down your outfield. When batting try aiming the ball just to the outside of the diamond. A barrel may hit the fielder and know the ball out of his hand so you can advance more bases.

Yoshi Park

The only thing you have to worry about are the tiny plants that form into Piranha plants when you approach them. Do not under any circumstances touch them as you will be knocked out. If a ball lands in his mouth he will spit it in a random direction so try to be alert and you could make a catch.

Wario Palace

The first obstacle are the two hurricane generators in the centre pitch. Hit a ball into them and the ball will spin wildly out of control somewhere else. The next are the giant chain chomps at the corners of the field that attack fielders who go near them and deflect balls that hit them.

Bowser Castle

Fire pits shoot fireballs that set you fielders rear ends on fire. Not nice. Try hitting balls in that direction to cause this to happen. Huge Thwomps prevent home runs being hit most of the time so big hitters are needed for this.
