Retro Game Walkthroughs for Canis Canem Edit (PlayStation 2)
Submitted By: Hannard
This is a basic hint guide for Bully aka Canis Canem Edit - it's not a full walkthrough, not least because you have a fair amount of freedom in the game, but it should make the game a little easier.

Stick with it
---------------

First things first - it may seem that Bully's play area is fairly small, including just the school itself. I certainly was ready to send the game back, but the fact is that the play area is in fact much larger than this. Once you complete the first chapter, you're given access to a much much larger area including the whole town, a carnival, a boxing club and much more.

Everybody Hates You
-------------------

During the game, you'll find that pretty much everyone will attack you at some point. You can stand and fight, but if you find the rest of their friends laying in, it's best to run away. You don't get any experience bonus for fighting. Even the nerds will try and kick your head off at some point.

A Typical School Day
-----------------------------

Once you've settled into the school, you'll have to deal with the school schedule. Morning lessons start at 9.00 and carry on till 11.30. They then re-commence at 1.00 and carry on till 3.30. There are two lessons. It does benefit you to attend classes - more details a little further down - since you learn certain skills. And while prefects and policemen will drag you to class if you get caught by them, no-one will hunt you down terminator-style wherever you are. You can hiding in a bin for the whole of the school day if you want. When it's 7.00, it's curfew which means you'll get taken back to your down to sleep if you're caught. If you don't go to sleep by 2.00, you'll fall asleep anyway. So if you're in town, you'll wake up where you slept. If you're in the school, however, you'll wake up in school. And the day begins again (there are apparently no weekends in Rockstar's world)

Authority Figures and how to avoid them
-------------------------------------------------------

Since you only usually see teachers during lessons and cut-scenes, you don't really have to worry about them. Your main problem will be the prefects and policemen. The prefects are encountered in school and the policemen are encounter when you're about town. Both will catch if you're skipping class, or if you're wanted for causing trouble. Unless you've done something like hit an adult or a girl, you can hit the highlighted key when the catch up with you to stamp on their foot and run away. You can also outrun them as they can only run so far before the get out of breath and fall behind. But the best way of dealing with them is simply not to be seen. It doesn't matter if you're in their direct line of sight or not - as long as you're not within the red/white cone of vision that's highlighted on the map they won't see you. If you can't avoid their cone of sight then hide in something like a bin, wait for them to go past and then jump out.

Getting into trouble
--------------------------

A lot of things will get you into trouble - the more bad things you do, the more likely the teachers and policemen are to come after you.Hitting other people will get you into trouble. Retaliating when people hit you first will still get you into a bit of trouble, but not as much as actually landing the first blow. Smashing items and ducking class will also increase your wanted level - and when your wanted level hits red then all the prefects will try to catch you. Hitting adults or girls will make your wanted level red straight away and when the prefects catch you, you'll have no chance to escape, because these are considered major crimes. Being in places where you shouldn't be, such as the girls dorm, will also get attention from the prefects. Once you're wanted, your only means of escape is to keep out of view until your wanted rating goes down, or to get to the dorms and go to sleep.

Places of interest and getting around
-------------------------------------------------

After chapter one, you have free reign to wander around most of the school and town. It's worth visiting the carnival, as you can win bonus items such as T-Shirts to wear. There's also a hobo behind the school bus who will teach you special moves if you find him transistor parts, though you can easily complete the game without any of his special moves. There's clothes shops both inside and outside the school and a supply shop inside town. Basically, just wander around and have fun exploring. You can get around on foot or on a bike - or even on a scooter, though in the latter case you need to find a helmet otherwise the police will arrest you. To get back to school easily, just find a bus stop, as marked on your map, move up to one and push the action button.

Making Money
--------------------

You'll be given money for completing most of the main missions, but you can also make cash by completing side missions. You find these by, well, standing still really. Since whether you're in town or in school, people just come up to you asking you to get items for them or so forth. Complete these missions and you'll get some money, and you keep doing side-missions till you get enough cash.

Dress Code
----------------

You can buy extra clothes from the shop in the school, as well as a couple of shops in town and also win the odd shirt from the carnival. Some missions require you to wear a certain shirt but mostly the clothes are for show. Make sure you change into school uniform when you're in school as if you're not in uniform, the prefects will chase you down.

Weapons and items
---------------------------

There are a variety of items you can get your hands on during the game. There are only three that really count. The first are apples and so forth which give you extra health. Next, there's the catapult which is great at taking down foes without getting too close, or for taking down foes you can't reach. And finally, there's the bottle rocket launcher which isn't as accurate as the catapult and has limited ammo, but is a lot stronger. The rest of the items aren't worth bothering with - the stinkbombs, for example, are pretty useless. Yes, they clear out an area, but only for a short period of time and you're best off just hiding till anyone leaves the area anyway. Presents can be used to get girls to kiss you but you can get loads other health power-ups anyway.

Class is Skill!
--------------------

Aside from the skills you can learn by taking a found transistor to the hobo behind the bus, most skills are acquired by attending classes. These include photography, chemistry, english, shop class and gym. Attending each class will present you with a task, usually some sort of glorified reaction timer style thing or minigame which, when completed, will give you a new ability. For example, completing English class gives you the ability to kiss any girl who's interested in you without having to give them a present. There are five ability levels for each class, and once you've got to level 5, you don't need to attend that class again. There's no way to cheat your way through any of these events - although you can make the English task, which requires you to unscramble words, easier by writing the word down, pausing the game and working the words out on a piece of paper.

Fighting Talk
------------------

Fairly often you'll find yourself getting into a fight. Some fights can be avoided by running away, others such as the boss fights, can't. Fighting is a fairly easy business - if you've got any of the special moves from the hobo behind the bus, use them. If not, get in close, block any incoming attacks and then punch back, and the moment your opponent falls over put the boot in. If your opponent is capable of smashing through your blocks, like the Russell character is, then just stand back and use your catapult which has infinite ammo. It's best not to end up fighting against too many foes.

Missions
------------

The missions in Bully are fairly run of the mill. There are escort missions, sneaking missions and even ones where you have to infiltrate a nerd's stronghold. Make sure you stock up on rockets and health items before any mission and you should be okay. The only thing to watch out for is the people you're supposed to be protecting during the escort missions. Given that most of the combat in the game is done close up, it's quite easy to accidentally hit your allies, so it's best to lure the enemies away from them, and then lay into them.

Endgame
-------------

And that's it. There's a lot of messing around to be had when the game's finished, as you're given the chance to complete any missions you've not finished so far. Personally, I found the replayability of the game wasn't as high as that of San Andreas but it was well worth playing through at least once.
