This game is also available on DS.
--------------------
2. BASIC CONTROLS
--------------------
Run-Wii Remote: Shake up and down.
Nunchuk Mode: Shake Wii Remote and Nunchuk alternatively.
Can get very tiring, especially after a 100m sprint. This is also used in
Field events to run on the runway.
Swim-Wii Remote: Shake in direction of swim stroke indicated.
Nunchuk Mode: Shake Wii Remote and Nunchuk in direction of swim
stroke indicated.
A good few minutes of this can tire you out. Swim styles include butterfly,
crawl, underwater running and breaststroke.
Jump-Wii Remote/Nunchuk Mode: Swing the Wii Remote or Nunchuk vertically.
This is required in some field events and the trampoline.
Move-Wii Remote: D-Pad
Nunchuk Mode: Control Stick
In individual epee, you use the D-pad/Control Stick to move your character.
---------------------------
3. EVENTS
-------------------------------
Mario & Sonic compromises 20 Olympic events and 4 Dream events, in 9 categories:
Athletics; Gymnastics; Shooting; Rowing; Archery; Aquatics; Fencing; Table
Tennis and Dream Events. Each event has its own unique controls and all require
the motion-sensors of the Wiimote. Ready...set...
3.1 /ATHLETICS\
3.1.1 100M
Controls: When it says ready, hold B. When Go! Appears, release B and lower the
Wiimote to start running. Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk alternatively to run
faster to the finish.
How to unlock: Available at start
This event is simply a 100m sprint to the finish. Fastest racer wins.
Top Tip: You go faster if you shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk with a higher
frequency, not a longer gesture. Combined with a speed type (Sonic, Shadow etc.)
you will go supersonic.
Outsider Tip: This tip was submitted by UncleSamPatriot.
Instead of doing the method shown in the control screen, try to shake the
Wiimote and Nunchuk together with a short gesture length.
3.1.2 110M HURDLES
Controls: Same controls as 100m, but press B at the right time to jump over
hurdles.
How to unlock: Available at start
Again a sprint, but it has an extra 10m and 10 hurdles standing in your way
before the goal.
Top Tip: If you press B at exactly the right time, you will actually go faster.
Timing is key.
3.1.3 400M
Controls: When Ready appears, Hold B. When Go! appears, release B and lower the
Wiimote to start running. Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk alternatively to run,
but if you shake too hard, your character will run out of stamina. Stop shaking
to regain stamina. During the final 100m, hold A while shaking your controller
to sprint.
How to unlock: Unlock the Comet Circuit (Medal in Planet Circuit)
This is a hard event to master. Shake too hard and you’ll run out of puff. Shake
too little and you’re trailing in last place.
Top Tip: Play as a character with a good combination of speed and stamina, like
Amy or Luigi.
3.1.4 400M HURDLES
Controls: Same controls as 400m, except when you reach a hurdle press B to jump
over it.
How to unlock: Unlock Meteorite Circuit (Medal in Sunlight Circuit)
Somewhat a bit easier than 400m, but make sure to watch out for the hurdles as
well as your stamina.
Top Tip: Same as 400m, but also press B to jump a hurdle at exactly the right
time to get a boost.
3.1.5 4X100M RELAY
Controls: Same starting procedure. Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk alternatively
to run. When Speed locked appears, stop shaking. Press B then lower the Wiimote
at the right time to pass the baton.
How to unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and
Saturn Circuits)
4 teams of 4 each run 100m to the finish. Just watch your own teammates.
Top Tip: If you pass the baton at the right time, you will speed up. Perfect
timing can win this race.
3.1.6 LONG JUMP
Controls: At the athletes’ introduction, draw the Wiimote and Nunchuk in a
clapping motion to draw applause. When Go! appears, shake the Wiimote and
Nunchuk alternatively to run. When Speed Locked appears, stop shaking. Raise the
Wiimote before the board to jump.
How to unlock: Available at start
Simply run up and jump as far as you can. This is a tough event to master.
Top Tip: If you raise the Wiimote to the right level at the right time, GREAT!
will appear and you’ll jump super-long.
3.1.7 TRIPLE JUMP
Controls: Same running procedure as Long Jump. At the takeoff board, raise the
Wiimote, then the Nunchuk and the Wiimote again to jump.
How to unlock: Available at start
This is like the long jump, but you jump three times instead of one. Sneaky.
Top Tip: Getting a GREAT! each time will make you jump super-far.
3.1.8 JAVELIN THROW
Controls: Same running procedure as Long and Triple Jump. Before the line, hold
A+B and swing the Wiimote down to throw.
How to unlock: Available at start
This event I actually found easy, but the Bowser mission on this is another
story.
Top Tip: Throwing at the right time + high running speed = massive distance.
3.1.9 HAMMER THROW
Controls: At the start, press A to start swinging the hammer. Rotate the Wiimote
to build up power. Press B to throw the hammer before the countdown otherwise
it’s a foul.
How to unlock: Available at start
Throwing a massive ball attached to a rope? That could be dangerous. Do not try
this at home.
Top Tip: Play as a power type and aim for the middle. Result: long distance.
3.1.10 HIGH JUMP
Controls: Same running procedure as Long Jump. When Speed Locked appears, stop
shaking the Wiimote and Nunchuk. Raise the Wiimote in the orange or blue zone to
jump. Swing the Nunchuk up to raise your legs as you pass over the bar.
How to unlock: Unlock Planet Circuit (Medal in Stardust Circuit)
Lets just hope Mario and Sonic don’t break their necks doing this.
Top Tip: Jump later on and you might just keep going. Don’t wait too long
however, otherwise you’ll miss.
3.1.11 POLE VAULT
Controls: Same running procedure as above. When Speed Locked appears, stop
shaking the Wiimote and Nunchuk. Raise the Wiimote in the blue or orange zone to
plant your pole. Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk to build up recoil. Finally,
raise the Nunchuk to put your legs over the bar.
How to unlock: Unlock Supernova Circuit (Medal in Meteorite Circuit)
Mario, Sonic, if you’re listening, you’d better get some life insurance.
Attempting this without training is suicide.
Top Tip: Not much advice I can give you, but good timing makes you clear the
bar.
/3.2 GYMNASTICS\
3.2.1 TRAMPOLINE
Controls: Swing the Wiimote upwards to jump. If you jump at the right time, you
go higher. When you’re high enough, commands will appear. Do these commands to
make your character perform complex moves. These commands vary from pushing
buttons to twisting the Wiimote. Before you hit the trampoline, jump to keep
bouncing.
How to unlock: Available at start
What a lot of controls! However complex, this event is fun.
Top Tip: Timing is key. Do the commands correctly without mistakes to increase
your score. Also, although the commands say to twist the Wiimote, a shake will
do the same thing. It works.
3.2.2 VAULT
Controls: When Go! appears, shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk alternatively to run.
When your character lands on the springboard, raise the Wiimote to jump up.
Shake the Nunchuk alone, Wiimote alone or Wiimote and Nunchuk together to do
different actions in the air. If you stagger, shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk
alternatively to recover.
How to unlock: Unlock Supernova Circuit (Medal in Meteorite Circuit)
This event is difficult to master. I still don’t know how I won it first time.
Top Tip: The best performances require timing and concentration. Make sure you
have both.
/3.3 SHOOTING\
3.3.1 SKEET
Controls: At the start, press B when the dot is in the middle to get a better
aim. When the target enters the circle, press B to fire.
How to unlock: Available at start
This event is actually quite easy. Once you get the hang of it.
Top Tip: Press B at the right time and your circle is massive. Bingo, results.
/3.4 AQUATICS\
3.4.1 100M FREESTYLE
Controls: When Ready... appears, hold B to build up power. When Go! appears,
lower the Wiimote and release B to make your character jump into the water.
Depending on your character stroke, move the Wiimote and Nunchuk around.
Front Crawl: Alternatively, thrust the Wiimote and Nunchuk back and forth.
Underwater Running/Dog Paddle: Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk alternatively.
Butterfly: Move the Wiimote and Nunchuk together up and down in a swatting
motion.
Breaststroke: Draw the Wiimote and Nunchuk together in a clapping motion.
Croc Paddle: Move the Wiimote and Nunchuk together side to side.
When your stamina gets low, press B to recover. Press B at the right time to get
a boost. When your character reaches the end of the lane, lower the Wiimote to
turn round.
How to unlock: Available at start
Phew, what a lot of controls! This event is tiring. Compared to this, the 100m
is a run round the block.
Top Tip: Get a good start. GET A GOOD START!
3.4.2 4X100M FREESTYLE
Controls: Same as 100m Freestyle, but to change characters, lower the Wiimote.
How to unlock: Available at start
Be prepared for a physical workout.
Top Tip: Same as above.
/3.5 FENCING\
3.5.1 INDIVIDUAL EPEE
Controls: Use the Control Stick/D-Pad to move around. Thrust the Wiimote to
perform a lunge attack. When your opponent attacks, press A to parry him and
knock him off balance. If your opponent parries then press B to do a feint and
make your opponent’s parry miss.
How to unlock: Available at start
Note: As the manual states, never EVER imitate fencing moves without protective
equipment.
This event is as violent as Mario & Sonic gets.
Top Tip: Your opponent’s eyes flicker a split second before they attack. Prepare
to parry.
/3.6 TABLE TENNIS\
3.6.1 SINGLES
Controls: Swing the Wiimote to return the ball. Swing early, late or with
perfect timing to make the ball go left, right or straight respectively. Hold A
while swinging to perform a chop. This can return high speed balls albeit at a
slower rate. Hold B while swinging to perform a smash. This returns balls at
high speed but the timing is difficult, so watch out.
How to unlock: Available at start
I have utterly mastered this one. I beat my sister 15-1!
Top Tip: Use smashes on slow balls. They’re easier to hit.
/3.7 ROWING\
3.7.1 SINGLE SCULLS
Controls: Follow the actions on screen while moving the Wiimote and Nunchuk back
and forth.
How to unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and
Saturn Circuits)
This event is way too easy. I almost beat the World Record first time.
Top Tip: Do the actions quickly and 3 music notes will appear, making you go
faster.
/3.8 ARCHERY\
Controls: When the Wiimote cursor appears, hold A and B and pull the Wiimote
back to prepare to shoot. This will give you a slightly closer view of the
target. Tilt the Nunchuk to move the Nunchuk cursor around. Line up the Wiimote
and Nunchuk cursors and release A and B to shoot.
How to unlock: Unlock Stardust Circuit (Medal in Moonlight Circuit)
It’s probably easier to play it for real than on the Wii, unless you’ve had
practised this a lot.
Top Tip: Play as a skill type (Tails, Waluigi etc.) and watch the wind.
/3.9 DREAM EVENTS\
3.9.1 DREAM RACE
Controls: When Ready... appears, hold B to build up power. When Go! appears,
lower the Wiimote and release B to start running. Shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk
alternatively to run. When your power meter is full you are at full speed and if
you stop shaking, your speed will remain constant unless you hit an obstacle.
Move the Control Stick on the Nunchuk to go from side to side. If you run into
an item box, you’ll gain an item. Press A to use the item.
How to unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and
Saturn Circuits)
Too many controls...TOO MANY CONTROLS! But hey, this event is a 3-lap running
race, with items and dangerous obstacles.
Top Tip: The speed chevrons not only give you a speed boost, but also erase
Boos, the most annoying power-ups.
3.9.2 DREAM PLATFORM
Controls: This event is not a race. Use the Control Stick to steer your
character through the air. Keep the Wiimote level to accelerate and pull the
Wiimote up to slow down. If you pass through a ring, you’ll enter performance
mode. Perform the commands quickly to get a speed boost and points. If you hit
an item box in mid-air, you’ll get an item. Press A to use your item.
How to unlock: Unlock Galaxy Circuit (Medal in Cosmos Circuit)
This is the last event to unlock. Quite enjoyable as well.
Top Tip: Avoid the blocks. They lose you points and slow you down. That’s
annoying.
3.9.3 DREAM FENCING
Controls: Same as individual epee, except as you perform moves; your special
attack meter fills up. When it fills up, press A and B at the same time and
lunge the Wiimote forward to do a special attack.
How to unlock: Unlock Satellite Circuit (Medal in Comet Circuit)
Nothing like a bit of special attack combat, right?
Top Tip: Drive your opponent to the end of the court, then unleash your special
attack. Ring out! More damage to them than usual.
3.9.4 DREAM TABLE TENNIS
Controls: Same as Singles, except as you return the ball; your special attack
meter fills up. When it fills up, press A and B as you swing to do a special
move. Also the points are based on the number of times the ball is returned.
How to unlock: Unlock Sunlight Circuit (Medal in Satellite Circuit)
Some of the special moves are funny, especially Wario’s. He slams the ball with
his bum!
Top Tip: Use your special attack only when the rally is high or your opponent is
using theirs.

any tips and wish to submit them, please email me at the address at the end of
the guide.
