[7.2] Saving Your Game
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To save your game, you must enter your Hideout. Your Hideout appears as a green house icon on your radar. Your Hideout is specific to each district. For example, if you are in Staunton Island, your radar will point you to your Staunton Island hideout, and not your hideout in Portland.
Each hideout has a garage and some sort of entrance.
Portland - Door
Staunton Island - Elevator
Shoreside Vale - Foyer
Entering your hideout will bring up a save game dialogue. Each hideout also comes with a garage, where you can park a car to save it for use when you load your game. Each save will repair the car if it's damaged. Each district offers the ability to save more cars.
You can't save when your doing a mission, and saving your game advances the game clock by six hours.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.3] Wasted
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting wasted is bad, but I'm sure you already know that. There are many ways to get "offed" in Liberty City:
Drowning
Shot
Run over
Blown up
Crushed
Burned (catching fire)
When you get wasted, you lost some money and are taken to the hospital. Your health will be reset at 100, but you will lose money, any weapons you had, and the mission you were working on (if any) will automatically fail.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.4] Busted
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting busted is just as bad as getting wasted. There is only one way to get busted: having a cop arrest you. To get arrested, you must be pulled out of a vehicle and have a Wanted Level, or you'll just be shot. When your arrested, your taken to the police station, and you'll lose some money (you have to bribe the cops, you know?) and all your weapons. Any mission you were working on will automatically fail.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.5] Your Wanted Level
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the top right of your screen are six black stars. This represents your Wanted Level, or how much the cops want your ass. As you do illegal things, like killing and carjacking, your Wanted Level will increase. As your level increases, more and more authorities are sent after you.
LEVEL AUTHORITIES
----- -----------
1 Cops, level 1 (not too tough)
2 Cops, level 2 (much tougher and more persistent)
3 SWAT, level 1 (tough and persistent), as well as a helicopter
4 SWAT, level 2 (very tough and very persistent), helicopter remains
5 FBI (very, very tough driving fast, black cars)
6 Army (including tank) and another helicopter
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.6] How To Increase Your Wanted Level
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You want to increase your Wanted Level. Why? Well, I'm not one to ask, so here's what you can do to piss them off.
- Run over people
- Shoot people
- Beat up people
All of the above takes a few kills to get them after you. For example, kill four or five people and you'll get your first star. If a cop is in the vicinity when you kill someone, you'll get that star immediately.
- Steal a car
If you do this while a cop is watching, your wanted level will increase. If you do this when no cops are around, you're fine.
- Steal a cop car
If you try to carjack a cop car, you'll get a star immediately, and the cop driving said car will get out and try to arrest you.
- Targeting a cop
If you target a cop with a weapon, you will get a star. Doesn't matter if you shoot or not, you'll get that star just for aiming at him.
- Hit a cop car
If you hit a cop car hard enough to make him drop his donut, he'll come after you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.7] How To Decrease Your Wanted Level
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throughout the city are star icons. These are called "Police Bribes" and will take your Wanted Level down one star at a time.
For Wanted Levels 1 and 2, hang by your hideout and do nothing. The stars will eventually go away. For levels 3-6, the only way to get rid of the stars is to find Police Bribes or get your car sprayed. If your driving a police car and need to rid yourself of stars, then hop into a civilian car, because the pay and spray shop won't repaint cop cars.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.8] Running and Exercise
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When on foot, it's much better to run than to walk. Unfortunately, you get tired from running too long, and your character will slow down until he gets to a walk. Stopping will allow him to catch his breath, then you'll be able to run again.
However, you should try to run a lot. Over time, your guy will build up
strength and stamina by running, and you'll be able to run a lot longer before having to catch your breath.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7.9] Shooting
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You have various weapons at your disposal. Handguns, uzi's, you name it. You can fire your weapon in various ways. Some weapons you must remain still while firing, others allow you to run and fire.
One of the coolest features of GTA3 are drive-bys. To accomplish this, you must have an Uzi selected BEFORE you get in a car. When you're in the car, press and hold either L2 or R2 (left and right windows, respectively) and hold CIRCLE. This will cause you to stick your arm at the window and begin firing. Very cool.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[8] Car Basics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following sections will familiarize you with the basics of driving in Liberty City.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[8.1] Driving
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Driving. What would a game called GRAND THEFT AUTO be without driving? Any vehicle in the game; ANY vehicle can be carjacked. Like that van? Take it. A parked police car? Take it. Paramedics trying to save someone? Hop in the Ambulance.
Turning is your biggest enemy. When your speeding through the city, perhaps being chased, you can't afford to screw up a turn. So, to turn effectively while going fast, press the brake button, then press the handbrake button, then begin your turn.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[8.2] Fast Cars or Slow Cars?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your probably saying "Fast or slow? What the hell do you think?" Believe it or not, slower cars are preferable to fast cars in certain situations. Maybe you need to take a person somewhere in a certain time limit. Sure, a fast car sounds best, but they also flip more often. Taking slower cars, such as a van or taxi, makes you less likely to flip over, potentially failing the mission.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[8.3] Radio
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are different radio stations you can listen to, depending on what you want. Each car has a different station automatically playing, but you can change it if it's not your cup of tea. Or you can turn the radio off altogether. My favorite station has to be Chatterbox. Some of the callers are just crazy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[8.4] When To Drive and When To Bail
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Needless to say, most of your time will be spent driving, but you should also take into consideration when you should exit from a car. Most of the cars can take a fair amount of damage, but they do have their limits. When you see dark black smoke coming from the engine, your car is near death. When you see your engine on fire, get out, NOW. The car will soon blow up, and if you in it or around it, you'll be blown up with it.
If your car flips over and turns on its side, with no hope of getting back on it's wheels, then get out of the car, now! Cars that are flipped over will eventually catch fire, then blow up, and I don't think you want to be there when that happens.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10] Items
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following are items you can find in the game and what they do.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10.1] Health
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do I really need to explain what this does? Yes? Okay then, health
replenishes your health to the 100 mark. They are usually found near the hospital, and will regenerate over time. There are twelve of them in Portland, twelve in Staunton Island and eight in Shoreside Vale.
They look like a red heart.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10.2] Armor
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you collect armor, a new meter is displayed next to your health. This is your armor. When you take damage, your armor will deplete before your health does. There are five in Portland, five in Staunton Island, and four in Shoreside Vale.
They look like a silver badge.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10.3] Police Bribes ("star" icons)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
These items will reduce your Wanted Level one star at a time. They are found all over the place, but mainly in out-of-the-way areas. They regenerate over time. There are eight in Portland, ten in Staunton Island and six in Shoreside Vale.
They look like a gold star (duh).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10.4] Adrenaline Pills
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
These pills give you added strength, and also slow down time for the duration of the pill. You can punch or kick someone twenty feet!
They look like a red and white pill.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
10.5] Hidden Packages
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a total of 100 Hidden Packages throughout the game, and for each ten you get, you get something that will always regenerate at your hideout. For the location of each package, please see the section elsewhere in this FAQ. There are 33 in Portland, 36 in Staunton Island and 31 in Shoreside Vale.
They look like a white package with tan tape sealing it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[10.6] Rampages
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rampages give you the opportunity to cause some serious destruction in a set amount of time. They can only be picked up when your not doing a mission. If you win, you will receive cash, but if you fail, the Rampage icon moves to a different location.
They look like a white skull.
===============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11] Weapons
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This section will tell you about the various weapons in the game.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.1] AK-47
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Favored among terrorists, it's more powerful than the Uzi and maintains it's accuracy over long distances. The downside? You can't run and you must stand still.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.2] Baseball Bat
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the most common weapon for the beginning areas of the game. Unlike your fists, the bat can knock down people with one swing, then you can bash on them to your hearts content.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.3] Flame Thrower
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Flame Thrower is a weapon of coolness, because not only do you get to see some excellent fire effects, but the resulting explosions make it seem all the much better. You can't run with it, and that's a good thing, or you'd set yourself ablaze.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.4] Grenades
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exact same thing as the Molotov Cocktail, but quicker, and better at blowing up and killing. The longer you hold the button, the farther it'll be thrown.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.5] Handgun
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next to the baseball bat, this is a common weapon, mostly found in the hands of rival gangs. They can take down someone with five to six shots, and you can run while holding it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.6] M-16
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weapon is extremely powerful (just a wee bit weaker than the Rocket
Launcher). It has a scope, and when you fire it, you will feel the recoil. It can take out a vehicle in seconds, but you can't move with it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.7] Molotov Cocktail
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Molotov Cocktail is the same thing as the grenade, except it's much better at torching then blowing up or killing. The longer you hold the button, the farther it'll be thrown.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.8] Rocket Launcher
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The most powerful weapon in the game, the Rocket Launcher is the creme of your crop. It's heavy, so you can't run. It has a sight and will not fire if it's not positioned correctly. Shooting this within close proximity of a wall or vehicle is not recommended.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.9] Shotgun
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weapon isn't found too often, but if you carjack a police car then exit it, you'll have it with five shells. It's best at close range, as the shells spread out the further you fire. You must be standing still to fire this gun.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.10] Sniper Rifle
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A specialized weapon, it's best for missions where you have to assassinate someone, but you can be far away while doing it. One shot kills, no matter where you hit, but if you score a head shot, you get to see a sweet death animation. Great for not attracting attention (except for the cops).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[11.11] Uzi
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a rapid-fire version of the handgun. It's clip holds more ammo then the handgun, so you don't have to worry about reloading too much. You can run while holding the Uzi, and the Uzi is the only weapon that lets you perform drive-bys.
===============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[12] Cars
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are many cars throughout the game, all yours for the taking. In this section, which will constantly be updated, you will find a list of all the cars.
As of October 31, I have started to add in descriptions of the cars. For each car, you will get a description of what it looks like, as well as a brief overview of it's speed and handling. These descriptions will appear over time, because other areas of the FAQ take precendence, so don't be upset if you don't see a description for every car; they're coming!

Introduction
A game that many people have at least heard of, Grand Theft Auto
III is a sequel that eclipses the rest of the series in every
imaginable way. Although it carries a certain degree of infamy
for its mature storyline and over-the-top violence, this
high-profile game has earned well-deserved praise across the
board from gamers for its excellent open-ended mission design and
the freedom it gives you to explore and interact with a simulated
sprawling metropolis.
The game's unnamed protagonist finds himself a rising star in
Liberty City's world of organized crime, after a vicious betrayal
by his girlfriend leads to a chance encounter with a man by the
name of 8-Ball. Soon after getting your feet wet doing a bit of
driving for a local mob boss, you'll soon find that if you want
to get anywhere, you're going to have to get your hands dirty. If
you can keep your cool while keeping your employers happy, you
just might get a shot at revenge.
Liberty City is a big place, and there's an incredible number of
things to see and do. Not only that, there are countless ways you
can go about seeing and doing them. While much of the fun in
Grand Theft Auto III comes from doing your own thing and
experimenting with the world around you, this guide should get
you up to speed on the basics and help you get everything
possible out of this groundbreaking game.
Read on to find:
·
Strategies for effective vehicle and weapon use as well as
general survival tips for the mean streets of Liberty City. A detailed rundown of every story-related mission with suggested approaches and solutions. How to locate and complete rampages, Toyz, and off-road
missions. The locations of useful items, weapons, and more--including all 100 hidden packages. Other assorted tips and tricks. Leading a Successful Life of Crime Grand Theft Auto As the name of the game implies, stealing cars is a major theme in the game. As you play the game you'll become more and more familiar with the different makes of cars that roam the streets of Liberty City. You're sure to develop a few favorites as well. Here are a few general automotive tips.
Procuring a Vehicle.
There are few civilians in Liberty City with enough sense to lock
their car doors. However, they do their best to avoid accidents
and obey traffic laws. This combination works out quite nicely
for you. Since you'll be able to remove a driver from his car
only if the car is going very slowly or has come to a complete
stop, stoplights are obvious places to pick up a new set of
wheels. You'll also find that if put yourself or a car between a
driver and the road ahead, he or she will kindly stop for you,
allowing you to grab a new ride. In the worst-case scenario, an
impatient driver will go around you.
Here are a few things you should note: Vehicles are everywhere. Aside from the constant traffic of Liberty City, there are many parked vehicles just waiting to be stolen. Many of these you won't find on the road, and often they can be very useful. If you attempt to move in the opposite direction of a car while you're in the process of removing the driver, you won't immediately hop back in the car. Police normally keep their car doors locked. However, if you attempt to steal one, the officer will vacate his vehicle toapprehend you. This is just the opportunity you need to run to the other side of the car and hop in. If a boy in blue sees you stealing a car, you'll instantly become a wanted man. You'll also alert nearby lawmen if you steal a parked car with a car alarm, although the duration is very short, and the cops have to be very close to hear it. If you're behind the wheel of a sporty car, try not to drive slowly or stop in gang-infested neighborhoods. You're not the first guy to steal a car, after all. The Art of Driving While sprinting down the streets of Liberty City will build endurance, driving is a much preferable alternative. Each different make of car has its own characteristics: speed, acceleration, handling, stability, and durability. As you put the hours under your belt, you'll find which cars are the best for speed, which have the best handling, and which are simply fun to drive.
Here are a few basic driving tips to keep in mind: Don't think of them as traffic laws; think of them as traffic
guidelines. Even if you're barreling through an intersection on a
red light on the wrong side of the road, as long as you don't ram a cop car or total your car, there's no harm done. You can't get anywhere fast if you're repeatedly slamming into things. If you're taking on a mission with a time limit or you're racing against other vehicles, make sure that you have a car you can handle well. All the speed in the world won't help you if you can't make it to your destination in one piece. Try to note locations such as stairs and ledges, and hardwire
the location of the local Pay 'n' Spray into your brain. These will do a lot to keep you out of jail when used effectively. Particularly insane stunts will be recorded (under game stats)
and rewarded. Shortly after a car's engine begins to flame, the vehicle will explode. If you flip your car onto its back, it will explode
regardless of how much it's been banged up. Bail out immediately!
Take time to explore the city at a leisurely pace. Even the
first island can be intimidating to navigate, and knowing how to
get to and from important locations is essential. Taxi missions
are excellent for teaching you your way around, and they are a good opportunity to pick up some spare cash as well. Tools of the Trade
Before you begin a job, it's always a good idea to examine the
available tools. There are quite a few implements of pain and
destruction to choose from in GTAIII, with some being more
accessible than others. This section will give you a look at the
effective uses, strengths, and weaknesses of your arsenal.
Bludgeoning
Crude but effective, a savage beating with a blunt object is
guaranteed to get results. There are certain instances when a
good thrashing is required or useful, so try to get in a bit of
batting practice when you can. Fists: Anything else they can take away, but you'll always have
your fists and feet. It takes repeated blows to knock someone
down and a few more after they hit the ground. Hand-to-hand
combat should be avoided whenever possible. Baseball Bat: The mighty bat is the symbol of two great American pastimes: baseball and cracking skulls. For your purposes, you're only concerned with the latter. Unlike bare fists, the trusty bat will put people on the ground without
delay. After that, one or two more hits should ensure that they aren't getting up. If you plan on sprinting, make sure to put the bat away.
Firearms
A gun means power. There are a nice variety of firearms in
Liberty City, each with its own uses. If you target people with a
gun, and they haven't yet realized you're out to get them, they'll usually reach for the sky. The effect won't last for long, so be wary of targeting someone who's likely to be packing heat as well.
Handgun: Your very first firearm. While this most basic piece
will allow you to sprint while using it and can take out targets
from a distance, the power is incredibly low. If you're going up
against someone with a bigger gun, or multiple targets, there are
probably smarter ways to approach the situation. This is not a
very effective means of destroying vehicles. You shouldn't have
any trouble finding one of these.
Uzi: This weapon is quite a step up from the basic handgun, and
it's quite versatile. It's light enough to run with, and a good
rate of fire means it packs a decent punch. You can take out a
car with about two clips of ammo, should the need arise. You'd do
well to carry one of these whenever possible. Many gang members
will drop an Uzi when slain.
Shotgun: The shotgun is your first heavy weapon. You won't be
able to sprint while brandishing this one, but it packs quite a
bit of firepower. One shell can drop a man at a decent range, and
the spray is wide enough to take out tight groups. Two shots to a
car will produce an instant explosion, so try not to stand too
close. If you hijack a police car, you'll exit with this weapon
and four shells.
AK-47: A classic assault rifle, the AK is powerful but comes
with a few limitations. You can't sprint while the weapon is
selected, and you won't be able to move at all (you can only aim)
when firing. Even so, the power is substantial, and it can work
well when you're facing groups or attempting to blow up vehicles.
Sniper Rifle: Great for assassinations and long-range combat,
the sniper rifle is a precision tool. Simply put the red dot
where you want the bullet and squeeze the trigger. This weapon
will always be fired from a first-person view using the lock
function. Looking through the scope, you'll be able to zoom in
and out to effectively select distant targets. You can often take
out entire groups of enemies from a distance without them
realizing what's happening. You can set ablaze any car with seven
rounds, so if you need to cause a remote explosion, you should
keep this weapon in mind. It's especially effective with the
adrenaline pill.
M16: This military-issue assault rifle is far superior to the
AK. It has the same movement limitations as other heavy weapons,
but its effectiveness against enemies is almost unmatched by any
other weapon. Using the lock function will put you in
first-person view and will let you aim freely in any direction.
The kick that accompanies the high rate of fire can throw off
your accuracy, so use short controlled bursts. This is one of
only two weapons that can effectively bring down helicopters
(aiming for the rotors produces best results), and there are few
instances where it won't be useful.
Explosive and Incendiary Weapons
Molotov Cocktail: Although it's quite a low-tech weapon, this
flaming bottle can be used to devastating effect. When it hits
the ground, it shatters and creates a pool of flame that will set
anyone and anything that touches it on fire--including you. The
longer you hold down the throw button, the farther the cocktail
will fly.
Flamethrower: When you're feeling pyromaniacal, few things are
as satisfying as this fire-spewing weapon. It's limited to a
fairly short range, but it can do an incredible amount of damage
to your surroundings in no time flat. It's often not the most
practical weapon for the job, but it does have its applications.
Along with the Molotov, liberal use of the flamethrower can bring
a fire truck to the scene on short notice.
Grenade: An explosion in a can. After tossing one it will
explode after several seconds. Grenades will bounce off any
object they come in contact with, so try not to send one flying
right back at you. The blast radius is fairly wide, and a direct
hit will total a vehicle instantly. Lob a few after taking cover
behind a wall.
Rocket Launcher: This is the be-all and end-all of many a video
game arsenal. You'll definitely be feared with this thing slung
over your shoulder. Rockets are aimed from the first-person
perspective and are perfect for blowing up anything at any
distance except close range. Taking aim at a nearby object could
kill you instantly, so be sure to practice proper rocket launcher
safety.
Surviving in Liberty City
I Fought the Law
One of the major forces aligned against you from the very
beginning is the Liberty City Police Department. Whether you're
trying to complete a difficult mission or simply trying to go on
a decent killing spree, the cops are dedicated to taking you into
custody or taking you out. Police presence is something you'll
always have to cope with, so this section will help you to know
your enemy and deal with them accordingly.
Wanted Level
Below your vital information is a meter composed of six stars
that indicate your wanted level. The more stars, the more trouble
you're going to have. It's important to remember that driving
over a police bribe will remove one star in any circumstance.
Taking your car to the Pay 'n' Spray for a new engine and paint
job will remove all stars regardless of how many stars you've
racked up, as long as it's not a police or emergency vehicle.
Here's what you can expect.
Brief Note: Each area has a maximum wanted level. Portland is
four stars, Staunton Island is five stars, Shoreside Vale is the
full six stars.
One Star
Conditions: If you're caught in the act doing something illegal,
the officer who spots you will give chase. Firing gunshots and
causing trouble where no police officers are present will result
in a patrol car being dispatched to your location.
The Opposition: The cop who has initially spotted you or has been
sent after you will attempt to locate you and bring you in alive.
Officers who see you while you're at one star will join the
chase.
Taking the Heat Off: Simply avoid contact with the cops for a
short time, and things should cool off. Try to avoid sticking
around your current location or hanging out in the open.
Two Stars
Conditions: To reach a two-star wanted level, you'll have to do a
bit more. Killing several civilians in a short period of time
should qualify you, and if you directly or indirectly cause the
death of an officer, you've bought yourself a two-star warning
level right there.
The Opposition: Police are now authorized to use force. Several
police cars will try to zero in on you, and officers will fire at
you. Taking the Heat Off: You can choose to lay low and avoid contact
with police until your wanted level wears off. This might take a
while.
Three Stars
Conditions: You've done a bad, bad thing. Killing officers
attempting to bring you in for a crime or the senseless and
repeated murder of civilians can bring you up to three stars.
The Opposition: There will be a lot of police cars homing in on
you at this point, as well as a police helicopter flying
overhead. Officers are likely to shoot first and ask questions
later.
Taking the Heat Off: You're not going to get let off the hook so
easily this time, so you'll need to pick up a police bribe or get
a new paint job.
Four Stars
Conditions: Unless this wanted level has been triggered by a
specific mission objective, you're a cop killer! Much like Ice-T,
you've seriously angered law enforcement officers everywhere.
The Opposition: In addition to everything that's been thrown at
you before, SWAT teams have been instructed to bring you down.
Opposing drivers will be more skilled, and the SWAT members are
more deadly adversaries.
Taking the Heat off: Multiple police bribes or a trip to the Pay
'n' Spray are the only way.
Five Stars
Conditions: It takes a lot of death, destruction, and mayhem to
bring your wanted level up to five.
The Opposition: The odds are seriously stacked against you at
this point. Black FBI cars with expert drivers behind the wheel
will do whatever it takes to bring you down. You're in for a
steady stream of cars until you've hit the Pay 'n' Spray or they
take you down.
Taking the Heat off: The Pay 'n' Spray could be your only hope.
Six Stars
Conditions: Now you've done it.
The Opposition: On top of everything else, the US Army has sent
in soldiers (who pack M16s) along with one or more Rhino tanks.
Good luck...
Taking the Heat Off: If you can make it to the Pay 'n' Spray, you
could live to tell about it.
Getting Wasted, Being Busted
There are plenty of things you can do in Liberty City to get
yourself wasted, but luckily the city hospital has some amazing
doctors who can restore your charred, bullet-ridden body to
perfect health for a fee. If you're running low on cash, the
$1000 maximum charge can wipe out your bank account, but there
are ample opportunities to earn spare change by engaging in the
same high-risk behavior that put you in the ER to begin with.
Getting busted is also a temporary setback you'll have to deal
with. At a one-star wanted level, the police will attempt to
apprehend you rather than eliminate you. You can often simply
outrun a lone pursuing officer on foot or in a car. At higher
levels, you're much more likely to be shot unless you find
yourself surrounded or in a tight situation with your vehicle. If
you find your ride sandwiched by other cars, try vacating your
current ride and hopping into a police cruiser. If Johnny Law
does manage to take you down to the pavement to fit you with a
shiny new pair of handcuffs, you'll be given a slap on the wrist
in the form of a $400 fine.
Either of these situations will cause you to lose any weapons you
might have been carrying, and you'll fail any mission you were on
at the time of your arrest. Saving regularly and reloading your
game can ensure that you never suffer these consequences, but
there are ways--which will be addressed later in this guide--to
ensure you'll be ready to rock immediately following your
release.
Dealing With Gangs
Your relationships with each of the game's colorful criminal
groups will change over time depending on your actions and where
you are in the storyline. There are certain missions that will be
much easier before certain events transpire, which will be noted
in the next section of this guide: Furthering Your Career as a
Felon. Now we'll take a look at a few general tips and
observations on gang behavior that you might find useful.
Attacking members of a certain gang will prompt all other
members of that gang in the general vicinity to attack you.
Cops will never try to stop a crime in progress unless you're
personally involved.
Learn to recognize which cars each particular gang drives, and
be sure to scan the area for affiliated hoodlums before jacking a
vehicle.
Think long and hard before crossing a crime boss, as it can
make driving around in a particular area extremely dangerous.
Furthering Your Career as a Felon
While there's plenty of fun to be had roaming free and committing
wanton acts of destruction and mayhem, there is an actual story
to GTAIII. You'll take on various missions from local crime
bosses, which will open up the way to new missions, new areas,
and more. Missions are listed in the order they're available from
each boss, and the amount you'll earn will be in parentheses next
to the mission's title. To complete all missions, it's
recommended that you complete all jobs for each crime boss you
meet before moving on to the next if possible.
Particularly difficult missions, unusual cases, and new types of
missions will be given more attention than other missions.
Strategies are only suggestions, and there can be any number of
ways to satisfy a particular mission objective. Never hesitate to
experiment.
Opportunities in Portland
Give Me Liberty
This is your first mission, where it all begins. All you'll need
to do is drive to the locations displayed on your radar. If you
can avoid turning your vehicle over and bursting into flames,
you'll be just fine. The first stop is the location that will
become your first hideout. After you and your new friend, 8-Ball,
change out of your itchy prison clothing, you'll head for Sex
Club 7, headquarters of Luigi Goterelli.
Luigi Goterelli
The big "L" on your radar, this man is your introduction to the
Mafia. Luigi's missions serve to familiarize you with the basic
aspects of gameplay. The pay is low, but if you prove yourself
here, you'll soon earn yourself a valuable new contact.
luigi's girl (£1500)
This mission is rather laid back. You'll simply need to procure a
vehicle and make it to the Portland View Hospital to pick up
Luigi's girl, Misty. This will give you a bit more practice
driving and will teach you a bit about how the game's radar
works. After taking Misty back to the club, the mission is over,
and you'll be $1500 dollars richer.
don't SPANKa ma b*tch up (£4000)
Some punk has been introducing Luigi's working girls to a new
drug called SPANK. The boss wants his girls clean, so you're
charged with teaching the dealer a lesson. You'll be taught how
to pick up weapons by being offered a bat, and then you're ready
to take a trip to Portland Harbor.
You'll probably have noticed by now that the radar indicates
targets with a pink dot and uses a blue arrow to point out
important objects on the screen. After your first contract
killing, you'll need to take the chump's car to the Pay 'n' Spray
near your hideout before delivering it to Luigi's lockup in Saint
Marks and collecting your reward.
drive misty for me (£1000)
You'll once again act as chauffeur to Misty. Grab a car and
follow the radar to Misty's apartment in Hepburn Heights. Give
the horn a few taps to let her know you're there. Drop her off at
Joey's garage, and you earn an easy grand and gain Joey Leone as
a potential boss. You may also notice a ringing pay phone across
the street from the garage with Marty Chonks on the other end of
the line.
pump-action pimp (£4000)
Some pimps just don't understand the concept of territory. For
this mission Luigi instructs you to pick up a piece in the lot
behind Ammunation, which appears as a gun icon on your radar. If
you talk to the owner, he'll just tell you the gun is around
back. If you like, you can try a bit of target practice.
Now that you have a gun, follow the red dot on your radar until
you catch up with the pimp in the Diablo Stallion. Kill the two
men as quickly as possible, but be especially careful of the man
with a shotgun. Vehicular homicide is a particularly effective
option. After you're done, you'll get paid and receive a page
that the pistol is now available at Ammunation. Be sure to pick
up any dropped weapons, and report to Luigi for your next
mission.
the fuzz-ball ($£000+)
The annual policemen's ball is taking place at the old school
hall, and you can capitalize on the situation by providing the
boys in blue with some high-priced entertainment. Scattered
across the city are green dots marking the location of Luigi's
hard-working prostitutes. Four grand for a minimum of four women,
and each additional hooker you deliver is worth an additional
$500. A fast car that can hold you and three passengers is ideal,
which ironically makes a police car a great choice for this
mission. A Sentinel or taxi would also fit the bill. After this
mission Luigi has no further work to offer you, so you'll have to
look elsewhere.
Joey Leone
This mob head and automotive enthusiast can be found in the
Trenton area. You'll be able to take Joey's missions only between
05:00 and 21:00 hours. Most of his missions pay handsomely, and
you'll find that a few can be quite challenging. If you stick
with Joey, you'll be introduced to another big man in the Mafia,
Tony Cipriani.
mike lips' last lunch (£10,000)
The Forelli brothers apparently need to be taught a lesson, and
Joey has thought of the perfect example. Mike "Lips" Forelli will
be having lunch at a certain Bistro. You have six minutes to take
his car, bring it to 8-Ball's bomb shop behind Easy Credit Autos
to have it rigged with a bomb, and bring it back without a
scratch on it. While it's possible to repair any damage you cause
at the Pay 'n' Spray, you might find it easier to simply drive
carefully. Once Lips turns the ignition, you'll get the biggest
payoff of your career so far.
farewell "chunky" lee chong (£10,000)
Chunky is pushing SPANK for a new gang, most likely the Colombian
Cartel. Take him out using whatever means necessary. You'll find
your target behind the counter of a Punk Noodle stand, and
unfortunately there are several (terribly exaggerated caricatures
of) Triad members around. He'll run as soon as you get within a
certain distance. It's possible to chase him down before he makes
it to a car, but if not, you'll be able to chase him down in your
own car. A properly placed Molotov cocktail can bring a quick end
to the mission, as can a car bomb.
van heist ($20,000)
This is a somewhat difficult mission that will throw strong
police interference at you. Your job is to ram an armored
Securicar until the guards bail out, at which point you're to
take the vehicle to a warehouse. During this mission you'll
notice a damage gauge onscreen. You'll get a wanted level of one
as soon as you touch the armored car, but you'll have to fill the
damage meter all the way for the guards to vacate their vehicle.
At the same time, you don't want to do excessive damage to the
Securicar or get it caught in an explosion. Once you've managed
to gain control of the slow-moving vehicle, make sure not to
wedge yourself in a corner, or the police may catch up to you. El
Burro will page you after completion of this mission, as will the
place where you stored the Securicar. If you bring Securicars
into the same garage, you'll earn a steadily increasing reward.
cipriani's chauffeur ($3000)
For this mission, Joey will introduce you to his friend and
associate Toni Cipriani. He's trying to extort protection money
from a Chinese laundry, and your reputation as a driver has given
you the honor of driving his limousine. After following the radar
to your destination, Toni will proceed to rub the Triads the
wrong way. Once he's back in the car, drive straight through the
two men shooting at you and make your way to the new location on
your radar before any fish or laundry trucks home in on your
location. Cipriani is so impressed with your driving after the
mission that he'll definitely have work for you in the future.
The Uzi will now be available for purchase at Ammunation.
dead skunk in the trunk ($10,000)
This mission sounds simple, pick up a car containing a recently
deceased rival and take it to the car crusher near 8-Ball's
place. Once you arrive on the scene, a blue arrow will indicate
that the car you need to dispose of is a Manana, one of the worst
cars in the game. If you look closely, you may notice a black car
in the same parking lot and another hidden farther down the road.
Inside these cars are angry Forelli brothers, but you can't do
anything directly to either car before the mission starts. You
have no choice but to hop into the Manana and make a mad dash to
your destination.
The cars attempting to ram you off the road are much faster and
stronger than your car, so you'll have to do some fancy driving
to evade them. If you bump into one of the Forellis, the mission
will start right then. Before the mission starts, you can place
other vehicles in front of them to slow them down. Alternately,
if you think you can take them both out with another vehicle,
that's a viable option as well. Once you make it to the car
crusher, simply avoid your pursuers any way you can until the car
has been trashed.
the getaway ($30,000)
Joey Leone puts a lot of trust in you for this mission. You'll be
the driver for a bank heist. Make sure you choose a good
vehicle--the Sentinel is recommended. Try to keep your cool the
entire mission, as you need to avoid getting chased by any police
until after the job has gone down. Carefully make your way to the
hideout as shown on your radar and park in the blue circle.
After you honk the horn, three serious-looking men will come out
of the building and get in the car. Make your way across town to
the bank, taking note of one particular alleyway containing a
blue and gold police bribe. You may want to park facing the alley
with the bribe. As soon as Joey's boys hit the bank, the area
will be swarming with pigs flying in from every direction.
Hitting the bribe right off will take your wanted level down to
two stars, which will make getting to the Pay 'n' Spray a lot
easier. After that, play it cool until you're back at the
hideout, and you'll receive your cut.
Marty Chonks
The owner of the Bitch 'n' Dog Food factory has a whole heap of
personal troubles and wants you to help him out. His jobs are
simple and generally low-paying. You accept his missions by
approaching the pay phone near Joey's auto shop when it's ringing
(during daylight hours).
the crook (£1000)
Marty wants you to take the rusty Perennial parked inside his
factory to pick up his bank manager in Chinatown and bring him
back to the factory. After Marty's taken care of his financial
problems, you'll need to dispose of the evidence by taking the
vehicle to the car crusher across town. After all of this running
around, Chonks coughs up a paltry $1000 for your trouble.
the thieves (£3000)
Marty hired thieves to break in to his apartment for insurance
fraud, but now they want an additional cut. Much like in the last
mission, you'll need to take a car (a Sentinel this time) to meet
and pick up the thieves. After you bring them to Marty, you'll
need to repaint the car to get rid of any evidence and then put
it back where you found it.
the wife (£2000)
Again Marty? Grab the car that Chonks has prepared for you, then
pick up his wife from the salon and take her back to the factory.
Once she's dog food, you'll need to dump the car into a lake.
Just make sure you're not in the vehicle when it hits the drink.
If necessary, use a second car to send the tainted vehicle into
the water.
her lover (£4000)
At this point you're probably getting pretty sick of Marty and
his jobs. Take the factory car, pick up the "other man," and then
bring him back to Mr. Chonks. Things go a bit differently this
time, however. Regardless, you'll still get paid and you won't
have to run around for this particular loser anymore.
El Burro
Although he's a minor player in the big scheme of things, El
Burro recognizes your talent. You can accept missions from El
Burro by approaching the ringing pay phone in Hepburn Heights.
You'll have to win a highly competitive race in order to clear
the way for further missions with this Diablo boss, but you'll be
rewarded with a few unique and enjoyable missions.
turismo (£10,000)
Before El Burro gives you a real job, you'll have to prove
yourself by racing through the city against several speedy
Cheetahs. If your vehicle comes in contact with one of the other
drivers, the race will start. You won't be able to destroy any of
the cars with weapons either. The one thing you can do is block
their initial path with a large vehicle like a bus and bring the
fastest car you can handle to the race. The race is a tour of the
entire city, with 18 required checkpoints. Raw speed won't help
you if you can't get to the finish line in one piece.
I scream, you scream (£6000)
There's a bit of dark comedy in this mission. El Burro will
instruct you to retrieve a briefcase carrying a bomb. After you
have the bomb, follow your radar to a Mr. Whoopee ice-cream
truck. Be careful not to tip over your vehicle as you proceed to
the next marked location in Portland View. Park your truck,
activate the dandy jingle, and make yourself scarce. When the
Forelli gang is coaxed out by the lure of frozen treats, detonate
the bomb to take out the lot of them. If you suffer from
premature detonation, gun down or run over any survivors.
trial by fire (£10,000)
Your next mission is simple. Grab a flamethrower, follow your
radar to Chinatown, and set Triads on fire. You'll need to torch
20 Triads in two minutes. This type of activity is sure to get
you a wanted level of one because of the amount of panic you're
causing, but the cops won't give you much trouble unless you
roast several pigs as well. When you're done, you've earned an
easy 10 grand, although the Triads will always be hostile toward
you if you've attempted this mission.
big-'n'-veiny (£20,000)
El Burro isn't the type of guy to let someone steal his entire
printing of dirty magazines, scatter them across town, and live.
Instead, he's asking you to hop into a wobbly van and follow the
culprit as he flees. You begin with a 20-second timer, and you'll
gain an additional second for each magazine you run over. Be very
careful not to tip over your top-heavy vehicle until the guy
stops his van and gets out, at which point you're required to
murder him. After dropping the shipment off to the adult
bookstore you'll clear the mission, and El Burro will give you a
special token of appreciation.
Toni Cipriani
This man has his own personal war with the Triads and is keen to
drag you into it. Toni is a big man in the Mafia, although he
does take a lot of flak from his mother. Through him, you'll earn
an introduction to the highest-ranking man in the mob.
Note: It is necessary to complete all of Toni's missions before
you can accept Salvatore's bomb da base mission and eventually
set foot on Staunton Island.
taking out the laundry (£10,000)
Your first job for Mr. Cipriani will earn you the animosity and
hatred of every Triad in Portland and make certain secrets and
extras harder to retrieve or perform. You have been warned.
The actual mission calls for you to destroy three
Triad-affiliated vans, which will be tracked on your radar.
You'll first need to head to 8-Ball's bomb shop to pick up a box
of grenades, whether or not you decide to use them for the
mission. The first two vans will behave normally, provided you
don't ram them. When you've put two out of commission, the third
will disregard traffic laws and make your job a bit more
difficult. Grenades might be the most difficult way to destroy
the vans, but it is possible. Alternately, you may want to use
ramming and drive-by Uzi attacks or simply carjack the vehicles
and dispose of them any way you can.
the pick-up (£10,000)
It seems that your strong-arming did the trick. Your next job is
to retrieve the protection money, which happens to be in the
middle of a four-way alley in the heart of Chinatown. As you
might have expected, the minute you grab the package you're
ambushed by Triads. If you don't bring your car into the alley,
it's possible to win the battle with brute force (just don't
stand in the middle of everything and soak up the crossfire).
However, the alley is wide enough to bring a car right in, and as
is often the case, the car is mightier than the gun.
salvatore called a meeting (£15,000)
Time to take the limo out for a spin. When driving normally,
don't hesitate to brake often unless you want embarrassing
scratches. Salvatore Leone, the Mafia kingpin in Liberty City,
has called a meeting and has made the questionable decision that
all of his top men ride in the same car. When you accept the
mission, it's time to begin the game of follow the radar. You'll
pick up the stretch limo from Joey's garage and proceed to
Luigi's club and then Toni's restaurant.
Once Cipriani is in the car, the Triads will roll in with heavy
vans in an attempt to kill several birds with one stone. You'll
need skill and possibly a bit of luck to make it to the entrance
of the Leone residence, where you'll have to dodge two more
Triads blocking the entrance. Be mindful of the sheer drop to
your right. Once you've pulled into Salvatore's garage you'll
have made quite an impression on the man himself. After
completing this mission, you must complete Salvatore's chaperone
mission before you can progress further in the game.
triads and tribulations (£30,000)
Toni is really getting fed up with the Triads, so he sends two of
his men along with you to assassinate three Triad leaders. To
effectively use your backup, make sure you get a car that can
accommodate passengers. There are three warlords you'll need to
take down, which will appear on your radar.
One warlord is hanging around in the same area that Chunky used
to haunt, which is off-limits to vehicles. After you and the boys
have gotten your point across, head for the next location on your
radar.
Another high-ranking Triad is shooting the breeze outside a fish
factory. You'll realize he has backup when you close to a certain
distance, but it's nothing you and your associates shouldn't be
able to handle. Before you head to the location of the third
target, you may want to steal the Belly Up fish truck.
The best-protected target will be inside the gates of the Turtle
Head Fish Company. There are several ways to take him out,
including lobbing grenades or Molotovs, using a Triad fish truck
to open the gates of the compound, or whatever else you can think
up.
blow fish (£30,000)
This is a very straightforward and rather easy mission with one
catch. You simply have to pick up a vehicle rigged to explode and
deliver it to the fish factory from the last mission. The only
catch is you're driving the lumbering Trashmaster, and you have a
time limit and a damage meter, which can set the bomb off at the
wrong time. After picking up the truck from 8-Ball, make steady
but careful progress until you reach the factory gates. When the
gates are open you should park in the blue circle indicated on
your radar, activate the bomb, and get the hell out of there.
After a satisfying explosion you'll have cleared the last of
Toni's missions.
Salvatore Leone
Sal is without question the man at the top in Portland. The don
seems to take a personal liking to you right off and will offer
you four missions.
chaperone (£10,000)
Your first favor to Salvatore is to take his favorite girl,
Maria, out for a night on the town, although you'll only be doing
the driving. It's the stretch again. You'll first need to drive
the young lady to the waterfront so she can purchase recreational
drugs from her favorite vender, Chico. Chico lets Maria know that
there's a hot party in Atlantic Quays, which will become your
next destination for the night.
The party is taking place in a warehouse by the water. You'll
need to drop Maria off and wait for her, remembering that it
never hurts to be ready to leave in a hurry. Before long you'll
hear the blare of sirens and be caught right in the middle of a
police raid. Security guards will open fire on the cops, and the
cops will in turn begin firing on the crowd. Don't move until
Maria is safely in the car. When she is, leave the scene as
quickly as possible and head back to the Leone residence.
cutting the grass (£15,000)
This mission may seem simple, but there are a few alternate
approaches worth mentioning. Sal suspects that there's someone
leaking information to the Cartel. You'll need to find out if
Curly Joe is the rat. You're informed that Curly normally takes a
taxi home from working at Sex Club 7.
If you attempt to follow his cab to the destination, a
spookometer will be displayed onscreen to tell you if your target
is getting suspicious. It's quite easy to alert this skittish
guy, so you'll need to stay far back until he's reached his
destination. Alternately you can pose as the taxi driver
yourself, in which case you'll simply be instructed to drive
Curly to Portland Harbor. After Sal's suspicions are confirmed,
you'll need to dispose of the traitor.
bomb da base (£150,000)
This job is divided into two acts, and it's one of your most
daring missions yet. You're going to teach the Colombians a
lesson. The first act is rather short. After accepting the
mission, pay a visit to 8-Ball. You'll need $100,000 dollars to
cover expenses. 8-Ball will hand you a sniper rifle, and you're
ready to begin.
Hop in a car and drive yourself and 8-Ball down to Portland
Harbor. When you move into the designated area, your partner will
tell you that he'll charge onto the boat when you fire the first
shot. If you want to make the mission a bit easier, an adrenaline
pill on the ground level to the right can give you an extra edge.
Find a good vantage point (preferably on the warehouse roof) and
get started. As soon as you fire the first shot, 8-Ball will
start moving. You'll need to clear a path for your friend, making
sure that the Cartel members don't get the chance to train their
guns on him. Shooting the reddish barrels will cause explosions
and can help you take out enemies. If you've done your job,
8-Ball will set the bombs, and the mission will be as good as
completed. When the ship sinks you'll recoup your investment plus
another 50 thousand.
last requests (£20,000)
Warning and Spoiler -- After accepting this mission, you can
consider your Mafia ties severed. Portland will become a very
dangerous place for you, so take care of any business you might
have (rampages, hidden packages, missions, and so on) before
accepting Salvatore's final mission.
Salvatore asks you to perform the small favor of disposing of a
tainted vehicle. Seems like this would be beneath you at this
point, doesn't it? As you make your way to the Red Light
District, you'll receive a page from Maria.
The car you're supposed to dispose of is set to explode when you
turn the ignition. Heed Maria's warning and follow your radar
across the Callahan Bridge to the newly accessible Staunton
Island. In addition to locating a new hideout, you'll find that
Maria's Yakuza contact, Asuka Kasen, is visible on your radar.
Your next mission is a test of loyalty, so you might want to
explore your new turf and reflect. When you're ready, head for
the big "A" on your radar.
Staunton Island
Asuka Kasen
A friend of Maria's, Asuka is your introduction to the Yakuza,
and he's your first boss in Staunton Island. The Yakuza Stinger
parked outside Maria's place is a great car for most missions,
and the Yakuza themselves will always treat you well.
sayonara salvatore (£25,000)
This mission requires you to take out your old boss Salvatore to
prove your loyalty to the Yakuza. When you accept the mission,
Asuka will inform you that he'll be leaving Sex Club 7 in three
hours. There are a number of ways to accomplish this mission, and
you may even want to reload your game to try out a few alternate
methods.
At this point in the game you should be able to purchase
grenades, the AK, and the sniper rifle from Ammunation. As long
as you don't get too close, Sal's men will not be alerted to your
presence. The sniper rifle makes for a classic hit. Across from
the club is a building with stairs leading to the roof from the
back, which gives you the ideal angle. However, your sniping can
just as easily be done from down the street since nobody thinks
much of a man bearing arms in this town. When your target leaves
the club, simply aim and fire, and your mission is complete. You
can also try using grenades, Molotovs, or your car or try to
ambush Leone at the entrance to his mansion. This is one of the
more open-ended missions in the game, so see what you can come up
with.
paparazzi purge (£5000)
A photographer for some disreputable magazine would like to snag
a few shots of Asuka and Maria at play. He's floating around the
docks behind Asuka's pad. You'll need to hijack a boat in order
to pursue and terminate your target. If you use the police boat,
you'll be able to fire the onboard cannons to sink his ship. If
you can't destroy him before he reaches the docks, you'll need to
either pick him off quickly or continue the pursuit via car. If
your quarry manages to put a certain distance between him and
you, then he'll escape and you'll fail the mission.
under surveillance (£15,000)
Unlike in the sayonara salvatore mission, a sniper rifle is vital
for the completion of this job. Pick one up at Ammunation if you
either don't have one or simply need more ammo. Several targets
will have appeared on your radar, which you can take out in any
order. Just be mindful of the onscreen time limit.
Large blue arrows will mark your targets once they're within
view. The bulk of your enemies are camped out in a building
directly across from Kenji's Casino. Climb the stairs to the top,
then take out your sniper rifle and take out the spies. Another
group of Mafia grunts is hanging out near a van and will attempt
to flatten you if you're spotted. Take them out from a distance
with a grenade or other heavy weapon. There are more spies
hanging out in the park, so dispatch them any way you can.
After this mission you'll be able to accept missions from Asuka's
brother, Kenji, and you'll hear from Yardie boss King Courtney
about a bit of additional work.
payday for ray (£10,000)
This job is a race against time that may remind players of a Die
Hard movie. You have an envelope containing pay for a crooked
cop, but instead of delivering it straight to him he'd rather you
race all around the city from pay phone to pay phone. A fast car
and no wanted level are imperative to completing the mission.
You'll need to travel to Torrington, Belleville, Liberty Campus,
and back to Belleville again before the timer will be removed and
you'll be able to meet Ray in a public bathroom at your leisure.
The phones can be hard to spot, so you may have to attempt the
mission a few times before achieving success.
two-faced tanner (£20,000)
Asuka asks you to terminate a contact who has been discovered to
be an undercover cop. The retro-dressing classic-car-driving
undercover man may seem familiar to gamers. Regardless, business
is business. Tanner's car is parked right outside the casino, but
unfortunately you won't be able to touch it until after you've
touched the blue circle and the driver hops in the vehicle.
Be warned that your first act of aggression will earn you a
wanted level of four and make your job much, much harder. With
the right weapon you may be able to take out your target right as
he pulls out of the casino, but if not, there are other ways to
kill the guy. Simply ramming the guy until his car explodes will
prove to be quite tough but can be effective if used with the
drive-by technique. You'll also have the chance to send Tanner's
car flying into the lake when he drives by the waterfront, which
is quite effective with a heavy enough vehicle. As long as the
man is dead you'll get your 20 thousand.
King Courtney
This Yardie boss contacts you from a pay phone not too far from
your hideout. Like El Burro, Courtney needs you to prove your
worth in a race before he hands you the dirty jobs.
bling-bling scramble (£1000 x number of checkpoints)
The King invites you to compete in a race across Staunton Island.
This time, instead of being the first one to the finish line, you
simply want to be the driver who hits the most checkpoints.
You'll want a fast but somewhat durable car, as you're bound to
have a few smashups during your run. The Stinger, Infernus, and
Cheetah are all recommended.
Each time a driver hits a checkpoint, it will disappear and the
racers will head to the next one. When you grab a checkpoint
yourself you're also rewarded with $1000. Because you don't need
all the checkpoints to win, and you're competing with several
drivers, winning should be rather easy.
uzi-rider (£10,000)
After accepting this mission, two of King Courtney's men will
arrive to pick you up in a Perennial. You're instructed to drive
to Hepburn Heights in Portland and take out 10 Diablos from
inside the car. Getting out of the car will automatically fail
the mission, and Courtney's men will count it as a betrayal.
There should be plenty of Diablos around whom you can either
crush under your wheels or kill with the drive-by technique. The
Pay 'n' Spray is right up the street if the cops start to give
you trouble. After you've fulfilled your quota, drive back to
Staunton Island and drop your new friends off at Newport.
gang car round up (£10,000)
In order to operate smoothly on hostile turf, the Yardies need to
acquire a few sets of enemy wheels. The Yakuza Stinger will be no
sweat, but the two other vehicles will take a bit of work.
Getting your hands on a Mafia Sentinel and Diablo Stallion
requires a trip back to Portland, which can be a bit dangerous.
The Mafia Sentinel is the biggest challenge, so you might want to
look for this car first. Of all the gangs in Portland that hate
your guts, the Mafia is the most dangerous. Even if you never
stop the car, a few shotgun blasts can take you out before you
know what hit you. Try to catch one of the black sedans without
getting too close to mob territory, and get back to Staunton as
quickly as humanly possible.
Retrieving a Diablo Stallion also requires a dangerous trip to
your old haunting grounds, but as long as you don't run into the
Mafia, you should be just fine. Hepburn Heights near your old
hideout is the ideal place to jack this car.
You can easily find a Yakuza Stinger cruising the city during
daylight hours near the Love Media building or Asuka's condo, or
simply borrow one of the many cruising the streets of Staunton
Island.
After you've gotten behind the wheel of the required car, make
your way back to the small garage marked on the map. Park all
three squarely in the garage, and you've completed the mission.
kingdom come (£10,000)
If you're playing this mission for the first time and you don't
know what to expect, you're in for a surprise. First you're given
one minute and 30 seconds to make it to a parking lot in Bedford,
so do bring a fast car. Once you're there, you're supposed to
retrieve a car for King Courtney containing a valuable stash.
Inside the car is actually a note from your old girlfriend, and
in a matter of seconds, a psychotic bald man hops out of a van
and detonates himself next to your car. There are four vans that
spit the mad bombers out like clown cars.
At the start of the mission you're practically surrounded by
vans, but you have a few seconds before the first real wave of
bombers attacks. If you have access to a powerful weapon such as
the M16 or the rocket launcher, use it to take out one van right
off the bat. After this, make a dash for one of the exits. If
you're being pursued by a bomber, turn around and take him out
from a safe distance. Gradually make your way back in until you
can get a clear shot on a van or you can take out a madman who's
standing close enough to a van to take it out with his explosion.
If you let one of these guys get too close, drop everything and
run, or it'll all be over. You'll need to destroy all four vans
to complete the mission.
Ray Machowski
The big "R" on your radar is a paranoid, crooked cop willing to
throw around some serious cash to protect himself. His base of
operations is a public bathroom in Belleville Park.
silence the sneak (£30,000)
There's a man in the witness protection program ready to testify
against Ray. You can't let that happen. Follow your radar to the
Newport apartment where your target is attempting to lie low. A
cutscene will draw your attention to an open window.
You'll need to toss a Molotov or a grenade into the open window
to flush the witness out, which can be a bit difficult due to the
imprecise nature of your overhand toss. Just keep trying and try
not to hurt yourself. When you do score a direct hit, the garage
will open and you'll be greeted by a hail of gunfire while the
witness will attempt to escape in a car. You can keep your target
boxed in by parking a large vehicle (or vehicles) in front of the
garage before tossing the grenade, and if you like, you can park
your current vehicle in the alleyway as an additional measure.
When he's trapped you can make short work of him, or you could
forgo the above steps and go to the trouble of chasing him down.
Either way, once the sneak is dead your mission is complete.
arms shortage (£10,000)
Completing this mission will be quite useful to your career. The
$10,000 reward is nothing special, but having access to an army
surplus store is. Ray sends you to Rockford to help his one-armed
friend defend against the Cartel. After you get through talking
with your new comrade, there's precious little time to prepare
for the attack.
There are two areas you'll have to watch for. Aside from the main
entrance there's a small alley in the back corner of the compound
that a few men will try to sneak through on foot. Luckily the
compound is littered with powerful weapons, including an M16 and
a rocket launcher. To grab the rocket launcher, you'll need to
climb on the top of your vehicle (the vehicle needs to have a bit
of height) and then jump to the crates. You may also want to
consider using the Barracks OL to block the main gate or use the
vehicle you drove to block the other entrance. Once you've killed
the last Cartel member, the store will be open for business.
evidence dash (£10,000)
Completing this mission will put you in the good graces of the
most powerful man on Staunton Island. A pickup truck is
transporting evidence that could be quite damaging to a man's
reputation. You'll have to ram the truck a total of six times to
shake all the evidence loose, at which point you'll need to torch
your vehicle and the files. You'll earn a wanted level of two for
simply making contact with the truck, so unless you want to take
the time to decrease your wanted level, simply watch out for
those police cars. You'll want to use a car that's fast and at
least somewhat durable for this mission.
gone fishing (£15,000)
For security purposes, Ray requests that you eliminate his
partner. You'll find the dynamite (fishing) cop off the docks
near Portland Rock. Grab a police boat and send him to the bottom
of the lake, but watch out for the mines he'll drop in the water.
You could get out from behind the wheel and try sending a rocket
his way as well if you picked any up from the Army Surplus store.
plaster blaster (£10,000)
The man you tried to kill in the silence the sneak mission is
alive, but not quite well. Still, he's ready to give his
deposition today, and Ray is not very happy at the prospect.
You'll have one more chance to take the guy out and keep
Machowski out of jail.
The witness is being transported via ambulance. In truth, there
are two ambulances, one being a decoy. There's really no way to
tell one from the other by looking, so you'll just have to take
your chances. As soon as you engage an ambulance, you'll have a
dangerous wanted level of three. If you ram (or light up with a
rocket) the ambulance carrying your target, you'll find that a
man in a very durable full body cast will tumble out. It takes a
lot of damage (more than it did to destroy the vehicle) to kill
this guy, so you may consider returning to the Pay 'n' Spray to
turn the heat off. If not, repeatedly run the guy over and hit
him with the strongest weapons you have. Don't try Molotovs or
the flamethrower, as the body cast is flame retardant.
Kenji Kasen
Asuka's brother runs a large casino and heads the Yakuza in
Staunton Island. Kenji has several well-paying jobs for you, so
remember not to bite the hand that feeds you until it runs out of
doggie treats.
kanbu bust-out (£30,000)
This mission calls for a covert assault on the Liberty City
Police Department in Torrington. You'll first need to obtain a
police car, which you'll then take to 8-Ball's Newport shop to be
fitted with a timed bomb. Once you're set, drive the cruiser
calmly through the gate to the back of the police station.
Park the car as indicated, activate the bomb, and take cover.
After the bomb goes off, Kenji's associate will be freed, and
you'll have a wanted level of three. Quickly hop into a police
vehicle and drive to the right to pick up a police bribe. While
making your way to your next radar objective (the Pay 'n' Spray),
take a spare moment to commandeer a nonpolice vehicle. After
getting a shiny new paint job, drop your passenger off at the
last radar point, and you'll receive a cool 30K.
grand theft auto (£25,000)
Kenji is looking to add a Stinger, an Infernus, and a Cheetah to
his personal automobile collection. The cars will be indicated on
your radar, and you'll have to operate within a six-minute time
limit. Most importantly, the cars must be in absolute mint
condition. If you take the slightest bump, you'll need to take
the car to the Pay 'n' Spray conveniently located near the
drop-off garage. This will take time and money, so driving
carefully can save you some hassle. To save yourself frustration,
be sure to park your car carefully and wait for a confirmation
message before leaving the vehicle.
deal steal (£25,000)
The Yardies and the Cartel are establishing a business
relationship that isn't favorable to the Yakuza. You'll need to
sour this relationship. Drive north to Newport and steal one of
the plentiful Yardie Lobos in the area. The cars are reddish with
a lighter roof, and you can play around with the hydraulics as
you drive. Drive your new wheels to the point indicated on the
radar to learn the location of the planned Yardie/Cartel meeting.
Sound the horn to say hi to the Cartel, then proceed to
mercilessly slay the lot of them. After you're done, take out the
gang cars and snag the briefcase. Return the case to Kenji and
you're done.
shima (£10,000)
Maybe all the real Yakuza are busy. Regardless, it's your job to
make a run around town to collect protection money. At first it's
a simple game of follow the radar. You'll simply stop at the
business and collect the money. You hit a snag when you find out
the business in Belleville Park has been robbed and is unable to
pay. The Diablos are the culprit, so you'll need to head to
Portland again to tie up the loose ends.
Your briefcase-tracking radar will take you to Hepburn Heights.
These guys just don't seem to learn. If you have a sniper rifle,
you can easily pick each Diablo off from a distance without them
noticing. Just make sure you're far enough away. If not, you can
take a more hands-on approach. When the final briefcase is in
your hands, return the cash to Kenji 's Casino and you're done.
smack down (£10,000 +£1000 x additional Yardies slain)
Your earlier attempts failed to ruin the relationship of the
Yardies and the Cartel, so an angry Kenji sends you to take out
as many Yardie dealers as possible. Once you begin the attack,
the dealers will make their last calls, so you won't have too
much time to complete your mission. You'll definitely want a fast
car for this mission.
The dealers will appear as so many little pink dots on your
radar. They're literally all over the place, so don't be choosy.
Simply make your way to a SPANK vender as fast as you can,
execute him, and move onto the next one. Vehicular homicide is
fast and effective, but taking out too many innocent civilians
will definitely attract the attention of the cops. Still, this
mission shouldn't give you too much trouble. After you've killed
a minimum of eight Yardies, your business with Kenji is
concluded.
Donald Love
One of the most influential and powerful men in Liberty City,
Love considers himself high above the law. You'll run missions
for him on Staunton and Shoreside, and many of them will be quite
challenging.
liberator (£40,000)
This mission requires that you rescue an old friend of Donald's
from the clutches of the Cartel. He's being held in a compound in
Aspatria. You'll need to jack a Cartel cruiser in order to
infiltrate their hideout, so cruise around until you manage to
find one. The Fort Staunton area is literally crawling with the
large blue trucks, so you may want to head there first.
Once you're in possession of a Cartel vehicle, head toward their
hideout as depicted on the radar. The gate won't open until you
bring the cruiser directly to it, so you have several options.
Again, the sniper rifle is an excellent way to take advantage of
poor gang AI. With the proper vantage point you can take them out
without being noticed. You can also use your car as a shield or a
weapon. Once you've taken out the men in the open, you need to
check the garages for the hostage. On the left end from the
entrance you'll need to open the second garage. There's a guard
inside. Kill him, then bring the old gentleman back to Donald's
headquarters. You may want to hang on to the Cartel Cruiser for
your next mission.
waka-gashira wipeout
In order to stir up something between the Colombians and the
Yakuza, Love wants you to assassinate Kenji Kasen. Before you do
this, you'll obviously want to make sure you've completed all of
Kenji's missions if you care to do so. When you're ready, get
behind the wheel of a Cartel cruiser and head for the multilevel
parking lot in Newport where Kenji is having a meeting.
When you approach the top floor, quickly get a bead on Kenji
(indicated by a large blue arrow) and hit the gas. Do not slow
down for any reason, or Kenji's guards are likely to send your
vehicle up in flames. If you can swerve to take out the two
gunmen in front of him first, slam into Kenji, then aim for the
unique jump ramp at the opposite end of the lot. Don't stop yet,
as you'll have a three-star wanted level. Keep driving until
you're out of Newport and your mission is accomplished.
a drop in the ocean
Completion of this mission will open up the third and final area
of the game, Shoreside Vale. For an unexplained reason, six very
important packages containing unknown contents will be dropped
from a cargo plane into the bay. Donald wants them, and it's your
job to retrieve them for him. You'll easily be able to find a
fast boat on the docks behind Asuka's place.
Once you've grabbed a boat, make your way to the location on your
radar marking the plane's location. Regardless of where you are,
the plane will begin dropping the cargo two minutes after you've
begun your mission. As you pick up the packages, your wanted
level will increase until it reaches five. At this point, skilled
FBI drivers will be after you in fast black cars. You can head
for the Pay 'n' Spray if you like, or you can opt to test your
driving skills and gun it back to Love Media. When you finish the
job you'll learn that the bridge to Shoreside Vale has been
repaired.
Shoreside Vale
While Shoreside Vale doesn't contain as many missions or secrets
as the other two islands, the layout of this area is by far the
most complex. It wouldn't be a bad idea to take a few taxi
missions or simply explore for a while before attempting missions
here. You may want to try Ray's only mission here first, since
something you earn by completing it will come in handy for other
missions.
D-Ice
The leader of the Red Jacks will page you after your arrival in
Shoreside Vale. While his gang is one of the smallest in the
game, he manages to scrape together the cash to hire you for a
few missions.
uzi money (£10,000)
The rivals of the Red Jacks are the nefarious Purple Nines. D-Ice
wants you to cut down the ranks of his enemies by way of drive-by
shooting. You'll need to take out 20 Nines on the crowded streets
of Wichita Gardens, which can be a difficult task. Don't drive
too fast, as this will cause the spread of your bullets to become
too wide. It's OK if you gun down a few Jacks and pedestrians,
but you don't want the cops to show up too quickly here. You may
face opposition in the form of Rump XLs, the preferred vehicle of
the Nines, but stick to your mission and stay in the car.
toyminator (£10,000)
This is exactly like the other Toyz missions, only the stakes are
higher. You're given four highly explosive RC vehicles to destroy
three of the Nines' vehicles. Ram them or hit circle to detonate
your bomb, and don't screw up more than once.
rigged to blow (£10,000)
Someone, probably one of those dastardly Nines, has rigged
D-Ice's brand-new Infernus with a bomb. You'll need to take the
car all the way back to a St. Marks garage in Portland to have it
defused. You have to be very careful while driving, because a few
good hits will cause you to detonate. After the bomb is defused,
carefully bring it back to where you found it as indicated on
your radar. If you put a few dents in it, take it to the Pay 'n'
Spray for a quick fix.
bullion run (£25,000)
A plane carrying valuable platinum has crashed in the Pike's
Creek area. It's valuable stuff, so D-Ice is dispatching you to
the area to collect the scattered pieces and bring them back to
his garage. In this mission you'll notice that as you pick up the
pieces your vehicle will grow heavier. Try using a large vehicle
with good horsepower if possible. You can return to the garage at
any time to drop off your cargo, so don't try to take everything
in one trip. If the police try to stop you, just go about your
business and continue on your merry way. After you've snagged all
30 pieces, you're done for the day.
rumble (£10,000)
Having full health and armor wouldn't be a bad idea for this
mission. After all, you're invited to a rumble. When you accept
the mission, you'll need to drive to D-Ice's brother to get the
lowdown. The place is Wichita Gardens. The rumble allows no cars
and no guns. It's doubtful that they'll allow zips or blades
either.
Once you arrive at the location, it's time to crack a few skulls.
If you can get the Nines to cluster into large groups, you'll
have a much easier time of it. Keep swinging until you're sure
nobody is getting up.
Donald Love
Mr. Love has a few more jobs for you after Shoreside Vale has
been unlocked.
grand theft aero (£50,000)
This mission is a kind of follow-up to a drop in the ocean. The
plane that was dropping the cargo is now in a hangar in Francis
International Airport, and you need to retrieve the item that
Donald was really after. Make your way to Shoreside Vale and into
the airport, but be careful as you approach the dot on your
radar. The plane is being guarded by Cartel members, who will
make short work of you if you attempt to charge in on foot or by car.
The sniper rifle is highly recommended here. Once you've cleared
out the four Cartel gunmen, you'll find that what you're looking
for is no longer in the plane. You'll notice a van with a large
blue arrow over it outside, and though your first instinct might
be to blow it up, you need to closely examine it to realize it
belongs to PanLantic Construction Company. This clue will lead
you to a construction site in Staunton Island.
The actual site is populated by quite a few Cartel gunmen, so
you'll want to do a careful sweep of the area (preferably with
the sniper rifle) before moving in. Once you've taken them all
out you'll take an elevator up to witness a cutscene. You'll
obtain the package and meet up with Asuka, who will take over the
area after this mission. Visit her again later for more missions.
escort service (£40,000)
Compared to Love's last mission, this one is quite simple. The
name might be deceptive though. You'll be escorting the man you
rescued earlier in order to verify the contents of the package
you received in the last mission. The Cartel wants the item back,
so you'll have to discourage them and protect the old man's
truck. Simply ram, drive-by, and ward off attackers until your
friend finally reaches his destination and parks in the AMco
garage.
decoy (£35,000)
This is a continuation of the last mission. As the title
suggests, you'll be acting as a decoy in order to take the
pressure off the man you just escorted. Once you hop into the car
indicated, you'll find yourself a wanted man. A very wanted man
in fact, with a six-star wanted level. You'll have to evade the
police, the FBI, and the Army for three minutes. The easiest way
to do this is to jam yourself in a garage or perhaps the Pay 'n'
Spray (although they won't be able to remove your wanted level).
Alternately you could head for the subway or airport. Once the
time is up, you're instantly safe.
After this mission, returning to the Love Media Building will
give you the title "love's disappearance."Seems like they could
have worked out a more clever title, but oh well. You're through
working for this guy.
Ray Machowski
Ray has one last job for you...to get him out of Liberty City.
marked man (£20,000 and keys to Machowski's lockup)
Machowski is wanted by the FBI, and he wants you to drive to the
airport. You have a mere three minutes to do so, and you can't
use the bridge because the CIA has the entire area covered. You
have two options--you can either take the underground traffic
tunnel or brave the subway. Make sure you know the route to
either before you begin the mission.
Simply get to the blue circle in front of the airport as fast as
you can without killing yourself and poor Ray. After you've
dropped him off, he'll reward you by giving you the keys to his
stash. Follow your radar to the new destination (once again,
avoiding the bridge), and you'll find an M16, an AK-47, a rocket
launcher, and a bulletproof Patriot. The Patriot is especially
valuable, so try not to lose it by carelessly flipping it over.
Asuka Kasen
Now at a new location, and oblivious to the fact that you
murdered Kenji, Asuka has a few more missions for you.
bait (£35,000)
When you accept this mission your radar will display one yellow
dot and three pink. The yellow are your Yakuza comrades, and the
pink are your targets. You'll need to drive to each of the
targets (Cartel cruisers) and lead them back to Asuka's men. You
can do one or two at a time or simply bring the whole gang. Stand
back while the Yakuza make short work of the Cartel, and you'll
soon collect your pay.
espresso 2 go (£40,000)
This is probably the most difficult mission the Yakuza will ever
hand you. Your job is to destroy nine Espresso 2 Go stands in
eight minutes. The timer won't start ticking until you destroy
the first establishment, which is to your advantage. The coffee
shops won't appear on the map unless they're at very close range,
which is to your extreme disadvantage. The better you know
Liberty City, the better your chances.
The first thing you need to do is scout out the locations of the
shops in Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale. Once
you've familiarized yourself with their locations, pick a
starting point you're comfortable with and take out your first
shop. You may find the rocket launcher helpful for taking out the
shops, since your car won't take damage this way. Good luck,
you'll need it.
s.a.m. (£45,000)
You need to bring down a SPANK-filled airplane, and while the
rocket launcher isn't technically a surface-to-air missile, it
should do in a pinch. Follow your radar to a wooden dock where a
boat and a rocket launcher are waiting for you. Then, take the
boat to your new destination. Be on the lookout for Cartel
members near the runway, and wait for your radar to detect the
incoming plane. When it does, and you see the plane approaching,
take aim and fire. You'll need to collect the eight scattered
packages and, with a wanted level of four, make it back to
Asuka's new headquarters.
When this mission has been completed you'll find that there are
no more real missions, only a ransom. Your slimy ex-girlfriend,
Catalina, has murdered Asuka and kidnapped Maria and is demanding
a $500,000 ransom. If you're short on cash, you may want to try a
few vigilante or taxi missions. When you're ready, go to meet Catalina.
Catalina
This is the final mission in the game. It's payback time.
the exchange (£1,000,000)
This is without question a very difficult mission. After parking
in the blue circle, a cutscene will occur in which you're badly
screwed over. When you gain control, you'll need to grab the gun
on the ground as soon as possible. Get behind the wheel of a
vehicle and run down any other immediate threats, picking up any
weapons that are dropped. Exit the way you came, and view the
short cutscene of a helicopter heading for the dam.
You'll now need to quickly make your way toward the dam. There
are masses of Cartel men and vehicles around the entrance. Cause
a vehicle explosion if possible, or eliminate the threats as you
see fit. Be sure to pick up the sniper rifle to the right of the
road before continuing onward. As you come up on another group,
use any weapons or vehicles available to take out the remaining
enemies. Always proceed with caution, and at the very least wait
to check the guard towers with the sniper rifle. Watch out for a
Barracks OL and missiles coming from Catalina if her helicopter
has taken off at this point.
Cautiously climb the stairs and eliminate any remaining threats.
Just be sure you don't accidentally kill Maria. Take the nearby
rocket launcher to your shoulder and place Catalina's chopper in
your sights.
Supplementary Income
Vehicle Missions and Rewards
While collecting hidden packages will do a lot to spruce up your
hideout, still more item pickups can be secured for your personal
use by completing vehicle-specific missions.
Type: Vigilante Missions
Vehicle needed: Police car, Enforcer, Rhino (tank)
Description: There's no justice like vigilante justice. When you
activate a vigilante mission, a criminal will appear on your
radar. You're initially given two minutes to find and eliminate
the threat, and you can pursue your mission outside of a law
enforcement vehicle for up to 59 seconds at a time. Each time you
eliminate a criminal you'll be given a time bonus and a reward
that increases by $500 for each successive head (your reward
begins at $500 and resets when time runs out or you're
wasted/busted). Be warned though: You're still operating outside
the law here, so your wanted level can and will increase
normally. Finally, collectors may want to watch out for rare
vehicles carrying the culprits.
Rewards: After busting 10 criminals, a police bribe will appear
at your hideout in that area. Taking down 20 will earn you
further kudos in the form of a second police bribe. Repeat this
process for all three areas, and you'll have enough bribes to get
away with anything.
Type: Taxi Missions
Vehicle needed: Any type of taxi
Description: Much like in a certain arcade game, the goal of
these missions is to get your passenger from point A to point B
as quickly as possible. Potential passengers will show up on your
radar as pink dots, and after you stop to pick up a passenger,
his or her destination will be displayed as a green dot. Your
timer will start when you pick up your first fare. The amount of
time you're given depends on the distance to the target location,
and the faster you get there the better the payoff. If your taxi
takes too much damage or you pull a particularly unsettling
stunt, your passenger will bail out if your cab is going slow
enough. Once your taxi starts looking noticeably beaten-up,
you'll need to repair it or prospective customers will
understandably wait for a safer-looking ride.
Rewards: Once you've made 100 successful runs total, a Borgnine
supertaxi will appear in the Head Radio Station parking lot in
the Harwood area of Portland.
Type: Paramedic Missions
Vehicle needed: Ambulance
Description: Time to give something back to the community. You're
given one minute initially to drive to the location of an injured
citizen. After he or she hops in the back, you're given an
additional bit of time to make it to the hospital. The timer will
tick down by the second, but you'll lose additional time if you
hit too many bumps or walls, since you're presumably worsening
the patient's condition. Ambulances are a bit top-heavy and are
among the easiest of vehicles to flip, so you'll need to brake
early in turns and avoid collisions. You never want to have the
police after you on an ambulance run, either, although killing
large numbers of civilians can bring an ambulance to the scene
for your personal use.
Rewards: After snatching 35 injured from the jaws of death,
you'll find health-refilling heart icons at each of your
hideouts. Seventy will earn you an adrenaline pill pickup. As you
go about saving successive people, a difficulty level will be
displayed. Reach level 12, and you'll gain the ability to dash
infinitely without having to catch your breath.
Type: Firefighter Missions
Vehicle needed: Fire truck
Description: Take a break from setting the world on fire and put
a few out instead. You're given a time limit to get your big red
fire truck to the scene and put out the fire using your water
cannon. You'll be dealing with vehicle fires only, so take notice
that there are a few very rare vehicles to collect after you've
extinguished the flames. The fire truck is incredibly durable,
but it doesn't maneuver all that well. You may need a few seconds
to correctly aim the stream of water, so get to the fire as soon
as possible.
Rewards: If you'd rather start fires than fight them, douse 20
blazes in each of the three main areas, and you'll always have a
flamethrower on hand at the hideout.
Playing With Toyz
Throughout Liberty City, blue vans with the Toyz logo are just
waiting to deliver some havoc. You'll be put behind the wheel of
tiny radio-controlled cars with a serious explosive payload.
Pressing the fire button or ramming your target will trigger an
explosion that will take out anything nearby. The first time you
complete a mission you're guaranteed $1000 dollars for each
target you blow up. This is in addition to the $75 the game
always awards for destroying any vehicle. Replaying the same
mission will require you to break your old record in order to
collect a reward.
Tip: Humorously, cars will stop to avoid running over the tiny RC
vehicle. You may be able to use this to your advantage and take
out two vehicles at once.
Mission name: Diablo Destruction
Location: Portland, Hepburn Heights area, behind a building near
the stairs to the L-Train stop
Objective: Destroy as many Diablo Stallions as possible within
the time limit.

the Cipriani restaurant
Objective: Blow up as many Mafia Sentinels as possible within the

Rampaging
You're probably thinking, who needs an excuse to go on a killing
spree? Well in GTAIII you certainly don't, but hey, if you're
making money and cleaning up the streets while doing so, then
it's all the better. Completing your first rampage will net you
$5000, and the amount will double with each subsequent rampage
you complete.
Rampages require you to kill as many gang members as you can of a
particular type with a specific weapon within a given time limit.
Failing a mission will cause the icon to move to its other
location. Some are quite easy, while others can be quite
challenging. The time limit for all rampages is two minutes (120
seconds).
Here are a few tips for completing rampages:
Often the location of the rampage can make a difference, so try
to take into consideration whether or not you want to be on a
gang's home turf.
Because of the high risk, it's a good idea to find some armor
before taking part in one of these missions (see the Item
Locations section of this guide).
Use the environment to your advantage. If you can put yourself
on a different elevation, put an obstacle between you and the
rabid swarms of gang members, or put your back to a wall, you may
have a strong advantage.

Off-Road Missions
Certain missions are triggered when you hop into particular
vehicles. Competing only against the hostile terrain, you'll take
the wheel and try to make it through a series of checkpoints
within the time limit. Each checkpoint you hit will get you 20
seconds, which you'll need to get to the next checkpoint. The
time can be banked, and you can clear the checkpoints in any
order. Because of the rough terrain involved, these missions can
be quite challenging.
Here are a few tips for the off-road missions:
Keep the handling and capabilities of the three vehicles in
mind. The Patriot has incredible traction and four-wheel drive,
which allow it to climb steep inclines. The Landstalker is prone
to flipping over on flat pavement, so be especially careful how
you treat it.
Because the checkpoints can be cleared in any order, try to
plan a route beforehand. It can be very difficult to make it from
point A to point B in some cases, so taking care of
out-of-the-way checkpoints first could save you time.
Here are their locations:
Patriot Playground: Portland, Portland View, hop in the Patriot
in the Supa Save parking lot to begin the mission. Reward:
£20,000
Multistory Mayhem: Staunton Island, Newport, drive a normal
Stallion to/into the parking garage to begin the mission. Reward:
£30,000
A Ride in the Park: Staunton Island, Belleville Park,
Landstalker in front of a small house. Reward: £30,000
Gripped!: Shoreside Vale, Cedar Gardens, find the Patriot
parked in the park and get in to begin the mission. Reward:
£40,000
Fencing Stolen Vehicles
After you've completed a certain number of missions, you'll get a
page about the import/export garage. The name of the game is
Grand Theft Auto, after all. By moving stolen vehicles you'll not
only make money, but also earn the privilege of picking up any
vehicle on the list after you've brought every required car back.
In Portland and Shoreside Vale there are garages with posted
lists detailing what models they're interested in. There is also
a crane that loads government vehicles onto a waiting ship. You
can only drop off and get paid for one of each model. Keep in
mind that some vehicles may only appear at certain times of the
day, after certain events, or during vigilante or firefighter
missions. To get every car on this list, you'll need to have
access to all three main areas of the game. You'll get £1000 per
basic vehicle, £1500 per government vehicle, and a £200,000 bonus
when you've delivered all required vehicles to each of the three
locations.

Rare Vehicles
Some of the vehicles on this list can't be obtained by normal
means. Here are ways to get a hold of the rarer breeds without
having to fail a mission.
BF Injection
Joey Leone's love buggy. You'll find this vehicle in Hepburn
Heights outside Misty's apartment, provided you've completed the
sayonara salvatore mission for Asuka Kasen.
Mr. Whoopee
The merry jingle played by this ice-cream truck brings joy to
all. If you spend enough time doing vigilante missions, you're
bound to find a few ice-cream truck drivers that just couldn't
take it anymore.
Securicar
Securicars are often hijacked because of their valuable cargo,
but you'll be able to find them fairly regularly during vigilante
missions.
Trashmaster
Tony Cipriani lovingly refers to these vehicles as "dustcarts."
When you're taking out the trash during vigilante missions, you
just might run into a Trashmaster.
Hidden Extras
Hidden Packages
At the start of your game, your hideout is little more than a
place to restore your vehicles and save your data. Sure, there's
always a baseball bat handy, but if you want to save yourself
some footwork in the long run, you can have the game's entire
catalog of weaponry. For every 10 hidden packages you collect,
you'll be able to pick up one more item at your hideout. Check
the section entitled Item Locations later on in this guide. The
items will unlock in the following order:
10/100 packages- Handgun
20/100 packages- Uzi
30/100 packages- Grenades
40/100 packages- Shotgun
50/100 packages- Armor
60/100 packages- Molotov Cocktails
70/100 packages- AK-47
80/100 packages- Sniper Rifle
90/100 packages- M16
100/100 packages- Rocket Launcher
Each package will net you £1000 on the spot. When you've snagged
the final hidden package, you'll be rewarded with an additional
million-dollar bonus, at which point you're practically set for
life. A special thanks goes to Pulverized2000 for the images
depicting the location of hidden packages.

Item Locations
While you make things easier on yourself by adding pickups to
your hideout, Liberty City does contain a natural bounty of
weapons and power-ups. Certain items are crucial to survival, and
this section will detail where you can get your hands on those
that are most useful. It's also helpful to remember that taking a
bat to a gang member early in the game can get you access to an
Uzi or shotgun before they're available in stores.

Unique Jumps
There are 20 unique jumps in the game. Like with other bonuses in
the game, there's a geometrically increasing pay scale. You'll
add $5000 to your bank account for the first jump, and every
subsequent jump will double your amount. When the last jump is
completed, you'll be given a hearty bonus of one million dollars.
A jump will count only if you clear a predetermined distance or
land in a specified area, so some may take a few attempts to
clear. The fastest cars are always recommended. Here are the
locations:
Portland (eight jumps)
On Callahan Bridge (from Staunton to Portland) there is a
yellow and black divider. Hit the divider at a sufficient
velocity to clear the width of the bridge.
In Chinatown, propel your car over the subway entrance for an
easy unique jump.
Look for a ramp near the river adjacent to your hideout's
location. Hop a concrete walkway to complete the jump.
Launch yourself off a mound of dirt found underneath the
Callahan Bridge. You'll want to be coming from the Chinatown area
and clear two rails.
Inside the Portland Docks, immediately right of where you enter
is a ramp that can launch you over four trailers.
In Atlantic Quays, there is a huge mound of gravel by the
ocean. Coming from Callahan Point, hit the bump at a high speed
to make it across the gap to a dock.
After completing the previous jump, you should land right by
this next location. There is a ramp pointed at two buildings--hit
it.
Also at Callahan Point, near the coach bus station is a ramp in
the direction of a small building.
Staunton Island (four jumps)
In Newport, make your way to the top of the multilevel parking
garage. Try not to bear too far to the right for the jump to
count.
From Asuka's condo in Newport, drive south. At the southernmost
point of the area are two dual-sided inclines and a large pile of
debris acting as the unique jump. You need to jump across the
watery gap for the jump to count, but it's easy to overshoot.
Even if you only touch the ground for a second, you'll still get
credit.
Again, in Newport head south on the overpass. In the middle is
a ramp connecting the two roads. Hop your car up to the narrow
ramp and try to keep going straight until you hit a small tunnel
where you'll be launched for a unique jump.
Find the glass-walled Internet café in Bedford Point. You'll
need to break through the glass, hit the stairs, and fly through
to the other side of the building.
Shoreside Vale (eight jumps)
While driving uphill to the top of the blocked-off tunnel, you
may notice a large embankment. You may also notice that it's
quite a huge drop. If you start at the top of the hill and build
up speed, it should be no problem for you to clear the river and
land safely on the other side.
In Witchita Gardens, coming from Staunton Island, you'll notice
a dirt path to your right leading to an aging wooden bridge. Hit
the bridge and make it to the other side for a unique jump.
At Francis International Airport, take the parking entrance in
the airport, but continue past the actual parking area and crash
through the warning gate. If you follow the road and then turn
right, there's a boarding ramp that will set you up for a unique
jump.
Also at Francis International Airport, look further south for
yellow and black warning ramps pointed in the direction of a
hangar and grounded helicopters. Hit them at full speed and you
should get credit, provided you end up on your wheels.
There are two similar jumps in the Francis International
Airport area. Just past where you took the first jump is a hangar
with warning ramps on the other side. Hit them from the other
direction and fly over the hangar to complete the jump. You'll
need a very fast car, because you'll need to clear the entire
hangar to be credited.
One more hangar is waiting to be jumped in the same fashion.
Find it and jump it.
In the Cochrane Dam area, north of the hospital and police
station is a wide-open building lot at the top of the hill. There
are two unique jumps here. For the first, head east and bear to
the left of the wooden ramp. If you manage to land in the small
fenced-off area with another ramp, the jump will be completed.
You'll need to be in the same Cochrane Dam area. Look for a
small alley to the south of the ramp used for the previous jump.
You need to touch down on the roof of the second garage. It can
be hard to build up enough speed to make it that far, but keep
trying.
Miscellaneous
GTAIII is a game full of amusing things to do, with subtle
touches thrown in by the developers. The following is an
incomplete list of things you may want to try.
Learn to fly a Dodo. At Francis International Airport in
Shoreside Vale, there exists a small red plane known as the Dodo.
You'll find it by the helipad, and it's notoriously difficult to
fly. Handle with care.
Find obscure vehicles. Some vehicles that only appear during
missions have special properties or are simply one of a kind. If
you see a vehicle you just have to have, odds are there's a way
of getting it.
Spend some time with the ladies. If you're facing a
particularly difficult mission and are contemplating what might
be your imminent death, you may find comfort by hiring one of
Liberty City's many working girls. You'll know them when you see
them. If your health is 100 or below, pick up a hooker (simply
pull up next to one in a nice car) and head for a remote location
like a forest or abandoned warehouse. You can get up to 125
health this way, which could mean the difference between life and
death on a tough mission.
Go crazy. GTAIII is an incredibly open-ended game. Explore it,
test your limits, and try new approaches to old problems. There's
a lot of entertainment to be squeezed from this title, so get
squeezing!
Well that’s about it………
