Halo: Combat Evolved Multiplayer Maps walkthrough

This is a follow up to my weapons guide I wrote. We'll assume you're battle ready for any situation, and you're comfortable for the 'dynamic duo' in your holsters. But, another important factor is maps. If you don't know what the situation is in the maps, you're not going to know where to get the weapons, where to get over shields, where to hide, the vantage points, the bottle necks ... no matter how good you are with a pistol, someone who catches you off guard with a shotgun gives you no chance. Know your way around the Halo, and you will really kick some Master Chief cyber butt.

Death Island:

Based on the Silent Cartographer level, this is ... an island, with 2 bases on each end. This map is designed for vehicles, with its vast coast and open skies. The main advantage available is using the high ground to your advantage. Either with a Banshee, or powerful weapons (Sniper Rifle or Rocket Launcher recommended).

:: Shotguns, Pistols and Rifles are located in the base, along with a Health pack
:: Sniper Rifles and Banshees + 1 Ghost are located on the other end of the Banshee teleport
:: A Shade turret is nearby the Shade teleport
:: Shotgun / Flame Thrower / Fuel Rod Gun located near tunnel near blue base
:: Central area nearer Red Base containing Overshield, Fuel Rod Gun, Shotgun, Frag Grenades,
Rocket Launcher
:: Most vehicles are located on the shore in front of the bases
:: Vehicles are a big thing in this map. Carry a heavy weapon to take down anyone who wants to
challenge you. Rocket Launchers are near cliff edges, similar to Flame Throwers
:: The map slopes to a central battleground, with cliffs around, which are easily accessible. If
you can control the high ground; you will have an advantage over the enemy
:: With the amount of hills and ramps, and difficult terrain to cross, a Banshee is recommended for
speedy transport around the map. Especially in Capture The Flag, King Of The Hill and
Oddball, where you can get the rush on the enemy

Timberland:

A forest terrain, with 2 bases, roads and plenty of hills. Again, high ground will give you an advantage, but not that much, as it is much easily countered, with vehicles and heavy weapons. The best advantage is to not be seen, and stay in the shade. The map is symmetrical, so both sides are similarly laid out, except a waterfall with Invisibility.

:: In the main bases, you can find a Pistol, Plasma Pistol, Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle, Sniper Rifle,
Flame Thrower, Shotgun, Grenades and Health. There is 2 entrances on the ground floor, and
1 on the 1st floor to the left.
:: To the left of each base (facing out to the center of the map) is a hill, with a Sniper Rifle and
Health. There are rocks for cover and there is a Fuel Rod and Plasma Grenades further left into
The corner of the map.
:: To the right, leads a road that is near a Needler and Plasma Grenades
:: In the middle of the map, between both bases by the cliff edge is a Health, Shotgun and
Invisibility. Further into the center is another hill, with a Rocket Launcher and Assault Rifle and 2
Frag Grenades
:: In the center is an Overshield
:: On top of the waterfall is Invisibility. This is an advantage that Blue base has. This is a great
Sniping spot, but wiser players will look for enemies here.
:: When driving, take the roads, as they are effectively the best routes.
:: Either go via roads in vehicles, or hide over the hills on foot, with invisibility. Use the shade on
the left of Reds base to advantage, as it’s hard to see anyone over there.
:: Be careful when sniping. Don’t stay still, or zoomed, as you make an easy target for those
behind you for a melee. Likewise, look out for those concentrating on sniping.

Gephryphobia

A giant Covenant bridge, with encouragement for Banshees, walkways on the sides for sniping the main bridge. 2 levels in the bridge, power ups and turrets on the top level, and a straight speedy route down the lower level. Again, both bases are symmetrical.

:: In the main base, is an Overshield, Shotgun, Pistol, Assault Rifle and Plasma Rifle. Tunnels to
the sides lead to the lower level of the bridge and a Flame Thrower.
:: Through teleports to the rear of the base, are elevated platforms, which contain a Sniper Rifle
and a Banshee. This is a good place for sniping, but there is limit cover to keep you hidden.
:: In the middle of those elevations on the sides, are 4 Plasma grenades and a Fuel Rod Gun.
:: The main bridge (upper) has walls useful for cover, and has a rocket launcher on the ledge
by the ledge facing the lower bridge. This is useful for taking down Banshees.
:: On the sides of the upper bridge is 2 Shade turrets, and Sniper rifles, and on the right side of
Red’s base is Invisibility, and on the right side of blue’s base is an Overshield. Just before
that central part is a Shotgun on one side, and a Needler on the other, behind walls.
:: On the lower bridge in the center is a Health pack, a Shotgun, 2 Pistols and a Sniper Rifle.
:: If you travel on the main bridge, does it in a Ghost so you can get away from some Banshees
hunting you
:: For a quick move from base to base, use the Banshees and go from 1 Teleport to the other,
getting the flag, going back to that Banshee via Teleport again, and back home.
:: In a game like Oddball, or just if you want to keep hidden but have a very good vantage point,
the top of the pillar in the middle of the bridge holds a Health and is hard to attack. This is good
for sniping off. The open hole below contains an Overshield.
:: Likewise, the pillars on top of the base entrances is a good spot also.
:: Being obvious is a problem here, as Banshees will easily get in your way. Either carry a Rocket
Launcher, or just go in a vehicle everywhere. The sides are also good routes, near Plasma
Grenades and a Fuel Rod Gun.

Infinity

This is a big figure of 8 map, with a central area with bridges going to teleports, which lead to a rear entrance of the bases.

:: In the small building opposite your big base, where the Flag usually is, there is a Fuel Rod Gun,
a Shotgun and an Assault Rifle.
:: On the bigger base, there is on the 1st floor, a Plasma Rifle, a Pistol, and 2 of each Grenade,
plus a health and Overshield. On the 2nd floor is a Banshee, and a Sniper Rifle.
:: To the left of each base (facing out), there is a ledge for sniping, high up. Red has a simple
ledge, whilst Blue has a ledge over an arch, with a rocket launcher. These require a Banshee
to access.
:: In the middle is 4 walkways, with Rocket Launchers in the middle of the top bridges, and
Health packs on the bottom ones. On the floor, in the middle of the ‘X’ junction, there is a Fuel
Rod Gun.
:: To the right of Red base (facing out away from the middle again) is an Invisibility power up.
However, to the left of the Blue base, near the ledge, is another ledge with an Overshield on it.
:: All sides of the 8 (4 paths to central area) have a Turret, Health and Sniper Rifle ledge.
:: Banshees are again, the best route around, however, if you dare, take the teleports to the main
walkways and pick up a Rocket Launcher, on the upper bridge. You are in the open with no
cover, so be careful.

Danger Canyon

A ‘U’ shaped base, with central area, and linking area inside the U, connecting both bases and the central area.

:: Your starting base has a Plasma Pistol, Plasma Rifle, Assault Rifle and a Pistol. Further up,
towards the center (on the terrain) are a Shotgun, Grenades and Health.
:: Towards the middle through the tunnels, is a way to a central room. Here, is 2 Sniper Rifles,
a Fuel Rod Gun, Plasma Grenades, a Plasma Rifle and Health. If you turn away from the
central doorway, and go towards the doorway where you got a Sniper Rifle, you will come to a
‘T’ junction. Forward leads to a Rocket Launcher. Left, or Right leads to an alternate way to the
central area outside (same as the central doorway).
:: In the central area, outside, is 2 bridges. On the bright or unnatural side, is 2 Shotguns, a
Plasma Rifle, an Assault Rifle and 2 of each grenade. Over the Bridges is a Sniper Rifle, a
Teleport to a lower central section, and an Overshield.
:: The lower central selection contains an Invisibility / Overshield nearby, and a variety of Covenant
weapons.
:: Up close and distance weapons are useful, so I recommend a Pistol and a Shotgun.
:: Unless you are driving, a heavy weapon must be used while traveling the terrain
:: To surprise enemies, drive through the tunnels in the center, and pop out on the top ledge. Use
a Ghost, and drive around the center, while the enemies are near hopeless. You can even
sneak to the enemies’ base and back without going down into the cavern.

Ice Fields

The central bridge is the main control point. Watch out for enemies below, the sides and the sniping points, and you will have firm control of traffic to and from bases.

:: A good collection of weapons is available at the beginning, with there being a Flame Thrower,
Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Plasma Rifle, and Pistol, as well as Grenades.
:: Teleports to the sides lead to power ups, watch out for enemies on the opposite sides.
:: The central bridge contains powerful weapons, and an Overshield. It is easily accessed by
vehicles, so claiming it first gives you heavy weaponry to take down challengers.
:: Sniping points accessed from the lower ground and sides to the main bridge can be useful
for picking off those who control the central bridge.
:: Don’t drive in the central lower point in a hog if you can, as the ice will make you a target for
those above with heavy weapons.
:: Controlling the bridge is key, as it gives you the best route in vehicles to and from a base, and
as we know, vehicles is the faster way to go! In team games, arrange it so people control the
bridge.
:: If the enemy has the sniping spots covered, dive in and out quickly, and run with the Sniper
Rifle, and hide. Take an alternative spot in the shade to pick off enemies too close to the edge.

Bloodgulch

My personal favorite, Bloodgulch is mainly no mans land. There are a number of tactics and routes, and with all the space and the position of the bases, Bloodgulch can be your best friend or your worst nightmare.

:: Zoom weapons are useful. Unless you can get close, don’t bother with the Shotgun, and get a
Pistol as soon as possible.
:: Vehicles are useful here, as if you can block the enemy team’s teleport, you can cripple their
movements
:: The left of Blue’s base contains a walkway with Plasma Grenades, Overshield, Pistol and
Flamethrower. Good for offense, for both teams
:: Left of Red’s base is less useful, and isn’t shaded, however to the rear corner, is an elevated
area with a good view over the map
:: Go through the teleport and you are entering no mans land. Make sure you can use a pistol.
:: Rocket Launchers are useful, along with Rod Guns, as they take down vehicles, and can be
devastating in the base, where they are either trapped, or have no cover.
:: Overshield and Invisibility in the center (nearer Blue’s base) can be useful, if you act fast. Since
you get it near the middle; it can mean you are half way down on your Invisibility or Overshield.
Taking it with a vehicle might make it obvious, but you get to use it more.

Sidewinder

Similar to Danger Canyon, except more open. A base similar to that in Timberland, and elevations in the middle and sides, good for covering central transport.

:: Again, zoom weapons are useful. Sniper Rifle and Shotgun on top of bases is a useful pick
up, so race to it.
:: Using the teleports and trying to control them is a way of stopping an access route. Unlike the
X-Box version, the teleport does return to their base, so try to keep control of this route
:: Watch out for Ice with the Hogs
:: The central area contains a Flame Thrower, Plasma Grenades and an area to pick up
Overshield and Invisibility
:: In CTF, throw the flag through the grate where you pick up power ups to speed up the capture.
You need good team work though!
:: Ghosts are deadly. You can kill hundreds, and paralyze an entire team, by driving through the
enemy bases, and out, killing them as they spawn. It is rare they spawn upstairs. Watch out for
grenades, and enemy verbal abuse!

Boarding Action

2 ships without a physical link, teleports on the bottom and top levels are your only routes.

:: Learn this map, know where to go and how, and you will do well. Know the ladders, and
practice on your own to get to grips with this weird maze of floors
:: On the top corners are very good weapons. On one side is a Sniper Rifle, and the other is
a Rod gun, use teleports to switch.
:: Be careful for snipers. Don’t hesitate and keep moving, taking cover.
:: Keep a Pistol at hand, as it is very useful for the distance. Sniper Rifles are more difficult to use,
but if you are comfortable, use those instead.
:: Rocket Launchers are useful also, not as useful as Fuel Rods, but they make a good
alternative, due to their ability to take out enemies up close as well as far away.

Derelict

An arena map, complete with central points. The upper floor, accessed by teleports is useful, as it contains good weapons and power ups

:: The second floor has an Overshield in the center as well as an Invisibility power up to the side
:: There is also a Sniper Rifle and Flame Thrower, which you can use to punish enemies
:: Down below, the Shotgun is a useful weapon, given the small size of the map
:: Grenades = kills kills kills!!!
:: Nab the health in emergencies, and take the plasmas surrounding the entrances to that health
:: Overall, the best bet to win here, is to take advantage of the small arena, and use up-close
weapons

Wizard

Another arena map, with power ups in each corner, and a similar design

:: The center holds a Flame Thrower, this is very useful since there is no Shotgun
:: Grab power ups to the sides, they are very useful, because this map can get mental
:: The 4 weapons around the platforms surrounding aren’t that good, your best bet is the Needler
because of the suitability of the close encounter situations
:: Grenades in the gaps between the power ups and those platforms are useful to get
::The teleports can prove a nifty escape, giving you time to regroup from heavy fire. However, if
there is a big battle going on, it may prove useless.
:: The gaps beside the teleports are a risk. Considering that there are Grenades, Needlers,
Assault Rifles and Pistols in this map (both types), you will be badly cornered.

Longest

A giant corridor, with a higher levels which will prove useful

:: Go up top via the ladder and get the shotgun
:: Pistols are useful, as aiming is easier, since they can’t strafe from side to side. Stand at the end
of a corridor, and fire at the head. If there are a lot of people battling, you will rack up a lot of
kills
:: Flame Thrower in the middle of the map is an important weapon, try and get it A.S.A.P
:: Jump from the platforms up top and get the Overshield / Invisibility power ups
:: Again, grenades are important, they are near the ends of the tunnels, and in dips along the
main corridor, next to pistols

Battle Creek

A mini Bloodgulch in a way, with a creek in the middle, sniper towers, plenty of power ups and lots of obstacles

:: Look for invisibility in the edges of the creeks
:: Overshields are located at the far ends of the bases
:: Grenades can be quite useful here, especially as the spaces are quite enclosed
:: Sniper points at the top are hard to be effective unless you are very skilled, lob grenades from
these spots. But watch out, as grenades can be your enemy in this enclosed space
:: From these spots, you can reach the rocket launcher. If you can get hold of this, you can stalk
from above, but be careful, as you’re even more obvious. Despite the Rocket Launcher being a
good weapon, don’t consider this as an easy way out. Good aim is required, as there is rough
terrain and obstacles

Damnation

This is a maze-like Covenant level, which has a lot of advantages.

:: The Fuel Rod on the top level is a brilliant must-have weapon. The Shotguns below it will make
a good secondary weapon
:: Nearby, to the right (facing the water fall) is a flame thrower, and a teleport to the sniper rifle
:: Down below is a Rocket Launcher. Be careful when attempting to get this, as there are people
above with a fuel rod gun.
:: The Overshield near the water fall is good to get, but be quick, as you will be a target

Rat Race

Rat Race is a Human version of something like Damnation; it’s a sort of mess, and is another map worth learning.

:: There’s a natural cavern which contains a Shotgun and Overshield, this is worth getting
:: The Flamethrower is a useful weapon to take
:: Get custom to the map, because the design is quite maze-like, it is random and lacks symmetry
:: To the right of the entrance of the cavern is an Invisibility, incase you prefer using that instead,
but I doubt it would be useful

Prisoner

An arena like map with multiple levels

:: Get the Rocket Launcher and Invisibility in the center, also, get the flame thrower near by
:: If you can, take the high ground so you’re less victim to being targeted. From here, you can use
Grenades to lob at the ground level
:: Close range weapons are again the best option, but at the opposite corners are Sniper Rifles,
which will prove useful if you can use them

Chill Out

A similar map to Damnation, this is a sort of maze, and is worth remembering the locations of key weapons

:: The Flame Thrower is useful, as well as the Shotgun. The Shotgun is in a room on top of a
block, 1 of 2 blocks. The other is the exit of a teleport.
:: Grenades are not the best choice in this map, but do good
:: Near the main room, find the Rocket Launcher on ledges sticking out of the room, if you can
jump and get it, you will have a chance, since there is no Fuel Rod Gun

Chiron Tl-34

Not a popular map, it’s a maze of teleports, and really, is very rarely played online

:: Learn the map! The teleports will confuse new players, so get on top of them by knowing
where everything is
:: There is a health pack in every room
:: Up close weapons are very useful, so Shotguns will do favors here, however, heavy weapons
are a risk because of the confinement
:: Despite it being a level full of teleports, motion trackers do have use here, as the teleports are
relatively similar to the destinations that the motion trackers show people at

Hang ‘em High

A big box full of paths, bridges, obstacles, dips and ramps, there is a lot going on in this map

:: Fuel Rod is a useful weapon to find, it will win matches. It is located
:: The Rocket Launcher on the path, the lower one is useful. If combined with Invisibility, it
becomes very useful
:: Pistols are key here, you start with them, so get used to them
:: Shotgun and Pistol is a good combination. The Shotgun can be found under bunkers at
opposite sides of the map. It is also located in an underground tunnel, near Blues base.
:: Sniper Rifles are available, but you need to get to a good spot, like a corner of a map in a base
:: Flame Throwers aren’t so useful, you’ll be better off with a Shotgun instead, since it has more
range
:: Overshield has good use, since Plasma Pistol is not available in this map, so get hold of this to
give you more life against pistol fire

I wrote a weapons guide for advice on what were the best weapons, for certain situations. I’ve attempted to do a similar thing with the maps, so you can get an idea of how to get a real advantage, wherever you are.

HALO

The race to save the human race is in your hands. This guide will explain to you the prime basics of Halo and help you tackle the covenant.

WEAPONS

M9 HE-DP Grenade

Your basic fragmentation grenade, this grenade is very powerful and can be thrown from a short to very long distance, and can overcome all vehicles except tanks. Use the environment to throw this grenade as it ricochets off walls, but watch you don’t throw it too close to yourself.

M6D Pistol

A small pistol, with quite a powerful shot and also comes with a zoom of up to 2x. It can be fired semi-automatically or automatically, and should be used more as a stealth weapon than anything else. A very useful weapon to have in your possession.

MA5B Assault Rifle

A rapid-fire assault rifle, this weapon is actually quite weak and you’ll find that the amount of bullets you use rapidly decreases. The best way to use it is in quick bullet spurts, as the aim is large, rather than going through a whole set of ammo in one go. Not very powerful, but best used against large groups of weaker enemies.

M90 Shotgun

A beefy and very powerful shotgun than can take out enemies with one hit. Reloading can be sluggish, and it doesn’t come with a lot of ammo, but used against large amounts of enemies at close range, it is devastating. Don’t use it from a distance as it is very un-accurate.

S2 AM Sniper Rifle

Your basic Sniper rifle, it can zoom in to 2x and then 10x, making it superb for taking out enemies from long range. Is a very powerful weapon, but the bullet leaves a trail when fired, so don’t stay in the same place all the time. Never use it in close combat due to slow reloading and lack of ammo.

M19 SSM Rocket Launcher

Your basic explosive weapon, the Rocket Launcher is a very powerful weapon when used properly. The rocket when fires moves slowly, so aim ahead of the targeted enemy if they are moving, and also watch when using it from close range as the explosion can also kill you. It can also zoom in 2x and can be used as a stealthy weapon also. A very handy weapon to have hold of.

Plasma Rifle

A rapid-fire weapon, this gun uses plasma, not bullets and runs on battery. Can be fired very fast and is surprisingly powerful. Very effective against Elites when trying to break their shields, but don’t use the rapid-fire for too long or the gun will overheat and will be unusable for a few seconds, allowing the enemy to attack you.

Plasma Pistol

Again uses battery power and plasma beams, the pistol can be charged up to fire a bolt of plasma which is very powerful. If not charged, it fires relatively weak single plasma beams, so best used against unsuspecting enemies as the plasma blot also homes in on enemies. When you fire a bolt, this gun also overheats for a few seconds so beware of this.

Needler

A very mysterious weapon, the Needler is a rapid-fire gun that shoots out purple needles that home in on a target. When a certain amount of needles hit the target, they form an energy ball, and explode on the enemy causing a lot of damage. It does run out of ammo quickly, but is best used against hoards of enemies due to its power and rapid-fire.

Plasma Grenade

The second type of grenade in Halo is one of very high power and the Plasma grenade can stick to enemies and vehicles, making it a very deadly weapon. It has a three second fuse, and watch it doesn’t explode to near you. It is hard to hit small targets with it, but is perfect to stick against a large vehicle like a tank that is attacking you.

Stationary Gun

This gun turret fires plasma bolts and has infinite ammo. However, due to the fact you are stationary, it is a very easy target to hit as you can’t move, so if you are going to use it make sure you have a group of allies around you.

VEHICLES

M808B Scorpion MBT

This battle tank is a very powerful vehicle to be behind the wheel off. It has an automatic machine gun, and a missile launcher that needs to reload after use. Although very slow, the tank can hold a driver, and up to four other players riding on the pods. The tank is very vulnerable to attack due to its size and slow speed, but is a very powerful vehicle. Best used against other vehicles and enemies far away that can’t attack closely.

M12 Warthog LRV

The Warthog is a good vehicle for getting from place to place. It travels very quickly, but due to hard cornering it is prone to rolling over and under steering. It can hold three players; one driver, one passenger who can shoot, and one player who can control the three-barrelled machine-gun at the back which isn’t too powerful. I wouldn’t recommend it in combat, but is very good for moving around the worlds and running over single enemies.

Ghost

The Ghost is a Covenant vehicle and hovers in the air. It is very light and quick, and comes with two weapons that can shoot plasma bolts rapidly at the enemy. It is very manoeuvrable, but the driver has no protection and is prone to attack, plus the rapid fire weapons aren’t too powerful. Best used against smaller groups of enemies.

Banshee

The Banshee is another Covenant vehicle and can fly in the air. It is very quick and manoeuvrable, and due to the fact you’re in the sky, very hard to hit. It has a rapid-fire plasma weapon, similar to the one mounted on the Ghost, and also can fire an explosive plasma ball, which like the Tank needs to reload after use. The Banshee is a very useful vehicle and although weak to heavy weapons, is the best vehicle arguably in Halo.

ENEMIES

Grunt

Grunts are very weak enemies that usually travel in small groups. They have no shields of any kind, so are easy to kill with any weapon. They usually carry Plasma weapons, but sometimes use Fuel Rod guns, but I would recommend using a melee attack or an Assault rifle to take them out.

Jackal

Jackals are usually found alone or in very small groups. They carry with them a protective shield that repels all types of ammunition except explosive weapons, like grenades. The shield can be very hard to destroy and they usually carry plasma pistols. Once their shield is destroyed, they usually flee, so use either grenades or charge up a Plasma pistol to see them off.

Elite

There are two varieties of Elite; one type being visible, blue in colour and carry plasma rifles. The other types are invisible until attacked, green and carry an energy sword that will kill you instantly if hit. In my opinion, they are the hardest enemies to defeat in the game. They have a protective coating around them that takes a lot of time to destroy, and when that coating is active bullets don’t stun them. Once the coating is destroyed, they are stunned by ammunition and are easier to kill. They are also very intelligent and lead many groups of the Covenant. Watch for the Elites as they are very common enemies.

Hunter

A rare enemy in Halo, the Hunters are usually found in twos and are equipped with Fuel Rod guns. From a distance, they are dangerous, but close up they can only charge at you. To kill them, watch for them to charge and move when they do, and you’ll see an orange patch on their backs. This is the only part of their body that can be hurt. A pistol is very effective against this weak spot, and the Hunters aren’t that hard to take down.

Aerial Turrets

These machines hover in the air, and fire a laser beam at you which wears down health very quickly. They are usually found in sets of five or six, and together are very difficult to defeat. Charging up a plasma pistol can usually see one of in one hit, but watch for these mechanical enemies.

Flood Enemy 1

The Flood are the enemy of the Covenant, so when you see them both fighting in the later levels don’t get involved. They will destroy each other, and when one side finally bites the dust the other will be weakened allowing you to move in.

The First flood enemy looks like a squid, and is very small and travels around with hundreds more around the stage. Although they have no weapons, they can jump into you, killing themselves and causing a tiny amount of damage. But when many jump at you, use one shot of any gun to kill one, which will then kill many more around it. Very irritating and ammo-wasting enemies.

Flood Enemy 2

This enemy has legs and arms, but his head is deformed. These aliens travel around in large numbers and use shotguns, making them very lethal enemies. Using a shotgun is most effective but watch when you shoot them, as they get back up after about 10 seconds. These are very tricky customers to deal with.

Flood Enemy 3

This enemy is basically the same as the previous enemy, except this one has a head and also uses pistols as well as shotguns. Use the same tactics as above to see them off.

Flood Enemy 4

This grotesque enemy looks like a huge balloon with small legs. They have no weapons, and when they get close they’ll fall over and explode, releasing a small army of the squid enemies I described earlier. Use a shotgun to take them down, but make sure they don’t explode near you as the blast will wear down your health a lot.

TACTICAL PLAY

Weapon Selection

Whilst playing Halo selecting weapons is a very important factor of the game. With Halo you can only carry two weapons at a time, so choosing the right weapons is a priceless skill. Whilst playing on the large maps, stick to using your Pistol and Sniper rifle as these are stealthy weapons and have a zoom. On medium sized levels, use a Pistol and a Rocket launcher as they are powerful weapons and again can zoom in. For smaller areas where you can bump into anyone unexpectedly, stick with a shotgun due to its power from close range. The more you play the maps, the better knowledge you’ll have of what weapons to use.

Destroying a Player’s shield

A very difficult skill the master, but if an enemies shield is down he can be easily picked off. The best way to destroy a shield is to use a frag grenade when they are least expecting it. Wait for it to explode and then move in to wear down his life. I have also found the pistol is very good of destroying the shield quickly, and then a head shot should see the enemy off.

Keep your eyes open

Whilst playing Halo, always keep your eyes open for enemies and constantly scan the environment for movement. The environments you play on aren’t interactive and are very simple, so you should be able to spot any enemy close by. Also try to pick up powerups when you can as they can prove a lifesaver during one-on-one combat.

Running

When being pursued by an enemy or from shots, never turn your back. Face the danger, and jump up and down, and move left and right to make yourself very difficult to hit. Keep firing at the enemy until you find a corner or are out of their sight.

Reloading

Whenever you’re not in combat, always reload your weapon. Never reload it during combat as you are an easy target and can’t fight back. Also, when you reload, try to do it in a shadowy place out of the way, as an enemy sniper can’t take you out.

Vehicles

Using vehicles during battle has good and bad points. When you play, most players will run for the first vehicle they see. Only enter a warthog if you are going to travel a long distance, and they are also good for using as cover. A tank should be used to protect the base, but I wouldn’t recommend using a ghost due to their size and lack of power.

Shadows

Always stick to dark, shadowy areas whilst playing as it makes you very difficult to see and shoot, and you will hardly ever be noticed.

Knowing the maps

Before you play a map, walk through it on your own. Find where all the powerups and weapons are, find where all the teleports take you and look for good sniping spots. This will give you the edge over your opponent no matter how good they are.
