Sonic Advance Boss Walkthrough by Nathan Edgeworth (Edgy)

If you have played Sonic's Megadrive games all the way through,
you shouldn't have much of a problem with Sonic Advance on the
Game Boy Advance. However, it has been over 6 years since the
MegaDrive finally stopped having new games released for it, and
so there are going to be many of you, especially the Nintendo
fans out there, who are new to Sonic games, and so will find
this a challenge. This guide is for you, giving you some tips to
beat the bosses, who most of the time happen to be different
variations of Dr. Eggman's craft.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contents
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Neo Green Hill Zone
2. Secret Base Zone
3. Casino Paradise Zone
4. Ice Mountain Zone
5. Angel Island Zone
6. Cosmic Angel Zone
7. X-Zone

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Neo Green Hill Zone – Act 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In your first encounter with Dr. Eggman, he travels along the
ground from side to side with a large hammer, hitting the ground
whilst swinging over the top of Eggman from one side to the
other. Stay between Eggman and the hammer as the hammer lands
and attack as many times as you think you can whilst jumping
over to the other side of Eggman.

After five or six hits, he starts moving faster. After another,
he starts alternating between himself moving over the hammer and
the hammer moving over himself. Just attack him as quickly as
you can, trying to avoid getting hit, and Eggman will evacuate
with his damaged craft.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Secret Base Zone – Act 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This time, Eggman hops around on a giant spring. He will keep
attempting to crush you by jumping, landing where you stand as
he jumps. The trick is to move just after he's jumped, and as
he's landing, jump and attack him, though making sure not to
accidentally hit the spring.

After around four hits, Dr. Eggman will jump higher than before
and on landing he will cause you damage, unless you manage to
time a jump perfectly so that you are in the air as he lands. Be
careful though as he is a better aim in the air!

His normal pattern of attack returns, but quicker in pace, and
after a couple more attacks, Eggman will spring high into the
air again. Once he has landed, quickly attack him a few more
times and once again, he will retreat.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Casino Paradise Zone – Act 2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an unusual boss stage. Situated around a small platform
in the centre of the screen are six pipes. Both Eggman and a
red-herring spiked ball will appear out of these pipes and fly
across the screen into the one opposite. Just stay on the centre
platform, evade the spiked ball when it is needed, and hit
Eggman as much as possible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Ice Mountain Zone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eggman has the advantage this time! With you stuck underwater
with limited oxygen and Eggman out of reach at the top of the
screen, it takes some practice beating him.

Wait for Eggman to knock down some icicles from the top of the
screen. Don't hit their undersides but jump on top of them. If
you're quick enough, you'll be able to jump high enough to hit
Eggman. Use the same technique to get some air though, otherwise
you'll fare no better than a drowned rat.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Angel Island Zone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of fighting Dr. Eggman, you fight an echidna, similar to
Knuckles. First of all he flies at you. Just run out of the way
of his flying attack and then retaliate with an attack of your
own. After three hits, he changes his tactics and launches a
spin attack at you across the ground. Just jump over him then
attack the echidna. The echidna will now change from a dark red
to a dark gray colour.

First he will fire a rocket at you, then he will initiate his
flying attack at you, like at the beginning. Dodge his attacks
the same way and keep attacking him after every flying attack he
attempts and you shouldn't face any major problems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Cosmic Angel Zone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eggman is back after his long recovery and is meaner than ever.
He travels along the bouncy ground in his capsule with his
weakspot on the underside and some spikes on the upperside. To
flip him around so that you can attack him, simply jump on the
ground near him and he will be upright. Quickly attack him
before he flips himself back and dodge any projectile attacks he
launches at you. Just keep repeating this, watching out for his
increase in speed when he travels along the ground after being
attacked a few times, and you should be fine.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. X-Zone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the final zone and consists only of multiple boss
battles.

First, run along the platform (don't stop!) and collect the
rings. You will then stop with two small platforms about halfway
up the screen, one on the left and the other on the right.
Megadrive fans may recognise this as the first boss fight with
the then called Dr. Robotnik, from the Green Hill Zone of Sonic
the Hedgehog. If you don't want to take any risks, the best way
to approach this battle is to jump onto the right platform right
away and attack Eggman before he extends his wrecking-ball. Then
run into the bottom right corner of the screen. Eggman will
continue to swing the wrecking-ball left and right so timing is
crucial. As he has finished swinging to the right, jump onto the
platform above you. The ball should now be heading to the left.
Quickly jump and attack Eggman, then run back to the bottom
right corner. Repeat this another two times and you'll beat him.
Easy, eh?

Now run all the way to the right, collecting all the rings on
the way. Before the platform you're standing on disintegrates,
jump onto the platform above you to the left, then quickly jump
again to the right. Just keep running to the right and you'll
see Eggman again as he was in another boss fight in a Megadrive
game, with a drill on the front of his vehicle. For the first
three attacks, the trick is to play chicken with Eggman, but you
have to be the chicken. Wait until Eggman is fairly close to
hitting you then jump and attack him as he goes past. On the
fourth hit, Eggman will fire the drill-piece in front of himself
to launch at you. Jump over it and attack Eggman in one go. He
will then disappear again to find his next craft.

To your right there will be a spring. Jump on it and you will
collect more rings as you fly up to a platform above. Go through
the restart point so that you can skip the other two battles if
you lose a life, and continue running to the right. Collect all
the rings you encounter and prepare for the final fight.

Eggman shields himself for most of the time, so make sure you
get your timings right. If Eggman launches a claw out the front
of himself, run and jump away so he can't grab you and shake out
all the rings you collected. Watch out for him hovering to the
other side of the screen too – make sure you jump over him. He
will also fire a wide beam of light across the screen, which
you'll have to jump to avoid. Sometimes, Eggman fires a
projectile that looks suspiciously like a Campbell's Meatball,
so you'll want to avoid that also – Jump over it. The trick is
to memorise the time it takes for him to lower his guard to
attack you, jump just before he launches an attack, then hit him
yourself. That way you avoid his attacks and hit Eggman both in
one. If you practice, this should become fairly easy in no time
at all as you'll know exactly when Eggman is due to attack.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the end scene and credits, and take
note of the funny names to bring up in idle conversation.
