WARCRAFT 3 HUMAN WALKTHROUGH

In Warcraft 3 the humans are the first race that you will play as in the campaign (apart from the orcs in the prologue missions) and are the most balanced of the four races. The humans are useful for beginners because they can both attack and defend well and have some very powerful units such as the knights.

UNITS

Peasants:
These are used for gathering resources and building, although they’re very weak in battle they can be transformed into militia when needed for battle.

Footmen:
Footmen are the standard fighting unit for the humans early on, while quite weak on their own they are effective in groups and are cheap to produce. They can be upgraded with ‘defend’ which reduces the damage from piercing attacks but slows them down.

Riflemen:
The standard human ranged unit, riflemen are useful for taking out enemy air units and land units equally. They’re not as tough as footmen though so try to keep them away from attackers and let them drop them from a distance. Upgrade them with ‘Long rifles’ to increase the range of riflemen by 50%.

Knight:
Knights are fast and very powerful; lots of hit points and armor mean that knights usually last longer on the battlefield than other units. They’re expensive but well worth it and should replace your footman later in the game. You can upgrade them with ‘animal war training’ to increase their hit points.

Priest:
The priests are weak in battle, but can cast both offensive and defensive spells making them essential in battle. Unless they’re protected and kept away from the fighting they won’t last long.

Sorceress:
The sorceress can attack both air and land units with its basic attack. It also wields powerful spells such as slow, invisibility, and polymorph which turns enemies into sheep.

Gyrocopter:
These are very effective against air units although they’re expensive and can’t attack ground units unless upgraded with ‘Gyrocopter bombs’. They can also learn ‘true sight’ to allow them to detect invisible units.

Mortar team:
These units are slow but very powerful and effective against groups of enemies and buildings. They can also destroy trees and can be upgraded with flare which allows them to reveal part of the map. However mortar teams suffer from a lack of armor and hit points and have a minimum range meaning they can’t target enemies next to them.

Steam Tank:
This unit is heavily armored but is slow and vulnerable and can only target buildings. While they are powerful I prefer to use mortar teams against enemy buildings as they can also target enemy land units.

Gryphon Rider:
These are air units which can target both land and air units and can be upgraded with ‘animal war training’ to increase their hit points and ‘storm hammers’ which allows them to attack multiple units at once.

HEROES

Archmage:
The archmage is the human spellcasting unit. He can damage both air and land units and has the following spells:-
Blizzard – This makes waves of ice fall from the sky that both damages both enemy and friendly units. It’s useful against groups of enemy units but not very good against buildings.
Summon Water Elemental – This summons a powerful water elemental which fights for the mage. It can attack both land and air units.
Brilliance aurora – This increases the mana regeneration rate of the archmage and other spellcasting units nearby. It is essential to have because it allows you to cast more spells.
Mass Teleport – this requires the mage to be level 6, it teleports the archmage and nearby friendly units to a target friendly unit. This can be used to turn the tide of battles.

Mountain King:
The mountain king is a melee fighter and can learn the following abilities:-
Storm bolt – This hurls a hammer at an enemy unit dealing massive damage and stunning the target.
Thunder clap – this is a great move to have. The mountain king slams the ground, dealing damage to multiple enemy units.
Bash – This gives the mountain king a chance to inflict bonus damage and stun the target. This is good to have in melee battles.
Avatar – (Requires level 6 to learn). This turns the mountain king into a giant, giving him a greater attack, more armor, and 500 extra hit points, and also spell immunity.

Paladin:
The paladin is a defensive fighter who can attack land units. He can also learn the following abilities:-
Holy light – this heals friendly units and inflicts damage on undead units. This is essential to have.
Divine shield – This provides a shield making the paladin temporarily invulnerable, very useful to have when a battle isn’t going your way.
Devotion Aurora – This gives bonus armor to friendly units.
Resurrection - (requires level 6). This raises six dead friendly units, however a drawback is that you can’t chose which units are resurrected but over all this is another good power which can turn the tide of a battle.

CHAPTER 1: DEFENSE OF STRAHNBRAD

Objectives:

Defend Strahnbrad
-Travel to Strahnbrad
-Arthas must survive

Kill Slave Master
-Kill the Slave Master

Optional Quests:

Save Timmy
-Rescue Timmy from the Gnolls

Bandit Lord
-Slay Menad the bandit leader

Move Arthas and your troops to the south west of the map, here there are two villages that will take up arms and help you when you approach, they will now help you in your fight. Move east and you will come across a woman who has had her son kidnapped by Gnolls.

Secondary Quest 1:
Move east into the Gnoll camp and slay them, if any of your men are injured use Arthas’s holy light to heal them. When they are dead a cinematic will show the boy returning to his mother. For doing this she’ll reward you with a ring of protection +1.

Backtrack to the road you were just on before and continue heading south east. Just after leaving the village there is a small clearing in the trees where you will get ambushed by bandits disguised as villagers, simply kill them and you’ll get a scroll of healing for your trouble. Continue heading east until you get to a bridge, here you’ll find two villages being attacked by bandits – help to fend them off to activate the second sub quest:

Secondary Quest 2:
Follow the path the bandits used to escape; when you get to the river you’ll face 3 bandits. Continue on the path and you’ll come across 3 more bandits and Menad – the bandit leader. Watch out as Menad as level 5 so concentrate your forces on him and use holy light to heal your troops. Once they’re all dead take the ledger back to the farmer and you’ll get a tome of strength.

Back to the main mission now; cross the bridge and kill the two Orc grunts at the city gate. Proceed to the centre of the town and kill the Raider and the Grunt there. Explore the town, to the west you’ll come across a group of footmen who are being attacked by 2 Grunts, aid them and they’ll help you. Move to the north of the town and you’ll be attacked by 2 more Grunts who smash there way out of a house; kill them and then smash the crates around them to find a mana potion.
Now move to the north west of the town where a cinematic will show the slave master ordering the villagers to be taken away. Heal any wounded troops you have then attack the slave master. Again concentrate all your attack on the slave master and use holy light to heal your troops. Once the Slave Master and the Orcs are dead the mission ends.

CHAPTER 2: BLACKROCK AND ROLL

Objectives:

Establish a base:
Construct a barracks
Build 2 farms
Train 6 footmen

Blade Master
Defeat the Blade Master
Arthas must survive

Optional Quest:

Searinox:
Slay Searinox
Bring the heart of Searinox back to Feranor

First of all get the three spare peasants to mine gold and train two more so you have five mining. Train three more peasants and assign one of them to gather wood and the other two to build the farms and barracks. If you get attacked simply use Arthas and any troops you have to repel the attack, you will be helped by Uther, and use any spare peasants to repair any damaged buildings.
When the barracks is ready train as many footmen as you can and build extra farms if you need to (having a large army makes this mission a lot easier). Try to keep your population under 40 to start with so you don’t lose any resources to upkeep.
Next to your gold mine there are some crates, smash these to receive a scroll of protection. Once your base is build there will be a cinematic showing some prisoners being sacrificed. Your next objective is to slay the blade master, but first concentrate building up your forces and base defenses as it is very annoying when you take your army out of your base only to have to rush it back to repel an attack. Also upgrade all your scout towers to guard towers which fire arrows to aid you in your defense.
When you have 11 footmen with Arthas group them by pressing shift and 1, now whenever you press 1 these units will be selected. Have about another 12 footmen guarding your base (group these as well for easy access later) and get them to patrol between the two entrances (this should be enough to stop any attacks).
Move your main squad (the one with Arthas) east out of your base and you’ll find some dwarves which will trigger the sub quest.

Secondary Quest:
The dwarves want you to bring them back the head of a dragon that has been terrorizing the locals. They have given you 4 riflemen but you can now train them at your barracks so train 7 more and assign them to a third group. Upgrade your units at the blacksmith and once the riflemen are ready group them with Arthas and move them to the south east of the map where the dragon is. As you move through the dragon’s lair you’ll come across several smaller dragons, however your riflemen will make VERY short work of them. When you get to Searinox assign all your riflemen to attack him while Arthas heals them and defends them from the creatures the dragon spawns. Once he’s dead take his heart back to the dwarves and they’ll give you an orb of fire in return.

Now back to the main task, reassign Arthas with his former group and train an extra rifleman to make the group of riflemen full, now explore every corner of the map because there are several small enemy camps and a small orc base to the north (destroy this to stop your base being attacked).
The Blade Master is in the north east corner of the map, he’s only level 2 and will not offer much resistance.

CHAPTER 3: RAVAGES OF THE PLAGUE

Objectives:

Investigation Villages
Explore the country side
Arthas must survive
Jaina must survive

Grain:
Destroy grain warehouse

Optional Quest:

Fountain of health:
Find the fountain of health

Move your forces east along the road until you find a clearing in the trees. In the clearing there is an ogre mauler (level 5) and an ogre warrior (level 3), slay them to get a potion of healing and then head west along the road you were just on. When you get to the farm, approach the woman and she’ll tell you that something’s wrong at the bridge. Walk to the bridge and the man will explain that it’s been destroyed.
Head north east past some farms and you’ll witness some villages being attacked by bandits. The bandits are only level 1 so kill them all. For doing this you’ll be rewarded with a potion of greater healing. Following the path, and approach the man with the exclamation mark above his head.

Secondary Quest:
Follow the path north across the river and kill the Murlocks on the other side. Keep following the path and when the path forks off take the north path which will take you to a bandit camp. Kill the bandits and destroy the tent to get a scroll of protection.
Head south west along the path and use your footmen’s defend move to help in the battle with the skeletons (you can also use Arthas’ holy light to damage them). Once the skeletons are dead you’ll get 3 footmen to aid you.
Move west into the burning village, defeat the undead there and collect the potion of mana. Move west to the fountain of healing to complete the side quests and heal your troops in the fountain before moving on.

Go back into the village and follow the path going south. After the cut scene, destroy the crates and move south and take out the undead there. Go further south and you’ll get 2 priests. Follow the path killing undead as you go. Fight the undead in the village and you’ll get a mortar team. Take out the undead in the shallows to the west of the village and get the mantle of intelligence +3.
Move north and after the cinematic rekill the undead (since they’ve already died once), concentrate on the abomination first is it deals the most damage. Once they’re dead, destroy the grain warehouse to complete the mission.

CHAPTER 4: THE CULT OF THE DAMNED

Objectives:

Investigate Anderhal:
Explore Anderhal

Confront Kel’Thuzad:
Find Kel’Thuzad

To start with you need to build up a decent base. Build some houses and 5 villages to mine gold. Build a lumber mill and get several peasants to gather wood (about 6). Train some more footmen to help defend your base. You have 2 entrances to your base so once you have a decent force, split it into 2 groups and get one to guard each entrance. Put Arthas at one entrance and Jaina at the other. Now concentrate on building up a base. Build a couple of scout towers at each entrance and upgrade them to guard towers to aid defense.
Once you have adequate defenses take one of your armies (remember to add some rifle men to your ranks) and then move east to capture the second gold mine. You should upgrade to a keep if you’ve not already done so. Remember to explore everywhere on the map to find hidden enemy camps and items to be found.
When the path to the goldmine is clear send some of your peasants to construct a town hall next to it and to mine gold. There’s an undead base to the north of your base so train some mortar teams and group them with one of your armies and go and destroy it, it shouldn’t be too challenging.
Once the base has been destroyed proceed into the town. After the cinematic go and face Kel’Thuzad. Use both armies for this, destroy the undead base here and kill Kel’Thuzad, use holy light and summon the water elemental to make this easier.

CHAPTER 5: MARCH OF THE SCOURGE

Objectives

Defend Hearthglen
Survive for thirty minutes

Optional Quests:

The grain caravan
Destroy the grain caravan before it gets to the last village

This is an easy mission as long as you have some good defenses and a decent number of troops. Start off by training some more peasants so you’ve got about five mining gold and about six collecting wood. Immediately start training footmen and riflemen, and build a blacksmith and an Arcane Sanctum and train a few priests. Remember to keep upgrading your troops and there’s a gold mine in the village in the north of the map if you run out of gold. Also, build some more towers and upgrade them to defend your base. I also recommend using the grouping function to split your forces into smaller groups so they can be easily moved around to engage the enemy.
After a few minutes you will be presented with an optional quest to destroy the grain caravan before it reaches the last village. To do this simply build up some forces and attack the caravan on the road at the top of the map (It’s usually just infected the third village by the time I destroy it). There is an undead base in the centre of the map but don’t even try to destroy it, it’s practically suicide and the undead seem to attack you in limitless numbers.
Near the end of the level you will be attacked more and more often so it’s crucial to have some priests to heal your troops and peasants to repair towers. When you have about 30 seconds to go the undead launce a massive attack against you from two sides, just hold them off for as long as possible as this attack is virtually impossible to hold off (it is possible but the timer always runs out), you should survive for the remaining time before Uther returns and the mission ends.

CHAPTER 6: THE CULLING

Objectives

The Culling
Destroy plagued villagers houses
Kill 100 zombies
Stop Mal’ganis from claiming 100 zombies

Quite a difficult mission, start by building footmen and riflemen, group some with Arthas and keep some back to defend your base. After a few minutes Mal’ganis starts to claim zombies so try to get an early lead. Just keep destroying the buildings and killing villagers. You’ll probably come across Mal’ganis so take him out, it takes him about two and a half minutes to regenerate so use this time to get a lead on him, make sure you have plenty of reinforcements and you’ll do fine. The undead will keep attacking your base so make sure you have enough troops back at your base to defend.

CHAPTER 7: THE SHORES OF NORTHREND

Objectives

Establish a base camp:
Locate a gold mine
Arthas must survive

Mal’Ganis:
Destroy Mal’Ganis’ base

Optional Quests:

Rescue Muradin’s men:
Rescue the dwarves base

Move your troops south and kill the wolves there. Go east and face some more wolves and head northeast along the road to face yet more wolves, this time though you’ll face a dire wolf and a frost wolf. Once the wolves are dead they drop a scroll of the beast. Head south again and rejoin the road you were on before and move east once again.
Follow the road until you see an ice troll which runs away at the sight of your forces and follow it to its camp, slay the trolls to get a potion of greater healing. Watch out for the troll priest though as he heals the other trolls causing your attacks to do little or no damage so kill him first.
Go northeast along the road to face some giant spiders, they’re quite tough to kill but they drop an orb of frost which gives Arthas frost damage to his attacks so it’s well worth it.
Once again move east to find a gold mine. After the cut scene you get a new hero – Muradin Bronzebeard. At level 5 he’s not as powerful as Arthas but he has the devastating thunder clap move which is useful against groups of enemies.
Start by training some peasants to build farms, gather wood, and mine gold. Now start building up some base defenses, make sure you have a lot of rifle men and some guard towers to defend against the undead gargoyles (gyrocopters are also very effective but more expensive). You will be attacked often so use Arthas’ resurrection power to bring back fallen units.
Once you have a good base, lots of defenses, and sufficient forces, move some of them north to attack the undead base there, it’s not very well guarded and you should have no trouble in destroying it. Once its there go to the dwarves camp to complete the optional quest.
Once you’ve rescued the dwarves it now time to think about attacking the main undead base. Upgrade your troops, I highly recommend using the grouping function here so you can keep a close watch on all your troops. Group Arthas with your weaker units: - such as priests, footmen and riflemen so you can use his holy light power to heal them. Defend your siege weapons and direct their fire on spirit towers before moving on to more important buildings like the graveyards and necropolis. Use resurrection to revive dead units and the battle should be quite an easy win.

CHAPTER 8: DISSENSION

Objectives

Burn the boats:
Destroy the five ships
Do not let the timer reach 0:00

In this mission you start with only your two hero’s and two mortar teams, and since you have a time limit of 25 minutes, time is very important (25 minutes is more than enough time though).
Follow the road and take out any undead you come across. When you come to the undead spirit towers use your hero’s to take care of the undead while your mortar teams take out the towers. Use this tactic for any undead you come across. When you get to the mercenary camp hire as many as you can afford (buy plenty of ranged units) and continue along the path.
Move south taking out any undead you come across using the same tactics as before and destroy the first ship. Cross the bridge and follow the road. Kill the giant spiders and then destroy the second ship, just three more to go now. Hire more mercenaries at the next camp. Cross the river and kill the Murlocks on the other side before continuing.
The path to the third ship is blocked by some trees so use your mortar teams to clear a path (use the attack ground command), once the path is clear destroy the third ship. Just north of this ship there’s a goblin laboratory where you can buy goblin sappers which are effective against buildings (you’ll need to backtrack through the trees to get to it). To the north is another mercenary camp so stock up on ranged units because just round the corner are a group of dragons. To kill them simply use your ranged units and use Holy light to heal your damaged units.
Carry on the path and a cinematic will show lots of spirit towers guarding the road ahead. You could take them out with your mortar teams but this takes a lot of time so just heal your troops and send them running straight through. You will take losses but since you’re so close to the end it doesn’t really matter.
Once again follow the path south killing undead as you go, destroy the small base to the south and fight your way north again through the undead to the last ship, when you get to it simply destroy the ship to complete the mission.

CHAPTER 9: FROSTMOURNE

Objectives

Frostmourne:
Locate Frostmourne
Arthas must survive
Muradin must survive

Mal’Ganis:
Destroy Mal’Ganis’ base

This mission is quite tricky to start with (it is the last mission after all) because you have to locate frostmourne at the same time as defending your base from regular undead attacks.
First, let’s concentrate on building up base defenses and troops and worry about finding frostmourne later. As always train some peasants to collect resources, train some more troops and upgrade them like you’ve done in the earlier missions until you have some formidable defenses.
Now switch to Arthas now that your base is well defended. Move north along the path killing the wolves as you go (one of them drops a ring of protection +3). When you see a wolf that runs when it spots you chase it and you’ll be ambushed by several giant frost wolves, slay them all to get a periapt of vitality. Follow the path a little further and you’ll come across a fountain of mana, carry on and you’ll face a few more wolves and two wendigos. Kill them and get a tome of agility.
Now simply follow the path and kill anything that gets in your way until you get to the guardian (level 10). Concentrate all your attacks on the guardian and ignore the revenants and other enemies as they disappear once the guardian has been defeated.
After the cut scene that shows Arthas getting Frostmourne, he will appear in your base for the final objective.
For the last part of the mission, build up some forces as usual and upgrade your mortar teams to flare, this gives them the flare ability which is very useful for scouting the map. Use this to find undead bases and things like mercenary camps, and creatures. Simply attack the undead bases one by one as they are lightly guarded (start with the one directly to the east of your base it is the biggest threat to your base (and you can use its goldmine).
When there’s only the main base left advance all your forces into to it slowly. Make sure you don’t advance into it too fast as you will be overwhelmed by enemy forces. Use siege weaponry to take out the spirit towers and other undead buildings while the rest of your forces takes care of any undead that attack you. Make sure that you have a lot of ranged units to take out the Frost Wyrm as it is very dangerous and should be dealt with immediately. Advance forward only when all enemies in the area you are in are dead and the buildings destroyed so they can’t create more. Remember to keep using moves like holy light (which is very effective against the undead and for healing your units) and resurrection. Once all the undead buildings are destroyed your mission is complete, Arthas has his revenge and you’ve finished the human campaign!

Well, that’s it! I hope this walkthrough has been helpful to you.
