***** Need for Speed ¨C Underground *****

This walkthrough is writen for those who want to enjoy this game to the maximum. If you are the kind of player that uses cheats or things of this sort while playing a game, then do not read my walkthrough. But if you are the kind of player that really like challenges and play games honestly, then this walkthrough is for you.
However my walkthrough does not tell you what to do exactly to beat the game, as driving is very open-ended, but rather gives you informations on how to develop certain skills to become a better driver, and some other tips you might find useful.

UNDERGROUND MODE OVERVIEW :
When you are playing this game for the first time, or are not used to driving games, turn stability control ON and choose AUTO TRANSMISSION. Before going in underground mode, choose a quick race first, attempt all the different types of races, watch the tutorial for DRIFTS and DRAG RACES. Get used to the controls first. When you are at ease, you can select GO UNDERGROUND. Watch the intro ( its quite cool ¨C gives you the impression of being part of the movie Fast and Furious). After the first race, you will be asked to choose a car. Take your decision very carefully as this will be the car you will be using most during the game. You can earn money and trade for another car later, or you might want to keep the money to buy stuffs to upgrade your car( which is what I recommend).

Before going any futher, let me tell you what UNDERGROUND MODE consists of : YOU are a rookie driver who wants to become THE LEGEND OF THE STREET. For this you will have to challenge all the drivers that get in your way to the top. As you have already noticed, there are 5 types of races : CIRCUITS, which consists of driving around a place for a given number of laps, SPRINTS, which consists of racing from one place to another ¨C the first to reach there wins, DRAG, which consists of taking a good start and skillfully changing shift to acquire the maximum speed possible ( this will remind you of the races in Fast and Furios), DRIFTS, which consists of sliding in style to earn big points and KNOCKOUT, which is the same as CIRCUITS, except that the last driver on each lap is eliminated from the race.

At the beginning, your car will be equiped with stock parts only, with a no star reputation. To increase your reputation, you will have to unlock parts and install them on your car. You unlock parts by winning races. When the reputation of your car increases, it means that whatever style points you earned in a race, it will be multiplied by the number of reputation stars your car has. To unlock vinyls, you have to earn big style points. There are many ways of earning style points, such as head start, near miss, powerslide, shortcut etc¡-Once you have installed a vinyl, you can paint it at the vinyl selection screen by pressing SQUARE ¨C remember that the further you go in the games, the more vinyls and parts you unlock. So at the beginning, don¡¯t waste too much time ¡°decorating¡± your car., but make sure you are installing the highest level of bodyparts and performance upgrades available (there are 3 levels).

DRIVING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
Depending on your style, you may prefer a car with better acceleration but low handling, or a car with good handling, good top speed but low acceleration. There are many combinations possible. Keep in mind that ACCELERATION is the factor that determines how fast your car passes from 1st gear to 2nd, 3rd, etc..TOP SPEED is the maximum speed your car can attain, HANDLING is the factor that determines how stable your car is when turning, performing slides and overall driving. Personally, I find that driving a car with best HANDLING, excellent TOP SPEED and great ACCELERATION suits my style, that is my first choice is HANDLING, then TOP SPEED and finally ACCELERATION.

*********************BE A LEGEND***********************

First of all, know your car. As you know, there are 3 attributes that affect the performance of your car :ACCELERATION, TOP SPEED and HANDLING. In underground mode, each time you win a race or tournament, you are awarded a sum of money, the amount depending on whether you chose EASY, MEDIUM or HARD as difficulty. Parts and performance upgrades are also unlocked when you win races.(A complete list of all you can unlock in undergroung mode can also be found in this walkthrough). Remember to install the latest parts or performance upgrades on your can to get the maximum out of it.
Here is a describtion of how you can upgrade your car¡¯s performance:

ENGINE/EXHAUST PACKAGE =========== Improves ACCELERATION
DRIVETRAIN PACKAGE =====Improves TOP SPEED and ACCELERATION
TIRES ==================================== Improves HANDLING

****************PRO DRIVING SCHOOL*******************

In this section, you will learn how to become a TOP DRIVER.

LESSON 1: Manual shifts
LESSON 2: Cornering and braking
LESSON 3: Nitrous Oxide
LESSON 4: Circuit practice
LESSON 5: Drag races
LESSON 6: Drift races

****LESSON 1 : MANUAL SHIFTS****

At MAIN MENU, choose QUICK RACE, FREE PRACTICE, choose any car you like, select MANUAL SHIFT,select OLYMPIC SQUARE.

Before the start, press the pressure sensitive accelerator so that the needle in the tachometer just touches the red section. As soon as Go is signaled, hit the gas to the max. Check your tachometer. When the needle just touches the red section, a green LED will light up. This is the time to change shift to 2nd gear. Repeat the process until you reach the maximum gear available on your car. It is not good if you change shift before the green LED lights up or after it has appeared and is already flashing. Now if you want to reduce speed, brake first before changing shift. Practice until you are comfortable with manual shifts. With experience, you will be able to drive while looking in front of you for traffic, obstacles or your opponents without ¡°fixing¡± at the tachometer to know when to change gear. You will be able to guess that the moment to change gear is near by the sound of the engine of your car ¨C know your car well as different cars have differents engine sounds and behaviour. When you think the time has come to change gear, just glance at the tachometer to check the position of the needle and the status of the green LED to know whether you must change gear immediately or wait a fraction of a second more.

To get back in a race after you hit something like a traffic or a wall, lower to gear 3.
1) If you notice that the car seems to be very slow in accelerating and the needle of the tachometer is almost at the start, it means that you are at a higher gear than you should be. Lower gear again and accelerate.
2) If you notice that the green LED is flashing, it means that you are driving at a lower gear than you should. Increase gear and accelerate.
You can also determine in which of these 2 situations you are by the sound of the engine.
When you are slowing down to turn and have to decrease shift, the same theory is applied.

****LESSON 2 : CORNERING AND BRAKING****

Here, the theory behind cornering and braking is explained. When cornering, you must keep these things in mind :
1) You must do it at the maximum speed possible.
2) You must not hit any traffic, obstacle or your opponents.
3) You should be in a favourable position aththe exit of the corner.

FIG 1

[ ¡ü1]

When you are approaching a corner, your initial position is the key to an excellent cornering. If the corner is on the left, you should position yourself on the far right side of the road and vice-versa (be careful not to hit any obstacles like road signs as this will slow you down a bit).Lets consider the example given in FIG 1: The corner is on your left, so you position yourself at SPOT 1, which is on the far right side of the road, a reasonable distance from the corner itself. Now the timing here is very important. You start start your turn at SPOT 1, but before that, there are 2 things you should take into consideration :
1) The angle of the corner
2) Your current speed
If it is a medium-angled corner, just release the gas for about 1 sec (Your current speed will determine for how long to release the gas just before you reach SPOT 1 With experience you will be able to judge better). When you are at SPOT 1, hit the gas and begin your turn, aiming to go at SPOT 2. You will eventually pass through at SPOT 3 and exit the corner at SPOT 4, where you can decide whether to keep right, to go in the middle of the road or to go to the left side of the road. If it is a tighter turn, you should brake for about 1 sec (again with experience you will be able to judge better for how long to brake before reaching SPOT 1). Once at SPOT 1, the procedure is the same.
In practice, you should take into consideration any traffic on the road or the position of your opponents if they are close. Sometimes they can bang into your car.
In general, while braking, do not turn your car. Brake first, release the brake and turn your car. If you were driving fast, hit something and lost control of your car, do not accelerate, nor brake, nor use the emergency brake. Just try to stabilise your car with the steering wheel. Once stable, hit the gas !!

****LESSON 3 : NITROUS OXIDE****

Nitrous Oxide is used to boost your acceleration considerably, resulting in a great increase in top speed. To take full advantage of Nitrous, you cannot use it anywhere. The best place to use it is on a long straight drive or in a place with easy turns. The worst place to use Nitrous is just before a corner. If you use Nitrous there, your acceleration will be considerably increased but you will have to slow down before cornering or else you will definitely crash against something. So wasn¡¯t it a complete waste of Nitrous? And don¡¯t forget, you don¡¯t have unlimited Nitrous. (If you know a cheat for unlimited Nitrous and you are using it¡-SHAME ON YOU¡-CHEATER!!)
In LESSON 4 and LESSON 5, how to use Nitrous effectively will be shown.

****LESSON 4 : CIRCUIT PRACTICE****
In this lesson, you will practice the first circuit track using all the techniques explained earlier. At the MAIN MENU screen, select QUICK RACE, CIRCUIT, choose your car (better if equipped with Nitrous ¨C you must have played at least until race 15 in underground mode to have unlocked level 1 Nitrous), choose MANUAL TRANSMISSION (if you are not already a pro driver and not comfortable with MANUAL TRANSMISSION, then select AUTO TRANSMISSION),select OLYMPIC STADIUM as track, select OPPONENT SKILL EASY, TRAFFIC NONE.
Take the best start possible and accelerate like a mad dog (refer to LESSON 1 if you are using MANUAL TRANSMISSION). When you reach the first major left corner (CORNER 1), you should be driving in 4th gear. Position yourself on the far right side and turn using the theory explained in LESSON 2.Now continue driving and you will notice that you have 2 options in front:
1) go straight through the shortcut
2) stay on the main road.
Take the shortcut, taking care while exiting (you are now at SECTION 1). Continue to accelerate and you will eventually reach 5th gear. There is a right corner in front so position correctly, taking care not to hit road signs or any other obstacles, and turn. (Note that it is possible to negociate this turn without braking or releasing the accelerator but accelerating all the way before reaching SPOT 1: refer to LESSON 2). At the exit of this corner, there are 3 options :
1) Stay on the right side of the road,
2) Pass throught the small passage in the middle of the road
3) Go to the left side of the road if you did not turn correctly (careful when there is traffic because on this lane they drive in the opposite direction)
Stay on the right side of the road if possible ( you are now at SECTION 2) because you will be able to negociate the left corner ahead more easily.Eventually when you reach this corner, position yourself correctly and turn (Note that it is possible to negociate this turn without braking or releasing the accelerator but accelerating all the way before reaching SPOT 1: refer to LESSON 2). Keep on accelerating and negociate the left corner the same way. (You are now at SECTION 3) Keep going and in front of you ther are 2 options:
1) take to the left ( a bit more tricky)
If you decide to take left, stay in the middle of the road and negociate the slight curves skillfully before negociating the trickier right turn followed by a left turn. Use the theory explained in LESSON 2 to negociate skillfully these 2 turns.
2) take to the right
If you decide to take right, position yourself in the far left side of the road before turning.
No matter which way you choose, you will end up on the same road. Now in front there are again 2 solutions:
1) Take the short cut on the left
If you take the short cut, you will have to reduce speed slightly when exiting the short cut ( SHORT CUT OPTION)
2) Stay on the main road, slighlty curving left. ( You are now at SECTION 4)
If you decide to stay on the main road, it is possible to pass through this section without braking or releasing the accelerator to negociate the slight left curves. Position yourself correctly to the right.
Whether you took the short cut or stayed on the main road, you will eventually continue the race on the same road. After ¡°this point of intersection¡± there is a right turn which can be easily negociate if you have learned your lessons carefully. ( you are now at SECTION 5). Take care. This section of the road is under contruction so wave through carefully. Ahead there is the final left turn before the NEXT LAP/FINISH line.
When approaching the corner named CORNER 1 again, you will be doing it with more speed than during lap 1. Reduce speed and change gear to 4th before turning.
Sections named SECTION 1- SECTION 5 are ideal places where you can use Nitrous. For example, at SECTION 1, there is quite a long way to go before reaching the corner on the right, and again this corner can be negociated without braking. So using Nitrous at SECTION 1 will boost your acceleration and you can take full advantage of the increase in speed also.
Using Nitrous at the SHOTCUT OPTION is not really recommended (unless you are really desperate) as you will have to reduce speed to exit the shortcut.

This is an example of how to drive in a CIRCUIT race. It is very much the same in SPRINT and LAP KNOCK OUT races. Use this example as a guideline to create your own style of driving.

****LESSON 5 : DRAG RACES****

Before the start, press the pressure sensitive accelerator so that a green spot appears in the middle of the screen. You will take the best start this way. If the spot is blue, you will take a good start. If the spot is red you will take a bad start (REV UP). If there is no spot visible, you will take a slow start. Now to change shift skillfully, wait for the same spot to appear. If the spot is green when you change shift, it is an EXCELLENT SHIFT. If the spot is blue, it is a GOOD SHIFT. If the spot is red, it is a REV UP. Take care not to REV UP too often as you might blow your engine. Try to get all excellent shifts. When you reach gear 5, this is the ideal moment to use Nitrous up until you can change to gear 6 with an EXCELLENT SHIFT and keeping on accelerating and using the remaining Nitrous if there is any still left. ( Your can install a six speed transmission on your car if you played at least until race 67 in underground mode).

****LESSON 6 : DRIFTS RACES****

Watch the tutorial to know what DRIFT mode consists of, what you should do to score points, how you can loose points, etc¡-Use the same theory explained in LESSON 2 for turning. But here, you have to slide, not just turn. So in practice, it is slightly different. When you reach SPOT 1, let go of the gas and use the handbrake for about 1 second and turn at the same time, aiming for SPOT 2. Release the handbrake and hit the gas again, while continuing to turn. If you feel that while sliding you will hit the barrier, don¡¯t accelerate nor brake nor use the handbrake. Just control the car¡¯s slide with the steering wheel and when you are in a favourable position, hit the gas again.
Linking drifts means you keep drifting successively in the opposite directions without stopping the initial slide or hitting the barrier. Remember that you will loose all the stye points for a drift if you will the barrier. Stay between the 2 stripes on each side of the track to score higher points.
The style point range is thus:
GOOD DRIFT : POINTS > 1000
GREAT DRIFT : POINTS > 3000
SUPERB DRIFT : POINTS > 7000
COLOSSAL DRIFT : POINTS >15000
OUTRAGEOUS DRIFT : POINTS >20000

FUTHERMORE, I have designed some quite cool cars¨C as I have honestly unlocked everything. My favourite car is a blue Hyundai Coup¨| with some nice vinyls and decals. Remember that you must have unlocked everything to be able to design my cars. To unlock all bodyparts: finish underground mode. To unlock all vinyls : Choose QUICK RACE, DRIFTS, TRACK 6 , choose the number of laps (choose a big number like 10)¨C if you DO NOT have TRACK 6, choose any other drift track but choose a fairly greater number of laps. After the race, you will be given the details of everything that you have just unlocked. Repeat the process if you still have vinyls to unlock. Some cars can also be unlocked this way. Race Types
Circuit - In circuit mode you race other cars around a course. Varies in length from 2 lap races to the longer and harder 6-7 lap races.

Drift - In drift mode you must earn as many points as you can by drifting your car and making it go as sideways as possible round a course. More points for longer drifts and quicker drifts. Points are lost if you crash during a drift.

Drag - You race against other cars in a straight race to the finish. You must shift gears yourself and change lanes to avoid traffic and obstacles along the way.

Sprint - Race from one location to another, no laps like the curcuit.

Lap knockout - Similar to circuit except the last person after each lap is knocked out of the race.

Tournament - Can be any of the above race types. Points are awarded for each race and the person with the most points overall wins.
Race winner gets 8 points, 2nd gets 6, third gets 4 and last gets 2 points.

It would be pointless to go through all the races, ther are over 100 of them and all are fairly straight forward once you learn the track you are racing on.
There are a few pointers you should note though.

NOS: Save your NOS in drag until you are in 5th gear, can use it to get into 6th gear or to get the much needed boost ahead of opponents.
In curcuit and sprint you should save it just incase you crash out and need the quickspeed bursts to get back to the front of the pack.

Upgrades
Upgrades are awarded thoughout the game as you do well. Others can be purchased. Performance upgrades should always be purchased if you have the cash. Visual upgrades improve your style points as you race and also make your ride look better so buy them as you go along to suit the style of car you like.
The performance upgrades improve the three main areas of the cars performance, acceleration, speed and handling.

At times you will also need to trade your car in to get a better car.
I reccoment the Honda Civic to begin with, then the Acura when it is available and finally the Skyline when it is available.

All upgrades purchased can be used in the non-underground modes such as online play/split screen and quick race. Gives you a better chance online.

As you reach the latter levels of the game the races will become harder and you will find that if you crash then chances are you will loose the race. You will have to learn the tracks to work out where you need to brake and where is the best place to use your NOS to full effect. Also working out how your car responds is important, ie how fast can you go round corners.
You may have to play through certain races a few times but you should be able to work out shortcuts and tricks to keeping at the front of the race.

Style points
Style points allow you to unlock extra visual upgrades, so keep trying to build them up thoughout the game and in online play.

ONLINE Play
The trick to online play is to find someone with a car similar to your own, so if you have just started taking on someone with a fully modified Skyline would be a very silly move.
I would recommend playing the underground mode first just to get a car worth racing and also to allow you a better chance online.
All race types can be played online with other players although it usually is the case that the person with the better car will win and also there are a number of cheats that can be used with a cheat cartridge.

So you may find yourself being beaten unfairly, just try and find players you know will race fairly.
