Transmission
Whether you use automatic or manual transmission can make a huge difference in how you race. Manual, although much more difficult to get to grips with, will give you an important speed boost every time you change gear correctly which can really make the difference in the final lap of a close race; change gear at the wrong time, though, and you'll suffer severe speed loss. Automatic transmission will never let you down, however. You won't get the boost, but you're guaranteed no to mess up the gear change on a vital corner and you can concentrate more on trying to steer your way into first place.
If you're just starting out in the game, automatic transmission is definitely recommended but when you fancy a bit more of a challenge you should give manual a try.

Unlockables

As you progress through the game new cars, parts and other image boosting equipment will become available to you... for a price, of course. Here's where you can expect to unlock all the gear that your car could ever dream of....

***** Need for Speed Underground *****

This walkthrough is writen for those who want to enjoy this game to the maximum. If you are the kind of player that uses cheats or things of this sort while playing a game, then do not read my walkthrough. But if you are the kind of player that really like challenges and play games honestly, then this walkthrough is for you.
However my walkthrough does not tell you what to do exactly to beat the game, as driving is very open-ended, but rather gives you informations on how to develop certain skills to become a better driver, and some tips you might find useful.

TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

UNDERGROUND MODE OVERVIEW :
When you are playing this game for the first time, or are not used to driving games, turn stability control ON and choose AUTO TRANSMISSION. Before going in underground mode, choose a quick race first, attempt all the different types of races, watch the tutorial for DRIFTS and DRAG RACES. Get used to the controls first. When you are at ease, you can select GO UNDERGROUND. Watch the intro ( its quite cool gives you the impression of being part of the movie Fast and Furious). After the first race, you will be asked to choose a car. Take your decision very carefully as this will be the car you will be using most during the game. You can earn money and trade for another car later, or you might want to keep the money to buy stuffs to upgrade your car( which is what I recommend).

Before going any futher, let me tell you what UNDERGROUND MODE consists of : YOU are a rookie driver who wants to become THE LEGEND OF THE STREET. For this you will have to challenge all the drivers that get in your way to the top. As you have already noticed, there are 5 types of races : CIRCUITS, which consists of driving around a place for a given number of laps, SPRINTS, which consists of racing from one place to another the first to reach there wins, DRAG, which consists of taking a good start and skillfully changing shift to acquire the maximum speed possible ( this will remind you of the races in Fast and Furios), DRIFTS, which consists of sliding in style to earn big points and KNOCKOUT, which is the same as CIRCUITS, except that the last driver on each lap is eliminated from the race.

At the beginning, your car will be equiped with stock parts only, with a no star grade. To increase your star grade, you will have to unlock parts and install them on your car. You unlock parts by winning races. When the star grade of your car increases, it means that whatever style points you earned in a race, it will be multiplied by your star grade. To unlock vinyls, you have to earn big style points. There are many ways of earning style points, such as head start, near miss, powerslide, shortcut etc Once you have installed a vinyl, you can paint it at the vinyl selection screen by pressing SQUARE remember that the further you go in the games, the more vinyls and parts you unlock. So at the beginning, don't waste too much time decorating your car., but make sure you are installing the highest level of bodyparts and performance upgrades available (there are 3 levels).

DRIVING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Depending on your style, you may prefer a car with better acceleration but low handling, or a car with good handling, good top speed but low acceleration. There are many combinations possible. Keep in mind that ACCELERATION is the factor that determines how fast your car passes from 1st gear to 2nd, 3rd, etc..TOP SPEED is the maximum speed your car can attain, HANDLING is the factor that determines how stable your car is when turning, performing slides and overall driving. Personally, I find that driving a car with best HANDLING, excellent TOP SPEED and great ACCELERATION suits my style, that is my first choice is HANDLING, then TOP SPEED and finally ACCELERATION.

TURNING

Turning efficiently your car might be quite a challenge. When turning, you must keep these things in mind : not to hit any obstacle like walls this will make you loose speed-, not to hit any vehicles this can be very dangerous as you have to restart from 1st or 2nd gear most of the time-, be sure you are turning at the maximum speed possible, otherwise you will be loosing speed unnecessarily.

How to turn efficiently?
First of all, you have to be aware at what speed you are going. Then determine whether the turn is a sharp one, a right-angled one or an easy one. For an easy turn, you can simply let go of the gas for 1 or 2 seonds and hit the gas again. For a sharp or a right-angled one , you have to brake for 1 or 2 seconds (depending on your speed) just before you start to turn if you are good at sliding, use the handbrake instead.

Positioning is very important when turning. When the turn is on the right, position yourself the futhest to the left possible and vice-versa. When turning, aim for the spot marked by a ! in the diagram.

I hope that you will find my walkthrough helpful to get into the UNDERGROUND WOLRD. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. I will personally see to it that I can resolve your particular problem. This I why I have not posted other things in my walkthrough as I want to treat each difficulty any player might encounter INDIVIDUALLY.

Things you can email me for:
Questions concerning the Underground Mode, like unlockable cars, tips to master a particular track, etc Advanced driving technics, like manual shifting... Anything you think might help you.

FUTHERMORE, I have designed some quite cool cars as I have honestly unlocked everything. If you want I can give you the details. My favourite car is a blue Hyundai Coupé with some nice vinyls and decals, completely tuned up. Remember that you must have unlocked everything to be able to design my cars. To unlock all bodyparts: finish underground mode. To unlock all vinyls : Choose QUICK RACE, DRIFTS, TRACK 6 , choose the number of laps (choose a big number like 10) if you DO NOT have TRACK 6, choose any other drift track but choose a fairly greater number of laps. After the race, you will be given the details of everything that you have just unlocked. Repeat the process if you still have vinyls to unlock. Some cars can also be unlocked this way. You must finish underground mode first and you cannot customize these cars.

Nice driving.
Good luck!
