INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my Metal Gear Solid: TTS guide. In this guide I will explain to you all the basics of MGS, including weaponry and tactics, and how to take on all the bosses.

RADAR MODES

In normal mode, your radar is displayed fully and you are the white dot and the green light is your field of vision. The red dots are the enemies, and their vision is split into yellow, blue and red light depending on the situation.

BLUE

This means the enemy is acting normally, not being aware that you are there and following normal precautions and routes they take. Sometimes they’ll be sleeping, or distracted by other guards giving you the perfect opportunity to use the tranquiliser.

YELLOW

This means the guard is cautious. He has seen you, but doesn’t know where you are. This means more guards will enter the area and guards will take different routes to what they usually do. When the caution gauge is empty, all guards will return to their normal ways.

RED

This means you have been spotted, and then your radar will disappear and an attack team will be sent to find you. Now you must hide in a good place so that the guards can’t find you during evasion mode.

Alert mode will be sounded if a guard finds another dead guard, so be sure to hide all bodies that you kill. In some areas, your radar will jam, meaning you can’t use it. But in these areas the cameras and radios won’t work either so it counts against the enemy too.

DOG TAGS

Dog Tags are new to MGS, and are just there for your personal satisfaction. For every difficulty, there is a set of dog tags. To get them, sneak up behind an enemy, then go into first person mode. Snake will then shout ‘Freeze’. The soldier will then snake and may drop a dog tag. Make sure you kill the enemy afterwards as they may try to shoot you.

STEALTH

Stealth will obviously play a major part in your MGS game, and you’ll find that the A.I in MGS are very intelligent, even more advanced than the enemies in Splinter Cell. Here are the best ways to avoid enemies:

BIG OBSTACLES

One excellent way of taking out guards is using large obstacles or walls to hide behind as a guard comes for you. If an enemy hears you, equip your M9 and back against the wall. Then, slowly creep toward the corner the guard is, then jump out and shoot him with the M9. This is a very good method of ambushing an enemy.

SMALL OBSTACLES

Small obstacles, such as desks and crates, aren’t good for using to sneak up on people, but they are good for hiding behind. You can crouch behind small obstacles and an enemy won’t usually sopt you. If he does, he can’t get a good shot at you, giving you the chance to jump up and surprise him. If there are multiple obstacles to hide behind, go for the one nearest the corner of a room, as the guards are lees likely to look there.

LOCKERS

Lockers are one of the best items to use to hide yourself. Lockers are spread all over the facility, and most of them are open. If you’re being searched for, you can hide in a locker and look through the grille to see the enemies. There are also items in lockers. However, as I have said, the enemies are very intelligent and they do look in lockers.

If your view changes to third person whilst your in a locker, that means the guard is about to open it, and there’s not much you can do. You can’t use weapons in lockers, but they are a very good place to hide if you’re being searched.

BODIES

Whenever you kill an enemy, just like in Splinter Cell you must hide it otherwise other guards will find it and sound the alarm. A good place to hide them is in lockers. If you un-equip your weapon you can drag bodies around. You can then place them in lockers. If you want to rid of the body, open the locker and the body will fall on the floor, flash and disappear. Unrealistic I know, but there we are.

If you can’t find a locker, the best place to hide them is in a dark place or behind and obstacle. Never drag a body in open daylight as you’re asking for trouble, and always stick to dark places to evade guards.

COVERING YOUR TRACKS

If your health bar is in the orange zone, Snake will start to drip blood. This blood will leave a trail and guards will follow this trail, and may end up finding you. So, if you’re dripping blood, try to take routes that the guards don’t. If you have a bandage, you can use that to cover Snake’s wound, which should be used if you’re bleeding.

UNDERNEATH OBSTACLES

A great place you can hide is underneath some obstacles. If there are no guards in sight, you can crawl under some obstacles, and then you can use your M9 on a guard’s foot, if there is one, at the end of whatever you’re crawling through. However, if you are seen, which is unlikely, unless you make a loud noise, you will have to get out of there fast as crawling is very slow and gives the enemy time to shoot you.

INFRARED LASERS

Infrared lasers are the most annoying trap in the game. They appear in many rooms and triggering them leads to either a hoard of enemies on your tail, or the room filling with poisonous gas. There are two ways to avoid them. You can either light a cigarette and the smoke will reveal them, but this way your health will drop, because smoking is bad for you.

The best way is to use your thermal goggles to detect them. Still lasers you can crawl under, but moving lasers will require timing. When you use your goggles, beware of your surroundings as you can’t see the floor or walls when you wear them.

CAMERAS

There are two types of camera: Security which sounds the alarm and triggers many guards if it sees you, and the Sentry camera which is equipped with a large gun that will shoot you if you come into sight. You can see a cameras line of sight on your radar, so you can avoid them. But the best way to take out a camera is to use your SOCOM. Once out of sight, use it to stop the camera. When you re-enter a room, the camera will be working again, so be careful.

ESCAPING

Sometimes, even if you’re in a good hiding place, a guard may find you and give chase. There are a few ways to escape from a guard, depending on the situation. If you have a good gun, such as the FAMAS, your best option is to stand and fight. However, don’t aim at the guards as they’ll shoot you before you can get a shot in. The FAMAS is a machine gun, so it’s perfect for that situation.

Your other option if you don’t have any good weapons is to basically run. You can run into water, because guards don’t follow you there, but watch for your oxygen and health levels. Alternatively you can just keep running around different places until the guard loses you, then you must find a good hiding place when you enter evasion mode until the guards go back into normal mode.

WEAPONS

M9 TRANQUILIZER

A new addition to MGS, and probably the weapon you will most use in the game. The M9 is a dart gun that puts enemies to sleep, no matter where you hit them. It is the most silenced gun in the game, and uses small darts which are not noticed by the enemy. When a guard falls asleep, little Zs will appear around him. He will eventually wake up though, so it’s a good idea to silence your SOCOM and kill him so he can’t come back.

The M9 should only be used for stealthy kills, which is mostly all the time, and is a very useful weapon. It can also be used against bosses, as it wears down their secondary meter.

SOCOM

The SOCOM is a semi-automatic pistol that can fire quite rapidly and shoots on bullet at a time. The SOCOM though is quite a noisy gun, and not very powerful so don’t use it against a large amount of enemies. You can also get a silencer for this gun, and you should always aim for head0shots when using it. A good gun for single enemies.

This is also the best gun for taking out cameras, because it takes them out easily and quickly and it just seems to do the most damage against them.

FA – MAS

The FAMAS is an assault rifle, and as the name suggests, it should be used for assaulting – large groups of enemies. The FAMAS will go through ammo very quickly, and is also very noisy. Do not use this for stealthy kills; instead use this when hoards of guards are chasing you.

The FAMAS is quite weak, but due to the speed that it fires at, it can take out many enemies at once very quickly. If you don’t have much ammo for this, don’t use it and also never use this in boss battles as it’s quite weak.

PSG1

The PGS1 is a sniper rifle, and is obviously used to take out enemies from a distance. Never use this in close fighting or against large amounts of enemies as you’ll be ripped to shreds due to the slow speed that it fires at.

PSG1 also makes a lot of noise, so be careful when using it. Apart from the boss battles with the Wolf, you’ll very rarely use this gun, but it can be devastating against guards in other buildings by zooming in on them and firing.

PSG1 – T

The PSG1 is the second sniper rifle in MGS, and the T stands for Tranquilizer, so you’ve probably have guessed that this gun is for putting enemies to sleep, like the M9. Apart from that it is exactly the same as the PSG1 and all the same precautions should be taken whilst using it.

GRENADE

The grenade is an explosive weapon that is thrown at the enemy, as you might have guessed. In MGS, the grenade is timed, and you’ll have five seconds to clear the area before the grenade blows. Grenades are very powerful and explode over quite a large radius, although they make a lot of noise. Best used against unsuspecting large amounts of enemies, like throwing the grenade into a room with lots of enemies and running. The longer you hold the fire button, the further you will throw it and vice versa.

CHAFF GRENADE

Chaff Grenades when thrown do not cause damage; they simply jam all electronic equipment within a certain radius for a limited time. You won’t really use these much throughout the game, but they are useful. They work the same as grenades, but without the big band at the end.

STUN GRENADE

The third type of grenade in the game is more useful than the Chaff, but still shouldn’t be used that often. Stun Grenades flash when they explode, blinding all people that look at it for a short time, including yourself. They are useful for surprising and disabling large amounts of enemies and work the same as the other grenades.

C4 BOMB

The C4 remote bomb is a very powerful explosive that can be set down in a certain place and explodes when you want it to. It does a large amount of damage, and can be placed onto a guard’s route and set off when he walks over it. However, due to the amount of noise I wouldn’t recommend you use this all the time.

CLAYMORE

The Claymore is a devastating anti-personal mine that are laid down on the ground like land mines. To avoid them, you must use your radar and mine detectors, or alternatively you can crawl slowly across them as this won’t set them off.

If an enemy walks onto, he’s dead. Claymores can be disarmed and then picked up and used for your own personal use. Very powerful explosives that should be used against hoards of unsuspecting enemies.

STINGER

The Stinger is a missile launcher that’s very powerful and very fun to use. It fires explosive rockets, and comes with a lock-on mode so you can hit enemies accurately. However, it explodes over a very large radius so be careful when you use it. Use against mass amounts of enemies for full effect, and it’s also very loud so expect more enemies to flood in when you use it.

NIKITA

The Nikita missile launcher is a very destructive weapon that is controlled by radio. When you fire it, you will instantly have a first-person view from the missile and you must guide the missile to where you want it to detonate. There is a meter in the top, and that’s the amount of time you have got before the missile detonates.

Although there are restrictions, like the fact you can’t use it when electrical equipment in the area has been jammed, and it’s very rare, the Nikita is a devastating weapon to use. But you will hardly ever use it in the game.

ITEMS

BOOK

The book, or rather magazine, is filled with pornographic material (unfortunately you can’t look at it) and can be used as a distraction to a guard. Lay it on the floor and if a guard sees it, he will come over and have a look, the dirty pervert! This gives you the chance to sneak past or kill him. Not very common, be useful to use if you have a book.

MAGAZINE

A magazine is an ammunition clip for your weapons. You can throw it when it’s empty, just like a grenade, and use it as a distraction t the guards. You won’t really use it that much, and it isn’t really helpful.

AP SENSOR

The AP Sensor is used to detect where enemies are. Although this might sound brilliant at first, you really don’t need it as your radar will tell you where are. If you do use it, your controller will rumble when you are near an enemy giving you a chance to hide.

BANDAGE

Bandages can be found pretty much anywhere, and their only purpose is to cover a wound Snake may have and stop it bleeding so that guards can’t follow your blood trail and discover you, like I explained earlier.

BANDANA

The Bandana is basically a reward for you if you complete the game with ending one by making sure Meryl lives. The Bandana will reward you with infinite ammo, giving you plenty of fun with the enemies.

BODY ARMOUR

Body armour is very rare and will only deal half damage to you when you get hit by an enemy. If can be a lifesaver, but is very rare so don’t get too excited. When you find it though, use it.

CAMERA

The camera adds a little fun to the game. You can use the camera to take pictures of your surroundings and situations, then save them and you can then name them and altar them. Some places that you photograph will come out as ghost pictures. Ghost pictures are snapshots of the game’s developers. The camera isn’t important; it just adds fun to the game.

CARDBOARD BOXES

Boxes can be picked up and used to hide under. You can move whilst under them, and they are an alternative to lockers. Guards may become suspicious if they see the box move or change place, and some boxes will take you to different areas.

CARD LV. X KEYS

The LV. stands for a number between one and seven. Card keys open rooms with the corresponding numbers on them, and are usually given to you by people throughout the game.

CIGARETTES

Cigarettes are good and bad. If you use them, firstly your hand will stop shaking when you aim in sniper mode, and secondly you can use the smoke to detect infra-red lasers if you haven’t got the thermo goggles. However, when you use them your health drops, so it’s not an item I would recommend.

GAS MASK

Obviously, a gas mask will protect you to a certain extent against poisonous gasses. You won’t use this much in the game, unless you set of infra-red lasers all the time.

HANDKERCHIEF

The handkerchief is only used in the caves area. Sniper Wolf has a few dogs, and as soon as they smell you they will try to rip you to pieces. If you equip the hanky, it has some of Wolf’s scent on it so they will follow you around but they won’t attack you. A lifesaver at times, but very rarely used.

KETCHUP

Again only used once, the ketchup you must use once you escape from the cell. Lie on the floor and use the ketchup to make the guard think your dead. Then when he turns, you can kill him.

PAL KEY

The Pal Key is used for shutting down Metal Gear and nothing else. You must insert it into the computer to shut it down. After that, you don’t need it.

PENTAZEMIN

Pentazemin are solely used to stop Snake’s hands shaking when he’s sniping. They are found in the caves and are very useful when you’re taking out Sniper Wolf.

MEDICINE

If you stay out in cold areas for long amounts of time, Snake will develop a cold, and his sneezing will attract the guards. The medicine is used to cure Snake of his cold. You will rarely catch a cold so you won’t need medicine much.

MINE DETECTOR

The Mine Detector is simply used to detect claymores in the ground and allow you to avoid them. You won’t use this much, as you can crawl over claymores, but they are useful.

MO DISC

Given to you by President Barker and needed by Ocelot, so it’s useless to you. Just ignore it.

NIGHTVISION GOGGLES

Nightvision goggles obviously let you see in the dark. They appear in most shooting games and MGS is no different. They let you see more than thermo goggles, but aren’t as useful. You’ll need them however in the caves and other areas.

RATION

A ration is basically a health pack. They are found everywhere and increase your health by a small amount. You can equip them so when you run out of health, a ration is automatically used to keep you alive. All games include health packs, and MGS is no different.

ROPE

Ropes are basically used to ascend or descend down a certain thing. You won’t use ropes much in the game and are only used purposely in the game.

SCOPE

The Scope is basically a pair of binoculars, and you can use them to see far away at what the enemy is doing. You won’t use the scope much, but it’s useful to plan ahead to the next area and see what guards are on patrol there.

SOCOM SUPPRESSOR

This is basically a silencer for the SOCOM pistol. It’s should be used on your SOCOM as then you won’t attract guards far away when you fire it.

STEALTH

Like the Bandana, this is a reward for completing the game. If you complete the game on ending 2, where Meryl dies, your next game will give you the Stealth camouflage instead of the binoculars. It makes you completely invisible, and guards can’t see you unless you trip an infra-red wire. Very fun to use.

THERMAL GOGGLES

Thermo goggles are another common item in most shooting game, and they obviously the colours you see determine the amount of heat an object gives out. They are needed to see infra-red lasers, but if an object doesn’t give out heat, like the floor, you can’t see it, so be careful.

TIME BOMB

Time Bombs are evil items. There are only two in the game, and they will appear in your inventory when you complete a certain task. Once the timer runs out, they explode. When you get a time bomb, throw it out and quickly run to a safe place. Time Bombs will always explode after a few seconds if you throw them, regardless of the time left on them.

BOSS BATTLES

REVOLVER OCELOT

Difficulty – Medium
Location – Armoury

Ocelot will run around the room staying as far from you as he can. Stand in the corner of the room and use the first person mode and shoot any parts of Ocelot that are visible. Ocelot can only fire six shots before reloading, so that’s your time to strike.

Do not go anywhere near the wires in the centre of the room as they will kill you instantly, and remember you must kill Ocelot before Barker’s health runs out and he dies.

VULCAN RAVEN

Difficulty – Hard
Location – Canyon

Firstly, collect all the grenades in the area, then throw a Chaff grenade toward the tank to distract the gunman. Now throw a normal grenade into the turret to damage the gunner. Don’t take too long when aiming and remember that the tank tracks can be destroyed if you grenade them, making it easier to hit the turret.

Never get too near the tank as it will quickly run you over. If you need supplies run around the outside of the area and collect items around there.

NINJA

Difficulty – Hard
Location – Nuke Building B2

You can only hurt the Ninja by punching and kicking. Any shots fired at him he will dodge. When the Ninja attacks you, he is invincible. You must follow him round, not getting too close, and then when he finishes his attack, quickly jump in and perform a three-hit combo. Once finished, back off as this is the only time he can get hurt.

When Ninja’s health gets low, he will change tactics. He will walk toward you, then warp over you and start punching. You must hit Ninja in the brief moment after he stops attacking.

PSYCHO MANTIS

Difficulty – Hard
Location – Nuke Building B1

As soon as you start, use the M9 on Meryl to knock her out so that she doesn’t get in the way. When Mantis appears, use a powerful gun to attack him. When you start to realise that nothing is hitting Mantis, that’s because he’s reading your mind. To counter this, plug the controller into a different port and go again, and keep repeating this when he reads your mind. Only shoot Mantis after he attacks.

Mantis will also throw furniture around the room. To avoid this, crouch and lie on the floor as they won’t hit you. When Mantis is weak, he will start to unleash energy balls. Simply roll to avoid these.

SNIPER WOLF

Difficulty – Easy
Location – Underground Passage

Lie on the floor on your stomach, then use the pentazemin to steady Snake’s hand. Lie in the middle at the end of the passage and use the PSG1 to take out the Wolf. You can spot her by looking out for her breath that’s visible in the cold. That will give her position away. If she hits you, zoom out then zoom back in.

LIQUID SNAKE IN HIND D

Difficulty – Easy
Location – Communication Tower B

Equip your Stinger, and watch the indicator to get an idea of where the Hind D is. Follow the cross-hairs when the helicopter comes into view and when locked on fire. Now run around for a bit until the Hind recovers then repeat the process. Once you fire the final shot, make sure you get away from the fuel tanks, and use bandages if you take a heavy hit and start bleeding.

SNIPER WOLF 2

Difficulty – Easy
Location – Snow Field

Position Snake roughly in the middle of the area. Now take some pentazemin and zoom in. Now scan the trees for the Wolf and start shooting at her. It is possible to complete this without her taking a shot at you. Again, like the first battle her frosty breath will give her position away.

VULCAN RAVEN 2

Difficulty – Hard
Location – Cargo Elevator

Firstly plant claymores around the junctions and wait for the Vulcan to walk over them. That should wear his life down. Once you have run out of mines, either use the PSG1 or the Stinger against him. Follow him around and fire when he’s not expecting it.

Make sure Vulcan doesn’t appear behind you as he can seriously wear down your health. He walks in a random pattern, so don’t expect him to appear in a certain place.

METAL GEAR

Difficulty – Medium
Location – Underground Base

When you start, run to the back of the room and hide behind the last pillar. While you are here, the Metal Gear can’t really attack you, so you’re safe. After it has fired a round of missiles at you, step out and use the Stinger to destroy the radar dome on the right side of the robot.

When it starts firing, hide behind the pillar and repeat this process until the dome is destroyed, then aim for its open mouth. Don’t get too close as the Metal Gear will crush you.

LIQUID SNAKE 2

Difficulty – Hard
Location – Underground Base

For Liquid Snake you will have to use your fists. The only time you can attack him is when he runs around. When he’s attacking, stay well away from him. If Liquid Snake crouches, it means he’s about to do a charging attack. Make sure you avoid this, and if you hit him to the floor, don’t get too close as he’ll kick you when he gets up. Once you beat Liquid Snake you will have beat all the bosses.

Thankyou for reading my guide and I hope it helped you understand more about MGS and eased you through the boss battles.
