This game is also available on PS2.
This is a guide on all weapons available. I will also provide a few hints and tips as to how it could be possibly used effectively in both single player and multiplayer aspects. If they don’t appear in Multiplayer or single player then I’ll say so.
[Fists]
Simply enough using your fists for close quarter work. The fists will probably come in use in the many levels where you attempt to do breakouts, stealth work and when you’re low on equipment. The Fists have a nifty one hit take down as well. Which is, you know, handy for stealth purposes.
/Single player advice\
Unless it’s for stealth work and when you start off with little equipment, don’t bother with using them. Anyone with a gun will make short work of you. For best results for stealth take downs, use stealth walking by walking slower and then when close enough, run up to him and hit him before he turns around. Even if you do get spotted and the stealth trick doesn’t work, you could always continuously pound the person till he collapses as your fists have a stunning capability, which can stop the enemy retaliating as you pound him.
/Multiplayer advice\
N/A Weapon is not used in this mode.
[Throwing knives]
A sharp knife in that you can throw in primary setting and something you can stab with in secondary mode. Can do instant take downs when thrown to the head.
/Single player advice\
This weapon has its uses, firstly, instant take down, second it saves ammo on all the other weapons. But To make use with this weapon you have to be very accurate and in most levels it’s a bit difficult to use these frequently. The stabbing feature is nice as you can still score a single hit kill as you stab them in the head. That’s regardless if they’re alert or not. In short, has its uses, but you shouldn’t rely on these heavily and should be used where possible as to save ammunition.
/Multiplayer advice\
N/A Weapon is not used in this mode.
[Grenade]
A hand grenade with a 5-second fuse. Hold down the fire button for however long you want to delay the time. Secondary mode you drop the grenade down on your feet. Make sure you don’t blow yourself to pieces when using it. In multiplayer you use Frag grenades whilst in single player they can only be picked up.
/Single player advice\
This weapon does have it uses. For starters, this weapon can bounce so you can bounce it off walls to get a desired target. Second when you’re using it against large numbers of people or when you have the advantage of being unnoticed, throwing these grenades can provide for some pleasing results. The enemy is sometimes sharp enough to see the grenades and run away from them. That’s when a delayed throw could help you. As this allows less time for them to run and increasing the chance that you’ll catch the enemy in the explosion. The secondary function isn’t too useful as you’ll find very few opportunities that’ll want to drop instead of throw the grenade, but when ever you go down an air vent or tunnel of any kind and some one is directly underneath where you’re going, you could drop one there. The only real disadvantage is that you can’t decide how far you want to throw the grenade as its predetermined and that throwing distance is quite far.
/Multiplayer advice\
This weapon is great for flushing out enemy snipers, campers and killing people who are indirectly aim at your position. This weapon is great on large numbers of people trying to kill each other so Deathmatch, this weapon can prove useful. The tip here is to try and get above the fighting if possible and hurling them down on top of the crowd. This will cause all manner of chaos. But if you’re smart you could time your attack, you can kill/ delay pursuers when you throw one to cover your escape through corridors or air vents.
[Flashbang]
A hand held device which, when thrown and detonated it produces a large sound as to surprise and stun. Weapon can temporally blind people if they were close to the explosion at the time. Can be dropped or thrown. 5 second fused.
/Single player advice\
N/A weapon is not used in this mode
/multiplayer advice\
This actually works quite well making quick escapes in both Deathmatch and Team games as well as assaulting. The idea is to throw them down as to delay pursuers as they chase you. Great in capture the flag levels. If you want to use it as assault, use it when entering heavily guarded rooms as to blind people as you enter. If there are 2 of you this is great as one can blind them and another enters to clear the place out. Swat tactics there. Its great to use on areas that people would guard their flags in capture the flag levels.
[.44 special (colt)]
One of 2 pistols you can get your hands on. This one is a six-chambered revolver. You’ll use this weapon frequently when up against the mongoose’s cronies.
/single player advice\
This gun is very powerful and both you and the enemy can make short work of opponents. For stealthy missions, this is not the gun. It makes one hell of a racket and does not come with silencer unlike the other one. Its range is pretty good and its possible to do some decent accurate shooting from long ranges (obviously not as good as the sniper rifle). Its major downfall is because it’s a revolver, it means that it has a small clip and you could be reloading quite often and it could be fatal in critical situations. So the best thing really is to reload as frequently as you can (If possible, after each kill) and going for head shots.
/Multiplayer advice\
Although a lot stronger then the 9mm pistol, the .44 special’s limited clip means that you’ll be reloading frequently and its not particularly great in long periods of intense fighting or in deathmatches at all. It’s best you use this weapon as a last resort before going down to the 9mm.
[9mm pistol]
A handgun that carries 13 bullets in its clip. The gun can be used with a silencer for silent takedowns. Dual pistol support is also provided and can be toggled by the secondary function button. Frequently found on police officers and military personnel. Silencers can be acquired on stealth levels.
/Single player advice\
This gun is weaker then the .44 and this might mean that you might have to shoot the person twice in the head if you want to make sure of a head shot kill. The silencer is great for stealth purposes, but again, its still weak and would require 2 shots to kill a person. However, despite this problem, this gun should be the weapon carried around in stealth missions to eliminate close and medium ranged enemies. To maximise performance, try using it around corners so when an enemy walks to the end of the corridor, you shoot him on the side of the head before he sees you. Dual support does improve things considerably as you can fill the enemy with twice as many bullets at a time. Perfect for quick pot shots and hiding again. However, accuracy over a long distance might suffer when firing with 2 pistols which doesn’t help when you’re trying to do well aimed head shots from a long distance. A benefit of this gun is that the large clip means you don’t have to reload as often and you will last slightly longer in fights.
/Multiplayer advice\
The great thing about this weapon is that ammo for it is infinite. As you finish the clip, it provides a fresh one each time. So when ever you need to defend yourself, this weapon will give you some fighting chance against another opponent. But there are more powerful weapons out there and this should be used as a last resort. Tactics wise, you could simply just fire continuously till one of you die or you pick up a better weapon.
[Minigun]
A micro uzi that has 33 ammo clip. The gun has dual support and can be activated via the use of the secondary function. You’ll find this gun occasionally used by the mongoose’s men and the guards.
/Single player advice\
Its a machine gun pistol to best describe it. The gun does shoot a hell of a lot of bullets when firing and can eat through ammo reserves quickly. For a close quarter weapon, when accuracy isn’t an issue, this is the job. But the gun can become very inaccurate over long ranges as the bullets disperse around the cross hairs rather then focusing all the bullets in one area. Which doesn’t help at all. But for a cheap weapon for corridor fighting this is good. Try and focus your shooting near the top of the torso of an enemy and use it no further then medium range. Sometimes you might be able to overrun enemy positions and this weapon might be the weapon of choice.
/multiplayer advice\
Minigun is an effective alternative to a rifle. Provided accuracy isn’t an issue, you might be onto an effective weapon in most of the Deathmatch levels as they are tight and rooms are mostly small. Accuracy is affected by the range, which doesn’t help when accurate long-range shots are needed or in large rooms. The speed that it eats through its clip is fast, so reload when ever possible when using this weapon and make sure its behind some cover and in some protective corner as to prevent being ambushed from behind.
[Crossbow]
This weapon shoots a single bolt at a time and has a zoom ability for long distance sniping as a secondary function. Zoom visions include 3x and 8x. For best performance, you should wait till the cross hairs are completely still. This can be seen with the blue bar when in a zoomed in state. The earlier models require you to reload after each shot whilst later models in the game allow you to shoot 3 times before reloading. You’ll find that this weapon would be issued to you in stealth missions frequently and when fighting sanctuary guards.
/Single player advice\
Since this is frequently issued when stealth is required in the game, you should use this weapon. It’s much more silent then a sniper rifle. As mentioned, once in a zoomed in state, there is a blue bar that has to drain in order to keep the cross hairs still. Till you get the sniper skill, you’ll have to cope with this. The best strategy would be to zoom to 3x and wait for the blue bar to drain. If you instantly switch from 3x to 8x zoom instantly, the bar becomes significantly higher and it will take longer to steady XIII’s aim. When using this gun, make sure the first shot hits the head, anywhere else WON’T kill the enemy. Another factor affecting the crossbow is whether the enemy is wearing armour on his head (ie a helmet) if he is he won’t die from the first shot, as that will merely penetrate the helmet and expose his head afterwards. By which time he’s alert, but rarely, in any stealth-based missions will you see any of these people walking around. Just make sure you kill the enemy in the first shot as he’ll probably be in an alert state and hit an alarm if you miss. For later levels a second model crossbow allows you to shoot up to 3 times before reloading. So there’s much more room for error and the possibility of taking out multiple targets at a time. Don’t use this as a weapon for assaults, it’s not useful. Firstly, in its unzoomed state, there’s no cross hair so aiming is going to be difficult. Second, it only holds only a few bolts at a time. If you shoot it, you have to reload. Not good when up against multiple enemies or even a one on one.
/Multiplayer advice\
N/A weapon is not used in this mode.
[Harpoon gun]
An underwater harpoon gun. Its secondary function is the use of the harpoon as a close quarter stabbing weapon that can kill people instantly so the need to switch weapons for stealth attacks isn’t required. Found only in the sub pen when divers use it or as a pick up.
/Single player advice\
For under water purposes, this is the perfect weapon. Shoot an enemy anywhere with the harpoon and they die. But on surface, you might find this gun less useful. Although accuracy wise you can catch people in the head better then the unzoomed state of the crossbow, it isn’t advised that this weapon is used as an assault weapon because, like the crossbow, it has to reload after every shot. Furthermore under circumstances of the location you find this weapon, it isn’t a replacement for an AR. But the gun does allow for close quarter stealthy takedowns, as it can stab people with the harpoon so switching to another weapon isn’t required for silent takedowns.
Multiplayer advice\
N/A weapon is not used in this mode.
[Kasha (ak47)]
Its proper name, the AK 47. it can fire in 2 settings: burst and auto. Has a clip containing 30 rounds. Mostly found when fighting the mongoose’s men and sanctuary guards.
/Single player advice\
For intense closer quarter fighting to medium fighting this is good. But for long range fighting, this rifle isn’t really effective. When holding down the trigger, it recoils upwards, which doesn’t help when you need plenty of quick shots. In fact, this gun becomes very inaccurate faster then the AR. Long range fighting you’ll want to carry a pistol or a gun with sniper capabilities and not bother using this. If you really must have head shots, try and line up the gun so that when firing and it recoils upwards, you shoot the person in the head as it goes up. Burst setting should be considered when trying to make long range accurate shots as it only shoots a few bullets at a time, which would be more concentrated then firing on auto setting hence, increasing accuracy. Bad news is that after bursting each time, there’s a delay which give the enemy time to fire back at you.
/Multiplayer advice\
Any rifle would be better then a pistol for fighting and should be one of the main weapons of multiplayer. Your best chance really is to circle strife and make sure you can do shots to the head. Secondary function isn’t particularly helpful here unless it’s up close and every shot is guaranteed a hit. Bursting isn’t advised as Deathmatch games the delay doesn’t help and the fact it only shoots a couple bullets at a time doesn’t help. Neverless, if you want accurate shooting or you’re good with the gun you can use this setting.
[Assault rifle]
An M16 with a handy grenade launcher attached to it, which can be activated with the secondary function. Found frequently when fighting SPAD soldiers and other military personnel.
/Single player advice\
This is a good staple weapon for most of the levels in the game. The gun has plenty of ammo, accuracy is relatively good and range isn’t bad at all. To shoot long-range targets aim and fire a shot at a time, bursting will get you no where against long-range targets. Again, it suffers from the problem of the gun recoiling upwards. Thankfully, the recoil of this gun isn’t as high as the Kasha, but provided you line up the shot and when it recoils upwards it hits them in the head, this should solve the problem. Another advantage over the kasha is its built on grenade launcher. This secondary shot is incredibly useful from taking out huge number of people to killing bosses. A couple of the AR grenades will kill most bosses in seconds. The bad news is that ammo for this is limited and should be used carefully. Overall a great, highly reliable weapon.
/Multiplayer advice\
Again, this should be one of the main weapons you should use for multiplayer. Its uses are wide and the grenade launcher is perfect for taking out multiple targets at once or using it to catch someone in the face directly. Also it isn’t bad as a defence weapon if you use it properly in straight corridors. Highly recommend.
[Sniper rifle]
A rifle specialised in long range shooting. Secondary function allows you to zoom in closer and snipe people. Zoom ranges include x3 and x10.
/Single player advice\
Sniper rifles always has its uses in this game and by far, this is the best sniping gun. Its range is the longest and it has a relatively large clip as to maintain continuous fire unlike the crossbow, which reloads after one or 3, shots. Again, you need time to straighten the cross hairs and the best way would be to go to x3 and then once the bar’s drained switch to x10 if required.
/Multiplayer advice\
Unless you can snipe under pressure and incredibly quickly, then this weapon is not so effective In Deathmatch. You could try camping but that’s dishonourable and few maps allow for effective camping sites. Best to avoid using this weapon at all really. In team games such as sabotage and capture the flag, it can prove useful for covering areas and covering assaults if you’re an attacker. But generally, unless you’re well skilled in this weapon, you shouldn’t really resort to this weapon at all.
[Pump action Shotgun]
The pump action version has 5 shells in its chamber. Its secondary function is the use of the rifle butt to hit someone. Found frequently when fighting the mongoose’s men.
/Single player advice\
Early levels, this is all right, but for later levels, when enemies tend to fight you at a distance, this weapon isn’t so hot. Switch to this weapon when you want to clear small areas or corridors or deliver immense damage close up. Like on unsuspecting baddies and bosses who are hiding around corners or are close. You can use this weapon long range, but each of the metal pellets that spray out each time you fire won’t be concentrated and few will hit your enemy. Another problem is reloading after each shot as it does frustrate. Therefore you should shoot and hide whilst reloading and pop out again just to shoot. The fact that this weapon can inflict heavy damage, its great for ambush tactics as well. Provided you made the first hit count, you’re fine. The secondary function is a bit useless and you’ll find very few opportunities to use it. Best left unused really. Enemies will use this weapon through out the game and they’ll use it whatever the range. Be careful, even at long ranges, they somehow are able to deal some heavy damage at times (although not as much as close quarter fighting). Caution is advised and you should attempt as much long range fighting as possible and attempt to take them out as fast as possible.
/Multiplayer advice\
This weapon is great for multiplayer when things get tight and combat gets brutal like in most of the multiplayer maps. Although it’s not as good as the AR or the kasha as a weapon of choice for multiplayer, it’s better then having a pistol This weapon in multiplayer is brilliant for campers out there. So camping is a good strategy to actually employ when using the shotgun. Its not so hot on assaults though unless the area is tight due to its short range. If you choose heavy soldier class of sabotage, you need to be at the front of the fighting and as close as you can to make this weapon effective. Even so, its still very damaging but you won’t get the full damage at long distances. Employ if possible in defence positions especially those around blind corners in team games. Be warned this weapon can be countered by throwing explosive projectiles around corners to damage you through splash damage or to flush you out of hiding places.
[Hunting shotgun]
Wooden 2 chambered rifle. You’ll only use this weapon in the find for Kim Rowland.
/Single player advice\
This weapon isn’t bad at all. The range is better (although still a little on the short side) and you’re able to do a lot of damage to enemies. You don’t have to be too accurate with headshots, as this gun can be extremely powerful up close. But obviously, the longer range you use the weapon the less powerful and useful it gets. The 2 chambers means that you can fire 2 shots in quick succession before reloading. Whereas the pump action shotgun has a delay each time it’s fired. The bad news is that because it only has 2 chambers, you’ll reload very frequently which can be very frustrating. Therefore, not the weapons for assaults or long term fighting unless it’s defending in a fortified area and they’re relatively close.
/Multiplayer advice\
N/ A weapon is not used on this mode.
[Bazooka]
XIII’S own rocket launcher. Can be used for a wide range of purposes from taking out ground forces to helicopters. Has to be reloaded after every shot. Anyone caught close to the explosion will lose hearing for several seconds. Secondary function includes using the bazooka rocket as a club to hit someone over the head.
/Single player advice\
You should be more concerned with splash damage then the rocket hitting you directly. The Bazooka produces an unusually high splash damage radius for a fps and the damage is immense. You’ll need at least full armour just to survive being caught by the rockets splash damage. If you see someone firing a rocket, make sure you run quite far away from the explosion because of this (to the point of being excessive would be safe). The bazooka is best used against vehicles such as the apache helicopter boss as that is the only thing that can damage it. The bazooka isn’t something you’ll use often but when you do use it, its a requirement rather then preference. If you do feel like you want to use it, try aiming it at large groups of people and concentrate aiming it near their feet as to catch them in the splash damage rather then the rocket itself. When holding this weapon you’ll be slower at moving so don’t carry it everywhere you go.
/multiplayer advice\
This weapon is best used on large amounts of people or when accuracy isn’t an issue. Again aim it at their feet as to create splash damage rather then concentrate direct hits as the odds of them running straight into the rocket are very minimal. This weapon isn’t bad if used in the right areas. But most maps are tight so you might just use it just to stop someone chasing you.
[Fixed gun emplacement]
An SMG fixed on a tripod. Has no secondary function.
/Single player advice\
Not the most useful of weapons as once you’re fixed in to the gun emplacement, you can’t heal yourself unless you let go of the weapon and the enemy has a big tendency to damage you very badly when you’re in one. Granted, the speed you spray at them will wipe anyone being targeted clean, but with more then 2 coming at you at a time, this is a death trap. If you are confronted by a lot of people, you’re better off finding cover and shooting them one by one.
/Multiplayer advice\
N/A weapon is not used in this mode.
[SMG (m60)]
It’s a heavy machine gun. Can only be found as a pick up most of the time. Only 2 of the bosses will use this weapon. Settings include burst and auto, switch between them via secondary fire.
/Single payer advice\
An interesting weapon, It can get inaccurate over long distances in auto as it recoils upwards. Therefore this weapon is more suited for short to medium range shooting or when accuracy isn’t an issue as you fill them with bullets instead. If you need long range accuracy, switch to Burst mode to improve things. You’ll find that if you’re outnumbered, this weapon might be the choice to clearing large numbers of soldiers who might be densely packed together. Carrying this weapon will slow you down, therefore, move around with another weapon and resort to it when needed.
/Multiplayer advice\
For deathmatches, You should think very carefully before using it. For starters it isn’t the most accurate gun in the world and you move slower, so dodging is potentially difficult and making you an easy picking for other players. If you were carrying a rifle, use that first, as that’s more versatile. But if you’re in need of an alternative bursting weapon, this might be the solution. In Sabotage and capture the flag missions. This is useful as you can guard and defend areas quite effectively. Best used at choke points and blind corners.
I hope this walk through of weapons has helped you. Thanks for reading.
