PRO SKATER 4

This is a beast of a game possibly THE best gamecube game and by
far the best of the tony hawks series

In this guide I'll give you all the tips and knowledge of the
game that i have.

First Tip

As soon as you have enough money buy cheat six in the spend cash option. The cryptic clue will be "more your speed". this slows down the game speed making tricks easier to do in the "nail the tricks they call out" goal, it also helps in getting new specials.

Tip two

An addition to TONY HAWKS PRO SKATER 4 is that when you are doing a manual slash grind pressing different button combinations change the move you are doing. For instance you are doing a manual and you accidentally hit the B button twice, oh no you cry! but actually you have discovered another move. Some sort of flip-a-ma-jigger.
Being the bold person that you are you decide to try a different combination. i know, you think, i'll press X twice as if by magic the skater changes from a manual to a handstand. wondrous. In the next few hours you work out that if you press two different buttons eg B THEN X you do yet another move. shocking. Then as if all this wasn't enough you
find out that you do a different move if you press B first then X than when you press X first then B.
Now if you on the floor where you have collapsed in amazement then you will also find out that this works for grinds. No I'm not joking, and yes you should sit down before you fall over.

This next bit is only for the hardcore ones among us.
Gather yourself now, take some deep breaths, and relax. You can do the same for.....wait for it......wait for it......you can do the same for lip tricks... i tell ya this review has more cliff hangers than the grand canyon.

tip three
do not build you own skate park. this is the games only
weakness. the park fills up so quick most of thee park is just
open space. sure you can do smaller parks but.... well it just
aint the same.

tip four
if you have mastered the grind and manual switches the next is
air switches. yeah you heard if you press the X twice and a
direction you do a different move altogether. the same goes for
the flip tricks but you can do those three times.

tip five
a new feature of TONY HAWKS PRO SKATER 4 is that you now needn't
do the whole game with every player just one. HOWEVER if you
look each player has a pro challenge this is a challenge
specific to them and what they do in real life. for example bam
magera has a trolley ride in alcatraz and bob burnquist has to
do specials over a gap in a loop-the-loop. these are the best
parts of the game so make sure you do it for all the
characters.

tip five
when you are doing specials make sure you have these set to
up-down X/Y/B this way they are easier to do with the analogue
stick you can also use down-up and left-right / right-left thay
are all good

Tony Hawk’s has starred in so many skateboarding titles now it’s hard to keep track. But Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 has remained the most challenging on the set and I am here to help you with any queries you may have.

Skating Basics
--------------

Moving in straight lines, turning and ollieing are your simple abilities you must master. You need to be able to ollie onto areas, turn into half pipes and skate as fast as possible into a ramp. Easy enough to learn, but there are more complex things that need to be revised too.

Types Of Ollies
---------------

Ollie is you basic run of the mill jump in the air.
Nollie is an ollie only with your feet at the front of the board that gives you a few points.
Fakie Ollie is an ollie only you are riding the opposite way you normally would that gets you the most points of the three.

Types Of Moves
--------------

Grinds

Perhaps the most useful of moves. Ollie and land on a rail and simply make sure your balance meter doesn’t tilt too far to the left or right or else you’ll bail.

Grabs

These are best used on halfpipes. These basically give you more points the longer you hold them for. And if you turn while performing them then you’ll gain more points.

Flips

Can be used on halfpipes combined with grabs but best suited for street skating. Can range from simple and quick, to awkward and high scoring.

Lip Tricks

Get onto the lip or edge of a halfpipe or bowl and press Y and you’ll pull a trick that causes you to balance on there. Not bad if you have hardly enough speed to get in the air and good for stringing along combos.

Manuals

Must be used if you wish to get combos. Basically manuals involve you balancing on your front or back wheels while holding your balance. Not to be used alone but essential to get combos

Flat Land Tricks

Handstands, rusty side manuals are spectacular tricks similar to manuals, but higher scoring. Can be used instead of a manual but harder to perform. Use in a chain to gain combos.

Reverts

Simple yet effective. When returning to the halfpipe after having done a trick in the air, press R and you’ll turn on the spot continuing the combo.

Boneless, Fastplants, Beanplants, No Complys, Skitching and Wallrides

The first four are quick moves that add to your overall score of a move. Just before you leap off the halfpipe, press forwards once or twice and you’ll perform a one of the four above depending on the skater.. Simple yet effective. A Wallride is simply your skater ollieing and riding along the wall for a brief period of time. Cool for using in combos. Skitching isn’t advised but is cool looking all the same. This is where the skater gets a ride on the back of a vehicle. Pointless but fun.

Your Special Meter
------------------

This increases when you perform good moves. Get about 3000 points and it’ll become nearly full. When full you can perform a special move like Tony’s “900” or Bam’s “The Jackass” which add a lot of points to your overall score. Bail however and the meter will be empty. When full, your speed and ollie also are a little better so try to keep the meter full.

My Personal Tips For Beginning
------------------------------

If you’re new to the game or have played it for ages and just not very good at the game then look at my simple yet effective method of gaining moderately high scores.

PLAN A

Head over towards a halfpipe and ollie up it as high as possible. When in the air press the flip button and immediately after press and hold a the grab button while turning the analogue stick. This will cause you to perform a flip move followed by a grab move while turning 360-720 degrees which should get you around 10,000 points. Not too shabby. This works for a while but after a while of doing the same old tricks the points start to decrease so then move onto plan B.

PLAN B

Stand still and simply get into a manual. After this start tapping the B, X and Y buttons madly so you can perform flatland tricks. These aren’t difficult, but don’t do them for too long or else you’ll bail. After you’ve done a few and scores fail to increase dramatically go for the final plan.

PLAN C

Get your special meter up and head for a halfpipe or whatever you perform you move on. Do the trick and add a few more to it by maualling or other means. This should add a few 500,000 or so to your score. Tony Hawk’s “900” is worth around 11,000 alone so if you add a few new moves think of the high score you’ll rake in!

Getting Really High Scoring Combos
----------------------------------

When faced with a challenge that has the words “get” and the number “5,000,000” you know it’s going to be tough. But fear not as it looks harder than it actually is. Performing combos are essential to actually get anywhere near the million region and here are the best ways how to:

When skating get a full special meter and head over to the halfpipe. Then perform a high scoring special move like the “900” and revert as you land following this with a manual. This will keep the scoring going up. Then head for rails or ramps to again perform another move which will increase your score further. Keep going until you feel as if you may bail as actually falling on your face will result in the points simply disappearing. A waste of time!

If that doesn’t suit you then try simple performing a high scoring grinding move on a rail and then when jumping off perform a manual. From there on you can perform flatland tricks like handstands etc… to boost your score further, however you need to keep an eye on your balance meter.

When Being Awarded Stat Points
------------------------------

There are many areas to improve your skater upon, but which area is the best to improve first and what is not really necessary? Here’s what I think is the perfect order to improve your stats in:

1st Rail Balance (Makes life easier when doing combos using rails)
2nd Hangtime (Gives you more time in air to perform tricks)
3rd Spin (Spin quicker so higher scoring tricks can be pulled off)
4th Air (Gives you a boost in the air)
5th Manual Balance (Makes life easier for doing combos)
6th Flip Speed (Quicker flips make it less likely you’ll bail)
7th Ollie (Higher ollie means more time to do a trick)
8th Speed (Increasing speed means higher take off on ramps)
9th Lip Balance (Makes balancing easier on lips)
10th Switch (Means you can skate either way round on the board)

There you go. Tony Hawk may be a very difficult game to master, however use these tips to get you started and you’ll soon be pulling “900s” and “darkslides” in combos of over 1,000,000. Thanks for reading.
