Retro Game Walkthroughs for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (Gamecube)
Submitted By: many goats
Yo all! This walkthrough gives all challenges, gaps and minigames on the College level. I will be adding full walkthroughs for the other levels over time.

a- Things To Watch Out For
b- Challenges
c- Gaps
d- Minigames

a- THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR

-The large hole in the back of the clock tower.
-The footballers, who will punch you.
-Some VERY easy challenges.

b- CHALLENGES

1- Get A High Score Of 40,000 Points (Difficulty 1/5)

This is very easy really. Just use the ramps that Jamie has set up and try manualing to join some tricks together. 2 minutes is ample time even if this is the first challenge you do.

2- Collect The SKATE Letters (Difficulty 2/5)

A little harder this one. The “S” is on the railings outside the elementary school, just grind to get it. The “K” is up on the cables, and you can ollie off of the car park gate to get up there, then just grind along to it. The “A” is just outside the Frat Boys’ window, and you can get it either by using the plank outside and then ollieing out to it or using the ramp around the other side. The “T” is above the large ramp where the first challenge takes place, by the philosophers building. Just ollie up to it. When you reach the foot of the ramp again, you will be able to see the “E”, just spine transfer up the building in front of you and roll along to the final letter.

3- Collect The COMBO Letters In One Combo (Difficulty 1/5)

Easier than it sounds, this one. You will see the “C” as soon as you start. Simply follow the railing round, keep your balance and when there is a break for the bridge just ollie over to the “O” at the end. Remember to land the move though!

4- Race The Inline Skater (Difficulty 2/5)

The inline skate course is hard to get used to when you first check it out, but keep trying it and it gets easier and easier. This one is a case of practise makes perfect. Keep following the arrows and eventually you will see the final gate you need to go through, just inside the entrance to the car park.

5- Nail The Tricks They Yell Out (Difficulty 2/5)

This is easy due to the time limit that you are given, you don’t need anywhere near this much time. If you bail trying a trick, you can easily fit 2 into the next attempt to make up for it. The tricks are very simple and as long as you don’t get too far behind, you’ll be fine.

6- Get Back At The 5 Frat Boys (Difficulty 2/5)

The Frat Boys have trash-canned your mate! Lets kick some ass! 2 of them are on the large wall; you will need to wall ride, wallie and then grind to get them – keep your balance! The other 3 are easy – use the plank on the lorry to reach the Frat Boys’ window and you can get all 3 by just rolling through here and then ollieing or grinding to the final bloke.

7- Spine Transfer Over The Wall (Difficulty 0/5)

This is probably the easiest task on the game. Three spine transfers, one on its own, one with a Kickflip and one with an Indy. If using both the R and L buttons is to challenging for you, then just use Z, ok?

8- Warn The Other Skaters (Difficulty 2/5)

This is a hard challenge if you are unable to keep control of your board. There is no need to do tricks, just follow the arrow and go close to the people that it points to. The time limit is tight, but just hold down A to get that speed up and you’ll be fine. If this is too hard, do a different challenge and add a stat point to your speed, but it isn’t necessary.

9- Skitch The Professor’s Car (Difficulty 2/5)

This is tricky, but there is one distraction – the sound. Some people prefer to turn it down when completing the challenge first time (it’s a radio report about the kidnapped car with you, the “skateboarder” on the back) as it distracts you from trying to keep your balance. Just keep that arrow in the middle and it should be ok, although you have to skitch for a long time.

10- Grind Down Officer Tom’s Banners (Difficulty 1/5)

Remember when you had to wall ride, wallie and grind to get the Frat Boys earlier? Use the same technique to grind down the big red banners. There are 2 on one side, and 3 around the corner. Very easy if you know how to keep your balance.

11- Get A Pro Score Of 75,000 Points (Difficulty 3/5)

By this time you should be able to do reasonably decent tricks, and the way to roll in the points is to learn your special moves, as they are very useful for big points. Try and join a special air trick to a special flatland trick with a revert or something - 75,000 points is not many when you reach the later levels in the game.

12- Stop All Of The Pink Elephants (Difficulty 3/5)

Ollie is back and these elephants are scaring him to death! This challenge is hard if you cannot do combos, as the time limit is ridiculously tight. Get all of the elephants up to the final spine transfer needed however you like, but after that you need to manual and grind between the logs all the way down to the bottom, as the game wont fail you for going over the time limit as long as you are still in a combo. This will take a few goes, but it’s very satisfying when all the elephants are killed.

13- Medal The High Combo Competition (Difficulty 2/5)

You will need to get your special tricks licked to win this competition, and it is a shame you get the same prize money for gold, silver and bronze, but hey. The best way to do this is to do a cool air combo, revert and then grind round the rails and then back up the ramp - just repeat until you think you’ve done enough. About 75,000 points per attempt will guarantee a gold medal, and remember to get your combo going quickly, as you only have a few seconds to start one.

14- Nail A 360 Varial McTwist (Difficulty 1/5)

This is easy as you get loads of time to charge up your special meter, and you are told how to do the move. Just use the ramp that Tony set up for you and nail it. There isn’t a way to describe this really, just remember to hit the ramp straight so that you can land straight and so you don’t go off the edge of the ramp.

15- Clock 5 Jocks In One Combo (Difficulty 4/5)

Easily the hardest of the first 16 challenges available on this level, you will need balance and skill to complete this challenge. Firstly grind some of the rails and get as many of them as you can, then when you reach the end it gets tough. Manual off the end and if you have some speed and are going to end up in the air, be prepared to revert and manual back to the railings for a second pass. If you aren’t going into the air, you will need to manual round in a half circle and slowly make your way back to the railing. Keep going until you have hit 5 of them and then jump off as quickly as possible, as you won’t want to do this one again.

16- Gap The Floats 10 Times (Difficulty 1/5)

Too easy this one. Either spine transfer or boneless or beanplant or whatever you want (just push forwards if you want) between the floats. It is very slightly harder when they turn the corner (wow!) but you have enough time to wait for the parade to go around the corner and then carry on. This challenge is also one of the most boring on the game.

17- Combo On The Benches, Stairs And Flagpole (Difficulty 4/5)

This challenge is hard, as you don’t really know where you’re allowed to go. The best plan is to do a small grind combo on the bench in front of you to build up the special bar, then grind down the stairs and do a Darkslide or something around the flagpole, and just balance for a while. This is a lot more difficult than it sounds, as leaving any of these items for another will result in failure.

18- Get The 4 Masters Lip Gaps (Difficulty 3/5)

These are easy once you know where they are. To get the first one use the ramps by the side of the philosophers building to leap and do a lip trick on the philosophers building itself. You face one when you start the challenge anyway. The second one involves jumping up to where you found the “T” in the “Collect The SKATE Letters” and doing a lip trick on the highest point possible, which is one of the ramps on the roof. This is the “Fine Arts” lip. The third is called the “Engineers’ Lip” or something, and you need to do a lip trick on the highest point on the building where you found the “E” earlier, which is a purple banner. The final one is at the huge building in front of you if you are facing away from the philosophers building and is the “English Masters” gap or something, and you just need to use the ramp against the wall to reach the roof and do a lip trick there.

19- Get The COMBO Letters In The Pro Combo (Difficulty 4/5)

The hardest challenge on the whole level (yes, harder than either of the Pro Challenges) is this one. You need to wall ride and wallie to grind and get the “C”, and then will need to ollie off the wall onto the tennis court area at the right time to nab the “O” on the way down. You then need to manual, wall ride and wallie up to the wall on the other side of the corner. Then grind along to the “M” and keep ollieing every so often to increase speed and this also means that you don’t need to worry about balancing for a second or two. Keep going to the “B” and then you have a choice. There is a cable you can grind on, but it is quite hard to land on, so I found it easier to hop onto the top of the security hut, manual across it and then grind on the wall at the back and along to the “O”. It’s your call

20- Beat Bob’s 3 Best Combo’s (Difficulty 3/5)

This challenge is a pain, as you don’t get multiple attempts in the time limit for each combo that needs beating. Just use some combos of your own and hope that they build up enough point to beat Bob’s. It is in this challenge that you realise that the College is not the greatest level ever created for big points.

21- Get A Sick Score Of 250,000 Points (Difficulty 4/5)

You know how to do these! It is best to stay on the roof where Tony sets the challenge, as these ramps are probably the best this level has to offer. Link lots of specials with flatland tricks and reverts and eventually you will reach the target score.

c- GAPS

Gaps Worth 10 Points:

Plaza Jump- Grind down the side of the stairs by the clock tower and land in a grind around the flagpole.

Gaps Worth 25 Points:

Kioskhop- Grind from any object and ollie into a grind on one of the two blue kiosks. You can ollie between them too.

Log Hop- When going down the river, you will see loads of logs. Just grind one, ollie, then grind on the next one.

Rail Cross- In the coliseum area (where the footballers train) grind one rail and then switch to a grind on a rail on the opposite side.

Rail Hop- By the stairs where your buddy got trash-canned there are rails going down towards the road. Just grind, hop and grind between two of them.

Gaps Worth 50 Points:

Bachelors In Engineering Grind- Grind around the first railing up (by the lip of the quarter pipe) on the engineering building (the one with the purple banner).

Bachelors In FineArts Grind- Grind around the lip of the quarter pipe on the Fine Arts building (the glass one, the largest of all the buildings in this area).

Banner Gap- Grind down one of the banners during the appropriate challenge.

Bench To Bench- Up by the philosophy building you will see two sets of blue benches. Transfer a grind from one set to the other.

Class Transfer- By the primary school; use the ramp where you had to “nail the tricks they yell out” and transfer up one level to the building next to it, and next to the car park, or down from that building to the ramp.

Coliseum Transfer- At the two ends of the coliseum bit where the footballers train (the bit with the railings) there are ramps. Transfer from one of the ramps inside the coliseum to one outside, or vice versa.

Gateway Gap- Grind along one of the blue railings on the main wall around the level.

Grind Hop To The Fence- Transfer a grind from the tennis net onto the small fence on the basketball courts.

High Road Hop- Grind along one of the barriers that lets you into the large car park in the corner of the level, catapult yourself into the air and grind on the wire above.

Higher Learning- Transfer a grind from the blue railings outside the primary school to the front of the school itself.

Into The River- Using one of the two quarter pipes on either side, transfer into the quarter pipe in the river.

Nice Equipment- Once you are on the high rail you grinded on in the “High Road Hop” gap, transfer the grind over to one of the shops on your right. Then transfer this grind over to the next shop along.

Off The Lil Kicker- By the clock tower, there are two stair sets and three slopes going down towards the flagpole. Use the left-hand edge of the far left slope as a kicker, and you will get the gap.

Over The Stairs- Transfer over the small stair set by the basketball courts.

Schnitzels For All- Ollie off of the plank on the back of the pickup truck and grind on the red and white building ahead.

Skippin’ Over- Either transfer a grind between two ledges in the car park, or transfer one over the entrance to the wooden bridge (part of the first COMBO challenge).

Through The Frat Window Grinding- Using the ramp next to the coliseum, get air and grind on the keg ledge, through the gap to the right.

Through The Frat Window Manualing- Manual along the frat window and out of the other side, towards the coliseum.

Through The Frat Window Ollieing- Ollie through the gap where you grinded for the similar gap.

Gaps Worth 100 Points:

Bachelors In Engineering Lip- Do a lip trick on the first rail up on the engineering building.

Bachelors In Fine Arts Lip- Do a lip trick on the first lip of the fine arts building.

Masters In Engineering Grind- Grind on the highest rail (the edge of the roof) on the engineering building.

Masters In English Grind- Grind on the roof of the English building (the brown one near the centre of the level).

Masters In Fine Arts Grind- Grind on the roof of the fine arts building. There are some quarter pipes here that you may need to grind on, depending on where you took off.

Masters In Philosophy Grind- Grind on the roof of the philosophy building (the white one at the very top of the level).

On The Fence- Use the available quarter pipes to ollie into a grind on the big fence next to the tennis and basketball courts, NOT the small one in the middle.

Out Of The River- transfer from the quarter pipe at the end of the river to one of the two outside of it.

Gaps Worth 150 Points:

Masters In Engineering Lip- Do a lip trick on the roof of the engineering building.

Masters In English Lip- Do a lip trick on the roof of the English building.

Masters In Fine Arts Lip- Do a lip trick on the roof of the Fine Arts building.

Masters In Philosophy Lip- Do a lip trick on the roof of the Philosophy building.

Traffic Light Grind- Using the ramp on the left for the “Over The Stairs” gap, transfer over the blue iron railing (the “Gateway Gap”) and grind along the traffic lights on the other side.

Gaps Worth 200 Points:

Clock Tower Grind- Ollie up the stairs or grind the handrail to get up to the base of the clock tower. Go around the back and there you will find a large whole in the back of the tower. Ollie into it and you will appear in mid-air. Grind along the wire directly beneath you until you reach the English building.

Over The River- Transfer between the two quarter pipes on either side of the river.

Gaps Worth 500 Points:

Tony’s Pro Challenge Gap- Clear The Gap in Tony’s Pro Challenge.

d- MINIGAMES

Tennis

Talk to the bloke playing tennis to start the minigame. Unfortunately, this minigame is probably the worst part of the whole game. You have to play tennis against this bloke with your skateboard, and it seems to have a mind of its own, swinging randomly when you don’t even press A. Of course, when you do press A, it often doesn’t work anyway. Beat him at one game of tennis to get the cash.

Garbage Day

Near the Pickup truck with the plank on its back is a large garbage lorry. Spine transfer off the back of it to get inside and start the minigame. Two more lorries will appear next to the original one, and you must use the ramps inside them to grab the $50 notes hanging in the air up and down the street. It will take a few goes to get all of the cash, but it isn’t exactly difficult to do.

The Generators

To start this minigame you must find a small green box in front of the shops. There is a tiny ramp on the front of it. Use the ramp to get up and do a lip trick on the green box, and this will start a counter, showing the electrical charge. If you let it get to 100%, you will loose the challenge and blow the generators. The way to get the percentage back down is to grind on the cables, which by now will be sparking and flashing all over the place. Grinding on them takes the percentage back down, but if you end the grind, the counter will start to rise again. You must keep grinding and re-grinding until the counter is back at 0%.

when playing Rune Gliffbergs pro challenge on the alcatraz level me and many of my freinds where confused on how to complete it. i have recently figured out how to complete this challege fairly easily.

the challege can be found next to the two pools near the water tower. or simple select it by pauseing the game and selecting it from the list of goals on the level. firstly i advise you to drain the pool before starting the challenge as if you hit the water it wastes time respawning the skater. to drain the pool simply grind around the pools edge untill you hit a valve and the water will go out of the pool.

1, HEELFLIP HANDFLIP...
The first challege given is to get special a perform a HEELFLIP HANDFLIP while spine transfering over the pool, it will tell u what controls you press to perform this trick in the top right hand corner of the screen, but you can always change the controls by going to the edit trick menu (this can only be done when not playing a challege) to build your special meter up fast i always found doing a triple kickflip or heelflip while performing a 360 degree spin in mid air works really well (though this may depend on the skater your playing as)

2, BLUNT TO FAKIE...
You will be told to do a BLUNT TO FAKIE lip trick on the water tower railing this isnt so hard as you just have to perform the control for the trick given in the corner of the screen on the first ledge of the water tower.

3, MELON OVER PLANK...
The next trick is to perform a melon air trick over a plank of wood one of the kids is standing on. if you look towards the tall building directly oppersite the water tower you will see the plank, jump up the pool ramp at a slight angle a pull a MELON when going over it to complete this task.

4, EGGPLANT ON CELLBLOCK ROOF...
When you have jumped over the plank stay in the same pool and start jumping up the pool ramps, when you feel you have got enough speed and hieght perform a BONELESS up the ramp near the tall building by pressing (UP,UP JUMP) this will give you enough hieght to do the EGGPLANT lip trick on the very top of the cell block roof.

5, SPINE TRANSFER INTO WATER TOWER...
Spine transfer to the other pool and again start to build up height then spine transfer from the pool ramp into the water tower, you may need to do a boneless (UP,UP,JUMP) to spine into the tower as you have to spine over the wooden planks at the top of the tower.

6, 50,000 POINT COMBO...
When in side the tower you will be asked to do a 50,000 piont combo in side the water tower, the best way to get the pionts is by ethier linking together air tricks by reverting when you come back down the ramp and into another trick (you may need to revert then go into a manual to link the tricks together with out losing pionts) or by standing still and then going into a manual (UP,DOWN or DOWN,UP)and hiting different combonations of buttons to perform different tricks when in the manual untill you have enough pionts.

7, BACK FOOT FLIP NOSE GRAB...
When you have got the score do the controls for a BACK FOOT NOSE GRAB while spine transfering over the wooden planks at the top of the water tower back into the pool.

8,FINALE: ONE FOOT BLUNT ON GROMMET...
This is the challenge that confused me the most, it asks you to do a special trick ONE FOOT BLUNT on top of the grommet on the very top of the water tower, (i didnt know what a grommet was but it is actualy a young skater) if you look up towards the very top of the water tower you will see a kid holding a skateboard above his head, thats what you have to lip trick on. Alright heres the confuseing part, you cant actualy reach the grommet because hes too far up (not even with a boneless jump) doing a boneless will get you as far as the wooden planks on the top of the water tower.
Heres what you must do, aline your self up with the grommet then you have jump and lip trick on those planks of wood at the top of the tower by jumping up to it useing a boneless jump (UP,UP,JUMP) when you are on the planks you will see the grommet behind you (IMPORTANT: you must perform a lip trick with your skateboard, for example NOSEPICK or DISASTER because he cannot jump again from a lip by using hes hand, if you dont have any lip trick that use a skateboard to balance on the lip select some by going to edit tricks menu) you then have to jump up again and quickly hit the controls given to perform the ONE FOOT BLUNT trick on top of the skateboard, land the trick and you have completed the challege you are now free to check out the real Rune gliffberg in action, good luck.
