VIEWTIFUL JOE - GAMECUBE - BOSS WALKTHROUGH

It has to be said that Viewtiful Joe has both the most stylish and tough-to-beat bosses around; however much you may like them though, you'll need to beat them sooner or later. So here's a guide to defeat all the bosses without even breaking a sweat.

MINI-BOSSES
There are a lot of bosses you'll come across multiple times throughout Joe's adventure, so this first section should help you go through each one with ease.
BLACK THUNDER
This Helicopter is the first mini-boss you'll meet, but still just as hard as the rest. The main thing you have to watch out for is when it tries to spray you with bullets. As soon as you hear the bullets, get ready to jump onto it and begin smashing it to pieces. If you have Zoom and Mach Speed, use all three powers to knock Black Thunder to the ground and keep pummelling away until your VFX bar is almost completely used up.
Another attack you'll have to watch out for is when the Black Thunder drops enemies to get in your way. It's best just ignore these and focus on damaging the helicopter, but if you really need to get rid of them, dodge one attack then use Slow Motion to kill each one with a single blow.
You'll also have to watch out for the homing missiles that will be fired at you. The best technique when they're used is get as close to the Black Thunder as possible and use Slow Motion to deflect the missiles back towards it. Watch out because if you're not close enough they'll home in on the other, less important enemies.
Remember these points and you should beat it no problem.
JOKER
Probably the easiest of all the mini-bosses, but still tough if you don't know what to do. Because he has so many attacks, you have to beat him as quick as possible. To do this, the second he spawns run up to him and use both Slow Motion and Zoom, or just Slow Motion if you haven't yet got Zoom, and keep punching him. In no time all of his energy will be gone and he'll be no more. Until the next time you have to beat him, of course.
HARRIER
To beat this mini-boss, use exactly the same technique as you did for Black Thunder. While it is a little bit harder, no rotor blades mean you can hit it much easier without any worry of getting hit.
When you're using the Six Machine, though, things are a little different. Again, firing at the missiles will cause it damage, but that's about the only similarity to when you're playing as Joe only. If the Harrier begins to fire from above, you must use slow motion to dodge the bullets and quickly get above it. Once you have, keep Slow Motion activated and keep pressing kick to drop bombs onto the harrier below. Because you're in slow, the damage will be doubled and in no time it'll be nothing but rubble.
TANK/SPACE TANK
The main problem with this boss are the enemies. Not only do you have to defeat the tank itself, but the slew of enemies can damage you a fair bit. They're best avoided, but at some points you may need to defeat them, so dodge one attack then destroy the rest with one punch in Slow Motion.
The actual Tank is fairly simple. As soon as you hear a bullet being fired, change to Slow Motion then deflect it back at the Tank by punching it. Also, if you stay in Slow Motion until impact, more damage will be caused. If the Tank it aims upwards, jump over it, otherwise it'll charge you down and cause a great deal of damage.

CHAPTER 1 - JOE THE HERO

BOSS - CHARLES THE THIRD

ATTACK 1 - ROCK FALL
An attack that Charles’ uses a fair amount in his battle consists of him driving up through the ceiling, causing sharp rocks to pierce the ground and, if you’re not careful, you too. The best way to avoid this is, just as the rocks are in mid-air, activate Slow Motion to dodge them easily. Not only does this stop you getting hurt, but it also opens up Charles the Third up for attack. Jump up towards him, activate Slow Motion again and kick him. Once you’ve done this he’ll explode into loads of mini-bats. Straight away, jump up again, hold L for Slow and try to punch and kick as many bats as you can to drain is life.
ATTACK 2 - RED BLADES
Probably the hardest to avoid of all his attacks, Charles will throw swirling, red blades towards you. The best way to avoid them, and use them to your advantage, is to go to the very right of room (the area which you should base yourself for the entire battle) and wait for blades to get close to the wall. Once they are you can jump straight through the middle of them, using Slow Motion just in case you get hit, and Charles should be waiting above them ready for you to hit. Use the same technique as before, only this time the blades will dispose of bats as well as you.
ATTACK 3 - NOSE DIVE
Occasionally throughout the battle Charles will perform his nosedive attack, in which he swoops across the ground at a very high speed. The best place to avoid this attack is, again, at the far right of the room near Charles’ coffin. As he’s in the air, he’ll flash red then dart to the ground, normally flying off to the left. As soon as he makes a noise, activate slow motion so you can hit him when he comes darting towards you, which will knock him out. Now’s your chance to make real damage. Use Slow Motion and Mach Speed, then hold down the punch button to give him a good seeing to. This will take off a lot of energy and easily the best chance to attack him in the entire battle.
When Charles isn’t doing any particular attack, try to kick him as much as possible, in exactly the same way you would after his rock attack. In no time he’ll be lying on the floor, beaten.

CHAPTER 2 - SOME LIKE IT RED HOT

BOSS - HULK DAVIDSON
ATTACK 1 - BUTT BASH
Hulk will do this throughout the whole of battle and while not too dangerous, will drain your life gauge if you’re not careful. The attack consists of him jumping around the room, trying to land or you or catch you with a tremor. The tremor isn’t very big and will only damage you if you’re very close, but, again, it will hurt you a lot. The best idea is to make sure you can see him at all times and jump when he lands. In order to hurt Hulk, you must wait until he’s landed then hold L and begin pummelling his axe. Soon enough it’ll break, leaving him vulnerable, so Zoom in, activate Slow Motion and then Mach Speed and hold punch to really hurt him. It’s best to stop just before your VFX bar is completely drained so you don’t revert to regular Joe.
ATTACK 2 - CHARGE
If you’re punching Hulk while he has his axe he’ll try to attack you with two different moves; first of all is a basic swing of his axe, in which three skulls will flash up before he tries to get you. This can be easily dodged by activating Slow Motion and jumping, so it shouldn’t be a problem. His other attack is very hard to dodge though; one single skull will appear and he’ll slam his axe down on the ground, releasing flames all over the room. Instead of trying to dodge this, hold L for Slow and the attack will only reduce your VFX gauge instead of your energy. Flames will still fill the arena, but now you won’t be hurt at all. Once you’ve dodged his attack, run away from Hulk to the edge of the room (use Mach Speed to get there if you catch on fire), then jump up onto the platform directly above you. Hulk will charge into the wall and get dizzy, opening him up for a barrage of punches. Use all VFX powers and hold punch to deplete his energy bar.
ATTACK 3 - AXE THROW
Probably the most dangerous of all Hulk’s attacks is the Axe Throw. If the camera pans out and he throws his axe, get into the closest corner of the room and use Slow Motion if the axe gets to close. If it flies by you once, use Mach Speed to run towards Hulk, Zoom in and activate Slow Motion, then begin plugging away at him. This is another great chance to get rid of his life and damages him a great deal.
ATTACK 4 - MISSILES
In Hulk’s only other attack, a rack in the background of the room is raised and missiles begin spewing out, homing in on you. Use Slow Motion and kick or punch them to revert them towards Hulk. Keep doing this and soon enough his axe will be destroyed. At this point, run towards him, activate all VFX moves and begin attacking him.
If you use all these techniques effectively, he’ll be gone in no time.

CHAPTER 3 - 4,000,000 LEAGUES BELOW THE SEA

BOSS - GRAN BRUCE
ATTACK 1 - ITEM SPIT
When Gran Bruce first enters the arena, he will try to spit a number of items at you (including a GameCube!), so at the very start run towards him, activate all VFX moves and hold punch to begin damaging him. After a while he’ll stop the attack, and won’t do it anymore throughout the battle.
ATTACK 2 - CHOMP
This is Gran Bruce’s premier attack and causes a lot of damage if he gets hold of you. He’ll start to chomp away and go after you, so keep jumping over him until he stops to get a breath. At this point use all your Viewtiful moves and hold down punch to damage him. Once you’ve done this, if you’ve damaged him enough, he’ll retreat to the pool in the middle of the arena to get some energy back. Use Mach Speed to run towards him and when he stops, activate all VFX and begin punching again. Once he finishes, he will fill up the entire arena with water and place mines around the whole screen. When Gran starts to chomp again, try to make him run into a mine, causing him to stop. Again, using all VFX, start punching and the mine will explode, draining almost half of his energy gauge in the process. If he does manage to get you in his teeth, swirl the 3D stick around to break loose
ATTACK 3 - PIRANHA
At certain points in the battle, Gran will set some piranhas on you. The best way to get rid of them is to use Slow Motion then kick them. If they do manage to get hold of you, in the same way you do if Gran gets you, swirl the 3D stick around to fend them off.
Being the easiest boss in the game, you should have no problem beating him and after two successful attacks he should be gone.

CHAPTER 4 - THE VIEWTIFUL ESCAPE

BOSS - ANOTHER JOE
ATTACK 1 - BASIC ATTACKS
From the start Joe will try to hurt you with basic punch and kick attacks which, while simple, can cause a fair bit of damage. The best idea is to get close up to him, then use all VFX moves and hold punch. After a while he’ll try to attack you, at this point just stay in Slow Motion so he doesn’t damage you. After this he should start running away. Don’t let him get away and whenever he says either “Henshin Ago-go” or “Come On Six Machine”, hit him as quickly as possible, then use all your VFX and begin another attack. Just don’t let him out of your sight and you should be fine.
ATTACK 2 - MINI-JOE’S
If Joe manages to say “Henshin Ago-go”, he’ll release a number of mini-Joe’s, which home in on you. The best way to avoid this attack is to use Mach Speed and run towards where you first start the boss, so you can see where your foes are coming from, then use Slow Motion to punch and destroy any that come nearby. If the mini-Joe’s don’t start circling you, try to destroy as many as possible while they’re static, and you’ll luckily uncover Joe himself.
ATTACK 3 - SIX MACHINE
The first of the Six Machine’s attacks are fairly simple; in a similar fashion to the green, flying foes littered around each level, the Six Machine will drop easily-avoided bombs at you. If you’ve got full health, it’s best to just ignore it, but if you’re low, jump up towards it, hold L and begin attacking it until it drops to the ground. Keep punching it and a Burger will soon appear, replenishing one vital heart piece. The second attack is a little tougher; the Six Machine will fire sets of two bullets around the entire arena. The main problem this causes is that you can’t use Slow Motion, otherwise the bullets power will increase and damage you further. It’s best to try and get behind it, then just hit it with normal punches and kicks.
As long as you stay with Joe and don’t let him get away, you’ll have no problems. But this is a very tough boss, so perhaps you’ll need a Take 2 to complete him.

CHAPTER 5 - MIDNIGHT THUNDER BOY

BOSS - ALESTOR
ATTACK 1 - DASH
From the off, Alestor will dash towards you from high above. This is a fairly simple attack to dodge (jumping does the job easily), but opens him wide up for attack. Using all VFX, begin to beat him to a pulp and if you hit him towards the pool or somewhere else, follow him and begin attacking once again. Also, if you can, try to hit him towards the lava; if you use Slow Motion when he falls into it he’ll be damaged a huge amount.
ATTACK 2 - HOMING SWORDS
Probably the most destructive of all Alestor’s attacks is the homing sword technique. Alestor will stop in mid-air at certain points in the battle and begin to fire swords towards you To avoid them, simply stay in one place and use uppercuts if they get too close; this will deflect the swords back towards Alestor, thus hurting him. The only thing you have to watch out for are the ever-moving electrified pillars. To stop them, simply jump up towards them and either punch or kick them.
ATTACK 3 - AIR BLAST
Alestor’s only other attack consists of him floating in the air, and just after muttering “Air Blast”, firing a purple, electric blast towards you. The best way to avoid this attack is to jump away from him soon as you hear him. If you’re near the centre of the arena, jump onto the platform and try to punch him to the ground. If you’re successful, he’ll fall to the floor and give you an opportunity to destroy him. Use all VFX and hold punch to get rid of his health gauge.
As long as you don’t let him attack too much, you should beat Alestor easily.

CHAPTER 6 - THE MAGNIFICENT FIVE

BOSS 1 - GUARD STATUES
This section is simply the first four bosses in a row, which must be beaten without losing any lives. Just use the same techniques you used in previous battles and you should fly through. There are a few things that should be purchased first, though; the VFX Turbo Charger is essential, because your VFX gauge won’t be as high as it was when you first battled these bosses, you’ll be turning into regular Joe a lot more often. Also, if you’re finding it too tough a Take 2 should do the job, making things just that little bit easier.

BOSS 2 - FIRE LEO
ATTACK 1 - BOULDER THROW
The most simple of Leo’s three attacks is the boulder throw. At the very start he’ll dart around the arena, dropping boulders behind him; because they can damage you a lot, dodging them is essential. As Leo runs past, jump over him as use Slow Motion just in case one of the boulders hit you. As soon as you land, use Mach Speed to run over to the closest boulder, and then when the next one drops, use Mach Speed to run up to it and hold down punch until you set alight.
ATTACK 2 - FIREBALLS
Leo’s second attack is probably the most damaging of all. Once you’ve set on fire, run right up close to Leo; because you’re on fire the fireballs won’t damage you in any way. Start by activating all VFX moves and holding down punch, stopping to dodge any attacks he may attempt to hit you with. Once his shield shatters, jump away from him and wait for all the fireballs to disappear before attacking again. Once they have, use all VFX again and keep punching and dodging his attacks when needed.
ATTACK 3 - SPIN
After you’ve beaten him up a bit, he’ll begin to spin away, trying to swipe at you. There’s no way to hurt him when he’s in this state, so just run away and jump over the first opening in the arena you come across to stop his attack. After this he’ll fall into the lava and then jump out again; make sure to use Mach Speed to run away if he’s too close, because he’ll inflict a huge amount of damage if he gets you.
Follow these instructions and you should beat Leo after a few goes, but you’ll probably need a Take 2, as well.

CHAPTER 7 - JOE AND SILVIA

BOSS - KING BLUE
ATTACK 1 - LIGHTNING BLAST
King Blue will start off his attack by trying to strike you down with blue lightning. It’s best to just stay still, and if there’s a lot of space without any lightning, use Mach Speed to run as close as you can up to the nearest lightning bolt. After you’ve fought him a few times, you should know exactly each lightning rod will strike, so you won’t have to risk getting hurt, you’ll just know where to be. King Blue will also try to hurt you with a huge lightning conductor he lowers from above the screen. At this point he is vulnerable, so jump up alongside him and use all VFX to begin pummelling him. Don’t worry if you don’t know he’s lowering the conductor; a whole barrage of ships from space will race towards, so you’ll know when to hit him. Try not to batter away too long, though, or the conductor will hurt you. Instead drop down and duck after a certain amount of time to stop being hurt by the blast.
ATTACK 2 - ROCKETS
King Blue’s only other attack consists of 4 huge rockets being fired at you. You’ll have to use Slow Motion to hit them away, and if you stay in Slow, they’ll hit a nearby planet and the blast will hurt King Blue. The biggest problem with this attack is the lightning; with there being lightning so close, it’s easy to make a mistake.
As long as you keep at it, and learn exactly where the lightning strikes, you’ll beat King Blue easily. He is one of the toughest bosses you’ll come across, but not unbeatable.

FINAL BOSS - CAPTAIN BLUE
In this battle you’ll have to fight your way through a classic Captain Blue battle after being damaged by King Blue. Your best bet would be to use all of your VFX and punch Captain Blue as much as possible. If he tries to run towards you, jump over his head and begin plugging away at him, and whenever he gets close try to do the same. The only attack you really have to watch out for is when he’s in mid-air; don’t stay too close to him otherwise he’ll strike you with a lightning attack. He’ll also leave huge bolts around the room, which can cause a lot of damage. You should beat him fairly easily though, and if you have enough energy from the King Blue battle, and perhaps a Take 2, you should zoom through it.

Well there you have it, you’ve completed Viewtiful Joe, one of hardest titles to date. Plus, your hard work hasn’t gone unrewarded; you’ll get a few tasty extras too, giving you enough incentive to play through this amazing game just one more time.
