Retro Game Walkthroughs for Medal of Honour: Allied Assault (PC Games)

Weapons

You'll need to get to grips with all of the weapons in the game, be they Allied or Axis. Here's the manual's description of each weapon, as well as personal comments and a rating. Don't forget, just because the bazooka is powerful, that doesn't mean it's the best gun. So this tells you how good a weapon is, in terms of usefulness and ammo as well as power.

The number is what key to press to scroll through the weapon type

Pistols - #1 - Colt, Walther and silenced pistol

Rifles - #2 - M1 Garand, Springfield sniper rifle, Mauser and KAR 98 sniper rifle

SMGs (sub machine guns) - #3 - Thompson (tommy) and MP40

Machine Guns - #4 - Bar, STG44

Grenades - #5 - Frag, Stielhandgrenate

Other - #6 - Bazooka, Panzerschreck and Winchester shotgun

Colt 45

Clip - 7
Max Ammo - 200

When the opposition gets close, close your hand on your Colt 45. Reliable and accurate, the Colt 45 is the finest American military sidearm ever made. Each of seven rounds in your clip can deliver lethal force against well-protected opposition. The kick is heavy.

Opinion -

Well pistols in this game are rather weak, but head shots from this are fatal. The pistol whip is a great feature, but it comes with all the handguns. More power than the German Walther, but also one less bullet in the clip. In multiplayer, it's great for when your primary weapon is the slow firing sniper rifle or bazooka, or when you're out of ammo.

Silenced Pistol

Clip - 8
Max Ammo - 200

The Hi-Standard Model H-D is the OSS choice for suppressed pistols behind enemy lines. The weapon is quite accurate, easy to maintain and, most importantly, quiet. An excellent performer under pressure.

Opinion -

A very deadly weapon, but the slow rate of fire means you have to be accurate with a shot unless you want to end up going home in a box. The silencer means you can take care of guards without the entire base coming along to investigate. The pistol whip saves ammo. Not available in multiplayer (not much use for a silencer in death match)

Walther P38

Clip - 8
Max Ammo - 200

The lean P38 semi-automatic pistol is a weapon for the long haul. Its reliable firing mechanism makes it a favourite among officers of the Wehrmacht.

Opinion -

A nice rate of fire, one extra bullet than the American equivalent, but slightly less stopping power. Not a whole lot of difference. In multiplayer, it's great for when your primary weapon is the slow firing sniper rifle or bazooka, or when you're out of ammo.

M1 Garand

Clip - 8
Max Ammo - 200

Popular for its calibre, muzzle velocity and semi-automatic capabilities, the Garand has proven to be superior over earlier, bolt-action rifles. However, its eight round clip is difficult to reload when partially used; in the field, soldiers tend to
fire off all eight rounds before loading a fresh clip. When automatically emptying a spent clip, the M1 Garand emits a distinct 'ping' sound.

Opinion -

I'm not a fan of the Garand. Sure, you can empty 8 rounds in a very short time, but that doesn't mean anything when it's as weak as this. Only being able to reload when you've fired all 8 shots is a huge drawback, and you'll have to waste ammo emptying the clip yourself so you're ready for the next group of enemy soldiers. Aim for the head, it's the quickest way to put people down. Use only when you're out of SMG ammo or the target is at a distance and you don't have the sniper rifle.

Springfield 03 Sniper Rifle

Clip - 5
Max Ammo - 200

The internal magazine used in the Springfield 1903 sniper rifle is only five rounds, so snipers often use Colt 45s as sidearms. Because the position of the scope significantly obstructs the clip feed, rounds have to be inserted one at a time. This accurate weapon does expose you to return fire. Make your first shot count.

Opinion -

Great for picking off targets from a distance, but the small clip and long reload time is a drawback. Obviously not for use in close combat. In multiplayer, find a spot to hide and wait for unsuspecting players to come into your sight. One headshot will put anyone down.

Mauser KAR 98K

Clip - 5
Max Ammo - 200

This repeating rifle with a blunted nose is in the hands of all German soldiers for basic training. For many it is their
only weapon in combat yet is useful in most situations.

Opinion -

More powerful than the M1 Garand, but that is the only good feature. Imagine a sniper rifle but without the scope. Only 5 rounds, and you have to bolt it each time you fire. Deadly in the German hands, not much point in using it, even in multiplayer.

KAR 98 Sniper Rifle

Clip - 5
Max Ammo - 200

Adding a ZF41 2.5x Scope or a ZF42 5x scope to the KAR 98K turns it into an effective sniping weapon. In dense areas of Western Europe, snipers are a persistent threat.

Opinion -

No noticeable difference from the American Springfield, except for the crosshair, which is slightly less accurate (barely noticeable) Again, great in multiplayer

Thompson SMG

Clip - 30
Max Ammo - 300

Although many complain about the weight of the Tommy gun, it performs as designed: a rapid-firing sweep-and-clear weapon for close quarters. Its 30-round clip can be emptied in less than three seconds.

Opinion -

It takes a little longer than three seconds to empty, but it still has a very high rate of fire. Two bullets less than the German MP40, and heavier, which means you run slower with it. Slightly more powerful than the German MP40.

MP 40 SMG

Clip - 32
Max Ammo - 300

A simple technical innovation to the hammer eliminated the problems of the MP38, and the MP40 was born. Effective in close combat and clean in construction, the MP40 is very cheap to make, as its parts are machine-stamped.

Opinion -

A personal favourite of mine, a great weapon if you don't have the tommy (you can't have both in single player, and you can't drop the tommy) A high rate of fire, nice stopping power, and great in short bursts (though not as good as the tommy) The extra two bullets in the clip come in handy, and this is my weapon on choice in single and multiplayer.

Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR)

Clip - 20
Max Ammo - 500

Unloaded, the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) is a load. Loaded and ready to fire, it is worth its weight. Use it as a "base of fire" weapon to cover advancing troops. Has a 20 round clip.

Opinion - You don't get much opportunity to use this in single player, but usually a member of your team will be packing one. It's heavy, so it slows you down, and it runs through its tiny clip very quickly. It's only saving grace is it's extra power, but the tommy gun is just as good in single player. In multiplayer, again you're better off with the tommy.

StG44 Sturmgewhr

Clip - 30
Max Ammo - 500

Tests among German engineers have shown that their standard rifle cartridges are too long and too difficult to target in fully automatic weapons, so the StG44 Sturmgewehr fires a shorter cartridge. In meeting Hitler's demands for increased production of submachine guns and light machine guns, the StG44 is considered a resounding achievement of technology and production.

Opinion - You don't get to use this gun until near the end of single player, but you'll be glad when you get it. Lighter than the BAR, and with 10 extra rounds, this is an amazing gun, and a favourite on multiplayer. It goes through the clip quickly, but if you fire in short controlled bursts, you'll be OK

Mark 2 Frag Grenade

Max Ammo - 6

The lethal range of this hand grenade is 50 yards, so when you throw a Mark II grenade, duck and stay down until it has detonated. Two grenades are standard-issue for each GI.

Opinion -

Can't be thrown as far as the German equivalent, but since it's a frag grenade, it has a greater range when it explodes, sending shrapnel everywhere.

Stielhandgrenate

Max Ammo - 6

A well-designed grenade delivers two lethal weapons: the concussive force of the explosion and the fragments of the
grenade shell. The Stielhandgrenate, or "Stick Hand Grenade" in German, can be thrown considerable distances because of its shape. However, it is not an effective fragmentation weapon.

Opinion -

Can be thrown a fair bit further, but has a shorter range when it goes off. I prefer these to the Frags though.

Bazooka

Clip - 1
Max Ammo - 6

A simple weapon, the bazooka propels a rocket-mounted three- pound grenade in the direction where the tube is pointed. Early models required two soldiers to operate, one to fire and one to load. And, they were often dangerous. However, design flaws have been eliminated, and the bazooka has become an effective field weapon.

Opinion - Not much call for this in the single player, but it will come in handy when you finally encounter enemy vehicles (first one is on the demo level) This weapon annoys the heck out of everyone who doesn't use it on multiplayer, as it's seen as a "newbie gun" If you want to get kills that actually require skill, stay away from the bazooka.

Panzesrchreck

Clip - 1
Max Ammo - 6

The larger cousin to the grenade-launching Panzerfaust, the Panzerschreck propels a rocket-powered grenade from a shoulder held tube. A rough shield with a small opening for aiming provides the operator with some protection from the exhaust blast of the rocket.

Opinion - Not much difference from the American bazooka, but the shield is a welcome addition. Again, it's hated in multiplayer.

Winchester shotgun

Clip - 5
Max Ammo - 50

Originally designed as a police weapon, the Winchester Shotgun packs a short, solid punch. This solid-framed, pump action shotgun houses a 20-inch barrel that creates a wide dispersal pattern in the vicinity of the shooter.

Opinion - Only available towards the end at during one mission where you have to destroy some tanks. Comes in handy, but only having 5 shots is very annoying and really hampers the guns performance. Packs quite a punch, but lacks range. Hated in multiplayer, because it unbalances the game. Avoid if you don't want to be branded a newbie.

M1919A4 .30 cal Mounted Machine Gun (Allies)

While earlier water-cooled versions were noted for their higher rates of sustained fire and accuracy, the air-cooled
M1919A4 has become preferred on the front lines. Some are mounted on U.S. Army Jeeps for armed patrols.

Opinion -

To my knowledge, you only get to use this once, on the jeep level with Jack the SAS operative. It packs a punch, doesn't need reloading and has a very high rate of fire. Cuts men down from a long distance.

MG42 Mounted Machine Gun (Axis)

A unique, delayed blowback firing system allows the gun to achieve rates of fire three times greater than any American
machine gun. MG42s are used extensively in cover and defensive situations throughout the European theatre.

Opinion -

These are scattered all over the game, usually when you find one, an event is triggered so a lot of Germans suddenly appear. So use it, and don't stop shooting until nothing is left moving. Available in multiplayer, but you're a sitting duck while using it, so only do it when you have several obvious targets. Use it to kill the people you can see, then get the heck out of there before you're sniped/blown away with a rocket.

Items

The items in the game come in handy again and again, especially the health packs which are scattered around and are left by German soldiers.

Health -

Pick up these items when your health is low and you'll regain some, if not all. Here are the different types of health packs.

Canteen -

This bottle of water has the red cross sign on it, and restores 25% of your health. My friend thinks it may be whiskey and not water, ha ha. Well it's certainly SOMETHING that gets you going!

First Aid Kit -

Looks like a small white box, again with the red cross on it. Gives you 50% of your lost health.

Field Surgeon Pack

Looks like a huge first aid kit and it will generously restore your health back to 100% no matter how low it was.

Ammo -

Each type of ammo works for a different type of gun, and they come in different shapes and sizes.

Pistol Ammo - For the Colt, silenced pistol and Walther. Comes in pistols and small red boxes.

Rifle Ammo - For the M1 Garand, Springfield 03 and KAR 98K. Comes in rifles mostly.

Sub Machine Gun Ammo - For the Thompson and MP40. Comes in SMGs and tall green boxes.

Machine Gun Ammo - For the BAR and StG44.

Rockets - For the Panzerschreck or Bazooka, come in boxes or loose rockets lying around.

Grenades - You may find some laying around, or if you shoot someone before he pulls the pin, but they mostly come in crates.

Other items -

Time bombs - Attach these to whatever needs blowing up. Get away before the timer reaches zero, and you've just made something extinct. You'll be using these a lot in the game.

Radio bombs - You'll use these when timed bombs just won't do. Great for rigging several tanks etc, then blowing them all at the same time. Sadly, you don't have control of when they blow.

Wire cutters - Use these to cut the wires of trucks. Not used very often.

Radio - Used throughout the game, you receive orders from this during gameplay.

Papers - Perfect for getting away with being disguised as a German officer, flash these to any guards who ask. However, you may need to upgrade your papers (by stealing some more) to a higher level to get access to certain areas.

Binoculars - Press 7 to use the binoculars. Although the sniper scope is just as good, if you don't have the rifle, then use these. You can use them to call airstrikes or artillary when told to do so, just took at the target through these and click the mouse.
