Retro Game Walkthroughs for Super Smash Bros Melee (Gamecube)

This is a guide for getting two of the hardest to get trophies in the game. Giga Bowser and Crazy Hand in Adventure mode. For Giga Bowser you should play through on normal difficulty and for Crazy Hand you should go through on hard mode. For both, you cannot use a continue so set your stock to five before you start. It is written for Pikachu and only gives the best methods for cheap wins in each stage and strategies that I have found useful. At some points I will mention the jump and thunder technique. This involves jumping and using thunder at the height of the jump before you land. It refers to a single jump, not a double jump. Let’s get started then:

Stage 1 - Mushroom Kingdom

Part 1: - This is pretty simple and if you lose a life here you should just restart. Don't bother trying to kill the goombas and the koopas but do try to dodge them because they can cause a fair amount of damage. When you reach the Yoshis around half way through, you should continuously use thunder and they'll die and you'll have around 25% damage. From here just simply make your way to the end just a few metres away. If you’re playing on hard then you should waste a few minutes of time before going across the finish line; you’ll see why later.
Note: If the clock has a 2 in the seconds section when you reach the end, e.g. 5 minutes, 32 seconds, 56 hundreds of a second, then you'll face Luigi in the next level, anything else and you'll fight Mario. I recommend getting Luigi.
Part 2: - This is one of the hardest fights (especially on hard) so you can allow yourself to lose a life here. You'll either be playing Mario and Peach or Luigi and Peach. If you took my advice and you fight Luigi then there's a good chance that he'll commit suicide. The main method for this stage though would be to jump back and fourth over the centre turret of the castle and use thunder as you do. Every now and then use the up and A smash attack. This should kill them after a few attempts. Good items appear fairly regularly so use them to your advantage.

Stage 2 - DK Jungle

Part 1: - This is an easy fight against two mini Donkey Kongs. At the beginning jump up and the two DKs will move into your original spot. As you're about to land use thunder to knock them away. If you happen to miss, repeat jumping and using thunder until both are hit. Now use the across and A smash attack on each of them to hopefully finish them off. If one, or both, survive then repeat using the smash attack.
Part 2: - Another easy fight, this time against a single giant DK. Jump into the centre of the stage and use thunder straight away. From here on in use the jump and thunder technique used previously until DK reaches around 150% damage at which point you should use a smash attack. DK does commit suicide fairly frequently.

Stage 3 - Underground Maze

Part 1: - Another very easy level. There are six different battle rooms to find (there not exactly hidden, don’t worry) and five of them contain master swords and one of them contains the triforce. DO NOT TREAD ON THE FLOOR OF THE ROOMS WITH THE MASTER SWORD IN THEM. Trust me, it’s not a good idea, you’ll be forced to fight link and there’s a good chance you’ll die. Make your way to the triforce room but if your playing on hard mode (and only on hard mode) waste a minute or two wondering round before you enter. If you come across a room with a master sword, Pikachu is perfectly capable of jumping across and over the room.
Part 2: - This can be a tricky battle. It’s you against Zelda one on one. You really should aim to get through this stage with all your lives left so I’d recommend restarting if you do lose a life. The strategy for normal and hard mode is pretty much the same. Get yourself into position under the temple ruins (where you start) and wait for Zelda to come towards you. Zelda should walk towards you so get a forward A smash attack charged and hit her. Run towards the left of the screen and use thunder when Zelda jumps back towards you. If you hit her straight up use the up A smash attack as she comes back down. Run back towards the right and pick up any useful items. If there’s nothing worth using then wait for the opportunity to use one of your smash attacks. If you knock Zelda high into the sky, use thunder and she’ll be knocked off.

Stage 4 – Brinstar

Part 1: - You against Samus. Another level that can be dangerous but you really should aim to get through without losing a life. Jump up on to the highest platform and use thunder. From here on, use the jump and thunder technique until samus reaches around 70%. Then, you will be able to use your down A smash attack, followed by either up or across A smash attack to finish her off.
Part 2: - This level is a joke. You have to jump up to the top in the allotted time. If you can’t do this, stop playing the game, stop playing all games for that matter. I shouldn’t have to explain this because it’s so self-explanatory.

Stage 5 – Dreamland

Part 1: - Pikachu vs. Kirby. Easy. Jump towards Kirby and use thunder. He’ll slowly jump back towards you so use it again, and again, and so on. Repeat until dead.
Part 2: - Team Kirby. You have to defeat a group of 25 Kirbys, one for each character in the game. They are very weak so one blast of thunder can kill around four at a time. BUT, spend over 30 seconds doing this or you’ll also have to face giant Kirby who is amazingly difficult. Anyway, this level shouldn’t cause you much trouble as long as you use thunder on groups of Kirbys to get rid of more at once.
Part 3: - This is for the fools that ended up beating the Kirby team in less than 30 seconds. There isn’t really a strategy for this because Giant Kirby is just so difficult. You will lose a life here. Just use your most powerful moves and pray.

Stage 6 – Corneria

Part 1: - A fight against Fox McCloud that is generally quite easy. Fox will run to one of the ends of the ship. Don’t go right next to him but get close enough to be able to use your forward A smash attack. Fox will run to the other end but you’re Pikachu, you’re fast, jump over him and use thunder as you go. Repeat until dead. Fox may shoot you occasionally but if you dodge his attacks the pattern will be resumed.
Part 2: - You will either be against Fox or Falco, it’s completely random. This fight is different to the previous one though, many, many Arwings will come to the aid of Fox/Falco but the lasers can hit them as well and to be honest the lasers will be your best friends. You should be smart enough to dodge the lasers, the computer isn’t. When the computer gets knocked high into the sky, use thunder as a finishing shot.

Stage 7 – Pokémon Team

There is only one part to this stage. Yay! It is hard though. You might lose a life but that’s OK. You play against a team of 25 Pikachus, Pichus and Jigglypuffs. They are fairly weak so one thunder blast will probably kill them. At your aid though are lots of pokéballs. On normal mode, the Pokémon probably won’t pick up the pokéballs but on hard they will, so be fast. Basically, you should use a mix of thunder and pokéballs, primarily pokéballs.

Stage 8 – F-zero Grand Prix

Part 1: - Another very easy level but savour it, they get hard after this. All you have to do is run to the end of the Grand Prix track by running and jumping and dodging cars by jumping onto platforms above the tracks. It’s the same on all difficulties. On hard, waste a bit of time by standing idly on platforms for a while. You really shouldn’t lose a life here but the first time I completed this on normal mode, I confess that I did manage to miss time a jump and plummet to my death.
Part 2: - Single battle against Captain Falcon. This is the first really hard fight and you are pretty much guaranteed to die here on hard mode. At the beginning, wait for him to walk towards you and smash him. Then jump towards him and use thunder twice. Wait for him to jump towards you again and use a smash attack again. Use any items that appear and hit him again with thunder. From here, a fully charged smash attack should finish him off.

Stage 9 – Onett

Another single level stage. You have to fight three Nesses all with a decent defence. Aim to get through without losing a life but if you’ve still got all five lives left, don’t worry if you do. On normal mode, you can defeat a Ness by using one blast of thunder on it near the edge of the screen. On hard, things are slightly more complex. You’ll have to get each of them to at least 70% before they’ll die. Your best plan would be to sit on the lower part of the house to the left of the screen and use a mix of the up A smash attack and the occasional thunder blast.

Stage 10 – Ice Climbers

For Pikachu, this level is hell because it is impossible to use thunder thanks to its terrible design. Anyway, the first part of the level is the same on all difficulties. Jump up with the screen and dodge the ice climber style bad guys. Your bound to hit at least one as the screen speeds up but you don’t get too much damage. After around 45 seconds, the screen will stop and you’ll be faced with two pairs of ice climbers. Now, because you’re unable to use thunder, you’re restricted to the number of good moves available to you. The best plan would be to continually use the across A smash attack and try to get one pair of ice climbers to your left and one to your right. They are fairly weak even on hard.

Stage 11 – Battle Field

Part 1: - Your chance to fight the Fighting Wire Frames. This is easy, they’re so weak! Stand on the left hand side platform and use the jump and thunder technique continuously.
Part 2: - This is generally quite easy. You have to fight the Metal Mario Bros. That is assuming that you have unlocked Luigi. If you haven’t unlocked Luigi then it’s just Metal Mario. I’ll write as if you have got Luigi though. At the beginning, jump straight up and use thunder. Now jump off the left hand side of the stage (but make sure you jump back on) and with any luck Luigi will stupidly commit suicide. If he doesn’t, he probably will later in the fight. He’s stupid, so stupid. Fall to the bottom of the stage and Mario should follow. Use your smash attack on him and jump back onto one of the platforms and use thunder. Repeat process until Mario is dead or is on around 150%, at which point you should use a fully charged smash attack.

Final Stage – Final Destination

Part 1: - You should have at least three lives left at this point. If you don’t, you are in trouble. You’re up against Bowser and he is hard. Thankfully, a reasonable number of good items appear even on hard mode. I have encountered baseball bats and legendary Pokémon on more than one occasion and they are your best friends. Whilst you are waiting for good items to appear, keep jumping back and forth over Bowser’s head, using thunder as you go. You are almost guaranteed to lose a life on either difficulty. If you’re playing on hard this should be the end. Congratulations.
Part 2: - Giga Bowser. Complete the rest of the mode in less than 18 minutes and you get to fight him. That’s why I’ve been telling you to slow down if you’ve playing on hard but if you ignored my warnings then you have roughly a 0% chance of winning. Of course if you’re playing on normal and aiming for the Giga Bowser trophy then this fight is compulsory for the trophy. Giga Bowser is massive. Barely any items appear and those that do are mostly terrible. You’ll have problems jumping over his without getting hit but attempting this feat and using thunder as you go is your best bet. You will lose at least one life and Giga Bowser needs to reach at least 250% before he dies. Use smash attacks if the opportunity arises but otherwise just stick to the plan. Well done, you’ve got the Giga Bowser trophy.
