Dock
Start by going into the water and getting the ration behind the can. Go back up the steps and crawl under the tank. Run right through the puddle to the other tank. Get the ration behind that and run upwards till you get to the forklift truck. Hide behind the here till the elavator comes down. When it does creap behind the guard and get into it.

Heliport
Go up and left. Avoid the spotlights and get the chaff grenades in the middle of the area and run out the other side. Then run forward and get the SOCOM in the truck. Then go in a north east direction and up the steps and go along and crawl into the open ventilation shaft.

Tank Hanger
Crawl through the shaft until you get to the hole where you can climb down the ladder. Go along the path until you can turn right into an area. Avoid the camera and get the thermal goggles. Then go back out and follow the path again and go down the stairs. Under the stairs there's some SOCOM ammo. Now to the right of you on the north wall call for the elavator and go down to B1.

Cell
Go down and right and climb up the ladder. Follow the passage until your directly above the DARPA chief's cell. If you press the triangle button you can look down into the cells to see who's in them. The DARPA chief's the black guy. After watching the cutscenes you'll be in a room fighting all them guards. Epuip your rations and SOCOM and just keep shooting them, also collect the ammo and rations guards leave after dying. When they throw grenades in run towards the door to avoid the blast. After all that go to the elavator and go to B2.

Armory
First equip your level 1 card and go into all the little rooms you can. Now equip your C4. You've got to use it to blow through some walls. Blow through the bits that are a different colour to the normal walls, they look a blue colour. There's 2 bits on the north wall left and right of the elavator. Blast through these and collect the ammo in them. Then on the south wall to the very left blast through there and go through.

Armory South
Blast through the bit on the wall to the right. Then go through and blast through the north wall and prepare to face Revolver Ocelot.

Revolver Ocelot
Equip rations and SOCOM. My tips are to hold X and square at the same time so you can shoot while your running. Collect the ammo around the place and DON'T touch the wires in the centre. After killing him go back to the armory.

Armory
With your new level 2 keycard go into all the little rooms you can. In one room there are red and black marks on the floor. This means there are lasers, simply crawl on the floor to the other side to collect the Fa-Mas and ammo. After doing that go back to the elavator and go up to level 1.

Tank Hanger
Firstly call Meryl, her frequency is 140.15. After talking with her go right through the door and kill the guard by getting him in a choke hold. Then get the SOCOM suppresor. Then go back out and up the stairs. Go through the door to the left and get Cardboard box A. Then continue and go through the door to the right (near the camera) to get the mine detector. By this time Meryl should have opened the cargo door for you. Go to it and equip your thermal goggles. You will be able to see the lasers then so it's easier to avoid them. After getting through them go through the door.

Canyon
Equip your thermal goggles so you can see the mines. Crawl on them to pick them up. After doing that run forward to face the tank.

The Tank
Equip your rations and grenades. Simply run beside the tank and throw grenades onto the tank. The blast will kill the gunner. It takes about 2 grenades per gunner.

Nuke Building 1
Crawl under the thing and collect the ammo around the place, then go up the stairs and call for the elavator. Go to B1.

Nuke Building B1
Go forward and through the door. Then go through the first glass door to the right and get the nikita and ammo. Then go back to the elavator and go to B2.

Nuke Building B2
Go through the first 2 doors. Equip your nikita and fire a rocket, guide it down, left, up past the cameras, through the door, then through the door to the right, then hit the switchboard you saw in the cutscene. Then go back through the doors for some air. Then go back in and go through the 3rd door to the right to get the gasmask. Equip this and go back out. Then go down and right and go through the door. Now follow the passageways to fight ninja.

Ninja
You can't use weapons against ninja because he blocks the bullets with his sword. Instead start kicking and punching him. At one point he'll turn invisible, so use your thermal goggles so you'll be able to see him. After kicking and punching him loads and blue sphere should appear around him. When this happens shoot him with your Fa-Mas. After defeating him go back to the elavator and go back up to B1.

Nuke Building B1
Go forward through the doors. You've got to find Meryl so press triangle and look at the guards bums. You can tell who's Meryl by the way she walks. Once you've seen her run in front of her and follow her to the toilet. Go forward and down the passageway left of the elavator.

Commander Room
Go through the doors to face Psycho Mantis.

Psycho Mantis
When Meryl points her gun at you throw a stun grenade. Then when the screen goes black and HIDEO appears plug your controller into port 2 so he can't read your mind. When he goes invisible equip your thermal goggles so you can see him and shoot him with your Fa-Mas or SOCOM. Then when he throws objects from around the room at you crawl on the floor and shoot him when you get the chance. Throw stun grenades when Meryl points her gun at you or herself. After killing him go through the secret passageway.

Cave
Shoot the big dogs that attack you. Then follow the path till you can crawl through the gap and see Meryl. Then go through the door in front of you.

Underground Passage
After Meryls walked round a bit equip your thermal goggles and crawl onto the mines to collect them. After Meryl gets shot go back through the doors behind you.

Cave
Go back down the path shooting the wolves and go back to where you fought Psycho Mantis.

Commanders Room
Go Straight through here

Nuke Building B1
Call for the lift and go to level 1

Nuke Building 1
Go down the stairs and go south and crawl under the big thing again. Then run south and go through the doors.

Canyon
Equip your mine detector, now you can see the mines on your radar. Avoid the cameras and crawl on the mines and get to the other side.

Tank Hanger
Go south here (there aren't any lasers this time) and go left and take the elavator to B2.

Armory
Now go into all the little rooms. In the top left one you can get a PSG-1 sniper rifle but be careful because there are lasers in that room so equip your thermal goggles so you can see the lasers. Get the PSG-1 and the ammo in all the other rooms and take the elavator to level 1.

Tank Hanger
Go down and right and through the big cargo doors.

Canyon
Equip your mine detector and dodge the cameras and crawl on the mines and get to the other and go through the door.

Nuke Building 1
Crawl under the big thing, go up the stairs and take the elavator to B1.

Nuke Building B1
Go left and up the passageway and through the doors.

Commanders Room
Go straight through here and down the secret passageway.

Cave
Go through here back to where Meryl was shot to face Sniper Wolf.

Sniper Wolf
Equip your rations then run out where you can see her. Then equip your PSG-1. If you have picked up diazepam use it, if not don't worry just try and shoot her. If she shoots you unequip your PSG-1 and press forward so your facing forward again.

Underground Passage
After killing her save your game IMMEDIATLY. Run up the path collecting ammo and rations on the way. Then run right and you'll be caught. You can't prevent this from happening so don't worry about it.

Torture Room
This is why I told you to save. If you die here you can't continue. Just tap circle as quick as you can. If you have turbo on your controller turn it on as it will improve your chances of surviving.

Medi Room
If you survive the torture the guard will tell you that Ocelot wants to see you. You then have to go through the torture again. If you submitted you won't be tortured again. After you've been through all the torture you need to go through wait for the guard to go to the toilet. When he does Octacon will come and give you a handkerchief, ketchup, level 6 card and a ration. When he goes crawl under the bed. The guard will see your gone so he will open the door and come in. When he does crawl out and beat him up. Then run out the door and go into the room where you got tortured. Behind the electric stand there is a red box with all your stuff. Get this and go through the door to the right of the security camera. Also check your inventory incase Ocelot has put a bomb with your stuff.

Cell
Avoid the cameras and take the elavator to the 1st floor.

Tank Hanger
Go out the elavator turn right and go up through the cargo doors.

Canyon
Use your mine detector and get accross to the other side avoiding the cameras. Go through the big door at the other side.

Nuke Building 1
Run forward, crawl under the big thing, go up the stairs and take the elavator to B1.

Nuke Building B1
Go up the passageway left of the elavator.

Commanders Room
Run through here and down the secret passage.

Cave
Equip the handkerchief and run through here and go through the doors.

Underground Passage
Run through here and through the door where you were caught.

Communications Tower A
Run through here until you get seen by the camera. Again you can't prevent this so get the rope (you MUST get the rope) and carry on along and run up the stairs. To keep the guards off your back throw stun grenades and lay claymore mines. Once your at the top go round and climb up the ladder. They won't be after you now.

Roof Communications Tower A
Go out through the door and run towards the big satelite dish. Then watch it get blown apart. Then equip your rope and go to the railings to the north. The colonel will call you to tell you how to get down the wall. Do what he tells you and avoid the steam and the hinds gunfire until you get down to the bottom.

Walkway
You can't go through the door to the south so don't worry about that. Now there are 3 guards on the path ahead. Either sniper them or use the nikita. Once they're all gone go down the walkway and turn left and go through the door while dodging the hinds gunfire. Then get the stinger and ammo and go through the other door.

Communications Tower B
Firstly go down and right and call for the elavator. You'll notice that it's not working so go back round and turn right and go down the stairs. You'll get to a point where the stairs have been blown away. So go back up the stairs to the elavator. If you go right of the elavator you'll see Otacon has moved the boxes that were blocking the way. Now go up these stairs and be careful of the cameras on the way up. At the top collect the ammo around the corner before climbing up the ladder.

Roof Communications Tower B
Go through the door to face the hind.

The Hind
To the left of you there's a metal column. You can go behind there to avoid the Hinds gunfire. Use your stinger to take out the Hind. If you run out of ammo there's some missiles near the big satelite dish to the south. When he fires a missile don't worry because the blast doesn't affect you. After killing him go back through the door and down the ladder.

Communications Tower B
Go back down the stairs being careful of the cameras. When you get to the elavator call for it. After Otacon's called you equip your thermal goggles and Fa-Mas. You'll be able to see the guards with your thermal goggles on, so kill them and wait till you get to the bottom. When your at the bottom go round the sides of the elavator if you need ammo and exit using the south door. Then go down the corridor avoiding the cameras and go out the door at the end.

Snowfield
Run forward, you will be shot, now you've got to take on Sniper Wolf again.

Sniper Wolf 2
Run right behind some rocks. Get out your nikita and fire your rockets north as far as you can, she hides behind the trees most north of the snowfield. If you run out nikita missiles then run out and sniper her with your PSG-1.

Snowfield
After you killed Sniper Wolf if you need ammo go into the small buildings east and west of the snowfield. If not then go through the door to the left of you. Go through the corridor avoiding the cameras and go down the stairs. Congratulations, you've just completed disc 1.

Blast Furnace
Go down the path to the left and go against the wall. Gradually move accross, a crane will also move accross. When it does crouch so it doesn't knock you into the furnace. When your accross go straight down the stairs to the bottom. Don't go through the big door to the north yet, instead go through the little door to the south. Avoid the steam and collect the ammo around here. At the end of it crawl under a metal bar to a small area to get Body Armor. After getting that come out and now go through the big door to the north.

Cargo Elavator
Wait for the elavator to arrive. When it does jump aboard and go to the computer to the right and press the circle button here. Then 3 guards will jump onto the elavator. Simply take them out with your Fa-Mas. When the elavator stops turn right avoiding the camera and go onto the next elavator. When that one stops run forward through the doors to face Vulcan Raven.

Vulcan Raven
Firstly you nust be careful with Vulcan Raven because of his massive vision. To defeat him you can guide a nikita missile into him. Or a better and easier way is to use a stinger. After defeating him go through the door to the north.

Warehouse North
Now there are literally hundreds of cameras in here so you'll need to use a chaff grenade. Also be careful of the opening floor tiles on the first bit of the path. At one point you'll able to turn right and get some ammo if you need to, after that go through the door on the north wall.

Underground Base 1
Run forward up the corridor then turn right and go up the ladder.

Underground Base 2
Go right if you need chaff grenades, if not go left and forward and climb up the ladder.

Underground Base 3
Go forward and right if you need ammo. If not go up the ladder in front of you. Run accross metal gear, then follow the path, be aware of the guard along the way. Go up the small steps to watch a cutscene. After the cutscene the guards will be after you. Simply shoot them with your Fa-Mas, run back along the path, climb over metal gear and climb down the ladder in front of you.

Underground Base 2
Go south and right and climb down the ladder.

Underground Base 1
Now you've got to find the PAL key. If you equip your mine detector it should show up on the radar as an orange dot. Sometimes a rat may have got it. If so just follow the moving dot on the radar and when the rat comes out the hole shoot it with your
PSG-1. If you accidently pick up a bomb dispose of it as quick as you can as it has a 10 second timer on it. After you've got the PAL key head back up the ladder.

Underground Base 2
Head up the ladder to the left.

Underground Base 3
Climb over metal gear, follow the path, avoid the guard and go up the small steps.

Command Room
Go through the doorway avoid the cameras and insert the PAL key into the laptop on the left. After doing that exit the room.

Underground Base 3
Go back round the path over metal gear and down the ladder.

Underground Base 2
Go south then right and go down the ladder.

Underground Base 1
Go left then south down the pathway and exit through the door.

Warehouse North
Throw a chaff grenade and follow the path and go through the door, remember on the last bit of path the tiles collapse.

Warehouse
You have to stay in here until the PAL key goes blue so just run around collecting ammo to keep yourself amused. Once the PAL key's blue run back through the door to the north.

Warehouse North
Beware of the collapsing tiles at the beginning. Then throw a chaff grenade and follow the path and go through the door.

Underground Base 1
Run forward then right and climb up the ladder.

Underground Base 2
Run left then forward and climb up the ladder.

Underground Base 3
Climb up the ladder in front of you, climb over metal gear and follow the path. Avoid the guard and go up the steps.

Command Room
Run through the doorway. Throw a chaff grenade and insert the blue PAL key into the middle laptop. After you've done that exit the room.

Underground Base 3
Follow the path, avoid the guard, climb over metal gear then climb down the ladder in front of you.

Underground Base 2
Go right and climb down the ladder.

Underground Base 1
Go left and down and go through the door.

Warehouse North
Throw a chaff grenade, follow the path and be careful of the collapsing floor tiles at the end of the path. Then go through the door at the end.

Warehouse
Run straight through here avoiding the guards. Go through the door on the other side.

Cargo elavator
Run south and go onto the elavator and go up. When the elavator stops go left and onto the next elavator. Go up on that one and when it stops go south through the door.

Blast Furnace
This time you've got to wait till the PAL key goes red. Again just wonder round here collecting ammo. When it's red exit through the door you came through.

Cargo Elavator
Run forward onto the elavator and go down on it. Once it stops run right and onto the next elavator and go down on it. When it stops run forward through the doors.

Warehouse
Run through here avoiding the guards and go through the door on the other side.

Warehouse North
Run forward being aware of the collapsing floor tiles, them throw a chaff grenade and follow the path and go through the door.

Underground Base 1
Run forward then right and climb up the ladder.

Underground Base 2
Go left then forward and climb up the ladder.

Underground Base 3
Climb over metal gear, follow the path, avoid the guard and go up the steps.

Command Room
Throw a chaff grenade and insert your red PAL key into the laptop on the right. After the codec conversation with liquid equip your gasmask. Then quickly phone Otacon. He'll open the door. Run through the door and down the steps.

Underground Base 3
Run right and after watching the cutscenes you'll face metal gear.

Metal Gear Rex
Firstly use chaff grenades, this will stop the missiles he fires at you from locking on. You've got to use your stinger and shoot at metal gears radar. It's radar's a circular object on the top right of metal gear. After taking out the radar you've got to destroy the cockpit liquids in. Just do the same as with the radar and remember to keep using chaff grenades.

Liquid Snake
You haven't got long with this so be quick. Now you haven't got any weapons or rations so you need to keep kicking and punching him. Once he's got no life kick him over the edge of metal gear.

Escape Route
Firstly run out the door behind you and collect the ration, then go back through the door run forward and get the ration by the steps. Then run up the steps and through the door. When the alarm sounds just beat up the guards until Meryl or Otacon starts up the jeep. Jump into the jeep. Shoot the toxic can so it blows up and the door will smash. One tip I have for you is to press triangle to go into 1st person mode, this'll make it easier to shoot things. When you get to the first checkpoint shoot the guards and the toxic can. When you get to the second checkpoint just shoot all the guards. After that liquid will come after you. Just keep shooting him till you get to the end of the tunnel. Once your at the end of the tunnel you've done it. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You've just completed Metal Gear Solid! Now you've completed the game I need to tell you something. If you survived the torture earlier you'll start your next game with a bandana which will give you unlimited ammo with your guns. However if you submitted to the torture you'll get the stealth suit which makes you invisible.

This Metal Gear Solid boss walkthrough was written by me, Ant
(Anthony Haynes).

The following is a detailed walkthrough on how to defeat the
numerous bosses that you will encounter during the classic game
that is Metal Gear Solid. I will basically try and give you tips
and tricks on where to go, what to do and how to do it, and
hopefully I can help you progress through this marvellous game.
I have played this game through many times now, so *hopefully* I
know what I'm doing. {:)

**REVOLVER OCELOT**

Okay, so youve just saved the DARPA Chief (bit pointless
though, considering his untimely death), and now you need to go
get the ArmsTech President, Kenneth Baker. Blow your way through
the different-coloured walls with some C4, and soon youll find
yourself in a small, squarish room. An FMV scene will hit where
Snake sees Kenneth Baker, who is tied to some sort of a pillar
in the middle of the room. Snake goes to free him, but Baker
warns him of the C4 attached to the rope. This is a reminder for
you also, when fighting Ocelot make sure you dont touch the
rope, otherwise its the Game Over screen for you. Then Ocelot
appears, and yes, hes pretty handy with his gun. Hell boast
for a bit, and then shouts DRAW! and the fight is on. Whip out
your SOCOM and start running. There are five pillars in all,
one where Baker is and 4 surrounding him in the middle of the
room. This basically leaves you room to run around in circles,
which youll have to do (might get a little painful on the
fingers though.) You have a limited number of SOCOM bullets so
dont waste them theres no point shooting him while hes
running, youll never get close enough. Youll have two main
chances to get him; occasionally hell stop, turn, and shoot at
you. Step to one side, but continue running. This means you gain
on him, and as you round the corner you should have enough time
to take a shot at him. Your best chance is when he reloads,
however. Hell stop completely and one point, and youll gain
quite a lot of ground. This will give you the chance to shoot
him once, and maybe even twice. In both situations, make sure
you quickly duck behind a pillar, as hell shoot back in
retaliation. On the harder difficulty levels Ocelot can take a
while to beat, but just keep going. Make sure to pick up the
SOCOM ammo that is lying around, although some of it is
dangerously close to the ropes that trigger the C4. During the
fight, Baker will continue to lose life too, but at a very slow
rate. Unless youre playing on Extreme Mode, and even then, you
should be able to beat Ocelot comfortably without Baker dying on
you. Once youve nailed him with that winning shot, the fight
will end and youll be left to enjoy a great FMV scene that
follows. But, this wont be the last time you meet Ocelot.

**VULCAN RAVEN**

Whats more noticeable about him, is that hes inside a tank.
This is Vulcan Raven, and as youll find out now and later on,
hes one tough son-of-a-female dog to beat. However, the more
times you fight him, the easier it becomes. To beat him you
wont just need your guns, and in fact, these wont be very
useful at all. You need to have tactics, especially when you
fight him again near the end of the game, but thats another
part of this walkthrough. Once hes hyped himself up a bit, the
battle will start. To the left of the area youre in a large
rock, take cover behind this for a moment. Grab some Chaff
Grenades, run out, and throw. Start running towards the tank
(check the radar if you lose your way, but basically just run
forwards) before it blows up, so that when it does youll be
ready to take advantage. The Chaff will stop the tanks main
weapon from functioning, and all it has for the moment is a
crappy machine gun. Get a normal grenade, and time your throw to
the tanks movement, so that it lands where the guard (who has
apparently replaced Raven at the helm) is controlling the tank.
This will blow him to pieces, and up pops another guard. Repeat
this process, making sure the tank doesnt manage to destroy you
with its main weapon, or letting it run you over. There are
grenades and rations in the corners of the area, so keep picking
them up. Depending on what difficulty level youre playing, once
youve taken out a certain amount of guards the tank will fuzz
out and die, along with a smallish explosion (this is to make
sure Raven doesnt die yet, obviously.) Youll pick up a key
card from one of the fallen guards, and then make your way
towards the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building, leaving Raven to
discuss how the Raven tattooed on his head thirsts for your
blood. Humm.

**NINJA**

To continue your mission, you have to get hold of Dr Hal
Emmerich. In other words, Otacon. Unfortunately to get to him,
youll have to get through Ninja (youll find out who he is
later). Youll know when the battle has begun, and for the
moment you wont need weapons. His first attacks are limited and
easy to dodge, although will take away a reasonable amount of
life if he hits you. The trick is to hit the O button a few
times just as hes finished an attempted attack. Once youve
delivered a few kicks and punches, hell change his tactics.
Hell get rid of his blade, and start disappearing on you using
his stealth camouflage. You wont have long to find him, but it
shouldnt be too hard, because he shimmers. Yes, thats right,
shimmers. Hell probably be between lockers and boxes, or in one
of the thin corridors between the computer stations in the
middle of the room. Once youve seen him, get as close as you
can and quickly attack. When he realises that this tactic is
failing, Ninja will start flying around madly trying to hit you,
and his attacks are reasonable effective. Look out for him when
he jumps and seems to hang in midair, because if youre
underneath hell come down with extreme force, causing a lot of
damage. Just keep dodging his attacks, and hitting him straight
after. Towards the end of the battle he has another idea, this
being his best. He'll start calmly walking around as though hes
off for a leisurely stroll through the countryside, but whenever
you come up to smack him one hell suddenly disappear, appear
right behind you, and absolutely smash you with a massive punch,
which takes off a lot of health. Theres a reasonably easy way
of getting through this though; when you run up to him, and then
through him, just keep running a little way. This means hell
miss his punch, and thats your chance to turn, and start
throwing those left and right-hands. Once you get him to the end
of his life bar, hell sort of explode into a ball
ofelectricity, I guess. DONT GO TOO CLOSE TO HIM! The
electricity or whatever it is will damage you quite badly, so
this is where you need your guns. SOCOM or FAMAS will do the
trick, just shoot him three or four times (he may move around
the room a bit after each shot), and finally youll defeat him,
leaving you to enjoy an even better FMV scene afterwards!

**PSYCHO MANTIS**

After sprinting your way into the womens toilet so you can see
Meryl in her underwear, and watching a cool FMV scene between
the two characters, you head off to the Commanders Room, where
a certain Psycho Mantis is waiting. Wanna know what that
strange, haunting music is all about? Thats him, and hes using
it to control Meryls mind, as youll soon see. When you enter
the room, Meryl will suddenly whip out her Desert Eagle and
point it at you, before letting out series of weird outbursts.
Try going into 1st Person View Mode at this point, and youll
realise that youre actually looking through Psycho Mantis
eyes. If you havent the Thermal Goggles, then youll have to
use this technique to defeat him. When Meryl starts shooting at
you, dont shoot back. Knock her out; I advise throwing her,
although you can be a little more brutal if you wish and use the
kick-punch combo. Once shes dazed, Psycho will finally appear
and hype himself up a bit. The fight will then begin, and once
again hell try and use Meryl (and he will do a couple more
times after that). At one point hell try to get Meryl to blow
her brains out as he subtly put it, and once again you just
need to throw her around for a bit. Hell give up with her soon
enough, and start using his own powers. First hell create what
looks strangely like a flaming tyre, and throw it at you. Move
out of the way, quickly. Then hell summon a few items from
around the room, so you need to get on the ground and duck these
as they fly over you. Then leap to your feet, put the Thermal
Goggles on if you have them (or use 1st Person View Mode to work
out where he is), run up to him and use the kick-punch combo.
Hell then get a few a chairs and make them fly round and round
in circles, so once again I advise you to get on your hands and
knees. Once theyre gone, get up once again and repeat the
process. Hell then make pictures and portraits fly around the
room just do the same as you did last time. Whenever hes
finished with his attack, make sure you get up and deliver that
kick-punch combo. Itll take a while, but its really the only
way to defeat him. Once hes down therell be an interesting FMV
scene, and then hell pass away. And dont worry, hes not
coming back, which is good because this can be one of the
longest boss fights on the game.

**SNIPER WOLF**

After some emotional FMVs and Codec conversations, you have to
head back to the Tank Hangar again to pick up a Sniper Rifle.
And then you go all the way back to the Underground Passage,
where Sniper Wolf is waiting. The worst thing about this part of
the game is the damn Wolves that attack you in the Caves.
Theyre not particularly hard to kill when theyre on their own,
but theyre unbelievably annoying in groups of two and three.
Its also a waste of bullets to kill them all, so if you know
the way well enough just run. Meryl has disappeared, but her
blood still stains the ground. Get to one side; I always use the
leftfor no particular reason. The hardest part of this stage is
actually getting on your stomach and into a position where you
can snipe Wolf without her hitting you ever three seconds. Stay
as close as you can to the wall, but make sure youve got a
decent view of her whereabouts. Shell usually hide behind
pillars, mostly the sides of the platform shes standing on. A
good idea if you cant find her is to look for her breathing out
its cold sosmoke or whatever it is can be seen. :D Sorry,
Im crap at science. Maybe its just cold air, I dont know, but
you can definitely see her breathing. Theres not many tips I
can give you here apart from make sure you take the Diazepam
(which can be found in that room opposite the Commanders Room
where you fight Psycho Mantis). When you see her, shoot. Even if
you dont get a perfect aim it will hit, but make sure its
before she hits youobviously. If she hits you then youll
probably have to get up and move back into position, but to be
honest, shes pretty easy to beat. Later on however, shes much
tougher, so dont underestimate the power ofSniper Wolf. Once
your business is completed, have a quick look around for items
before heading through the door, where youll be caught, knocked
out and taken away. Bah. SAVE IT BEFORE YOU ARE CAUGHT!!!! This is extremely important, because if you get killed thanks to the
next boss, theres no continues. This is especially bad if you
didnt save before Meryl gets shot, because it means you have to
go through those goddamn wolves again. Bah.

**REVOLVER OCELOT 2 TORTURE**

To be honest, theres not much advice I can give you here. Tap
quickly, I suppose. :D Just remember that if Ocelot kills you
then theres no continues. Game over, and this time it really
means it. Ocelot will crow for a little while along with a few
others including Liquid Snake and Sniper Wolf, before they leave
and Ocelot begins the torture. Youll have to go through three
segments of it, each longer than the last. The first is
reasonably easy, and the same goes for the second. Just dont
stop tapping, ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS STOPPED! This gives you a
couple of seconds to regain your health without the electricity
taking it away from you. The third segment is quite tough
however, and youll need to tap like crazy to beat it. If you
think youre going to die and you havent saved after killing
Wolf, then submit by pressing Select. It doesnt matter too much
to be honest, because theres two endings. In fact, the first
time I played I submitted by accident before the first segment.
I was trying to call the Colonel. :D

**LIQUID SNAKE HELICOPTER**

Now you know why you saw that Hind-D earlier. Liquids piloting
it, and he plans on taking you out like he did those Jet
Fighters. After a long sequence of basic gameplay that included
running up dozens of flights of stairs along with around fifty
enemies and a bit of parascending (I guess its not that basic
then), youll come up against what is quite possibly the
toughest boss fight in the game. Youre on the Roof of one of
the Communications Towers (cant remember at the moment,
although youll know when youre there), and finally ready to
battle the main boss, who is apparently your brother. Get your
Stinger (my favourite weapon), and then find a place to hide. If
youre facing north (I think), then in top right-hand corner of
your screen should be a couple of small control stations you can
hide behind. If you stand close or against them, they should
protect you from any incoming machine gun fire. Although, they
probably wont do much good when he raids you with missiles.
When he does that, just run around for a bit. :D This is where
your radar, and your targeting system really come into play.
Stand reasonably close to one of the towers and equip the
Stinger. On your radar, there should be a red dot that continues
to move around, depending on where Liquid goes. Work out
whereabouts he is with the Stinger using the radar, and soon
your targeting system will come into play. The Stinger will
locate him even if you cant see him (which you usually cant),
and although its quite hard to describe, a
square/rectangle/box/whatever will surround him, and if you fix
your aim onto that the Stinger will lock on. Then, you follow.
If he goes underneath you which he often likes to, then youll
probably have to do this again. However, keep going and in the
end you will prevail, because at some point hell rise to take a
pop at you. Hopefully your Stinger will be locked on, and you
can fire. Youll be able to tell if the Missile hit thanks to an
explosion and usually a cry of anguish from Liquid. Then get rid
of the weapon as quickly as you equipped it, and stand against
the control tower again while bullets rain down on you. You
wont be able to get out of the way all the time though, and the
missiles will almost certainly hit. KEEP YOUR RATIONS EQUIPPED!
This is vital to your survival. If you run out of ammo or
rations, then run southwards and then to the east from the
control stations, where there should be some on a small ramp of
some kind. He wont really change his tactics so if you keep
nailing him occasionally with the missiles, then soon enough the
Hind will begin to explode in front of your very eyes. Soon it
will fall from the sky, taking Liquid with it. Is that the last
youll hear from him, though?

**SNIPER WOLF 2 SNOWFIELD**

We move on to another of the toughest boss fights, as we meet
Sniper Wolf for a second time with revenge in mind. At first you
wont know shes even there, and youll just run out into the
open snowfield (this place is a bit like where you fought Raven,
but its much smaller, surrounded by warehouses and theres the
odd tree tooso in fact, the only similarity is the snow. Humm.)
Youll hear the single shot from her Sniper Rifle, and youll
fall to the ground. Snake uses his CODEC and works out that Wolf
is around, somewhere to his north. This guess is proved when
Wolf calls him on the CODEC too, and even Otacon joins in for
the sake of love. Dont listen to him though; you have to wipe
her out. Once the fight begins, run back to where you came from
and stand against a lone tree that stands in the bottom
left-hand corner. Take some Diazepam, and if you dont have any
of this or any ammo for your Sniper Rifle then head to your
right and you should be able to obtain some. Head back to the
tree and do the same thing as you did in the Underground Passage
get down on your hands and knees so that you have a reasonably
good view of all thats in front of you, but also trying to get
as much cover from the tree as possible. This snowfield is
certainly not smooth, and although sometimes she will hide
behind trees, most of the time shell take cover behind large
mounds of snow. Remember to look for her breathing, but its
harder to see this time around. Keep looking through that Scope
and panning around the area, you will see her. And once you do,
try as hard as you possibly can to not let her go. Shoot
whenever you think you have a chance, it shouldnt matter too
much where you hit her. Inevitably, she will hit you from time
to time, and unfortunately this will most probably knock you out
of position. Theres nothing you can really do to stop this,
just make sure you have your rations equipped, and not your
Diazepam, which I always seem to have for some unfathomable
reason. This battle is very hard, and a very, very extreme
option is to use your Nikita Missiles. This will leave you very
vulnerable to attack however as youll have to use the 1st
Person View Mode, and its unlikely youll find her before the
missile explodes. Just keep your wits about you and shoot
whenever possible, and if youve got enough rations and if you
use your Diazepam wisely then you should defeat her in the end.
It can take a couple of attempts though, so make sure youve
saved when you reach the Snowfield. Once you hear her final cry
of pain, put away your trusty Sniper Rifle and head over to her
direction, and get ready to watch what is in my opinion the most
emotional and greatest FMV scene ever. Good stuff.

**VULCAN RAVEN 2 BIG GUN**

The reason Ive named this boss battle Big Gun is very simple.
When you come up against Vulcan Raven for the second time, he
boasts a very, very large gun. Very large, and very dangerous.
Youll notice that youre in some sort of large, cold warehouse.
Much of the place is covered with ice, and there are a lot of
large, frozen crates. Use these to your advantage, because in
this fight you will rarely want to actually see Raven, if at
all. Trust me, if you go up to him with all guns blazing hell
knock you down and tear you to pieces before youve even got
pulled the trigger. Keep away from him, and make sure you use
your radar to do this. There are a couple of ways to defeat him,
and although theyre time-consuming, its worth it. Spend a
couple of minutes just watching him on your radar as he slowly
moves around searching for you, making sure youre not seen.
Keep a close eye on the paths he takes, and try to find an area
that he regularly walks though (there are quite a few of these).
Now, you can use two methods. My favourite is to plant a C4 or a
Claymore Mine in one of the areas youve found, and then get as
far away as possible without losing sight of the area on the
radar. If youre right, then he should soon walk into an
exploding C4 (depending on your timing) or an exploding Claymore
(depending on your placing.) This is the method I advise,
although there are others. One is to use your Nikita Missiles,
but once again, doing this will leave you vulnerable. Also,
youll have to guide the missile towards his back, because if he
sees it then hell shoot it down. Because of this, using the
Nikita will take ages, and I wouldnt bother personally. The
final way is extremely dangerous, but effective if done well.
Follow his paths again, and then get your Stingers ready. When
he turns his back (youll be able to tell with your radar), leap
out of your hiding place and nail him with a missile, before
hiding again. Using the Stingers means he probably wont shoot
it down, especially if you do it when his back is turned. You
can also try this with other weapons like the FAMAS or SOCOM,
but these are no where near as effective and will take ages to
beat him. This is a risky method though, and I would advise
using C4s and Claymores before giving this a go. Once you beat
him therell be more FMV, and then youll be left alone to
continue your mission. The second battle with Raven is tough,
but easily possible.

**METAL GEAR**

Considering this is the battle that the game has been leading up
to, it really requires no skill whatsoever. Okay, so a bit of
aiming in the first bit, but apart from that you just need to
keep your rations equipped, and your finger pressing that weapon
button! Liquids back, and after some amazing plot revelations
youre ready to finally do battle with your lifelong enemy
Metal Gear. Along with its obvious Nuclear capabilities, Metal
Gear also boasts a rail gun and what is basically a Stinger
Missile Launcher x 10. Ouch. Impossible for a normal man maybe,
but youre no normal man. Youre Solid Snake, a man with a deep,
gravely voice and cool clothes. Oh, and youve got those Stinger
Missiles, of course. Anyway, this fight will also be wrought
with FMV scenes, either explaining what you have to do to beat
Metal Gear and some more plot-weaving. One of these is another
classic, so dont even think about skipping any of them. Okay,
you wont need anything else here apart from your rations, and
your Stinger. Have both equipped, and once youve finished with
the CODEC and the FMVs, get ready to do battle. Now I cant
remember exactly where it is, but Otacon will show you I
believe, but first you have to destroy some sort of small shield
(I think its around one of Metal Gears shoulders). Anyway, all
you have to do is continually fire at this, nothing else. It
doesnt take too long, and with the help of a certain someone
the shield will soon be destroyed. This opens Metal Gears
mouth, and will allow you to fire into its main control system
or whatever, and you wont have to pierce its unsurprisingly
unpierceable armour. This is where it gets a bit harder, because
Liquid will really to start to use the full potential of Metal
Gear. Missiles and machine gun bullets will rain down on you
among other things, and theyll use up your rations pretty damn
fast. Some people advise running around at this point like in
Metal Gear 2, but I never did this. The area youre in is
massive and theres hardly any cover, and Metal Gear will
continue to nail you without you repaying the favour. Just make
sure you have your rations equipped, and shoot into its gob as
many times as possible. I reckon there are rations and ammo
around, so if you dont think youve got enough to survive then
I suppose youll have to go and get them. To be honest, this is
a bit of a scrappy fight, but its still full of tension.
Hopefully though it wont be long before Metal Gear falls with
Liquid inside. Surely hes dead now, you might think. But
remember, this is Solid Snakes brother were talking about, and
you two have yet to go at it in hand-to-hand combat.

**LIQUID SNAKE HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT**

Well, I expect youd already guessed this was going to happen
thanks to me, but I like the title anyway. The Les Enfants
Terribles are on top of the fallen wreckage that is Metal Gear,
shirts off and fists at the ready. Have your thumb/finger at the
ready on that O button, and once youve had another little
chat then the fight is on. Just one more thing thoughtheres a
time limit. And if the time limit runs out, then a certain Meryl
dies. Shes next to the timer, so you know that he means it.
Anyway, youre both standing on what looks like Metal Gears
head, and to be quite perfectly honest its a reasonable way up.
You fall off, and you die, but a lot of the time Snake will grab
onto the side and pull himself up. If youve ever played one of
the SmackDown games then this battle will seem a bit familiar,
its just all you can do is kick and punch your opponent. Try
not to stand still too much, keep moving around and when hes
finished all his little moves, step in and take advantage,
delivering a few shots and a painful kick to the face.
Considering this is the final boss fight, hes surprisingly easy
to beat, just make sure you do it within the time limit. Im not
entirely sure, but I believe Liquid can be thrown as well, but
personally Id just use the O attack. Although its quite easy,
this is still one cool fight and a great way to basically finish
an awesome game. Soon enough youll have beaten him, and surely,
surely now he is dead!?

NO!

After this, you go on a fantastic car chase with Meryl/Otacon
depending on how you performed in the torture segment, and all
you have to do here is shoot constantly at guards, and then
Liquid who chases you in his own little vehicle! This is fun,
fast and frantic, and is the last piece of gameplay in Metal
Gear Solid, before a longish FMV scene reveals all about parts
of the plot that are still a mystery to you, and in Kojima-style
delivers a strong message about life.

This ends my walkthrough, and one of the finest games ever made.
I only decided to do a boss walkthrough because the gameplay in
between is quite simple (although very effective), and also
because the boss in MGS are some of the best ever created, as
are the FMV scenes afterwards. If youre anything like me then
you will have loved this game, and although its a little late
maybe my walkthrough can help some of you. Metal Gear Solid is
available for PSX/PS2 and PC, for those of you who have not
experienced it yet.

Thanks for reading, Ant.
