The Sims: A guide to 'making it big' in the virtual world!

The whole aim of The Sims is to make it big. It's nice to be pulling in the money, have lots of friends, a big house, nice TV ... but it's a hard task, so what can I recommend to making it big?

Mainly, it all depends on your family set-up. If you have a plan for how many members you have, that's good enough, but in my opinion, 1 is too little to maintain all the jobs, relations and so on, while 8 is too many Sims on the screen to manage!

For this guide, I'll be concentrating on the basic ideas of running a family, with 2 Adults (Mum and Dad) and 2 Kids. Their personalities are important. Consider what you buy. Someone who isn't outgoing might not be bothered about not having friends, but if they are, they'll cry themselves in a flood if they don't see human flesh. Also, those who are serious will prefer practicing their moves in chess than watching action flicks on TV. Accommodate for your Sims, and remember their likes / dislikes.

Step 1: Getting sorted

You start off with 20,000 Simoleans. This should buy you a small house. Your ABSOLUTE MINIMUM of rooms required is 2. This is 1 for a bathroom and 1 for a living area. Whether you cram everything into 1 room, or split it up with walls and doors is up to you. I also make sure I have only 1 door, since any Burglars only can enter 1 way, and come across Mr. Security Alarm!

Make sure you plan your spending. You’ll want money for food, otherwise you will starve. Save 1000 Simoleans for safety.

A problem, will come in getting beds. Buying 4 beds is quite costly, but if you can make the parents sleep with each other, you save some money. Otherwise, the Kids bed is the best value. Despite it not being as classy, it has high stats for its cheap price.

A Toilet and Shower is important too, a Sink is also needed to keep hygiene levels up, but a Shower can rectify this, it's just more time costly.

A sofa and TV is always a good combination. A sofa not only acts as a way to increase comfort levels, but can be used as an extra bed if needed. The TV increases fun levels, making your Sims happier.

A Bookshelf will perfect cooking and mechanics skills, meaning you'll be prepared for any accidents, as well as making better meals for the family. Also, the kids can revise getting their grades higher.

If the TV is in use, a Computer can be useful. You need a computer table and chair, but the cheapest PC will do. With this, you can get even more jobs than in a paper (an additional 3) and also use it for fun or (for the kids) studying.

A fridge is important, and an Oven or at least a microwave will make those meals so much better for your family. Make sure you have a fire alarm in place above the oven / microwave, so the fire department will come instantly in the event of a fire.

A burglar alarm is useful to deter those nasties. Burglars can still a lot of valuable stuff, so make sure you have this at your entrances.

If you have 250 Simoleans left, an Art Easel is recommended. It boosts creativity, can be considered fun, and the paintings can be sold for cash! Kids are especially good at drawing.

Step 2: Getting to work

If you want to make money, to pay the bills and cost of the infinite fridge, a job is needed. All jobs are your choice, but work in the Police or Army is the highest earner at 250 Simoleans. Work towards promotion all the time. This means making sure your Sim 1. has all the requirements and 2. is in a good mood. If he's high in the green (good mood), he will most likely be up for promotion.

As for the kids, get them studying! If they become A+ students, by sending them to the bookshelf / PC, 'Grandma' will send you $200 Simoleans a kid! It's worth forcing them to read up! Opposed to that, if they don't revise, they'll be taken away and sent to a Boarding School. Harsh!

As the Mum of the family, the main job is keeping things all nice, and concentrating on relations. I use the 'mum' to make sure things like the TV is off when it isn't used, to clean the sink and also talk to friends to keep the friendship bar. I also use her to talk to the Kids and 'Dad' to keep their friendship metres high.

Establishing bed times is important. Unless you want to be nursing your family every second and will be getting bored, send them to bed at around 8 - 11 pm. For the workers, this might vary, but ultimately, you want to give them a good couple of Sim hours before work, to get in some food, a wash, and some TV for amusement.

3: Getting higher up in the world

Don't be too hasty to move out. If a bit of money sees your way, don't sell up and move out. Extensions to your house can be just as useful. If you have the need for another room, build one on the side of your house. Make sure you sell all the wallpaper, windows and doors possibly in its way, also plants and stuff can go. Then, put in windows, and make it look like another normal part of the house.

Upgrades are very useful. Get rid of the heap of crap that your old TV was, and go for the Plasma Screen. Likewise, do you have old uncomfortable beds? Get newer plush ones (however, the Kids beds are still worthwhile). Buying a new house would mean you may still be using less useful items.

Relations are important. Having friends can really make a difference in your Sims moods. Try and keep them reasonably social, especially making use of the family environment you have pre-set up. 'Mum' and 'Dad' should be in love, as to make relations really strong. If you followed my guide earlier on, the 'Mum' should have as many friends as possible and be talk of the town.

Upgrades can be useful also. Things like Mechanics mean there's no need for the handyman, and jobs get done quicker. Cookery can make your meals more replenishing and less risk of fires.

If you're well established in most other areas, you can begin working on the 'Room' category. Getting your rooms to a nicer standard can involve nicer pictures, work tops and so on. It's pretty much useless when you need the bare essentials early on, but your Sims will be happier if they have something to look at more often. Also, things like the Toilet being easily accessed, lots of different shapes on the walls and weird design will also get your Sims brains ticking.

4. Rich Sims

Now, your Sims shall be thriving. Expensive TVs, a house like Buckingham Palace, more friends than you can probably handle, lots of skills, generally just at the top of their game. There are a few final things to make sure of to refine your experience.

To call yourself rich, you have to had reached the top of your Job ladder. Lots of promotions and friends would have been important to your success and hopefully 'Mum' will have introduced you to the neighbours while the kids will have been getting Grandmas bank account number through the mail as she's so impressed!

Luxury is the only exception in this house. A nice pool, the latest art pieces from the gallery, giant beds and a TV that looks like it was ripped out of a cinema. Nice flooring and theme becomes only a personal taste, having not much effect on the members, but if you're reeling in the cash, you can afford to be wild!

The kids should be at A+s still, with a maintained education and Mum should have all the latest luxuries in cooking, so all she needs to do is push a button and a turkey dinner appears.

Admittedly, this is harder than it looks. This is a tedious process and it is recommended you save as much as often so you can take a break. The key is being prepared, and hopefully with what I have told you, you will be ready to start clawing your way up the Sims world and do the near impossible, completing the hardest strategy game in the world - the world itself (or as close as the Sims get!)
